Sunderland’s 23-year-old Irish winger James McClean proved to be one of the revelations of the 2011/12 season. After impressing new Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill  during training last December, this bench warmer was swiftly promoted from the reserves to the first-team. He made his first start for the Black Cats in their 1-0 victory over Manchester City on New Year’s Day and just two days later scored his first senior goal as Sunderland thrashed Wigan 4-1. It was to be the first of five goals over the second half of the season that saw the winger assist a further three and register 101 pts.

Already this year McClean has hit the ground running, earning maximum bonus during Sunderland’s opening game away to Arsenal with an EA Sports Index PPI of 14 indicative of his suitability to the scoring system. This suggests his style of fearless, attacking wing play will rack up far more bonus points over the season and replicate or perhaps surpass last term’s bonus haul of 18, bearing in mind that was accrued over just 20 starts.

After starting the previous campaign at just 4.5m in FPL, the winger has been priced higher at 6.5, while the Sky Sports game have handed him a price tag of 5.9m. This still represents something of a bargain for a player that is clearly earmarked for regular starts by O’Neill this season and as a result has earned a deserved place on our watchlist. O’Neill said:

“The fantastic thing about him is his capacity for hard work. I could play full-back behind him.”

In addition the Sunderland manager has indicated he plans to shift McClean from his usual left wing role to the right to help him develop as a player. O’Neill added:

“I genuinely don’t think it’s tough for him to learn to play on the right. He’s capable of cutting inside on people and showing that type of spark. I’ve tried him on the right-hand side where I think he can play pretty adeptly. And we’ll continue to try to shift him around and see how he does. The best way for him to learn is for him to play for 10 or 15 minutes in those positions.”

Fixtures have fallen kindly for Sunderland (RDG, swa, LIV, whm, WIG, mci) and McClean looks a strong mid-price midfield option, especially at home, for the coming weeks. McClean is also an appealing differential, with just 3.4% of FPL ownership – while his midfield colleague Seb Larsson (6.5m in the FPL game but at 6.2m in the Sky Sports game) enjoys three times as many FPL owners due to his seven goals and four assists last season, it’s worth noting he played 850 more minutes than McClean, though the Swede’s spot-kick duties add to his appeal.

According to media speculation, Sunderland are among a number of Premier League clubs interested in Manchester City winger Adam Johnson ahead of the transfer deadline – it remains to be seen how he will impact on McClean’s gametime should he be signed, though given O’Neill’s level of faith, it’s unlikely he would oust the Irishman from the Black Cats first XI.

I hear a lot of people saying no to 4 points hits at all costs.

personally i think an optimum strategy should include hits because there are times when fixtures dictate that a player is nailed on to outscore another by 4 points over a period of a few weeks.

So give me a show of hands...

    hits? Yay or nay?!

Given that the first GW was so high-scoring, anyone who's on 80-plus can afford to sink four points into a punt.

To answer your survey, I shy away from hits generally, but two of my biggest scoring weeks have come after eight-point hits.

Which isn't really answering your survey...

I think regardless of 80 points or 20 points I'm gw1 it shouldn't change your decision really hits though. Either you think it is worth it long term, or you don't

Agreed, but if you're sitting up near the 100-point and you think "that Vertonghen is one hell of a player, but what if he's benched again', you're more likely to risk the four points if you have a shedload of them.

Sometimes you need to spend money to make money.

Hits can often pay off, there's no doubting that, although of course they can go the other way.

Some hits are clearly safer than others, for example if it's to get a DGW player or get rid of someone without a fixture.

there is almost always too much risk involved with football to take 4 point hits... you need a pretty special circumstance to make it worth while... but then what do I know, the only hits I took last year were for the double gameweek at the end.

Torres a decent calculated risk because he is the lone striker for a DGW home to Wigan and away to Reading? Meh. Flawed logic IMO and the same flawed logic that made Zigic desireable for a TGW in years gone by. Flawed because all of this is trumped by the fact that he struggles to score even in two seemingly straight forward games.

Some other people calculated the risk and predicted that Torres would again struggle to score and that the Chelsea midfielders, maybe even the defenders, would outscore him over the two games. In many cases, this prediction was correct anyway and had Torres not got what was a very dodgy goal it would have been correct in the majority of cases.

    Conclusion: JAMMY.

Logic: Chelsea have two 2 easyish games and will score goals (true) Torres is nailed on compared to other Chelsea players (true) Chelsea will create many chances that any player could put away (true). Don't see the flaw in that logic. Sure Torres goal was offside but then so are a significant minority of goals. Part of playing the odds again.

'Did' being the operative word. You are talking in hindsight, something that the Torres selectors never had the luxury of. You make a calculated decision based on him getting the golden boot at the Euro's, being fit, leading the line as a lone striker and playing for a top 4 team against 2 inferior sides which happens to be a DGW. Granted he was far from impressive but that doesn't matter because the logic to get him paid off and despite the performances he walked away with 9 or 18 points for it. And like me if you think he won't be a great option long term, you do the logical thing and sell him. Happy days.

Offside goal agreed. He could have been set up for open goals twice. Mind you, we are still not sure whether he would have finished them off.

🙂 He has missed open nets in the past 😛

What started as a healthy debate on previous pages has became something of a contentious issue. To simplify, those that predicted Torres would struggle were correct but very unlucky IMO and those that predicted Torres would score were also correct but very lucky.

Torres owners obviously don't like being told they got lucky. Uh-oh!

I think Vorm egdes it in the back 5 for Swansea with a consistently high number of save points. Dream start for Swansea but also an unrealistic one. I think Laudrup will have them attacking more this season versus Rodgers keep ball strategy and I see less CS.
