Sunderland’s 23-year-old Irish winger James McClean proved to be one of the revelations of the 2011/12 season. After impressing new Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill  during training last December, this bench warmer was swiftly promoted from the reserves to the first-team. He made his first start for the Black Cats in their 1-0 victory over Manchester City on New Year’s Day and just two days later scored his first senior goal as Sunderland thrashed Wigan 4-1. It was to be the first of five goals over the second half of the season that saw the winger assist a further three and register 101 pts.

Already this year McClean has hit the ground running, earning maximum bonus during Sunderland’s opening game away to Arsenal with an EA Sports Index PPI of 14 indicative of his suitability to the scoring system. This suggests his style of fearless, attacking wing play will rack up far more bonus points over the season and replicate or perhaps surpass last term’s bonus haul of 18, bearing in mind that was accrued over just 20 starts.

After starting the previous campaign at just 4.5m in FPL, the winger has been priced higher at 6.5, while the Sky Sports game have handed him a price tag of 5.9m. This still represents something of a bargain for a player that is clearly earmarked for regular starts by O’Neill this season and as a result has earned a deserved place on our watchlist. O’Neill said:

“The fantastic thing about him is his capacity for hard work. I could play full-back behind him.”

In addition the Sunderland manager has indicated he plans to shift McClean from his usual left wing role to the right to help him develop as a player. O’Neill added:

“I genuinely don’t think it’s tough for him to learn to play on the right. He’s capable of cutting inside on people and showing that type of spark. I’ve tried him on the right-hand side where I think he can play pretty adeptly. And we’ll continue to try to shift him around and see how he does. The best way for him to learn is for him to play for 10 or 15 minutes in those positions.”

Fixtures have fallen kindly for Sunderland (RDG, swa, LIV, whm, WIG, mci) and McClean looks a strong mid-price midfield option, especially at home, for the coming weeks. McClean is also an appealing differential, with just 3.4% of FPL ownership – while his midfield colleague Seb Larsson (6.5m in the FPL game but at 6.2m in the Sky Sports game) enjoys three times as many FPL owners due to his seven goals and four assists last season, it’s worth noting he played 850 more minutes than McClean, though the Swede’s spot-kick duties add to his appeal.

According to media speculation, Sunderland are among a number of Premier League clubs interested in Manchester City winger Adam Johnson ahead of the transfer deadline – it remains to be seen how he will impact on McClean’s gametime should he be signed, though given O’Neill’s level of faith, it’s unlikely he would oust the Irishman from the Black Cats first XI.

    A little advice please

Have already swapped Aguero for Tevez. Should I take the 4 point hit for Torres to RVP or wait a week?
    Thanks

    Guys, question for insiders;

how does the transfermarket (fpl) works when it comes to pricedrop? Lot of players are at -100% (fiso.co.uk) but didn’t drop yet, why?

Drops in price are guided by the player ownership at kickoff gw1. So not all players fall at the same rate. If 300000 people have mata and 1000 have Bertrand clearly mata needs more transfers in order to fall. Fiso never fully get to grips with this Maths equation - same deal last year players at - players at 180% and no drop. Frustrating stuff!!

Easy way to make some cash, bring in a team of price risers on day 1, hold them all the way through, bring in a real team just before deadline. That said, not worth doing unless some players go nuts the week before and look guaranteed to rise during it... Last year if memory serves, Dzeko scored 4 just before so was obvious the market would be frothy... If there aren't clear guaranteed risers, and you're broadly happy with your team, I'd save the WC for a DGW later in the season...

Hi all, hope the first GW went okay for you.... I need a little help...

My attacking core looks like this now...
    Bale - Hazard - Michu - McClean - Pienaar
    Ade - Tevez - Graham

I am thinking about bringing in Kaca so that I can upgrade to Rooney or RVP...
If i do go that route,
Do I put in Kaca for McClean or Pienaar?
    Which gets me Rooney...
Or do I keep going and replace Lescott with Zabs to get RVP?

I thought Pienaar was one of Everton's worst players against Utd. I know you shouldn't judge from 1 game, but he looked a long way from the guy that racked up points at the end of last season.

On the other hand, McClean looked like the only dangerous player for Sunderland. If they get Fletcher, McClean will benefit. I see him as being more integral to Sunderland's success than Pienaar will be to Everton's.

As much as I'm starting to hate this news as a VDV owner, you've got to admire AVB's courage for selling his team's best finisher.

You've got to wonder where the goals will come from now.

Open to selling our two best finishers if you count Defoe.

Bale, Ade, Lennon, Sigurdsson has plenty of goals in it.
Plus with Sigurdsson's set plays we should score a few more from set plays this year which we were shocking at last year.

None of them strike me as players who'd perform vs top sides. Ade has over-achieved imo & is likely to suffer from his second season syndrome.

Potentially Bale's the only game-changer. He still needs a support cast to finish off his work.

You can't rely on those 4 for a 38 game league season, cup competitions and the Europa. You mentioned the squad earlier but the younger players do not provide strength in depth. They are young players who act as squad fillers.

Don't think you'll get odds that are worth the risk tbh.

We're likely to field lots of youngsters/back up players and Atromitos are playing their full strength side.

so not worth betting newcastle win?
        odds is 2.2 btw. 2.2/1=22/10=11/5

        11/5

i made some accumulate with the newcastle win, to bump up the odds, well just a few quid, never mind

11/5's not bad actually, didn't think you'd get that much.

Personally I think we'll draw tonight and then bring them back to St James' and beat them comfortably. Tonight will be a good opportunity to give the youngsters a go and see if they can cope with high level football.

the thing we need to wary about is that bookies rely most of their stats on satistics, and they just set the odds lower on strong teams, no matter what formation they play/what their form is. Just in case

Nitin, this is what i think. Think it deserves a separate post. If Evans is fit.

    ------------------DDG------------------
    Rafael---Vidic---Evans---Evra---
    ----------Carrick---Clevs/Ando----
    ----Valencia---Rooney--Kagawa---
    ------------------RVP---------------------

Rooney & Kagawa to keep interchanging, like how United like it.
