Our series of articles analysing the chief protagonists from the three promoted clubs has already brought Rickie Lambert and Jobi McAnuff under the spotlight earlier this week. Today, it’s the turn of Southampton’s wing wizard Adam Lallana who, alongside Lambert, was one of only two Saints players to feature in the npower Championship Team of the Season for 2011/12:

The Statistics

As a youngster, Lallana was a member of the Bournemouth Centre of Excellence, where his talents were spotted by a member of the Southampton Academy and, as a result, he joined the club as a 12-year-old. The midfielder was a key component of the Saints’ FA Youth Cup squads that reached the final and semi-final respectively before he stepped up to the first-team in 2006.

The first couple of seasons were a struggle for Lallana; managing just six league appearances and a single goal, he was farmed out to Bournemouth on loan for a month, where he featured three times before returning to St Mary’s. In 2008-09, however, he finally nailed down a regular role, scoring once and providing five assist in 40 appearances. The following season, however, Lallana’s attacking talents really came to the fore – 15 goals and three assists in 44 league games were indicative of his threat, while eight goals and 11 assists in 2010/11 helped the Saints win promotion from League One. Last term saw Lallana produce double figures for both goals and assists for the first time in his burgeoning career (10 and 11 respectively) as Nigel Adkins’ side sealed their return to the top-flight by finishing a point behind Reading in second place.

The Prospects

Adkins’ attack-minded 4-4-2 helped Southampton rack up 85 goals last term – the most of the three promoted clubs – and Lallana’s marauding left flank raids are bound to catch the attention of many a Fantasy manager, bearing in mind he played a part in 24% of his side’s goals in 2011/12, second only to Rickie Lambert.

Priced at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and a mere 4.9 in the Sky Sports game and with a fair share of both corners and free-kicks, the 24-year-old looks an enticing proposition, though the side’s recent formations in the pre-season friendlies may give us some cause for consternation. Adkins has trialled 4-3-2-1 and 4-3-3 systems over the Saints’ three full matches thus far and shifted Lallana into a deeper central role in the midfield three. After yesterday’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Ajax, Adkins admitted his side are likely to change tactics over the course of next season and will be less “gung-ho” in their approach in the Premier League – an indication, perhaps, that the 4-4-2 will be rolled out mainly at St Mary’s as the promoted club look to tighten up at the back on their travels.

Certainly, the Saints’ horrendous opening schedule is likely enough to deter us from initially investing in their attacking assets – with showdowns against City, United and Arsenal in the first four Gameweeks, they could barely ask for a more difficult start to their season. After that, though, the fixture list is a little kinder and could sway plenty to take a punt – home clashes against Villa and Fulham and a trip to West Ham are the type of matches their attacking approach should prosper in and if Adkins’ men are follow in the footsteps of last year’s promoted clubs and stay afloat, Lallana will surely be crucial to their cause.

        why?

Rafael at the Olympics so should start at right back, constant injuries across the back 4 and can fill most positions and may even get games in midfield

Seems the best Man u defender to pick to me

Honestly, it's difficult to predict who will start. At the moment, Smalling just had a surgery so he won't start the season. Vidic is close to ready so I'm seeing the back four as Rafael - Jones - Rio - Evra. There is no reason why Jones is not worth a spot in the squad unless anything new comes in and ruin the flow regardless for the better or worst.

Olympics aside, Rafael is nailed on for the RB when he's fully fit. Smalling is out, and although Jones may well start the first game or two he won't stay there once Rafael is available again. He was terrible there last year.

Hey, go for Jones. Hope it works out for you.

But if you ask the question and don't like the answer.. well whats the point of asking for opinions? I can't see any reason why Jones is ahead of Rafael given how he played last year.

If Rafael is so terrible why is Fabio on loan and no talk of a new RB coming in?

Fabio would be more secure if not for Evra, it made sense to send him on loan, a lack of first team chances is hindering his development. When they first came Fabio was the better of the 2, no longer as Rafa has had more first team exposure and therefore has developed quicker/better

yeah but Rafa, Rio and Vidic were all injured, we had little choice.

Truth be told I can see United eventually going 3-5-2 with the Da Silva boys as wing-backs, but that casts doubt over Valencia, Nani etc, but it's the only way short of playing Jones as CM that you could get Rafa, Fab, Smallnig, Evans and Jones into the team from the off.

You're right. You should write SAF an email and ask him why he hasn't signed a new RB as a priority and stop messing about with this Baines talk. Title being on the line and all.

Rafael will be first choice for sure, but Jones will not be left on the bench twiddling his thumbs all season, nor will Smalling when he gets fit. There will be rotation in that United defence and this means the likes of Huth/ShawX, Hangeland, Ridgwell who are all around the smae place, all nailed-on and all with attacking prospects better options AT THIS POINT

      Ivanovic - Terry - Cahill/Luiz - Cole

You definitely can't predict the form of players. So on that point I'm out. I worry if I pay them too much attention they might skew my judgement.

Comparison tool on the other hand.. beautiful. Raw but real data.

I think he will and he offers a decent threat down the right.

Fonte is not a big a goal threat as he's made out to be

He got 7 in a season, but that was in League 1, I think he got 1 or 2 last season. Hoiveld got 7 or 8, he's more of a threat. Of course he's also 0.5 more.

Anyone else think Sunderland should bid for Andy Carroll?

MON should have the money and he is looking for a big CF.

I know Carroll would prefer Newcastle, but realistically he would be their 3rd pick striker, when at Sunderland he would be guaranteed to play every game.

Caulker will not be starting for Spurs. If he goes back to Swans on the other hand.

Have you thought about Walters over McClean? I know Stoke have horrible fixtures at home first 2, but he rotates perfectly with Noble and is such a beast at home when played behind the striker and not out wide that he could frankly score v anyone. Plus he's on pens

not sure on McClean, not sure if he's been playing pre-season. Look up for a bit on Walters

Well if you need the cash, Cuellar, if not Santon. I would suggest Hangeland, but you have him, if you want a defender to rotate with QPR and Fulham, can I interest you in Emmerson Boyce?

I think I'm going santon than... I think my team is well balanced (depending on Taraabt and Noble perform)
                  Cheers for the help mate!

Caulker won't start. Keepers are too dear. You could get Santon/Cuellar for 1.0 less

Micah Richards is awesome when he bombs forward. He just builds momentum the further he goes on and becomes faster and stronger. Only Micah can stop Micah when he is in the mood. Speed of the Puma, strength of the Bear. A bit like this guy.

Torres and the DGW. For me it's the fear of missing out that has him in my team, not the belief he can score big. If I didn't have him and he knocked in a couple goals and an assist, I'd be spewing. If he doesn't I won't really care, I'll collect my 4pts (if he starts and plays 60+mins) and transfer him out ASAP....

    .....does this make sense?
