Sunderland’s 23-year-old Irish winger James McClean proved to be one of the revelations of the 2011/12 season. After impressing new Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill  during training last December, this bench warmer was swiftly promoted from the reserves to the first-team. He made his first start for the Black Cats in their 1-0 victory over Manchester City on New Year’s Day and just two days later scored his first senior goal as Sunderland thrashed Wigan 4-1. It was to be the first of five goals over the second half of the season that saw the winger assist a further three and register 101 pts.

Already this year McClean has hit the ground running, earning maximum bonus during Sunderland’s opening game away to Arsenal with an EA Sports Index PPI of 14 indicative of his suitability to the scoring system. This suggests his style of fearless, attacking wing play will rack up far more bonus points over the season and replicate or perhaps surpass last term’s bonus haul of 18, bearing in mind that was accrued over just 20 starts.

After starting the previous campaign at just 4.5m in FPL, the winger has been priced higher at 6.5, while the Sky Sports game have handed him a price tag of 5.9m. This still represents something of a bargain for a player that is clearly earmarked for regular starts by O’Neill this season and as a result has earned a deserved place on our watchlist. O’Neill said:

“The fantastic thing about him is his capacity for hard work. I could play full-back behind him.”

In addition the Sunderland manager has indicated he plans to shift McClean from his usual left wing role to the right to help him develop as a player. O’Neill added:

“I genuinely don’t think it’s tough for him to learn to play on the right. He’s capable of cutting inside on people and showing that type of spark. I’ve tried him on the right-hand side where I think he can play pretty adeptly. And we’ll continue to try to shift him around and see how he does. The best way for him to learn is for him to play for 10 or 15 minutes in those positions.”

Fixtures have fallen kindly for Sunderland (RDG, swa, LIV, whm, WIG, mci) and McClean looks a strong mid-price midfield option, especially at home, for the coming weeks. McClean is also an appealing differential, with just 3.4% of FPL ownership – while his midfield colleague Seb Larsson (6.5m in the FPL game but at 6.2m in the Sky Sports game) enjoys three times as many FPL owners due to his seven goals and four assists last season, it’s worth noting he played 850 more minutes than McClean, though the Swede’s spot-kick duties add to his appeal.

According to media speculation, Sunderland are among a number of Premier League clubs interested in Manchester City winger Adam Johnson ahead of the transfer deadline – it remains to be seen how he will impact on McClean’s gametime should he be signed, though given O’Neill’s level of faith, it’s unlikely he would oust the Irishman from the Black Cats first XI.

How many of you guys are using your wildcard this week? Anyone had a shocker like me? I want to get some United coverage and 1 or 2 Spurs players so is it worth the risk playing my wildcard now?

Well mine is 100.5 and I have not used my WC. Surely unless you've totally screwed up your weeks of planning before GW1 when you should have put a team out covering most bases, then you should wait.

If one wants to play the markets between GW3 and 4 there are 2 weeks, longer to accumalate.

Not here to argue whether your wildcard has been wasted since you indeed earn several 0.1m from that.

But if it's me, I would wait until the time there are plenty of DGWs so that I can play 24 players in one week 🙂

What was your GW score? Even if it wasn't great your squad could score well this week and you would have just emptied them for all the players who did well this week. 1 GW tells us very little in the grand scheme of things. I would see how strong an XI you can put out this week and plan your FT's wisely over the next few GW's and you should be alright.

Stats tell only the truth. It's the assumptions that are made as a result of them which may be obscure. That stat shows Torres has previously done extremely well, which is true. The assumption is that he will continue to do that well which is yet to be seen.

Stats frequently distort the truth. Torres has not done extremely well for over 1.5 years. 1.5 years. Although it is true that he played a # of games and scored a # of goals, it is not true that he is 'that kind of striker' for nearly two years and on that team.

You're making the assumption I mentioned. The stats are not attempting to make you believe that Torres is "that kind of striker". Stats are facts. Facts are not lies because by definition they are true. It's the assumptions you make that may be distorted.

Good scoring rate considering his barren spells at Chelsea.

I remember putting a preseason spreadsheet together which showed he was the most prolific goalscorer (66 goals) in the EPL over his first 4 seasons (2007-2011).

That is more than Tevez (62), Rooney (61), Bent(59)and Drogba (54) over the same 4yr period.

This is the Torres of old though. His owners got so jammy this past gameweek.

Hmmm I tend to disagree. Barring a blatantly offside goal the Torres owners and captainers would have deservedly got two blanks. They miscalculated the risk IMO and were unfairly rewarded with a goal that shouldn't have stood.

These things happen in football and FPL though. I am bitter like, I'll admit that, but I firmly believe the wrong call (getting Torres not the offside) got rewarded in this instance.

It was a decent punt, Chelsea were always going to score and Torres was their only striker. The fact that the goal was offside doesn't take away from that logic.

So getting the lone striker, of a DGW team, playing two 'lower table teams', filled with midfield talent, is a jammy, wrong call?

We play two totally different games.

But the goal itself was shameful. Poor Reading.

Not really, he wasn't getting too much service and his runs were ineffective once Reading started sitting back. Also looked a bit sluggish with some poor touches. However I would do A) out of those 2 and wait the Torres transfer, although depends on your Manure cover.

Cheers for that. Had hoped he was unlucky not to have scored more, but if he looked poor then I'd like to get rid. Only have DDG as United cover currently. Half tempted to take a hit and do both, utter madness as it sounds.

De Gea for Mignolet, Cuellar for Lescott. Gives you 1 mil to spend elsewhere. (I know im a United fan but United are slightly stronger than City at the back, and in the short term even with a depleted defence De Gea will get loads of save points too)

This season -Petric. Michu. Hazard. Kagawa. Cazorla.

Thats 5 debutants catching everyones attention GW1.

There are alot of factors to someone settling in and starting well at a club. It's difficult to call with newbies which is why people tend to go for tried and tested for the majority and gambling on 1 or 2 new signings. Only hindsight tells us how good those 5 picks are and even then we haven't even reached GW2.

Ba had played a dozen games in the Premier League in 2010/11 and it was GW6 before he scored last season. None of this season's players have proven anything yet, there's a tendency to get carried away at this stage of the season with the next big thing. There's also a tendency to forget those players who arrive in the league with a big reputation and all the stats to back it up and then fail - Shevchenko, Rebrov, Kezman, Veron, etc.

Hindsight and a selective memory make this seem a very easy game...

          Aquilani?

All supposedly excellent players who were going to light up the Premier League in the last season or two - and that's just me going through the first few teams. I'm not suggesting noone settles quickly but quite clearly a lot don't.

Last season. All 3 proved what they needed. Michu did what he was supposed to do in 4 GW's in one. So did Petric. So did Hazard. Kagawa is an understandable doubt with the nailed-on factor working against him. Cazorla, you know he wont fail.

74 gw1. Gutted about switching from Ivan to Cashley at the last min, but hey still a decent score.

Did Torres -> RVP to give this team for gw2:

    De Gea
    Fabio Cuellar Cashley
    Bale (vc) Lampard Noble Pienaar
    RVP (c) Bent Tevez

    Federici Guthrie Demel Hangeland

Who to get in for Lampard gw3?
    A) McClean
    B) HBA
    C) Nasri/Yaya
    D) Kagawa/Valencia

Currently stuck between A & B as dont really want to double up on United for only 2 fixtures and City have deceptively tricky ties from gw4 onwards.

Fixtures do swing this GW but im sure there must be planning involved in what you've done.

A couple of well planned GW's and youre back in the game. Also, were just only done with 1 GW. For your wildcard, i reckon you would need a sample of ATLEAST 3 GW's to take full advantage.

Good points but I can see the merits of WC-ing early.

My expensive players aren't quite there & that's my worry - Aguero, Torres, Mata, VDV, Cole. Their fantasy potential for the short-term future not looking appealing.

Having said that, don't think i've got the balls to hit WC when i'm sober. 😉

Begovic. Arsenal hate going to Stoke as it is. Worse now with the new recruits yet to settle in properly.

    Guys, question for insiders;

how does the transfermarket (fpl) works when it comes to pricedrop? Lot of players are at -100% (fiso.co.uk) but didn't drop yet, why?

Price changes happen around 2am each day 🙂
Total FPL seems to be the most accurate atm

Yeah the wage bill is even more worrying and normally where future problems lie for clubs who are overambitious. Pressure will be on Hughes if they don't get some good results early on as relegation is unthinkable. I don't see that happening but you never know. They need to start gelling as a team.
