West Brom boss Steve Clarke moved to boost his up front options earlier this week with the acquisition of Swedish forward Markus Rosenberg on a three-year deal. The 29-year-old arrives at the Hawthorns on a Bosman after his contract with German side Werder Bremen expired earlier this summer and will add plenty of experience to the Baggies ranks, having plied his trade in three of Europe’s main leagues over the last few years:

Rosenberg’s fitness is clearly a major issue for his manager right now ahead of the new season, though. The Swede hasn’t trained since Euro 2012 and is some way behind his team mates – with the new season just over a week away, the Baggies boss warned it may take a little longer to get the forward up to speed:

Markus works hard for the team and his energy levels are fantastic. He joins us after a seven-week break, which is not ideal, so his energy levels are not fantastic at the moment. Playing in the Premier League, no matter where you’ve been, it’s a different league. And all the players we’ve brought in will take a little bit of time to adjust. Markus will take a bit of time physically to catch up with the rest. We’ll work him as hard as we feel necessary between now and the start of the season. But, if he’s not ready then, he’ll be ready when he is.

The Statistics

Rosenberg’s career began in his native country as part of the Malmo youth set-up at the age of five. Working his way through the ranks, he made his debut for the club in 2001 but failed to establish himself as a first-team regular, scoring four goals in 40 appearances over three seasons before moving on loan to Swedish outfit Halmstads. Over the course of a single campaign, the 6 foot 1 forward demonstrated his eye for goal with 14 strikes in 26 league matches seeing him finish the season as top scorer in the division but he again struggled at his parent club in the following campaign – 12 appearances harvested four goals before Ajax came calling in 2005-06 for a fee of €5.3m.

Beginning strongly in his new surroundings, Rosenberg was particularly successful when fielded as part of a front two. His first season produced 12 goals and seven assists in 31 appearances but the purchase of Klass-Jan Huntelaar saw his shifted out to the left flank and the goals and game time subsequently dried up – with only a couple of assists in nine games in the first half of the 2006-07 season, he moved to Werder Bremen in January 2007. Over three-and-a-half seasons with the Bundesliga club, Rosenberg played 90 league games, scoring 30 times and assisting 14, before a loan spell with Spanish side Racing Santander brought nine goals and an assist from 33 matches. Returning to Bremen last season, he struck up a strong partnership with former Chelsea man Claudio Pizarro and, over the course of 33 league games, scoring 10 and assisted five of his side’s 49 goals.

Rosenberg has featured for his country at Under 21 level nine times, scoring three goals, while his step up to the senior side has harvested six goals from 33 appearances.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind this is Clarke’s first managerial job, the jury may well be out on the Baggies boss until we get a better idea of his tactics and style of play. So far in pre-season, West Brom have utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 but the latter system is far more suited to Rosenberg’s strength and aerial ability and role as a target man.

Certainly, in terms of attacking output, the midlands club can hardly do worse than last season; under Roy Hodgson they scored a mere 21 goals at home and over the course of the 2011/12 campaign, they racked up 45 goals – a tally worse than two of the relegated teams, with a reliance on defensive resilience steering them to top-flight safety. Clarke is keen to improve upon that home record in particular and revealed he plans to go on the offensive at the Hawthorns – a positive sign for Fantasy managers eyeing up the Baggies’ mid-price attacking assets.

In terms of price, Rosenberg is likely to come in around the 6.0 mark in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – the same cost as Shane Long but 1.0 less than Peter Odemwingie, due to the fact that the Nigerian notched double figures (10) last term for the second season running. With the pair coming in at 8.0 and 7.7 in the Sky Sports game respectively, Rosenberg could offer a cheaper route into the Baggies forward line when his price is released in the next few days – considering Odemwingie has been mainly used out wide by Clarke in pre-season so far, the new boy could prove a decent differential if Clarke’s attacking intentions do, indeed, come to fruition.

Rosenberg’s lack of fitness affords us a chance to keep a safe distance initially, then, and assess his side’s form under their new boss as the season gets underway. Looking at the fixture schedule, it’s fair to say Clarke hasn’t been handed the easiest of starts – with home clashes against Merseyside pair Liverpool and Everton added to trips to Spurs and Fulham, a Hawthorns showdown with promoted Reading looks the only real enticing showdown over the first six Gameweeks before their schedule begins to ease a little.

How's my team with 3 big forwards...

    Schwarzer-Federici
    Cole-Williams-Barnett-Fonte-McCartney
    Hazard-Yaya-Dyer-Noble-Allen
    Rooney-Torres-Aguero

3 big forwards should logically make me similar points that a strong midfield would have got me...

If Torres doesnt score a minimum of 3 goals in GW1 (2 games), I will downgrade him and upgrade Allen/Dyer to Bale...

Guess there are Sandro (yes, from the olympics just around the corner) and/or Livermore. Lack of Modric might affect Bale, which makes Siggy and vdV a bit more appealing.

Well, I haven't got the stats handy. But for what I recalled, Modric's few assists were for Bale, and they seemed to link up well down the left (when Bale restricts his license to roam himself)

Good question; my guess would be he's the least comfortable with dropping back deep for the ball to start a build-up (outside of his 'push it into space and go' exploits); but the most comfortable with dropping back deep to cover/mark (from his beginnings at defensive wing).

I'm not saying that he will be out-and-out 'chosen' to be that position guy, just that, none of them will have that ball winning engine (of Modric) that used to come way back and nick the ball off Parker and never end up actually being the box to box guy he supposedly was (outside of nibbles outside the box/final 1/3) because he was the "guy that assisted the assister". This I think when look at the three would effect Bale more negatively...unless I'm wrong and he by some miracle has regained the offensive/technical use of his right foot.

They may actually be better off; as good as he is in other departments, passing was not his strong ones. I know he's the people's choice, but he is the backwards pass king (among others like: Ramsey and Hernandez. Sandro can step right in, he's gotten an incredibly nice amount of minutes on a really good team.

I don't think so. it's a hard choice in my opinion though. it comes down to do you want the "hustle guy"- , that is as right as rain you know what he's gonna do, save that finishing pass in the final third by the skin of his toe"or the "technical/natural talent" guy that you know can actually turn and face defenders, and pick out teammates consistent enough; instead of spraying a million back passes, unable to take on bottom 10 defenders without shocking errors.

I'd be tempted to put Cazorla in for either Lampard and Mata to give you a bit more coverage. I can't imagine this is a strategy you will adopt all season but it looks okay to start with.

I'd do Mata >>> Cazorla, Valencia>>>Kagawa and then use that money to upgrade a defecne a little bit more.

I'm assuming the 6 big hitters isn't a strategy that you'll be using all season long? I plan on 5 to start with and then 4/5 once I use my WC early on so I can make room for Pienaar, Graham, Petric, McClean etc.

Don't much like Papiss for price and fixtures. Reckon Darrent Bent is a far better shout an £1m cheaper.
Midfield looks very iffy / flimsy. You must have something in the bank surely.

Of your 5 mids none seem definitely reliable.
Lampard isn't getting any younger so there's no guarantee he'll play both of the double.
Pienaar is a very flaky, he seems to come in and out of the season formwise.
Taraabt had a dreadful start to last season, which could very well have something to do with Ramadan.
          Carzola is anyone's guess.
Maloney i'm not even sure, is he guaranteed his starts?

Lampard and Pienaar are strong picks fro the start of the season. Lamps playing well and likely to be picked for both games and Pienaar showing the same form he showed end of last season. Taraabt has been on form recently.
Agree on Car and Maloney but I'd say that wasn't a bad midfield at all. Good team.

Not playing Fabio - SWA(h)? I see no point in having him then. Switch to Cuellar or someone at 4-4.5M that you can rotate home and away with.

Jaaskelainen/Federici, I don't see it. Home games week 1, away games week 2...

fabio at 4.5 is easy bench option and upscaling price if he performs too potential

3 defenders are pretty much set for 1st 6 games due to nice fixtures of spurs/utd/fulham (a bit of rotation with clark from villa)

i dont like my gk's either but i cant spend more than 9, im a steadfast cheap keeper team!

He done a great job at Porto, didn't get enough time at Chelsea given he was trying to change the way they played as opposed to carrying on in the same vein as most managers do. I don't mind being in La Liga. I just thought he might want to get out of the DZ. I know quite a few of the people in La Liga so no issues there. It should provide quite a challenge for me. Anyway I should be off as it's almost 2:30 here and I have uni tomorrow.

Anyone else see the Taylor fight? Got the rub of the green off the judges in the final round as I was sure that the Russian had edged it. We'll take it though!!!!!

Chelsea reducing their Forward options. Smart.

He could be a decent prospect if he goes to a side like Sunderland though.

Hmm... I don't know why but I can totally see him fit in at Spurs. Perfect Adebayor replacement.

Ja, i thought the same but I can't see Chelsea loaning him to a such a big rival. Especially one that could finish above them if things go their way.

But his performanace (at least in the EPL world) is still uncertain, depends on whether Dempsey moves

    Evening All,
After a year of silently trawling this site for tips and ideas I have decided to sign and make my presence known... For what it will be worth!
I submitted a team a week ago that I was happy with and couldnt see any room for improvement, as the season nears I have grown less and less confident!
I'm seeing Tevez crop up more and more, how is he performing in pre-season? I haven't been paying close attention but Aguero seems to be getting the goals and plaudits?
I won't bore you with my team just yet as it is the same or very similar to 90% of the teams being posted already!
    Phil

Considering Bale is a guarenteed starter in an attacking team, established in the PL and at his club after having his best season in terms of FPL is 9.5m and Santi Carzola who is completely new to the PL, at a new club in a foreign country so by no means certain to start and with a far from prolific goalscoring record has been put down at just .5m less i must voice my disdain at FPL! 8-8.5 would have been a fair price

Cazorla is a definite starter. Maybe he'll take a while to gel with the team, but there's no chance Wenger's spending that much money for a squad player. Besides, he's brilliant. WHERE he'll play is the real question.

I do think he'll start and do well but i still think 9m is a bit unfair considering Kagawa is 8.5 in an (unfortunately) more successful team. Hope he plays behind the striker although his stats suggest he scores more when playing out wide

    Opinions?

    Friedel Federici
    Lescott Hangeland Demel Fox Cuellar
    Bale Hazard McClean Britton Taarabt
    Torres Aguero Lambert

2M in bank for Torres to Rooney when convenient.
I'm debating starting with Ashley Cole instead of Lescott and trading back to lescott gw2 and torres to rooney gw3. Thoughts on team or this?
