Reading continued their busy summer of squad restructuring last week with the capture of Adrian Mariappa from Watford on a three-year contract. The 25-year-old arrives in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £3m and finally earns the centre-half a move to the Premier League, after interest from both Newcastle and Wigan midway during the 2011/12 campaign failed to come to fruition:

Mariappa is the fifth player to arrive at the Madejski, following Pavel Pogrebnyak, Nicky Shorey, Danny Guthrie and Garath McCleary to the club and, with Chris Gunter subsequently signing up from Nottingham Forest, Reading boss Brian McDermott has wasted little time in bolstering his squad after last year’s promotion from the Championship. McDermott spoke of his relief at finally landing Mariappa after pursuing the player for a number of weeks:

I’m delighted to get the deal to sign Aidy over the line, we have been chasing him all summer. He’s been a very important player for Watford over a number of years, he is well known to most of our players already and also the staff here. Every single person I have spoken to about him has nothing but good things to say about him both as a player and as a person.

The Statistics

Up until now, Mariappa has spent his entire career at Vicarage Road. Working his way up through the Watford youth system, he also skippered the reserves before signing his first professional contract in the summer of 2005. The defender made just three league appearances in his initial season with the first-team as the Hornets clinched promotion to the Premier League, though his one and only campaign in the top-flight was less than successful. Mariappa was hauled off at half-time in the opening game of 2006/07 and was only afforded a route back into the starting lineup due to injuries to others, with his versatility enabling him to deputise at right-back.

It took Mariappa until the 2008-9 campaign before he became a regular for the Hornets but the past four seasons have seen him firmly established as a crucial component of the club’s back-four. A run of 113 consecutive league games – the fourth highest in the club’s history – was only ended by suspension but it was his consistency of performance that caught the eye of many in the Premier League. In total, he made 216 league appearances for Watford, scoring four goals and assisting four, and departs with the club’s Player of the Year for 2011/12 under his belt. Mariappa also kick-started his international career with Jamaica this year and has so far made four appearances.

The Prospects

Although many expect the £3m man will slot straight into the Royals’ backline, it’s perhaps a little too early to make assumptions regarding McDermott’s plans. Granted, Mariappa has the advantage of pace and mobility over both of last season’s first-choice centre-halves, Alex Pearce and Kaspars Gorkss, but Reading’s tactics, which deploy a pair of deep-lying central midfielders in front of their defence, mean the Royals are rarely susceptible to counter-attacks. Unless McDermott decides to change his approach, then, speed at the back is unlikely to be a determining factor when assessing Reading’s likely lineup.

With Gorkss and Pearce at the heart of defence, McDermott’s men racked up 20 clean sheets in 2011/12 – the most of the three promoted sides – and offer Fantasy managers a cut-price option at the back as we look to balance our budgets. From an Fantasy perspective, the ideal scenario would see Mariappa and Gorkss strike up a partnership; both are priced at 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), while Pearce comes in at 4.5. In the Sky Sports game, it’s a similar situation – Pearce is the most expensive of the trio at 4.2, with Gorkss at 4.1 and Mariappa at a mere 3.8. Intriguingly, Mariappa has started alongside Gorkss against Sheffield Wednesday this evening.

Fortunately, Reading still have plenty of pre-season friendlies for McDermott to trial the various permutations ahead of double Gameweek 1, which sees the club host Stoke before travelling to Chelsea. Aside from the double, Reading’s opening schedule isn’t particularly enticing, though; trips to Sunderland and West Brom, in addition to home clashes against Spurs and Newcastle, may see McDermott’s men struggle to keep out their opponents. Such a run of fixtures may be enough to deter many from investing, allowing us to assess both the likelihood of Mariappa’s game time and Reading’s potential for clean sheets before the fixture list becomes a little kinder.

Alright guys. My one and only RMT for today.

Playing around and decided I wanted Bale in the team.
Torres -> Rooney and Hazard -> Kagawa at some point.

    Begovic
    Ivanovic (c) - Fabio - Clichy
    Noble - Hazard - Ireland - Bale
    Cisse D - Aguero (v) - Torres

    Jaaskelainen - Williams A - Cuellar - Maloney

first RMT of the season. undoubtedly this will change at least a dozen times (like most everyone else) before the season starts as new signings are made, players leave, and i further examine the fixtures and rotation but here's what i've got for now.

    any thoughts?

    de Gea, Federici
    Ivanovic, Lescott, Cueller, Fabio, Dawson
    Hazard, Kagawa, Dempsey, Taarabt, Noble
    Torres, Tevez, Pog

No problem. I do agree he is tempting. Price-wise he is awesome but only represents value if he actually plays. Think I'd be worried about wasting a city spot on someone who may not get gametime.

Maybe just keep an eye on pre-season and any news that comes out nearer the start of the season.

Reasons for investing in Man Citys defence

the last game toure started was Arsenal at home in december, since that game lescott played the remaining 20 (i think)

    in those 20 games city:

kept clean sheets in 11 games = 6pts for defender
conceded 1 goal in 7 games = 2pts for defender
conceded 2+ goals in 2 games = 1pt for defender

This totals 82pts so an average of 4.1pts without save points bonus and goals

For £21m you can have hart, kompany and lescott and fill the remaining 4 spots for 16m so £37m spent on defence and keeper

The downside is no aguero/silva but with city likely to add a striker to the ranks there is a chance that aguero may suffer a little rotation if mancini chooses to play him in the champions league

    thoughts on this strategy?

de gea in goal would only save u 0.5m as youd have to go for a playing keeper, also with utds injury problems and early fixtures im not too keen

the only top team city have to play away from home before wildcard time is chelsea (and maybe liverpool could be counted)

You like a double-up or a treble up, but the downside you mention is an important one.

Aguero is a top captaincy candidate and can easily hit a double figure score in games where he is expected to.

I think with the opening double gameweek there is merit in Federici in addition to your keeper combo possibly scoring more save points than Hart. Both Kompany and Lescott are capable of popping up with a goal and so on this occasion rather than restricting yourself and being solely reliant on a clean sheet, you may be better off with just Lescott and Kompany in defence with Aguero upfront and then find a cheaper goalkeeper combo.

I also agree Lescott and Kompany are nailed on and then you only need to find one other reasonable defender. Jenkinson appears value at 4.5 while Sagna remains out and Cole/Terry are worthy considerations for the double gameweek, but while you want three from City you'll probably want three from Chelsea, so for me I'm just going with Lescott and Aguero, keeping money and room for Cole, Lampard (c), Torres.

I think I would only double on the City defence with Hart and Lescott, but I know you do like a threes up on your defences.

the more I look at United first 10 fixtures, the more I don't like. Everton, Liverpool, Newcastle, Chelsea away with Arsenal and Spurs at home.

combine that with the amount of rotation up top that were likely to see and the injuries at the back, dare I say it, I might go without any United

Name who though? three of the the decent fixtures come up in GW2,3 and 4. Are you confident in picking the United midfield from the start that you know is nailed on? Combine the fact that champions league starts before GW4 and I can see even more rotation. Try and name the team and see how many players you leave out? If they play one up top and that is Rooney can you really see Welbeck of Hernandez not getting a game all season. would either mean Rooney is rested (doubt it) or he drops back making his 12 mil price tag a lot to swallow and taking Kagawa in the hole role with it.

He could be, just need a CB to leave to guarantee he starts - Lambert could play an attacking CM alongside El Ahmadi (Gardner or Bannan). But i'm 95% sure he'll play somewhere. Lowton also played the whole game at RB yesterday , but again we'd need Hutton to leave to ensure he played.

I hope not 😆 Weimann is a better prospect, Delfouneso has been around for a while and just isn't good enough. I rate Agbonlahor but I'd rather start with Weimann and bent up front, or Ireland behind bent if we play another attacking CM like Gardner or Bannan.

Saying that, Delfouneso has had quite a bit of game time in the US, suggesting he could play. No point getting him for FF purposes though, and Bent and Agbonlahor are both injured so it's not surprising him and Weimann are starting (you wouldn't want either as a lone striker).

Villa's fixtures are great, but I always fall into the trap of having too many Villa players.

Don't you rate Weimann higher? Delfouneso hasn't had a run of games, but he's been around for a while so should've broken through by now considering we've always been short up front.

Hard to say. They are 2 totally different types of players. If anything, they would compliment each others style of play and work well together. Weimann coming in just behind Fonz as a playmaker, Fonz straight up top with his pace causing problems in the box.

If Bent is fit, Weimann would work better with Bent. Whereas Fonz would only get the chance to shine in Bents position in front of either Gabby or Weimann.

Nah, would want some kind of additional goal threat from a defender if I got a Villa player. A lot of defensive options for a maximum of £5m (will be a couple of 4.5m starters) and also a lot of good goalkeeping pairs. He will play, of course.

Good point. I am thinking Mignolet is the pic of the crop in the 5m keeper catergory with a 4.5m backup to rotate (currently with Frederici in my team)

^ This. I probably won't have any, but if I do it will probably be a fullback. Possibly Lichaj if he nails down a place.

Tend to agree re the back 4. I expect to see some changes at the back between now and the start of the season so its all speculative. My Villa coverage at the moment is El Ahmadi. Defensive midfielder but is really impressing by the sounds and sounds like top value at 4.5m

Right I think I'm happy with this bunch. What say ye?

    Schwarzer - Begovic

    Vermaelen - Ivanovic - Clichy - Cuellar - Demel

    Bale - Valencia - Taarabt - Noble - Maloney

    Aguero - Torres - Petric

.5 in bank as plan to Ivan > Vertonghen/Baines in GW2. No Swans for the nice fixtures but dont really fancy them this year to be honest. Sinclair appeals but Olympics might take it out of him.

    Solid?

I'd rather have Rooney over Aguero (i have both) and Silva over Valencia. With Van Persie gone Rooney is so easy to captain. Just pick him for home games against mid to lower level teams.

ya. But Rooney is more of a flat pitch bully. based on my unreliable recall over the last few years. He scores a massive %age of his goals against them. Aguero i don't think is that skewed. But i don't have any stats to back me up.

No. Look at Monk last season at Swansea, or even Dawson himself who didn't get time even weeks after his return from injury.
Spurs defense was poor last night anyway, I don't think this high line will work at Tottenham either, especially if Dawson is centre-back. Avoiding.

Here are some values from last season for Points Per 90 Mins for goalies. Its not quiet as accurate as PPG, but it'll do at a pinch:

    DDG; 4.62
    Hart; 4.37
    Vorm; 4.27
    Mignolet; 4.26
    Krul; 4.10
    Friedal; 4.03
    Foster 3.78
    Cech; 3.73

That's not an exhaustive list, but it gives a flavour. And for me, the flavour is Mignolet with a hint of De Gea.
