Liverpool made their third signing of the summer transfer window late last week, signing up Oussama Assaidi from Dutch side SC Heerenveen on a long-term contract. The 24-year old arrives at Anfield for a fee in the region of £3m and follows Fabio Borini and Joe Allen to the club as Brendan Rodgers continues his first-team restructuring for the season ahead:

The move for Assaidi was something of a surprise – Liverpool have been linked with a substantial number of players since Rodgers’ installation but the Moroccan’s name was never amongst the potential targets mentioned. He spoke of his delight at joining up on Merseyside upon completion of a medical:

I’m very happy to play for this big club. The first time I spoke to the coach I had a good feeling. I had offers from other big clubs but I’ve been waiting for this moment. The coach gave me a good feeling. It will be a dream to play with these big players and I hope training will help me to be a good player here. When I watch Liverpool it’s always a good atmosphere, the fans are fantastic and I’m happy to be here.

The Statistics

A product of the AZ Alkmaar youth academy, Assaidi’s career has so far been restricted to Holland. He made his debut in the Dutch top division with FC Omniworld back in the 2006-07 season and over the course of his two campaigns at the club, found the net on only three occasions. As a result, he was shipped off to De Graafschap but failed to fire in his first term, with 12 appearances harvesting a single goal as his side were relegated from the Eredivisie.

Assaidi started the 2009-10 campaign with five goals in as many games and resultantly earned himself a transfer back into Holland’s top-flight, when SC Heerenveen snapped him up just prior to the closure of the summer transfer window. Once again, his initial impact in his new surroundings was minimal – the Moroccan managed a single goal and three assists from 20 appearances but the appointment of Ron Jans to the Heerenveen hot seat ahead of the following campaign proved to be the turning point.

Over the past two seasons Assaidi has returned 19 goals and 20 assists in 58 games for the Dutch side, with three goals and three assists in a 6-2 win over FC Twente the particular highlight of his flourishing career. To date, he has represented his country on 22 occasions and found the net once.

The Prospects

Assaidi’s arrival will undoubtedly boost Liverpool’s current options on the flanks. His speed and directness in possession, allied with superb dribbling ability and an eye for goal will surely place considerable doubt over Stewart Downing’s game time for the Reds. Bearing in mind the former Villa man failed to produce any attacking returns whatsoever last season, it’s fair to assume Rodgers has been looking for a more potent wide man in front of goal. The Fantasy potential of the new boy, however, now hinges on the club’s remaining signings over the summer period – if the mooted move for Clint Dempsey comes to fruition, it’s likely Assaidi will struggle for any sort of investment

The Moroccan’s preferred position is on the left as an inverted winger, drifting inside onto his favoured right foot, but is capable of playing on either side of a lone forward in Rodgers’ 4-3-3. We could well see him swapping flanks with Fabio Borini or maybe even see the Italian on the right – Rodgers’ tactics at Swansea was based around a natural right winger, Nathan Dyer, and the right-footed Scott Sinclair on the opposite side.

As to how quickly the new boy will settle – that’s another matter. Rodgers lavished praise on the Moroccan upon his arrival but also took time to suggest Assaidi’s introduction to the Premier League could very well be a gradual one:

We’re delighted with the signing, he’s a young player who has done very well, in particular in the last couple of seasons, in Holland. He fits our style perfectly, he’s an exciting player who is very good in one versus one situations and I think he’s a player that will excite the crowd. We’re not expecting too much too early, he needs time to adapt but we’re delighted he’s chosen to come here over a number of other clubs. As I said, I’ll look forward to helping his development and I hope he’ll become a very good part of this club.

In a sense, it’s an ideal situation for Fantasy managers if Rodgers affords Assaidi sub roles while he gets used to his new surroundings. Despite the fact they have three home games in the next four, Liverpool’s upcoming schedule is hardly enticing – City, Arsenal and United all roll up to Anfield in the next four Gameweeks and with a trip to Sunderland also on the horizon, we’ll be quite happy to allow the new boy time to settle before the Reds have (nor, STO, RDG) from Gameweek 6-8.

Although he’s likely to play the same role as Borini, the new boy has been listed as a midfielder in FPL and the Sky Sports game – coming in at 6.5 and 4.8 respectively, he’s a potential budget-friendly option, then. If he can come close to replicating his Heerenveen form and nails down a regular role, Assaidi is likely to find plenty interest, though with nine days still left of the transfer window the cheque-book is expected to be wielded by Liverpool once again. Only then can we assess his chances with a greater degree of certainty.

That's pretty much the same scenario as me with Ivanovic. It just made the most sense as Chelsea seemed far more likely to keep a CS or even 2 CS'es than Torres did to score. In the end I went with Torres purely to cover everyone else doing it on the slim off-chance he did explode.

I don't really regret it too much as I haven't had an absolutely terrible week, just an average one. That's easy to take whereas I would have been so annoyed if it had been the same scenario as last year where Rooney/Aguero exploded and against my better judgment I took neither.

So many people were burnt by Torres by last season I was surprised at the love he got. I'd be as happy as anyone if he got back to LFC form but I just don't think he will!

A bit surprised too that he got THAT much love. Virtually everybody on here captained him. I expected him to be very popular still, but perhaps that the City attackers and Chelsea mids to be more popular captain picks.

I think part of the problem was also the uncertainty in the Chelsea midfield. It was hard to captain a Chelsea mid whilst not knowing what sort of minutes they would play. I think if we knew 100% who was nailed on for 160-180 mins then more would have plumped for them.

Is Vetonghen going to play...Id maybe swap him for someone else. Or upgrade Britton to Dyer, Michu or Routledge...Then play 3-4-3

Not convinced that Tottenham will keep a clean sheet anyhow. Plus 6.5 for VER seems expensive.

Which of these tickles your tastebuds for my attack...

    1. One City/Chels mid and striker plus Rooney/RVP for Utd

    Hazard Nasri Nolan Pienaar
    Torres Tevez Rooney/RVP

Can do this in three steps, Lamps>Nasri GW3, then Siggy>Hazard and Rooney>RVP GW4/5 if required.

    2. Double City striker/double Chels mid

    Hazard Lampard Nolan Pienaar
    Aguero Tevez Rooney

    Only two transfers required.

    3. Balanced 3-5-2 one attacker from each of likely top five

    Hazard/Lampard Cazorla Siggy Nolan Pienaar
    Tevez/Aguero Rooney/RVP

    Two/four transfers required.

    4. Finally! Balanced 3-4-3 one attacker from each of likely top five

    Cazorla Siggy Nolan Pienaar
    Torres Tevez Rooney

One transfer next week Lamps>Cazorla and done!

2.5m in bank to upgrade elsewhere, i.e. Fabio>Baines/Verm?

If Torres performs I'm favouring option 4 and benching for one week for ease of implementing and for covering next week's fixtures.

    What say you?

Hard to follow, but here goes.

Option 2 is a no go ,2 city strikers is not worth it, and with Aguero out for a month now probably, it makes your idea redundant.

Option 3 interesting - who is your striker on the bench. seeing as the cheapest (starting) striker is 5m, why not use another 1m and get graham?

Options 1 and 4 are basically Hazard Nasri or Cazorla Siggy. Personally, I prefer Mata as chelsea coverage (over torres and hazard), and I like cazorla. Soggy is roatation risk, and I think nasri is too (maybe he will get 28 starts) and he is hot and cold. when silva gets going nasri will be in the shadow.

Of the 4, I think I would go with none of them. I currently have
      Mata Bale Pienaar Noble
Tevez Torres (to RVP/Roo soon) Graham

        Cheers for looking.

Re option 3 bench striker will be 5.0m Reading cheapie, prefer Le Fondre.

Think I will do Lamps>Cazorla next week and take from there. Really like him and worthwhile having an Arse player I think, and he has to be the man. Otherwise I will have to play Clyne and Fabio which is too much to bear! Then monitor Torres situation.

        Cheers. Head clearer now! 🙂

Guys, here is my theory on RVP joining United :

Looking at United's team, I really don't think SAF needed this headache with already good strikers (Rooney, Chicharito, Wellbeck) and good midfield (Nani, Young, Valencia, and now Kagawa). Now he will struggle to pitch 11 players without upsetting another 5 each week.

However, I think he preferred to sign RVP, despite the above, so RVP wouldn't go to City which would have strengthened them.

    What do you think ?

he said it himself, the main reason was to stop rvp from scoring against utd. They will have the drogba/torres problem. In time and practice they could be awesome together but you can't give them the time together in the league because there's too much at stake. Should have given them both a pre season together imo

The comments I read by him were that he wanted to emulate the success of the 1999 squad. That relied on four strikers often of Cole and Yorke...with Sheringham and Solskar coming on.

That campaign was probably the finest ever by an English club.

I see him playing RVP and Rooney as first choice, with Welbeck and Chico as impact subs or first choice when fixtures pile up and Euro games come.

Having too many good players is a headache ever manager would love.

Creates competition as well. If Rooney performs badly then he knows that Chico or Welbeck is ready to come in.

In conclusion SAF wants RVP because he's a great striker and he wants to win everything.

        Here's SAF's comments:

"They (Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie) are two fantastic players and it will be great to have both of them," said Ferguson.

"It gives us more strength and more combinations up front.

"In 1999 I had Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the four best strikers in Europe.

"We are going towards that now with Javier Hernandez, Wayne Rooney, Robin, Danny Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa.

"It is a fantastic collection of players and hopefully I pick the right combinations

"It is great to have a player of Robin van Persie's qualities to come into the squad. I am very pleased."

United are in 4 competitions in which they SHOULD go a long way, everyone will get games. There will be injuries, good cover is required. Sure some players have gone a fair way down the pecking order now (Chicharito) but they'll feature for one of the biggest clubs in the world and the money they're on should appease them to a certain degree. Certain members of the squad are also ageing and a lot can change with regards to starting places in a season or two.

I have Torres and Cashley in my team and have already made my FT this week.

Assuming Torres scores tonight (not that I should EVER assume that) I guess I'll be best getting rid of Cashley for GW3 and leaving Torres on the bench? I'm hoping Torres won't drop in value as they have QPR and Stoke as the next 2 fixtures.

Question is....who to get in for Cashley in GW3?? Tricky looking at fixtures.

    Suggestions?

Yeah I remember your issues with Fletcher last season. Potentially far better service at Sunderland in McClean, Sess and Larsson though.

I agree...far better side. Also he was ok the first half of the season, I just mistimed getting him....he peaked and plummeted so fast, all within a month and other transfers took priority. Next time that happens I'll ditch far quicker.

Well, I think the best option either way is to go with Larsson if Fletcher signs.. 😀

Would you like to see Berba playing in a different premier league team and which? Still believe in him scoring goals?

Could be nice to see what he'd do with the amount of skill there, Mata, Hazard etc.

absolutely - if he had 2000 min last year, he would have had 200 pts haha...

of course, he scores goals 3 and 4 at a time
