Reading continued their busy summer of squad restructuring last week with the capture of Adrian Mariappa from Watford on a three-year contract. The 25-year-old arrives in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £3m and finally earns the centre-half a move to the Premier League, after interest from both Newcastle and Wigan midway during the 2011/12 campaign failed to come to fruition:

Mariappa is the fifth player to arrive at the Madejski, following Pavel Pogrebnyak, Nicky Shorey, Danny Guthrie and Garath McCleary to the club and, with Chris Gunter subsequently signing up from Nottingham Forest, Reading boss Brian McDermott has wasted little time in bolstering his squad after last year’s promotion from the Championship. McDermott spoke of his relief at finally landing Mariappa after pursuing the player for a number of weeks:

I’m delighted to get the deal to sign Aidy over the line, we have been chasing him all summer. He’s been a very important player for Watford over a number of years, he is well known to most of our players already and also the staff here. Every single person I have spoken to about him has nothing but good things to say about him both as a player and as a person.

The Statistics

Up until now, Mariappa has spent his entire career at Vicarage Road. Working his way up through the Watford youth system, he also skippered the reserves before signing his first professional contract in the summer of 2005. The defender made just three league appearances in his initial season with the first-team as the Hornets clinched promotion to the Premier League, though his one and only campaign in the top-flight was less than successful. Mariappa was hauled off at half-time in the opening game of 2006/07 and was only afforded a route back into the starting lineup due to injuries to others, with his versatility enabling him to deputise at right-back.

It took Mariappa until the 2008-9 campaign before he became a regular for the Hornets but the past four seasons have seen him firmly established as a crucial component of the club’s back-four. A run of 113 consecutive league games – the fourth highest in the club’s history – was only ended by suspension but it was his consistency of performance that caught the eye of many in the Premier League. In total, he made 216 league appearances for Watford, scoring four goals and assisting four, and departs with the club’s Player of the Year for 2011/12 under his belt. Mariappa also kick-started his international career with Jamaica this year and has so far made four appearances.

The Prospects

Although many expect the £3m man will slot straight into the Royals’ backline, it’s perhaps a little too early to make assumptions regarding McDermott’s plans. Granted, Mariappa has the advantage of pace and mobility over both of last season’s first-choice centre-halves, Alex Pearce and Kaspars Gorkss, but Reading’s tactics, which deploy a pair of deep-lying central midfielders in front of their defence, mean the Royals are rarely susceptible to counter-attacks. Unless McDermott decides to change his approach, then, speed at the back is unlikely to be a determining factor when assessing Reading’s likely lineup.

With Gorkss and Pearce at the heart of defence, McDermott’s men racked up 20 clean sheets in 2011/12 – the most of the three promoted sides – and offer Fantasy managers a cut-price option at the back as we look to balance our budgets. From an Fantasy perspective, the ideal scenario would see Mariappa and Gorkss strike up a partnership; both are priced at 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), while Pearce comes in at 4.5. In the Sky Sports game, it’s a similar situation – Pearce is the most expensive of the trio at 4.2, with Gorkss at 4.1 and Mariappa at a mere 3.8. Intriguingly, Mariappa has started alongside Gorkss against Sheffield Wednesday this evening.

Fortunately, Reading still have plenty of pre-season friendlies for McDermott to trial the various permutations ahead of double Gameweek 1, which sees the club host Stoke before travelling to Chelsea. Aside from the double, Reading’s opening schedule isn’t particularly enticing, though; trips to Sunderland and West Brom, in addition to home clashes against Spurs and Newcastle, may see McDermott’s men struggle to keep out their opponents. Such a run of fixtures may be enough to deter many from investing, allowing us to assess both the likelihood of Mariappa’s game time and Reading’s potential for clean sheets before the fixture list becomes a little kinder.

Why is no one looking at Demba Ba? I mean yes, Cisse is on his team and more likely to be the one to score, but last time I checked, Ba is only 7.5m and produces quite well for a cheap striker

yeah i agree but so many striker options you want 3 talismen and cisse is newcastle's. But if you're struggling for cash then certainly a good option.

    Terry, Hangeland, Fabio, Cuellar, Alcaraz

    Hazard, Maloney, Taarabt, Walters, Dyer

    Rooney, Aguero, Bent

Rodgers is allowed to sign a Swansea player once another club has submitted a bid.

So Hereford Utd. could bid 10 pounds for Allen thus allowing Liverpool to come in with the "real" bid.

FPL rule change needed: defensive midfielders get bonus points for clean sheets, say extra 3 points? It would mean the likes of Parker, Barry etc being picked more, not ignored all the time. Everyones team would be much more different and would really open things up more tactically. Maybe mean two categories or midfielder, defensive or attacking.

Think this is a must, because how many midfielders are not chosen, because they havent got a cat in hells chance of getting an assist or goal!!!

Two categories of midfielder is silly, you could then break it down into attacking and defensive full backs or second strikers for example 😆

Why do we want to even it out anyway? Don't understand this argument.

Because you immediately rule out picking a large number of top players based on their fantasy value alone. Of course it's the same for everyone, but that means we all end up with 5 attacking midfielders, wingers, OOP strikers. The game is structured so that Lucas, Modric, Essien, Parker, Tiote (or Scholes, Keane, Viera, Makelele in past seasons) are unpickable, whereas a few simple tweaks to the FPL scoring criteria could change all that.

It's certainly a less ridiculous change than the BP system.

Song is not unpickable. Neither would Viera be. Loads of people are picking Yaya. Anyhow, there's already controversy over whether players like Gervinho, Sessegnon, and Walcott are midfielders or forwards. This is taking that problem to yet another level.

That's a better solution for making DMs and CBs more attractive. It allowed Xabi Alonso to rack up the most points one round.

I think it overcomplicates it. They are priced according to their scoring. If Parker got more points for CS, then he would be priced higher. What would you call Yaya - defensive or attacking?

BP system just needs to be reworked/new metrics added (tackles, balls recovered, etc.). This would reward the DMs who deserve it.

Possibly a 1 or 2 point bonus. The inevitable problem would be that FPL would wrongly OOP categorise a more attacking/creative player and that player would then end up in practically everyone's team which is boring.

Or they could possibly introduce the recovered balls rule for midfielders only.

Would disagree there, how would you classify a 'defensive' mid? Yaya sits deep but bombs up the pitch. Besides - name one. There are no Makeleles in the league, it would just get messy. A better idea is maybe 2 points for 60+ passes and 5 points for 100+ passes or something like that. Reward passing, not the inability to score or assist.

Same as you classify any other player surely? Yaya sometimes plays as a CAm, sometimes CM and sometimes DM - midfielder. Song is a bit more borderline but probably a defender who had an exception season (and yes Doos if he was a defender I'd have him).
Others like Lucas, Parker, Diarra, Carrick are easy to say they are a defensive mid.

        +1

OGs need to go imo. Absolute joke. If they want some more negative points they should award -2 to anyone who gives away a penalty.

90% of the time own goals are entirely faultless whereas the opposite is usually true when a penalty is given away

Exactly, swapping OG rules to pens would be great (until my defenders started giving away pens!)

Assists need a bit of common sense and human intervention, same for BPs.

Excellent post. I agree. It's a shame that in over 10 years of playing various Fantasy games, I have never once picked Vieira, Scholes, Petit, Keane, Makelele, Parker, Mascherano etc. - and yet these players have been invaluable to their clubs and indeed the very success of the Premier League.

It seems crazy that in the 2012-13 FPL game, we immediately rule out selecting the likes of Modric, Barry, Parker, Lucas, Tiote et al, simply because the FPL scoring criteria doesn't reward their efforts and undoubted talents.

But that's the thing. Skill of the FPL? How much skill does it require for 99% of players to know that more defensive-minded players score fewer points over a season?

It wouldn't require labelling a player 'defensive midfield' or 'attacking midfield' anyway, just give points for a certain number of successful passes or successful tackles. It's worked with giving keepers BPs for saves made - suddenly a goalie like Al Habsi can score well despite conceding because he is a penalty expert and makes a lot of saves each match.

It takes NO skill for me to know - before the season has even started - that I wouldn't touch Britton, Carrick, Parker, Modric, Sandro or Tiote with a barge pole, despite being very good players. To me, that's a shame. I like the idea of FPL managers being able to select a complete midfield - not just filling in blanks with wingers, OOP strikers and set-piece takers.

The jigsaw is being constantly tinkered. I think the "3rd Death Star" is not far from completion. Just juggling, planning etc.

Most difficult thing is my defence. I really want to spend as few a transfers as poss long term, but getting the right balance is tough. Worth making some brave decisions like selling Lescott and DDG.

Rotation of nearly all the 6-6.5 defenders is infuriating. Think only Cole will be worth TBH, but that leads me on to...

Rotation of my cheap defenders is an absolute nightmare as I thought when I first went through the fixtures. Incredibly difficult. 3 way rotation looks inevitable.

Key thing this year is being open minded to all combos (too open minded really). I want Jelly badly, but if it's no good for the greater good/ rest of my team - then he's out.

Might have to do the unthinkable and dump Fabio. I think he could do really well, but fitting QPR into any decent defensive rotation is a killer. My only options are Wigan or Southampton.

+1, absolute myth last season except swansea/newcastle and even that the away side got cleanies almost as much

It's one of the things it's easy to get carried away with pre season.

One too many big-hitter in GK/ DEF for my liking.
Silva over Aguero is something I'm contemplating too...but I'm edging towards Aguero.

It gives me the choice of playing 4 at the back.
I'm thinking of getting both for the first week and then getting Rooney in for GW2.
