Roberto Martinez added to the growing pool of Scottish-born talent currently plying their trade at Wigan last week by snapping up the highly-rated Fraser Fyvie from Aberdeen on a three-year contract. The 19-year-old arrives in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £500,000 and is the Latics’ first signing of the summer transfer window:

Fyvie is the sixth player from north of the border to join up at the DW Stadium, following Shaun Maloney, Gary Caldwell, Conor Sammon, James McCarthy and James McArthur to the Latics, and is expected to provide competition for the latter two for a central midfield role in Martinez’s favoured 3-4-2-1 formation next term. The Wigan boss was glowing in his assessment of the new boy, going on to say:

I’m excited because we’re signing such a strong character and a great personality at just 19 years of age. Technically he’s very gifted, enjoys playing in the midfield where he can cover large areas, he’s very powerful off the ball and in possession is someone who can read the tempo of the game very well. Also you have to remember that for such a young player he’s played a lot of games in the SPL at a high standard which shows his maturity.

The Statistics

Making his debut in the 2009-10 season, Fyvie became the youngest player ever to feature for Aberdeen and earned Man of the Match award on his debut against Hamilton. He scored just one goal over 25 appearances in his first campaign and, in doing so, became the youngest player to notch in a Scottish Premier League match. The following season was a disaster, however; Fyvie made just five league appearances after sustaining a cruciate ligament injury in August but returned to action last term without any ill-effects.

Firmly established in the Dons’ first XI under former Scotland boss Craig Brown, the youngster made 28 appearances in 2011/12 but, after picking up interest from plenty suitors, made it clear midway through the season that he was determined to ply his trade in England this August. In total, he made 58 appearances for the Pittodrie outfit, scoring twice and providing four assists, and has also represented his country at Under 17 and Under 19 level.

Talking about the player’s potential, Brown could hardly commend Fyvie higher when assessing the midfielder’s abilities:

I’ve worked with some of the best Scottish midfielders over the years, including John Collins, Paul Lambert and Barry Ferguson. I was also the assistant manager of Scotland when Paul McStay made his big breakthrough. They were all midfielders of exceptional quality, but Fraser has the potential to become the best of the lot. He’s not there yet, but he has that wee bit of extra dig about him – the sort of extra quality that helped Paul Scholes become one of the best midfielders in Europe.

The Prospects

Martinez has a history of blooding young talent at the DW, with age clearly no barometer of quality in the Spaniard’s opinion. McCarthy and Victor Moses, for example, made 33 and 36 starts in the season gone by, despite both players being just 21 years of age. Having lost Mohamed Diame, Steve Gohouri and Hendry Thomas already this summer, Martinez clearly has room for more personnel in the middle of the park but with McCarthy and McArthur now seemingly established in the two central midfield slots, the Wigan boss alluded to the fact that Fyvie may be afforded time to adjust to his new surroundings:

The physical demands of the Premier League are very different to the SPL and bridging that gap takes time, but Fraser has time on his side and we’re all desperate to see him enjoying his football, welcomed by the fans. He wants to compete for his place straight away, and we’ve seen with the likes of James McCarthy and James McArthur how big that jump can be at first, but look at them now and they’re reliable players who we all take great pride in watching.

In all likelihood, Fyvie may well be a peripheral figure if Martinez’s cautious approach with McCarthy and McArthur in their respective debut campaigns is anything to go by. While 19 of the former’s 20 appearances came in the first XI in his initial season at the DW, as many as 15 of the latter’s 18 games arrived from the bench. Priced at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 4.7 in the Sky Sports game, Fyvie is one of the cheapest options around but looks to have little appeal if Martinez plans to ease him into the fold.

Analysing the fixture list, home games against (CHE, STO, FUL, EVE) and trips to Southampton and Swansea in the first eight Gameweeks offer plenty of hope for the Latics after a stuttering start to the previous campaign. With the 3-4-2-1 system now firmly established, Martinez’s men have an opportunity to maintain the brilliant run of form that earned them wins in seven of the last nine in 2011/12 and could well be an altogether different proposition for Fantasy managers this time round. It’s more than doubtful as to whether Fyvie can make an early impression, however, with Maloney and Jean Beausejour both likely to afford us the most prosperous cut-price route into the Latics’ midfield across the Fantasy games.

    Mills and Pallister say RVP should go to Man United. But Arsenal have as much chance of winning the league (if RVP stays) as Man United if they get off to a good start 😛

    Therefore Man U is a somewhat sideways move, a backwards move even, if you consider that he wont have the same legendary status he has already built at Arsenal over the years. The fans will love him well beyond retirement at Arsenal. He would need to prove himself again at Man U for the same to happen there and that wont be as straightforward as it seems. If silverware is the main issue than City is the correct choice, otherwise there is no point. So RVP should stay.

    Frustrations vented 🙂

            I agree on the Man U bias here (simply because they have the largest proportion of fans here). But as a Gooner I still realistically disagree on us having as good a chance of winning the league. Not enough proven players and not enough depth, particularly for fullbacks and central attacking midfield.

              I've gone through it so many times, every year apart from last year the media builds Arsenal's "title challenge" around the winter so they can make a big story of them failing again in the spring. Unfortunately with less investment our squad is not a title-winning squad.

                I don't know. I've experienced a lot of disappointment too lately, but people don't realise that besides United and CIty, Arsenal was the last team in the title race last season. The season before that, Arsenal was in with a shout for an unprecedented quadruple before Birmingham put an end to that. The fact is that Arsenal challenges for the title every season. The bull about needing to leave Arsenal to win trophies is just that. Bull. The only team that has been more consistent than Arsenal in challenging for the title is Manchester United.

                  Yeah, but there's title challenges and "title challenges". Ours have been pretty half-hearted, we trail along x number of points behind, but don't look like actually winning the thing. I'd call it more "runner up challenge"...

              Yeah, maybe a slight exaggeration but if, as he says Arsenal get off to a good start and RVP stays, they've got a pretty good squad and the momentum could take some stopping.

                  I think if you look back at Prem winners, they rarely win it with a single big scorer. You need at least two getting into double figures. Cole-Yorke, Henry-Pires/Bergkamp, Aguero-Dzeko-Balotelli, Ronaldo-Rooney-Tevez, Sutton-Shearer...

                    Not think (as he mentions above) that if RVP stays, he and Podolski or RVP & Walcott could hit double figures this season?

                    I don't know, there's a lot of negativity surrounding Arsenal at the moment but if I were an Arsenal fan, I'd have faith that Wenger was setting the club in good stead.

                    I suppose it's possible isn't it! I think the prevailing feeling of Arsenal fans I know is resignation that we are following the Financial Fair Play rules and getting about as good results as can be expected when loads of the big boys aren't.

      Yes, but other legends have moved (Cantona and Sheringham) and proved themselves. It is possible to be a legend at two clubs. He should go where he'll play and get paid the most. I don't understand all this loyalty business when you are dealing with a career that lasts around 18 years tops and six figure weekly salaries. Take the money, retire and run a pub/small country/business empire...delete depending on salary.

    DDG (Federici)

    Vertonghen - Clichy - Hangeland (Gorkss, Cuellar)

    Bale - Hazard - Noble - De Guzman (Maloney)

    Pog - Aguero - Rooney

    Seems to be a pretty standard team. Been thinking about downgrading somewhere in defence or midfield to swap Pog for Graham up front. Thoughts?

      Slightly updated now. Swapped DDG for Friedel and Vertonghen for Cole, that was a good shout. Opted to keep Pog. With the spare 0.5 I upgraded Cuellar to Coloccini.

      I did think about downgrading Hazard to Kagawa. Both are gambles but with the extra 1.0 I could have gone for Graham, or even Sinclair instead of De Guzman. But didn't go for it in the end.

      He's definitely one I'm considering. Villa got a pretty decent set of early fixtures, they are supposedly going on the attack this year with Lambert, and Nzog will surely be nailed. Proven FPL talent when he was at Wigan, didnt perform last yr cos Mcleish is atrocious and doesnt know what attacking paly is

    Friedel - Federici

    Ivanovic - Lescott - Cuellar - Gunter - Demel

    Hazard - Bale - Tarrabt/Michu - Noble - Maloney

    Aguero - Graham - Torres (-> Rooney GW2)

    Fed (De Gea)
    Fabio Terry (c) Hangeland (Cuellar Demel)
    Bale Ramires Nolan/Michu McClean (Maloney)

    GW2: Torres -> Rooney
    GW3: Ramires -> Pienaar/N'Zog/Nolan

      Yeah ... bit of an "almost" team for me - e.g. Tevez vs Aguero, Ramires vs Hazard. Your plan is scuppered as soon as Tevez doesn't start. You then keep him for GW2, have to take him out before GW3 leaving you stretched to start xi.

      I do quite like it though, P Cisse pick is bold and I like it.

      Not sure that having 2 freebies before GW3 and having 3 Chelsea players in GW1 are exclusive.

      I plan to have 3 Chelsea players and not make a transfer before GW2, then ditch 2 of them before GW3. Will be easy to downgrade a Chelsea player too.

        Yeah, I was trying very hard not to have more than one bench warmer. He does turn into Mitch in GW3 though to catch a lot of Swansea's nice fixtures while Taraabt sits out his bad ones.

        I just have a real feeling about Nasri. He was really heating up at the tail end of last season. Members area has some very compelling stats on him. For example, try the comparison tool between Nasri and Yaya for the last 6 gameweeks.

      This looks well interesting because it seems to be built on FPL! Is this the extra-nerdy American version basically?

    Something slightly different ...

    DDG, Federici (bear with me here)
    Ivanovic, Clichy, Wilson, Tomkins, Gunter (yeah, hang on...)
    Kagawa, N'Zogbia, De Guzman, Maloney, Frei (interested?)
    Aguero, Torres, Rooney (BOOM)

    Any thoughts?

      Frei is on my radar. He'll come screeching into view if Dempsey moves.

      Assuming Torres -> Ade

      It's interesting, obviously slightly weak midfield, but the only mids you can't swap Kagawa for that you might want are probably Bale, Silva, Dempsey (at Fulham) or another Utd mid, and you've got those teams well covered apart from Fulham.

      Food for thought.

        Yeah, I thought my midfield would look sh*te but it's not too bad. I could even downgrade Ivanovic if necessary

      Too top heavy. Looks nice, but gives you zero flexibility and you're going to be taking hits early on to knee jerk to the premium midfielders who do start the season sharp.

      I went with this style strategy initially, but I just think you need 2 big hitters in midfield to start with so you can easily transfer in/out players on form like Bale, Valencia, Hazard e.t.c...

      Ok, I know it's slightly ridiculous, but it looks nice, and that front line could work wonders 😉

      like it
      might do
      Kag to yaya and upgrade other mids
      or
      Clichy to Collocinni and upgrade other mids

        Never been convinced by Yaya FF wise. But your point about the defence is valid, worth thinking about.

      His place in the starting XI is in doubt atm, things arent clear yet, Hazard however will be nailed. Charity shield will probs be a good indicator as to whether he'll start, but even then it could be doubtful. If he does get in the XI though I'm defo tempted, 7million would be a huge bargain

        I don't think that Hazard will be nailed on. There's just too much quality in Chelsea's midfield.
