Sunderland’s 23-year-old Irish winger James McClean proved to be one of the revelations of the 2011/12 season. After impressing new Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill  during training last December, this bench warmer was swiftly promoted from the reserves to the first-team. He made his first start for the Black Cats in their 1-0 victory over Manchester City on New Year’s Day and just two days later scored his first senior goal as Sunderland thrashed Wigan 4-1. It was to be the first of five goals over the second half of the season that saw the winger assist a further three and register 101 pts.

Already this year McClean has hit the ground running, earning maximum bonus during Sunderland’s opening game away to Arsenal with an EA Sports Index PPI of 14 indicative of his suitability to the scoring system. This suggests his style of fearless, attacking wing play will rack up far more bonus points over the season and replicate or perhaps surpass last term’s bonus haul of 18, bearing in mind that was accrued over just 20 starts.

After starting the previous campaign at just 4.5m in FPL, the winger has been priced higher at 6.5, while the Sky Sports game have handed him a price tag of 5.9m. This still represents something of a bargain for a player that is clearly earmarked for regular starts by O’Neill this season and as a result has earned a deserved place on our watchlist. O’Neill said:

“The fantastic thing about him is his capacity for hard work. I could play full-back behind him.”

In addition the Sunderland manager has indicated he plans to shift McClean from his usual left wing role to the right to help him develop as a player. O’Neill added:

“I genuinely don’t think it’s tough for him to learn to play on the right. He’s capable of cutting inside on people and showing that type of spark. I’ve tried him on the right-hand side where I think he can play pretty adeptly. And we’ll continue to try to shift him around and see how he does. The best way for him to learn is for him to play for 10 or 15 minutes in those positions.”

Fixtures have fallen kindly for Sunderland (RDG, swa, LIV, whm, WIG, mci) and McClean looks a strong mid-price midfield option, especially at home, for the coming weeks. McClean is also an appealing differential, with just 3.4% of FPL ownership – while his midfield colleague Seb Larsson (6.5m in the FPL game but at 6.2m in the Sky Sports game) enjoys three times as many FPL owners due to his seven goals and four assists last season, it’s worth noting he played 850 more minutes than McClean, though the Swede’s spot-kick duties add to his appeal.

According to media speculation, Sunderland are among a number of Premier League clubs interested in Manchester City winger Adam Johnson ahead of the transfer deadline – it remains to be seen how he will impact on McClean’s gametime should he be signed, though given O’Neill’s level of faith, it’s unlikely he would oust the Irishman from the Black Cats first XI.

A: do nothing and save a transfer to i can make two next week to bring in bale or rooney
B: my midfield is weak for gw2 so i can do ramires to any other midf upto 7m...lennon for spurs coverage?
    C: do 2 transfers now (by taking a 4 point hit) i.e. ramires + nasri >> bale + nolan/ireland

Now that's over with…would love some help.
Decided that I’m willing to gamble on United, Spurs and Swansea for the next few weeks…

    DeGea Henderson
    Cuellar Hughes Demel Baker Clyne
    Bale Sigurdsson Michu Dyer Kacank
    Rooney Tevez RvP

Idea would be to d’grade Rooney and upgrade Baker after GW4…

      Siggy to barfa

      Mich/dyer to hazard

A tactical question here, that I am not very experienced with to be honest:

My main rival is already 30 points+ ahead of me. I am pretty sure he is going to captain Rooney for GW2. Should i captain Kagawa to (likely) offset some of the possible damage dealt if United explode, or should I captain someone like Bale - which he currently does not have - and hold my fingers crossed. I think my team is better overall. And I have DDG btw.

Don't worry too much about what your rival is doing, just do what you believe will get you the most points. The rest will take care of itself. We've only had 1 GW out of 38.

I'd go with Bale. I think the Man Utd-Fulham game will be low scoring.

Fulham normally play with a slow tempo against big teams in order to neutralize them. Although it did not work so well for them last year against Man Utd but Fulham managed to draw scoreless against Arsenal.

        fulham are a good team.
sometimes they turn up and play well (2-2 city, 0-0 arsenal, 1-1 chelsea) or they dont turn up and lose or get thrashed
their unpredictability isnt a thing to rely on, however now dempsey is not playing, whether Petrić can step up is the question

      Ridiculous prices for average players.

We got Ba, Cisse and Ben Arfa for the same price as Sunderland are getting Fletcher! 🙂

So Valencia or Kagawa for Mata? I liked Kagawa with Everton, but got a feeling Nani will be dropped and Valencia could destroy that right wing against an ageing Riise.

    Afternoon,

Have had a pretty solid start and have 4.5 in the kitty; was originally planning Torres to RVP this week, but the lack of Swansea cover is concerning me. Should I stick with my initial plans and get RVP with a view to Swans cover for GW3 or get Dyer this week(can't afford Michu and RVP) and then RVP next week?

    Team, incase anyone's wondering is:-

    Friedel/Fed
    Ivanovic/Lescott/Cuellar/Hangelaand/Demel
    Bale/Lampard/Pienaar/Noble/Maloney
    Torres/Tevez/Pog

    Cheers

I've got Nando too, but I'm not rushing to ditch him, Chelsea have decent fixs ahead. I'm also a bit concerned about Manc Utd line-up, s will watch them again, maybe twice, before doing any moves that way. Personally, not sure RvP (MU version 2.0) will be worth £13m, we'll see. I'd look at Lamps out for Michu/Dyer.

Hello, any advice welcome for gw2:

Already taken 4pt hit, not sure to leave it or....

    a) mata to bale for 4pt hit?
    b) mata to cazorla for 4 pt hit?
    c) mata to anyone for a 4 pt hit?
    d) leave mata alone and change him for bale/other next week
    e) anything else you can think of...

    Cheers
