With two days until the season kick-off, Robin Van Persie’s future appears to have been decided with the announcement that Arsenal have agreed terms with Manchester United.

The official statement arrived this evening from Arsenal and United have also offered confirmation of the move, subject to a medical.

This is obviously momentous news on the eve of the Premier League and Fantasy season. Undoubtedly the biggest move of the summer transfer window so far, the Dutchman’s move to Old Trafford is – from a Fantasy perspective – arguably the most significant transfer since Cristiano Ronaldo left the Old Trafford club for Real Madrid in 2009:

Sir Alex Ferguson’s acquisition of the former Gunners skipper hands United a lethal looking frontline as they look to wrestle the title back from neighbours City. The two top scoring players in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in 2011/12, Van Persie and Rooney – with 269 and 230 points respectively – will surely rack up goals aplenty but, with either of the two more than capable of accruing huge points hauls to the other’s detriment in any given Gameweek, we are left with an unwanted armband dilemma as the Fantasy landscape around us is altered irrevocably.

Quite how Van Persie will fit into the pecking order in terms of set-pieces and spot-kicks is a crucial factor which will be keenly anticipated by Fantasy managers – if Rooney continues as the number one for penalties, the Dutchman’s stock will clearly drop in our estimations, with a tussle for bonus also a significant factor is how we invest in the United frontline. The Fantasy popularity of new boy Shinji Kagawa perhaps now looks a little less appealing until a clearer picture of the situation at Old Trafford, in terms of tactics and the likelihood of rotation, is established.

Over at the Emirates, Van Persie’s departure is surely set to boost the long-term appeal of new signings Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud. The Gunners’ French-based scout Gilles Grimandi admitted only last month that Giroud was signed from Montpellier in anticipation of Van Persie leaving – a central role looks likely for the Frenchman, then, but with Wenger conceding his summer signings will be eased into action in the season ahead, their initial impact is perhaps questionable. Despite this, it seems Podolski, at least, is set to start against Sunderland on Saturday as the Gunners gear up for action without their former skipper.

Fellow new-boy Santi Cazorla, though, now looks the most likely Gunner to benefit in terms of set-pieces; potentially, he should be handed corners and free-kicks, while the issue of spot-kicks looks up for grabs – Podolski scored from the spot on Sunday, though it’s worth noting that Mikel Arteta didn’t feature in the 4-0 win over Cologne.

We’ll have more on the full impact of the Van Persie move and its knock-on effects for both sides in a more substantial Moving Target later.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

just the man. Is Fox definitely the better option over Clyne or Fonte? Have Clyne and Fabio atm, but no spare cash, so if I get Fox i have to replace Fabio with a 4 million boy. Thinking Stevens at Villa

Do not get fox, he will be seriously under threat from Luke shaw, only 17 but already turned down a 4m offer from chelsea for him last year allegedly and he has had a very good pre season, not saying fox won't start but he is a little suspect defensively and i think at some stage adkins may take the plunge with shaw. Get clyne or no one.

Do u think stevens is nailed on, I was considering him myself.

Have to look at it from a point scoring point of view though. Set pieces do yield a lot of goals. Each to their own. Cant see us rushing Shaw. Blooding players in the PL is a far cry from pre season

Hooiveld will do better in BP terms. Cat amongst the pigeons!

It is a tough one. I may be forced to go Clyne as I won't be using him much. All 4 of the defence have good attributes. That's where the beauty of the game lies I'm afraid. They will all get some attacking points

It's very hard. Fox delivers a great cross as he showed tonight. But from what I have seen of Clyne, he gets further upfield and seems like the sort of defender who isn't afraid to shoot (very much in the Clichy mould).

But given our opening fixtures, if you are going to actually use a saints player in your starting 11 I would go Fox. He takes majority of free kicks and corners which gives him the edge. Set pieces will be vital for us against the big boys.

        Help?

Fonte is a better option of the 3, he was very unlucky last season not to get more goals and the season before last was a goal machine. He will be chipping in with more this season and at 4.0 will be hard to beat for value in the saints defence. Fox is decent but more expensive so not worth it in my opinion as you won't be starting him often enough. My advice would be to start with Fonte, see how first 4 games pan out (given their opening fixtures) then upgrade to Fox if you feel it necessary.

100% agree that Fonte was unlucky with a few headers etc last season.

The extra .5 for Fox may put you off but he made a fair few assists last season.

Yeh I agree totally, Fox is a good shout, and definitely a differential worth getting but I would say to conclude that perhaps only get Fox if you intend on playing him every week (bar the really horrible fixtures), if you want a bench warmer to play when fixtures are kinder then Fonte is your man in my opinion.

            Fair point?

Fonte was arguably our best player 2 seasons ago but last season was very error prone plus we have to sign another centee back before the window closes we only have 3 and one of those hasn't played for 9months. Fonte will be under threat from whoever we do sign, jos is nailed on and I'd predict clyne will be given pre season form. Fonte from an fpl viewpoint probably won't prodauce, clyne is a lot more attacking and like I say even though he isn't right now by the end of the month fonts will surely have some competition for his place.

Yeh Stevens has played virtually all their preseason but seen him in very few teams. With their easyish start I may be tempted to take a punt.

I think you are being a little harsh on Fonte, last season he was usually a rock and when errors were made rarely were they directly his fault. If Jossy was 4.0 then our problem would be solved as he is a machine but given the uncertainty over Clyne and competition for places, I still would rather Fox or Fonte. Yes we may well sign a 3rd centre back but looking at our current signings and the club ethos I'd put my money on it being a young player who Adkins will blood in the cup to come in maybe around January and be ready to step up should one of our CBs get an injury. So by that logic Fonte would still be nailed on.... Interesting debate and not really any right or wrong answers, but I will be sticking with Fonte for first 4 weeks. 🙂

COYR indeed, whichever b****ard at the FA was playing with the buttons on the fixture computer that day deserves a kick in the nuts..

Saints defence aside, I'm interested to hear your opinions on who will start this season (front 8) and fantasy prospects for GW5 and onwards (or to an extent GW2 and 3). I'm tempted by a switch to Lambo GW2 depending on what happens with the big guns in GW1, or Michu to Lallana or something along that vein... what about you guys?

Lallana has looked very sharp preseason, rikkie not so much so far but I still trust he will get 15 goals this season. It really depends on our formation, I can't believe im saying this but luncheon has looked pretty good preseason and if nailed on wide right of a front 3 could be a massive bargain at 4.5m till he has the inevitable row with n.c and n.a again.

I'd have to change Ramires after GW1 to make the requisite money available anyway, so it feels like a bit of a waste starting with him, and would put me a week/4 points behind.

I actually think Ruddy is a good pick. He'll get lots of saves, and probably a few more CSs this year.

As a neutral the Rvp transfer is very interesting
ManU would almost definitely finished above Arsenal in the league before, but now I'm not so sure?

I foresee major player problems with rotation, obviously Rvp hasn't come to warm the bench, and Rooney can't either. Welbeck just got a shiny new contract, so where does Chiccha fit in
Berba and Macheda will definitely go, on loan or permanent

However this could be a great season with 4 or 5 battling until the death

From a FF perspective though, ManU attack is a lottery, along with the Chelsea midfield and City defence

Mid table teams all the way for me. 🙂
