Everton pick up another win thanks to a Ross Barkley goal at Dundee United. A Matt Etherington penalty is enough for Stoke to see off Sion, while both West Brom and Sunderland suffer narrow losses after spurning plenty of chances to find the net:

Seongnam 1 Sunderland 0
Martin O’Neill’s side slipped to defeat in their opening match of the Peace Cup. The Black Cats’ opponents are already midway through their domestic campaign and their superior fitness told in the end, though Sunderland can consider themselves somewhat unlucky after hitting the woodwork three times. O’Neill started with Titus Bramble and Michael Turner at centre-half, with Wes Brown at right-back, though the club’s official website singled out debut boy Carlos Cuellar (who looks a strong cut-option at 4.5 in FPL and 4.8 in the Sky Sports game) as their most impressive defender, after the former Villa man was handed his chance just after the hour mark. Fraizer Campbell and Connor Wickham led the line in a 4-4-2; the latter was handed 90 minutes and hit the post – as did Kieran Richardson – while a Craig Gardner free-kick rattled the bar. Despite their attacking endeavours, though, the Black Cats couldn’t find the net and sank to a somewhat undeserved defeat.

Sunderland Starting XI: Mignolet, Wes Brown (Blair Adams 72), Titus Bramble (Carlos Cuellar 61), Michael Turner, Jack Colback, David Meyler, Lee Cattermole (C), Craig Gardner, Kieran Richardson (Roarie Deacon 72), Fraizer Campbell (Ryan Noble 79), Connor Wickham.

Dundee United 0 Everton 1
David Moyes fielded a strong looking first XI for the trip to Dundee United as the Toffees scraped a narrow win in a rather uninspiring match. First-team regulars such as Tim Howard, Sylvain Distin, Phil Neville and Leon Osman all started from the off, while Jack Rodwell made his second successive appearance before making way for Marouane Fellaini at the break. Leon Osman impressed again after a strong display at the weekend against Morecambe, while Seamus Coleman’s right-flank raids tormented the Tangerines time and again – indeed, the latter had a hand in the game’s only goal, teeing up sub Ross Barkley to notch a late, late winner as Moyes’ men made it two pre-season wins out of two so far.

Everton Starting XI: Howard; Hibbert, Neville, Distin, Duffy; Coleman, Rodwell (Fellaini 46), Junior (Barkley 54), Osman; Anichebe(Garbutt) McAleny (Vellios).

Sion 0 Stoke 1
The Potters racked up a narrow win in the Swiss village of Saxon in front of just 200 fans last night. Tony Pulis gave Asmir Begovic and Thomas Sorenson 45 minutes apiece between the sticks, while Ryan Shotton got the nod ahead of Andy Wilkinson in the right-back slot in a match that saw as many as 20 players given game time. With Jonathan Walters still unavailable after his Euro 2012 duties, Kenwyne Jones partnered Peter Crouch, though it was Cameron Jerome – on as a second-half sub for the latter – who was the visitors most threatening attacking player, according to the reports. Left-back Marc Wilson came close to netting early on, while Matt Etherington sealed an impressive individual display by slotting home the winner from the spot late on in the first half.

Stoke Starting XI: Begovic (Sorensen 46); Shotton (Wilkinson 50), Upson (Collins 50), Shawcross (Huth 50), Wilson (Higginbotham 50); Delap, Whitehead (Arismendi (57), Palacios (Tonge 57); Etherington (Pennant 46), Crouch (Jerome 57), Jones.

Malmo 1 West Brom 0
The Baggies fell to defeat in Steve Clarke’s first match in charge but the result was something of an injustice, with the visitors in the ascendancy for the vast majority of the match. With the club’s Euro 2012 competitors still unavailable, Clarke opted for a mixture of youth and experience and, rolling out a 4-4-2 formation, handed Marc-Antoine Fortune a starting role alongside Peter Odemwingie up front. After his side went behind in eight minutes, the Nigerian – who was also on free-kicks – had plenty of chances to equalise before being replaced by debutant Yassine El Ghanassy midway through the second-half, while Graham Dorrans was a major attacking threat for the Baggies in a central midfield role. Liam Ridgewell also came close to scoring from a Dorrans corner after coming on as a sub at half-time but Clarke’s men paid for their profligacy as their Swedish hosts held out for the win.

West Brom Starting XI: Myhill; Jones, Tamas, McAuley, (Reid 63), Hurst; Jara (Ridgewell 46), Mulumbu (Mantom 63), Dorrans (Mantom 70), Roofe (Morrison 46); Fortune (Berahino 63), Odemwingie (El Ghanassy 70).

For those yesterday who were questioning Cueller's fantasy prospects here's that key line again from Paul.

(Sunderland's) official website singled out debut boy Carlos Cuellar (who looks a strong cut-option at 4.5 in FPL and 4.8 in the Sky Sports game) as their most impressive defender, after the former Villa man was handed his chance just after the hour mark.

I'm thinking similar...although have Fabio, Tomkins and Cuellar rotating and Cole and Clicy as my expensive ones.

I originally had Kelly, but there is quite a big threat of rotation in the Fulham defence...I'll see how the friendlies pan out ....hope to pop him back in as he is pretty reliable when he plays.

Is anyone in the Man City line up nailed on week in week out...even Ageuro and Silva were rotated by Mancini last season. I think Clichy is first choice and will play most games at LB...his only real competition is Kolorov, who is second choice. He's a gamble, but only a little one.

Someone was talking about Pog's high ownership and the possibility that he could drop rapidly if he fails to perform, especially given the big gap after his GW2 game.

I just had a quick look at the most popular players and there are some real contenders for heavy price drops in the first few weeks as people knee-jerk out poor performing/non-starting players. Here's a few:

DdG 19% (might not start the season)
    Krul 18.9% (poor fixtures)

    Cole 25% (blank GW3)
Walker 20.2% (could easily be swapped for another top defender at £6.5m)
    Shawcross 18.1% (poor fixtures)
    Coloccini 17.8% (poor fixtures)
    Clichy 16.7% (might be rotated)

Hazard 30% (unproven in the PL and might not start all of the opening games)
    Cabaye 22.7% (poor fixtures)
Silva 19% (not known for explosive returns, the casuals could lose patience)
Kagawa 15.6% (unproven in the PL and might not start all of the opening games)

Aguero 34.1% (it would only take a blank in the opening fixture and a poor show against Liverpool for people to get a little knee-jerky!)
Torres 24.6% (blank in gw3, would need a good start to avoid massive transfers out)

The question is, should this be a factor when considering teams? Obviously the ownership levels will change a bit but it's still a valid point!

I think the difference is that with Pog you don't really have anywhere obvious to run to, all of those other players can be swapped out without a hit, but I take your point it's very speculative - Pog could actually do well! 🙂

Yeah I don't think Pog is a huge risk, but the rest on that list could be.

I doubt many will go with Krul, Shawx, Walker, Coloccini or Cabaye, but the rest seem quite popular so far among RMTs (which, incidentally, I think are a waste of time at this point in time!)

I suppose if you have some of them and they look like their price will drop a lot.
That will mainly be because they've performed badly, so would you really want to hang on to them?
I'm currently planning to have four of those so not too difficult to clear the decks if necessary with just the odd hit or two if they all fail. Which I doubt otherwise I wouldn't have them.

Certainly something to consider. If you have loads and they all bomb, it's early Wildcard time.

Well do you disagree with any specific comments?

Of course there are negatives for many players but I'm speculating reasons as to why these particular players could score badly and be transferred out in droves.

Well mainly Aguero and to a slightly lesser extent Walker. I don't necessarily disagree, but I don't think the possibility of someone not scoring well and therefore being knee-jerked out is really a concerning thing, as this could happen to all 15 of your players.
I agree this could be something to consider, but there is a reason why some of them are so popular.
From memory the higher owned players take a lot more transfers out to drop anyway.

Fair enough, I plan to start with Aguero as things stand and I'm not saying he will do badly, but he could see huge shifts in ownership if he draws a blank at home the SOT then travels to Anfield in GW2 and gets nothing.

My point still holds strong when considering players with poor fixtures and punts though, plus the reason these players would be particularly prone to transfers out because many casuals will have them and all be playing early on and knee-jerking.

I don't think it really matters that much especially if you plan to keep hold of these players through the mass knee jerking anyway. Unless you are really unlucky, their prices will rise back up with a decent performance.

Holding onto a player that's scoring badly and dropping in value - easier said than done!

Some will no doubt come good over time, but the likes of Hazard, Kagawa are huge punts and a poor scoring £10m Torres's with a blank in GW3 might make people think twice about holding on.

Aye that's what I mean. Players who are huge punts you are likely to get rid of anyway at the first sign of rotation/poor game. Otherwise players like Ageuro etc, you'd have to be real unlucky if they had a poor couple of games and they continued to play poor for a lengthy period. Of course it can happen, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Sure, but what I should have mentioned originally is that there will be a lot of knee-jerking casuals early on and a poor performing player would surely be more likely to be shifted out early on. I'm not sure the theory is watertight anyway, just thought it was an interesting idea.

      I don't think it matters.

First, it can always go in both directions. Bale had a massive ownership two seasons ago (almost 50%), but his price still went up quickly after he scored a brace against Stoke in GW2.

Besides, if I'm not mistaken, transfers out needed for a price drop depend on ownership and, hence, for a player with a high ownership there are more transfers out needed than for a player with a low ownership. Therefore, if you're afraid of price drops, you should go for players with 0% ownership, which would be rather unreasonable.

A blank in GW3 is an important factor though, and a significant price drop looks inevitable in this period if he doesn't deliver in GW1/2.

It looks as if we shall have to wait until the August friendly matches are played to start to see the first choice sides emerge from most teams.
I made the mistake last year of taking too much notice of early pre-season friendlies.

I like to know what's happening and appreciate the reports Brian.

It's just that they are friendlies in which nobody wants to get crocked pre-season and mainly against weakish sides.

In defence of Moses he actually started the season playing very well - it just didn't translate into fantasy points. He was going on mazy dribbles, setting up chances, smacking the bar from 30 yards, etc. In season's gone by he'd have been a BP darling for those first dozen games.

Morning. I have a fair idea of a basic structure and plan involving a bit of wiggle room in all positions, a couple of expensive players in each bracket etc, but the individual personnel could change. Petric certainly could do well, but he's very much a wait and see for me - particularly with Fulham being so unpredictable.

And if you had that extra £0.5m, you'd want an extra £0.5m, and then you'd want an extra £0.5m...

The extra money doesn't really mean anything if everyone else gets it too.

None of them are good. There is a lack of balance. If I had to choose one A would get my pick except McClean instead of Larss.
