Sunderland’s 23-year-old Irish winger James McClean proved to be one of the revelations of the 2011/12 season. After impressing new Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill  during training last December, this bench warmer was swiftly promoted from the reserves to the first-team. He made his first start for the Black Cats in their 1-0 victory over Manchester City on New Year’s Day and just two days later scored his first senior goal as Sunderland thrashed Wigan 4-1. It was to be the first of five goals over the second half of the season that saw the winger assist a further three and register 101 pts.

Already this year McClean has hit the ground running, earning maximum bonus during Sunderland’s opening game away to Arsenal with an EA Sports Index PPI of 14 indicative of his suitability to the scoring system. This suggests his style of fearless, attacking wing play will rack up far more bonus points over the season and replicate or perhaps surpass last term’s bonus haul of 18, bearing in mind that was accrued over just 20 starts.

After starting the previous campaign at just 4.5m in FPL, the winger has been priced higher at 6.5, while the Sky Sports game have handed him a price tag of 5.9m. This still represents something of a bargain for a player that is clearly earmarked for regular starts by O’Neill this season and as a result has earned a deserved place on our watchlist. O’Neill said:

“The fantastic thing about him is his capacity for hard work. I could play full-back behind him.”

In addition the Sunderland manager has indicated he plans to shift McClean from his usual left wing role to the right to help him develop as a player. O’Neill added:

“I genuinely don’t think it’s tough for him to learn to play on the right. He’s capable of cutting inside on people and showing that type of spark. I’ve tried him on the right-hand side where I think he can play pretty adeptly. And we’ll continue to try to shift him around and see how he does. The best way for him to learn is for him to play for 10 or 15 minutes in those positions.”

Fixtures have fallen kindly for Sunderland (RDG, swa, LIV, whm, WIG, mci) and McClean looks a strong mid-price midfield option, especially at home, for the coming weeks. McClean is also an appealing differential, with just 3.4% of FPL ownership – while his midfield colleague Seb Larsson (6.5m in the FPL game but at 6.2m in the Sky Sports game) enjoys three times as many FPL owners due to his seven goals and four assists last season, it’s worth noting he played 850 more minutes than McClean, though the Swede’s spot-kick duties add to his appeal.

According to media speculation, Sunderland are among a number of Premier League clubs interested in Manchester City winger Adam Johnson ahead of the transfer deadline – it remains to be seen how he will impact on McClean’s gametime should he be signed, though given O’Neill’s level of faith, it’s unlikely he would oust the Irishman from the Black Cats first XI.

Graham's strike rate including his pre-season games has been fantastic. I wouldn't be worried at all about the whole "They scored 5 goals and he wasn't involved in any!?!" argument, as QPR's defense was absolute rubbish. Against a "normal" defensive line, maybe Swansea wins that game 2-0, and its just a game that Graham didn't score in.

So VdV looks set to fall tonight. Wanted to wait a week to sell him for McClean and use 2 Fts next week.

Now I might have to take a hot and do VdV and Torres to McClean and Ade.

yeah, maybe you're right. I'll think on it for a couple of hours. I was hoping to get away with it. He was 98% for a fall a couple of hours ago on FISO, now he's on 103%. Sunderland at home to Reading, McClean gets forward, is always a goal threat, takes the odd set-piece and is a BP magnet

OK guys, need some help and suggestions.

I have 3 chelsea dudes and one of them obviously has to go.

Cole - Hangeland - Clyne - Fabio - Assou Ekotto
Bale - Mata - Yaya Toure - Allen - Noble
    Torres - Graham - Tevez

I'm actually thinking of throwing Mata away and getting Lennon. Tottenham has relatively easy games. Or maybe switch Cole to another Tottenham defender?

I know it's just one game and Everton is relatively good team, but I dont have too much faith in Man United crushing. Easy road for them too though. Mata to Nani or Valencia Maybe? Or go with Man Utd defenders? Hard decision, and I kinda feel like flipping a coin at this point. I do have De Gea so having defender might pay off decently well, or then suck in case they wont manage to keep clean sheets.

Someone, tell me something wise, mmkay?

i've got some predictions for the up coming week 🙂
West Ham to beat Swansea (hopefully Michu to be silenced....)
Liverpool to get at least a draw with Man City
those two i will be betting on
newcaslte vs chelsea 3< goals scored (Torres to play well, Hazard to be exposed for his sieving of possession at least once)
Diame to play very well perhaps receiving a BP for his efforts
United to punish Fulham......(although i hope fulham get up and stick it to the big boys!)

Cannot see W Ham beating Swansea. Swansea are a very good team, A Villa look very poor.

However, you really cannot tell much after one game really. Villa could end up being good under Lambert and W Ham could look awful by the end of the year.

Last season Wolves started out of the blocks and got top of the league after about 3 games, I think. Look what happened to them. Same with Bolton, they looked good for the first few weeks. As the cliché goes, its a marathon not a sprint.

        no Brendan, no epl.
West Ham are an epl team and will find a way to win, it's what they do
        i can only hope
        Swansea/ Norwich
        Stoke
        Reading
get relegated so we have some proper football on our hands

Stoke and Reading look likely to go. I am still not convinced about W Ham.

Like I said, week one of the FPL is not usually a good barometer about how the season is going to turn out. Over 38 games the teams that often start out looking like world beaters soon get found out.

Swansea were good last year and look like they will be pretty much as good this term. They spanked my team last weekend and I thought we had a decent team. We may well have but most QPR fans are still shellshocked over it.

mate, i like your theory on reading + stoke though i can see them eking away draws
West Ham should be interesting i just feel they're tough but also have the ability to play decent football
QPR got pantsed, but it's game week 1 as you say 37 more to prove emselves worthy
i was not overally impressed with swansea though last year i won a fair bit most weeks after round 4 or 5 betting Draw No Bet hahaha and to aviod relegation, this year i think the manager isn't 1/5th as good as BR

i hope for both our sakes QPR bounce back and beat norwich convincingly
and the hammers show swansea how it's done

    Need opinions:

    Who for this weekend?

    Hangeland / Thompkins / L Barnett(Nor)

If Barnett was nailed on I would start him home against QPR, but he sat out Week 1 and with Bassong in he is rumored to be on the way out.

I only want to use Barnett if he starts. If I put Barnett in with Hangeland as 1st sub, and Barnett doesn't start thats fine, but I'm concerned he will get subbed in at some point.

Or is Hangeland just a better option even though he is away at ManU?
