Having rolled out a Selection Guide to Goalkeepers earlier this afternoon, we now switch focus to the Members Projections for our search for the men between the sticks. While Joe Hart predictably sits out on top, we focus on value in this first Members article, examining those keepers who are expected to deliver the best points per million ratio for the season and the first six Gameweeks…

First time commenting on here, any advice on this team would be much appreciated:
    Friedel/Federici
    Rafael/Clichy/A.Cole/Cuellar/Gorkss
    Kagawa/Lampard/Bale/Noble/Britton
    Torres/Tevez/Petric

I have 2 million set aside for the obvious Torres-Rooney switch. My main dilemma is whether it's worth finding 2.5 million to get Aguero in for Tevez, possibly by putting Pienaar in for one of the pricey midfielders, but as an Everton fan I always anticipate a slow start.

I like it. I'm risking Tevez too.
Nice balance, I can't see too much wrong, apart from Rafael (competition at RB).

Yeah I was thinking that, I did have Riise in but changed it just before, mainly due to United's defensive injuries.

i had money set aside for the same move & as like you wanted to get aguero in there, i got rid or hazard & graham for taarabt (any 6m) & aguero. now thinking of going w/o rooney

I was initially going to go without Rooney, but I can just see him bagging 6 or 7 goals in that run of Fulham/Southampton/Wigan. I'm tipping Aguero for top scorer this season though, so want him in at some point.

Green + Al Habsi or Fabio + Figueroa.

Pros: Both teams with good defensive form at the end of last season, cheap and good rotation (particularly juicy from GW5-13). Likely to be overlooked by many

Cons: Not the best stats to back them up.

            Interesting.

so your going for one big hitter plus 4 rotating defenders for 2 spots. A Cole/Lescott the big hitter with Hart/Cech in net?

My back line will likely be

              Foster – Begovic
              Ivanovic – Fabio – Alcaraz – Santon – Cuellar

Not sure atm who Ivanovic will end up being.

I'm going to be totally honest and say I don't like it!

I think your keepers could really frustrate you as you've got 3 bad fixtures in the first 4 weeks. Begovic/Sorensen rotation could also really cause you problems and Foster isn't strong enough to rely on every week.

I'm also not convinced by the New/Sun rotation route since they also have 3 tricky fixtures in the first 7 weeks. I agree it will be solid over the course of the season but I'd rather have someone else than a Newcastle defender for the time being.

I also think missing out on City defence could be a huge mistake, especially given the generous pricing of Clichy and Lescott (although I agree there is the risk of rotation for the former). I also think that a United keeper for 6m is impossible to ignore!

Yeah it's not the strongest (especially at the start), but it should be great value over the course of the season.

New/Sun/WBA/Sto/QPR/Wig are all strong at home and should keep plenty of CSs.

Ivanovic will become Lescott or Rafael/Vidic within the first couple of weeks.

I think the money is much better utilised up front in attack as that's where the points are.

Perhaps a few of those will keep plenty of cleanies but I don't think they will all do well. I wouldn't count on many clean sheets then and just hope your more expensive attackers do well!

I honestly think there will be great value picks at the back this year from the likes of City, United, Chelsea, Arsenal etc. so I'm going down that route. Best of luck to you.

Until Al-Habsi came in at 5.0 I was hell bent on having him in my team paired up with Schwarzer. GW 4 aside he's an excellent rotation with Green for the first 10 wks though so I totally get your thinking!

Have Wigan signed Ramis? If so that may put Figueroa at risk and make the decision for you!

Yeah I'm not too sure about who will start for Wigan and the choice of starting 4.5m defenders will heavily influence my decision. It also depends if I go for DdG or 2 rotating keepers.

Demi said it would be Boyce as RWB, with Caldwell, Alcaraz and Figueroa as CBs and Beausejour as LWB. He also said that if they sign a new CB then they would replace Figueroa.

Yeah I know, I hadn't even considered it a viable option until just now. They could be this year's surprise defensive packages considering their form at the tail end of last season. If it doesn't work out, at least I've not wasted too much cash!

I just don't see many viable alternatives!

Recent changes regarding Mr Pienaar and Sigurdson has brought me to a new line up.

I still plan on holding back 3.5m in case I chose to upgrade Tevez or Torres to Rooney.

    DDG, Federici

    Cole, Hangeland, Rangel, Fabio, Clyne

    Noble, Taarabt, Pienaar, Hazard, Siggy/VDV

    Torres, Tevez, Graham

    3.5m bank

Thoughts on this team and the plan I have in mind?

The bank is so I can get Rooney in GW2 and to enable other upgrades as certain must have players present themselves. Its a very specific tactic I'm keen to try out.

Just had a thought regarding United's defence for the first few games. A current CB crisis could see Jones and Vidic together at CB. With Rafael also away with the Brazil squad at the Olympics he may not start at the beginning of the season. This could mean Valencia playing at RB with Young and Nani on the wings

Schwarzer/Green is nice but I'd prefer to have Hangeland as Fulham cover to add that attack threat in case.

No mention of Szczesny in the goalkeeper rotation article, and now, not in this one either. At just 5.5m, what gives? He's a much better punt than Friedal, imo, and I've found a 4.5m keeper he rotates with for some of Arsenal's trickier fixtures.

He misses out by 0.1 on the current top ten for value - he could well sneak in in a later revision. He is excellent value - no doubt and he gets a mention in the defenders article coming up tomorrow.

Ok, that makes sense, if the list was determined by points return last season divided by cost this season. I'm projecting Arsenal's defence to be a little stronger this year, so I think he could be worth it.

The defenders article will be interesting. I so would like Vermaelen in my team, but there's both Szczesny and Koscielny at the 5.5m mark, which is difficult to ignore.

Mainly down to injuries at the back and def mid last year. Injuries to Vermaelen and Mertesacker, meant neither started 30+ league games.

I've been musing over defender pairings and you can find some of my musings here. Based on the 'difficulty' rating I've assigned to teams (which in turn is based on last season's actual results and projected 'generic' results for the promoted teams), I can't see a better combination at 10m or below.

        https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AkQk4QrJ-jJ3dDQ5NDdJTzhXdVI2MnAzUXZKUTBNRmc

I'd be trusting the Arsenal defence in more away games than typical for budget keeper rotation approaches, but with Diaby back, I rate him and Song to protect Vermalen and Koscielny pretty well.

If by 'high end' you mean City, United, and Chelsea, then those keepers are 0.5-1.5m more. Szczesny is nailed on at 0.5m less than DDG (who isn't), and if Vermaelen stays fit then him and Koscielny are as good as any centre back partnership in the league. Pair that with Diaby and possibly Wilshere's return, and a team that keep possession, and I think Arsenal will keep more clean sheets this year.

At the end of the day, I'm trying to find value with my picks, and 5.5m is unquestionable value, imo.

The only downside is not wishing to double up on the Arsenal defence with Vermaelen. This is a shame as I believe he had the highest PPG value for a regular starter than any other defender.

Doesn't make many saves, read on Opta he had the lowest saves to shot % in the league. I'd rather get a combo with near perfect fixtures, and then maybe get Szczesny in if he's fallen in price and when Arsenal's defence is at full strength. Good shout though, he served me well at times last season.

Why start with Kagawa? Tricky away fixture against Everton in GW1 means you can judge if SAF trusts starting him in away games. If he does play, you can't expect big returns from that fixture, so plenty of time to judge his talent/form and take the plunge in GW2.

I like Arteta at 8.0m but fiixtures aren't the best. Podolski could surprise a few. There are mid-priced midfielders wth potential for greater returns than last year catching my eye at the minute - Cabaye, Pienaar, Taarabt, Hoilett, Ramires.

For United coverage, probably Valencia then can always 'downgrade'.

A lot of people talking about lindegard. Surely de Gea will get a lot more games this year as hes finally playing to his potential. last season he was chopped and changed but still outscored cech and reina.
Every goalkeeper who got more points last year than him played 700mins+ more than him.
I never owned him last year but this year i don't see the bargain pairs working as well as last.
I'm more worried about ferdinand starting than lindegard to affect his points total.

So.. if you get a midfield of
    9.5 Pienaar Sinclair Noble Maloney
You can play the 9.5, Sinclair(Michu if worried about olympics) and Pienaar(apart from GW 1) every week till GW 8.. Then you can rotate Noble and Maloney fixture difficulty wise.
OR is that midfield too weak? allows for Torres Aguero Rooney upfront

Clichy too risky for me, especially if Mancini plays a 3-5-2 where it's more likely Kolarov would play

Where has the idea come from that Van der Vaart will be played OOP/in the hole?

If this is the case then I'm surprised that his current ownership stands at just 4.6%

Well it's his regular position, and where he's played most of his Spurs' career. He would be in my team but there's the siggy factor, don't think AVB would play them both in most games.

Siggy will most likely play in place of Modric at home. VDV will play in the hole IMO.

You'd think Maloney is a 'must have' reading on here.... He has 1% ownership.

And Federici is on 4% ownership. Whereas Krul has 21% ownership.

They better not do. I haven't seen another team with Hangeland and Rangel in.
