Reading continued their busy summer of squad restructuring last week with the capture of Adrian Mariappa from Watford on a three-year contract. The 25-year-old arrives in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £3m and finally earns the centre-half a move to the Premier League, after interest from both Newcastle and Wigan midway during the 2011/12 campaign failed to come to fruition:

Mariappa is the fifth player to arrive at the Madejski, following Pavel Pogrebnyak, Nicky Shorey, Danny Guthrie and Garath McCleary to the club and, with Chris Gunter subsequently signing up from Nottingham Forest, Reading boss Brian McDermott has wasted little time in bolstering his squad after last year’s promotion from the Championship. McDermott spoke of his relief at finally landing Mariappa after pursuing the player for a number of weeks:

I’m delighted to get the deal to sign Aidy over the line, we have been chasing him all summer. He’s been a very important player for Watford over a number of years, he is well known to most of our players already and also the staff here. Every single person I have spoken to about him has nothing but good things to say about him both as a player and as a person.

The Statistics

Up until now, Mariappa has spent his entire career at Vicarage Road. Working his way up through the Watford youth system, he also skippered the reserves before signing his first professional contract in the summer of 2005. The defender made just three league appearances in his initial season with the first-team as the Hornets clinched promotion to the Premier League, though his one and only campaign in the top-flight was less than successful. Mariappa was hauled off at half-time in the opening game of 2006/07 and was only afforded a route back into the starting lineup due to injuries to others, with his versatility enabling him to deputise at right-back.

It took Mariappa until the 2008-9 campaign before he became a regular for the Hornets but the past four seasons have seen him firmly established as a crucial component of the club’s back-four. A run of 113 consecutive league games – the fourth highest in the club’s history – was only ended by suspension but it was his consistency of performance that caught the eye of many in the Premier League. In total, he made 216 league appearances for Watford, scoring four goals and assisting four, and departs with the club’s Player of the Year for 2011/12 under his belt. Mariappa also kick-started his international career with Jamaica this year and has so far made four appearances.

The Prospects

Although many expect the £3m man will slot straight into the Royals’ backline, it’s perhaps a little too early to make assumptions regarding McDermott’s plans. Granted, Mariappa has the advantage of pace and mobility over both of last season’s first-choice centre-halves, Alex Pearce and Kaspars Gorkss, but Reading’s tactics, which deploy a pair of deep-lying central midfielders in front of their defence, mean the Royals are rarely susceptible to counter-attacks. Unless McDermott decides to change his approach, then, speed at the back is unlikely to be a determining factor when assessing Reading’s likely lineup.

With Gorkss and Pearce at the heart of defence, McDermott’s men racked up 20 clean sheets in 2011/12 – the most of the three promoted sides – and offer Fantasy managers a cut-price option at the back as we look to balance our budgets. From an Fantasy perspective, the ideal scenario would see Mariappa and Gorkss strike up a partnership; both are priced at 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), while Pearce comes in at 4.5. In the Sky Sports game, it’s a similar situation – Pearce is the most expensive of the trio at 4.2, with Gorkss at 4.1 and Mariappa at a mere 3.8. Intriguingly, Mariappa has started alongside Gorkss against Sheffield Wednesday this evening.

Fortunately, Reading still have plenty of pre-season friendlies for McDermott to trial the various permutations ahead of double Gameweek 1, which sees the club host Stoke before travelling to Chelsea. Aside from the double, Reading’s opening schedule isn’t particularly enticing, though; trips to Sunderland and West Brom, in addition to home clashes against Spurs and Newcastle, may see McDermott’s men struggle to keep out their opponents. Such a run of fixtures may be enough to deter many from investing, allowing us to assess both the likelihood of Mariappa’s game time and Reading’s potential for clean sheets before the fixture list becomes a little kinder.

Burning your wildcard in the hope to get a lead by gw2 is a bit self defeating imo. No lead will be big enough to warrant that. Take it easy.. its a marathon not a race.

Know it sounds bad, but hey I finished top 10k last year with a poor start and did wc gw4.
I'll have all I need after gw1 tbh... Can view my rivals and block them off somewhat, some juicy Sunderland, UTD, Everton and Spurs fixtures, do can cast my eye over how the likes of Sess, Jelly, Siggy, Rooney, Pienaar, and Kagawa perform 🙂
Can determine if Demel will start, if It's gonna be Kaboul vs. Dawson.

Will prob regret it but sometimes u need to take a gamble.
Final team I'm happy with gw1 before wc, unless injuries occur:

                Federici

                Ivanovic, Lescott, Hangeland

Silva - Bale - Hazard- McAnuff

You aren't guaranteed that Hazard and Torres will score more than 4 points over the two games and if either is sent off, they could even score negative points. This isn't worth wildcarding this early.

Fair point, will look out for new signings. Chelsea will prob get a RB and FWD, then plans will change. Also wanna see if Wigan and Newcastle can carry there form over to the new season. Been losing sleep over picking a team, so this makes me feel better.

Strong, maybe too strong. Since you'll be benching two 4.5s each week, you maybe be better off downgrading both to 4.0 and using the 1.0 saved to upgrade to Friedel who you could play most weeks

Would need to go to to the rotation checker to be sure but WHM rotate well with a lot of teams - Alcaraz to McCartney IMO. RDG also rotate well with tons so Gunter works too, dunno if you wanna double though.

AA my advice would be to consider Cashley for Ivanovic. Guaranteed to play more, same price and last year which was quiet by cashleys standard he still managed to outscore ivanovich by 31 points. I dont see it being too different this year

If you think he will play most of the season then go for it, i'm just not so sure. his points last year took into acct his 3 goals, as I said Ashley is pretty much as nailed on as you can get. his score last year was his worst in the last 4 and still he was miles ahead on points scored.

I wanna go with this but am having major doubts on lamps and guthrie. I always like a value rotation for my defence. (3:4:3 formation)

    DDG, Federici
    Cashley, Hangeland, Gunter, Demmel, Fonte
Bale, Silva, "Its in The Sun", Dyer, Guthrie
    Torres(ade 2nd week) Aguero, Graham

Gives me 6 dgw players 1st week, Swansea/Reading good fixtures. Is lamps so past it that the 9 mil should go elsewhere (I don't want Hazard)

Right first post on here this year - it appears i have a fairly generic team.

    Vorm, Begovic

    Cole, Lescott, Colocinni, Cuellar, Demel

    Lampard, Kagawa, Noble, Silva, Maloney

    Torres, Podolski, Graham

    1.5m in bank

Considering doing:: Lescott, Maloney,Lampard (1.5m in bank) > Ramires, Clichy, VDV (0.0m in bank)

Id like spurs coverage ready for GW's 2-5

    Any other areas for improvement?

If we do land Lloris (not sure it's likely tbh) then yeah avoid Fridel and Lloris at 5.5 (I imagine) would be a good pick.
It could go either way with Spurs defence - AVB failed at Chelsea in that (and other) respect but he was inrecdibly defensively sound at Porto - they conceded something like 13 goals all season.

at present he is great value, nailed on and cheap route into a team with a solid defensive foundation. For me the rotation with Green looks very solid, wouldn't go near Reading.

I think he's the best option at 5.5, unless Lloris signs. And I think Lloris would come in at 6.0, as the doubts over Friedel may have played a part in his price.

Yeah, the 'can't take any hits' bugaboo really bit me on the DGW ... I managed the whole season without a hit (wanted to see if I could do it, as I quite like making lots of them, normally).

In fairness, I'm still happy where I ended up - especially considering the sleep-throughs.

I'm the complete opposite, not overly fussed about mini leagues, just about what my overall rank is. I never make transfers considering an "opponent's" team, it never even crosses my mind.

This is why i quit H2H leagues last season and it did help. In previous seasons no matter how much i tried i couldn't help but take opponents transfers into account. Not great

    Evening superheroes.
I've been tinkering for days and days and days and I simply keep coming back to a 3 x 4m defender rotation (along with 2 x 4.5m GKs and 2 x 6.5m DEFs)
It just spreads the love so beautifully in MID and ATT.

    Good evening sports fans!

What do you think out of these two options?

    A)
    Krul
    Lescott, Vermaelen, Baines
    Bale Valencia Hazard, Pienaar, Silva
    Torres (GW1) The Pog

    or

    B)
    DDG
    Vidic, Vermaelen, Ekotto
    Bale, Valencia, Hazard, McClean, Kagawa,
    Aguero, Torres (GW1)

    Torres for Rooney GW2

    Subs for both:
    Begovic, Fabio, Michu, Vaz Te

It all depends on whether Dempsey leaves. If he does, Frei could be a bargain.

Just a few question on your defence

No United or City? (though maybe Terry to Vidic for GW2?)

Williams and Brede don't rotate or are you planning to play Brede every week and rotate Williams, Cuellar and Col (incidentally I prefer Santon to Colo)

think I might just be safer sticking with what I have, Alcaraz included? I may be benching a couple of 4.5 players, but it's easier to switch down than up.

Yeah, I might just stick with what i've got, no point in spending loads of dosh on the last spot in your defence.

                Jask/Bego

Terry/Vidic, Lescott, Cuellar, Fabio and Alcaraz seems pretty good to me. I'm monitoring this Ness bloke at Stoke though, if he looks like starting regularly in the mid I'd consider getting him and Demel alongside Fabio and getting Migs and another keeper.

Demi, you think Im nuts to wc gw2? Thinking of packing the team with 6 DGW'ers, Bale, Sila and Aguero and pray, then can check out:

      - Which cheap def are nailed on
      - Check most popular players rivals have and "block" then as corner stones of my team.
      - Check on Wigan, Everton, Newcastle form against top opposition
      - Have Juicy Sunderland, UTD, Spurs and Everton Fixtures from GW2

May change my mind. But cant sleep otherwise! Doing my head in!

No, i don't think you should do that. Most people will not have 6 DGWers and if they do, they will be taking lots of hits, or wildcarding straight away(bad idea imo).

Think you should plan for 4 or 5 DGW'ers with the rest of your squad all nailed on so you limit the transfers you need to make. Just take each GW as it is. There is an international break to come to, so if you wanted to WC early, i'd do it then as opposed to straight after GW1. There's no guarantee you'll garner everything you need to know on the squads and who does/doesn't start in just 2 GW's.
