West Brom boss Steve Clarke moved to boost his up front options earlier this week with the acquisition of Swedish forward Markus Rosenberg on a three-year deal. The 29-year-old arrives at the Hawthorns on a Bosman after his contract with German side Werder Bremen expired earlier this summer and will add plenty of experience to the Baggies ranks, having plied his trade in three of Europe’s main leagues over the last few years:

Rosenberg’s fitness is clearly a major issue for his manager right now ahead of the new season, though. The Swede hasn’t trained since Euro 2012 and is some way behind his team mates – with the new season just over a week away, the Baggies boss warned it may take a little longer to get the forward up to speed:

Markus works hard for the team and his energy levels are fantastic. He joins us after a seven-week break, which is not ideal, so his energy levels are not fantastic at the moment. Playing in the Premier League, no matter where you’ve been, it’s a different league. And all the players we’ve brought in will take a little bit of time to adjust. Markus will take a bit of time physically to catch up with the rest. We’ll work him as hard as we feel necessary between now and the start of the season. But, if he’s not ready then, he’ll be ready when he is.

The Statistics

Rosenberg’s career began in his native country as part of the Malmo youth set-up at the age of five. Working his way through the ranks, he made his debut for the club in 2001 but failed to establish himself as a first-team regular, scoring four goals in 40 appearances over three seasons before moving on loan to Swedish outfit Halmstads. Over the course of a single campaign, the 6 foot 1 forward demonstrated his eye for goal with 14 strikes in 26 league matches seeing him finish the season as top scorer in the division but he again struggled at his parent club in the following campaign – 12 appearances harvested four goals before Ajax came calling in 2005-06 for a fee of €5.3m.

Beginning strongly in his new surroundings, Rosenberg was particularly successful when fielded as part of a front two. His first season produced 12 goals and seven assists in 31 appearances but the purchase of Klass-Jan Huntelaar saw his shifted out to the left flank and the goals and game time subsequently dried up – with only a couple of assists in nine games in the first half of the 2006-07 season, he moved to Werder Bremen in January 2007. Over three-and-a-half seasons with the Bundesliga club, Rosenberg played 90 league games, scoring 30 times and assisting 14, before a loan spell with Spanish side Racing Santander brought nine goals and an assist from 33 matches. Returning to Bremen last season, he struck up a strong partnership with former Chelsea man Claudio Pizarro and, over the course of 33 league games, scoring 10 and assisted five of his side’s 49 goals.

Rosenberg has featured for his country at Under 21 level nine times, scoring three goals, while his step up to the senior side has harvested six goals from 33 appearances.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind this is Clarke’s first managerial job, the jury may well be out on the Baggies boss until we get a better idea of his tactics and style of play. So far in pre-season, West Brom have utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 but the latter system is far more suited to Rosenberg’s strength and aerial ability and role as a target man.

Certainly, in terms of attacking output, the midlands club can hardly do worse than last season; under Roy Hodgson they scored a mere 21 goals at home and over the course of the 2011/12 campaign, they racked up 45 goals – a tally worse than two of the relegated teams, with a reliance on defensive resilience steering them to top-flight safety. Clarke is keen to improve upon that home record in particular and revealed he plans to go on the offensive at the Hawthorns – a positive sign for Fantasy managers eyeing up the Baggies’ mid-price attacking assets.

In terms of price, Rosenberg is likely to come in around the 6.0 mark in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – the same cost as Shane Long but 1.0 less than Peter Odemwingie, due to the fact that the Nigerian notched double figures (10) last term for the second season running. With the pair coming in at 8.0 and 7.7 in the Sky Sports game respectively, Rosenberg could offer a cheaper route into the Baggies forward line when his price is released in the next few days – considering Odemwingie has been mainly used out wide by Clarke in pre-season so far, the new boy could prove a decent differential if Clarke’s attacking intentions do, indeed, come to fruition.

Rosenberg’s lack of fitness affords us a chance to keep a safe distance initially, then, and assess his side’s form under their new boss as the season gets underway. Looking at the fixture schedule, it’s fair to say Clarke hasn’t been handed the easiest of starts – with home clashes against Merseyside pair Liverpool and Everton added to trips to Spurs and Fulham, a Hawthorns showdown with promoted Reading looks the only real enticing showdown over the first six Gameweeks before their schedule begins to ease a little.

I've not done a RMT yet but would be interested to know about my (pretty generic) team:

    Jaask Given
    Cole Lescott Colloccini Cuellar Clyne
    Mata YToure Pienaar Maloney Noble
    Aguero Torres Graham

    The usual 2m saved...

With this the two keepers rotate well as do Collo and Cuellar and other positions cost amounts that are easily swappable.

    Any thoughts?

    Also, is Given really bad?

In the SS game, does it work like the Euro game?

i.e. Once you switch captains or transfer someone out during the gameweek they will lose their points or does it work like the Euro SS game worked where a captain change means both captains score points for that week and a transfer change means both players score points, assuming they both play?

Yeah, Roo playing in between the midfielders and the forward line or in-the-hole depending on the opponent, home/road.

4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1 - and for that reason I am shifting (begrudingly) Roo out for Augero (grumble, grumble).

As a red, just made the heart-breaking transfers of shipping Rooney and Kagawa. New team to start the year now looking like:

    Federici (DDG)
    Cashley Lescott Hangeland Fabio (Clyne)
    Bale Mata Taarabt (Pienaar, Noble)
    Aguero Bent Petric

Heart over head cost me too many times last year and Roo's penalty misses and deep play have really worried me over the pre-season. RVP on his way too?

Just dumped Cuellar to get the extra to move Kagawa to Bale.

Think Fabio will play in the midfield, so worth a punt. Was either Cuellar or Fabio.

Want to see the West Ham back-line settle as well with the addition of Collins. Clyne also a possibility to play in the midfield or as a wing-back.

          Fabio for risk.

          Cuellar for safety.

After my last season I can honestly say safety first.

West Ham have strong fixtures, a good manager and settled fullbacks which will play week in week out, I can see why you'd want to wait and see but that tactic works badly with the cheapo starter defenders e.g. Ryan Taylor.

          Why Bale over Sig/vdv?

Heh - safety. Bale will be proven minutes and points. Slow and steady, rather than a mix of 30 min appearance. I think VDV and Siggy will share gametime - even though I am very tempted with Siggy and his explosiveness. Might still take a punt on him.

Who is nailed on the for WH - Demel and McCartney?

    Hi everyone,
Been visiting this site for quite a while now and suddenly had the urge to sign up and ask some feedback on my team of you guys

    Mignolet - Al Habsi
    Cole - Lescott - Hughes - Tierney - Gorkss
Kagawa - Cazorla - Lampard - Park - El Ghannassy
    Petric - Aguero - Tevez

probably won't be my definite team as it is too much fun tinkering with it but what do you guys think of it at the moment?
    Thanks!

Risky! But that's not to say it won't do well!

A lot of your front 8 depends on how players hit the ground running, or if they get enough playing time. But if they play, and play well ...

+ 1. Plenty of risks in there.

I personally wouldn't go Aguero AND Tevez, just one for me.

Cazorla won't start great and mightn't hit form at all until next season imo.

Understand your feelings with regards to El ghannasy but i'm a bit familiar with him (i'm belgian) so i know what he can do. I thought, since he takes the filler spot in my midfield, to take a gamble on him, you never know he adapts well in the league 😉

Firstly, never have two strikers from the same team in FF, ship Tevez out, Bent is a good replacement considering you have 0 Villa cover and their new manager loves to attack.

Al Habsi is overpriced now, get rid for a 4.5 keeper. The same for Mignolet, you can get Cuellar for 4.5 so do that in your defence if you want a cheap way in to MON's D.

Midfield looks strong, I don't see Park doing anything though, Nolan has better fixtures and a proven record.

      Defence is fine.

I would change both keepers and the whole midfield - too much risk.

Cazorla and Kagawa will take time to settle so I am taking a 'wait and see' there. Lamps is in the double pivot or on the bench.

Wouldn't double of City strikers either - too many other good options. Hughes is also a risk not to start and had a poor season last time around.

I cannot understand how Chelsea could let Lukaku go on loan. They are already mega short on strikers. Torres cant play every game even if fit and Sturridge is even poorer as a striker than he is out wide. They must be close to signing a big name striker IMO.

Wouldnt suprise me if not long after the Olympic final Hulk is signed.

Are you actually being serious. Sturridge is average at best out wide and SHOCKING as a lone centre forward. If he was as good a player as he thinks he is then he would be amazing, but the fact is he isn't.

Selfish (in the wrong way), poor passer and completely one footed. The only time he uses his right foot, is to steady his body while shooting (from anywhere) with his left.

do you not remember those long forgotten days when drogba and torres were both playing like shit at the start of the season under avb, and sturridge was outscoring both of them combined (from out wide while drogs and torres were center forwards)? di matteo unfairly benched him for the 2nd part of the season when he was chelseas best attacker at the beginning.

granted all those criticisms you said about sturridge, he still out played torres last season at the beginning

hey everyone, I am playing a fantasy game thru citizen sports and part of their scoring is that shots on target count for 1 point each, I have a few good picks already but could anyone give me hints on lesser known players who might do well with this scoring system?

Agger will not join City now otherwise he'll be cuptied in Europe and City don't wanna raise their offer. Good news.

Downing is playing in our front 3, at 6.5, for a midfielder playing in a much more advanced role, he's one to watch.

this is not true. City are in the CL, they can register 1 player who has played in a different European competition as far as I know.

I think he wouldn't be allowed to play for City unless Liverpool got knocked out before getting to the EL groups. Someone needs to check this.

      yup I'm right

Further, as per Champions League regulation 17.18, one player per club who would normally be cup-tied can be registered and eligible to play, so long as his previous club did not field him in the same competition, meaning that this player can represent two different clubs in the Europa League and Champions League.

With Downing it is Liverpool's terrible home fixtures which put me off. I would have loved Liverpool and Stoke to have better fixtures as I would put Downing and Walters straight in (possibly Suarez as well).

Nope I'm keeping him. Dont see United getting RVP to be honest. If they do they'll have to out Berba and one of Hernandez/Welbeck which I dont see happening. It'll be the same United as last year with Kagawa rotating with Welbeck, so IMO Rooney is a must have (consistent and good captain choice)

By the looks of him yesterday, he wont be 100% fit at gw1 imo..but, its Rooney.. he will do good anyway. Tho, the Torres+2m is more tempting now for me, get Rooney in gw3 sounds like a plan.. A bit risky for me to start a season with a 12m player out of form...
No worries tho, he will get there soon enough and score his 25+ goals this season anyway 🙂

RMT please guys, changed like 89 times!

    Fed / DDG

    Terry / Kompany / Demel / Jenkinson / Clyne

    Pienaar / Yaya / Lamps / Noble / Guthrie

    Graham / Aguero / Torres

2m left in bank for someone obvious on gw 2.

Strange. In the UEFA thing, as I am not a very frequent poster, I chose the worst league (Ligue 1) and the crappest sounding team (Nancy!) to try and ensure I got in. But, I actually got Serie A and quite a cool sounding team, Atalanta. Reminds me of Speedball on the Atari ST where it had a team called something like that.

Serie A looks pretty tough, but I reckon I am in with a chance.

How does it all work by the way?
