Our series of articles analysing the chief protagonists from the three promoted clubs has already brought Rickie Lambert and Jobi McAnuff under the spotlight earlier this week. Today, it’s the turn of Southampton’s wing wizard Adam Lallana who, alongside Lambert, was one of only two Saints players to feature in the npower Championship Team of the Season for 2011/12:

The Statistics

As a youngster, Lallana was a member of the Bournemouth Centre of Excellence, where his talents were spotted by a member of the Southampton Academy and, as a result, he joined the club as a 12-year-old. The midfielder was a key component of the Saints’ FA Youth Cup squads that reached the final and semi-final respectively before he stepped up to the first-team in 2006.

The first couple of seasons were a struggle for Lallana; managing just six league appearances and a single goal, he was farmed out to Bournemouth on loan for a month, where he featured three times before returning to St Mary’s. In 2008-09, however, he finally nailed down a regular role, scoring once and providing five assist in 40 appearances. The following season, however, Lallana’s attacking talents really came to the fore – 15 goals and three assists in 44 league games were indicative of his threat, while eight goals and 11 assists in 2010/11 helped the Saints win promotion from League One. Last term saw Lallana produce double figures for both goals and assists for the first time in his burgeoning career (10 and 11 respectively) as Nigel Adkins’ side sealed their return to the top-flight by finishing a point behind Reading in second place.

The Prospects

Adkins’ attack-minded 4-4-2 helped Southampton rack up 85 goals last term – the most of the three promoted clubs – and Lallana’s marauding left flank raids are bound to catch the attention of many a Fantasy manager, bearing in mind he played a part in 24% of his side’s goals in 2011/12, second only to Rickie Lambert.

Priced at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and a mere 4.9 in the Sky Sports game and with a fair share of both corners and free-kicks, the 24-year-old looks an enticing proposition, though the side’s recent formations in the pre-season friendlies may give us some cause for consternation. Adkins has trialled 4-3-2-1 and 4-3-3 systems over the Saints’ three full matches thus far and shifted Lallana into a deeper central role in the midfield three. After yesterday’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Ajax, Adkins admitted his side are likely to change tactics over the course of next season and will be less “gung-ho” in their approach in the Premier League – an indication, perhaps, that the 4-4-2 will be rolled out mainly at St Mary’s as the promoted club look to tighten up at the back on their travels.

Certainly, the Saints’ horrendous opening schedule is likely enough to deter us from initially investing in their attacking assets – with showdowns against City, United and Arsenal in the first four Gameweeks, they could barely ask for a more difficult start to their season. After that, though, the fixture list is a little kinder and could sway plenty to take a punt – home clashes against Villa and Fulham and a trip to West Ham are the type of matches their attacking approach should prosper in and if Adkins’ men are follow in the footsteps of last year’s promoted clubs and stay afloat, Lallana will surely be crucial to their cause.

Well i just posed this question on the old post, but i will pose it again here now:

So, Liverpool and Arsenal coverage, I’m currently lacking both. How key do you think they will be? and who will be the key FF player for those 2 teams?

With Liverpool it's too hard to say who'll be playing. Lucas is no good fantasy wise. I think after the first 4 games Skrtel will be good value. Suarez also could have a good season. Arsenals team is also too unpredictable. If gervinho plays week in week out he looks to be good value but I wouldn't touch Arsenals defence with a barge pole.

Personally, I think Joe Allen's whereabouts a key to whether I have any 'Pool coverage AND who if anyone I plump for in the Swansea midfield.

I have RVP as will everyone rather quickly after they realise that Torres and Danny Graham is a prestty rubbish combo up front.

I'll have my 3 heavy hitters up front banging in goals whilst the great midfield mystery resolves itself.

Kagawa is a goer, imo. Hazard, however, is one! As for your front three, Rooney is fat, Aguero is at home, and RVP is up in the air ... 😀

Liverpool have poor fixtures at the start, Skrtel is a good pick for 6m once they have decent fixtures though,
Key attacking players are going to be Suarez and Borini, possibly Dempsey or Ramirez if they sign someone to play in the other forward spot.

As for Arsenal, Giroud or Podolski could be good, but we can't tell til after the season starts, in midfield im not sure any of Song, Arteta and Rosicky/Ramsey/Ox will be good FF prospects immediately, Song won't have RVP to send through balls to

Not at all. He might score decent over the course of a season, but his main offensive contributions come from the games where he partly plays offensive midfielder. And those games are usually though, and therefore you would want to stay clear from using him due to the fixtures. As a captain option he is rubbish for the same reason. The best fantasy options are those who score at predictable times in predictable games. Toure is not one of these, therefore he will never be a good option.

I have provision for Bale, if necessary, and therefore for any 9.5 midfielder.

Rafael - unless Fergie plays Carrick at the back, I think he's secure.

He's played midfield a few times in pre season already (or maybe just once), was involved a lot from an attacking perspective, makes me think he could be potential OOP player, which would be nice. Wouldn't trust the QPR defence though, however they could surprise a few people this season.

I'd get him for assists, not for clean sheets, as that is where his points (if any) will come from.

Hazard will soon depart for either Bale or VDV probably. Kagawa should play in the hole behind Rooney. Been playing very well pre-season and Fergie has talked him up. Lots of goals and assists in Germany too. 8.5? Bargain.

    RE: Cheap rotating defenders.

How many of you stuck with the ones you chose at the start of last season for longer than 10 gws?

Just wondering if this pre-emptive selection on the basis of season expectations worked out over the long haul for you before, or did you end up chopping and changing to suit actual performances (as I did).

Ditto ... but it worked out ok. I'm a fan of pulling the wildcard out sooner rather than later once the teams have revealed their tendancies after the first few GWs and then adjusting one or two at a time as required.

Krul/Vorm were in from GW4 to the end of the season for me. The defenders changed in reaction to form, fixtures, injury and later on to take advantage of a high team value.

Cheers for all the replies. Not planning to do an early WC this year unless someone rips it up from the start. Lots of different preferences but a big range of options so always unlikely to be one winner. I will probably risk Petric from the start and see if he turns out to be another boselli.

Very true. Any the only talking point of the other teams is if they have at least one player in the NBA.

Spain and to lesser extent Argentina are second best teams at the moment in the world imo. We came 3rd in last World Championship 😉

It's the work ethic that is particularly good in Spain's basketball team. If we get a bronze this year I will be over the moon!

McAnuff - anyone know anything about this player for Reading? Is he worth a punt for the DGW with strategy to transfer in GW2? Already got Pog just looking at potential 2nd Reading player

There's a pretty good scout write-up about him from a few days ago if you want to scroll back and have a looksy ... sounds ok on paper but I'd be hesitant about them until we see the rest of the line-up and probably once their insipid opening fixtures are out the way.

He's your typical winger really, produces consistently good crosses and very good dribbler. I remember him almost scoring a wonder goal v Liverpool in the FA Cup (picked the ball up on the halfway line and tore right through the defence and fired it against the bar)
