With Chelsea skipping the Gameweek, the early season form of Swansea and Everton ensures that their Fantasy assets hold firm in our Watchlist rankings. Up front, both Carlos Tevez and Robin Van Persie continue to stand out as the heavyweights of choice…

Goalkeepers

Two clean sheets in two, it’s little wonder that we see Michel Vorm retain top spot in the keeper rankings. Tim Howard climbs to second off the back of Everton’s superb start to the season – his fixtures also improve in the coming weeks, and with Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin in such strong form, further clean sheets seem likely. Howard looks a good option in goal for those without the funds to stretch to the raiding Leighton Baines.

Joe Hart’s lack of clean sheets will be a concern but with Vincent Kompany now seemingly the only secure option in front of him, the City stopper’s stock takes a rise for the month ahead for those willing to spend in this area. Hart remains the favourite as top ranked keeper, despite the early stutters and is your “fire and forget” option.

West Brom’s Ben Foster looks a decent option in the mid-price along with Newcastle’s Tim Krul, who now begins to benefit from a stronger schedule. Meanwhile, Brad Friedel has the fixture list on his side but his stock has taken a knock following persistent speculation surrounding the signing of Hugo Lloris at Spurs. Wigan’s Ali Al-Habsi is your budget option lower down the rankings, with Jussi Jaaskaleinan also worth a glance or two.

Defenders

Angel Rangel retains top spot, having superseded team-mate Chico following the doubts surrounding the centre-back’s fitness going into the win over West Ham. Rangel justified the backing with a goal and clean sheet return, and with fixtures remaining strong, the enterprising right-back holds firm under pressure from Everton’s Leighton Baines in second. Baines’ form epitomises the Toffees right now and, if you’re investing heavily in your defence, the left-back looks the prize option on offer.

With clean sheets so hard to find, the temptation is to opt for cheap options and those defenders that offer attacking potential – Wigan’s Emmerson Boyce fits the bill in both cases and claims a spot in our top five courtesy of some strong short-term fixtures.

While City’s defensive returns have been non-existent, an improved fixture list, and the fact that he stands out as the only apparently secure option, boosts Vincent Kompany in our thinking for the month ahead. He clings to a top five spot, with Tottenham’s Kyle Walker just retaining his place in that select group.

There are a host of mid-price options to consider below that, with West Brom’s Liam Ridgewell and Newcastle’s Steven Taylor appearing to offer decent potential.

Midfielders

Our faith in Gareth Bale wavers but Tottenham’s fixtue list remains strong enough to help him retain his top ranking, holding off the charge from United’s Shinji Kagawa, who now looks set to benefit from Wayne Rooney’s injury with a run of assured starts.

In truth, Eden Hazard would be sitting on top of the rankings had it not been for his blank at the weekend so, right now, he looks up on the likes of Hatem Ben Afra, Yaya Toure, Michu and Marouanne Fellaini as mid-price options. The latter just gets the nod over team-mate Steven Pienaar, although it’s ridiculously close between them – Fellaini’s goal threat just gives him the edge right now, while he continues to be deployed in support of Nikaca Jelavic.

Forwards

It’s no surprise to see Carlos Tevez remain on top here following his returns at Anfield on Sunday. Robin Van Persie cements his second place rank following Rooney’s injury, while Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse is the significant climber in third. The Senegalese striker now has stronger fixtures to come and will surely be well backed to break his duck for the season against Aston Villa this weekend.

Both Nikica Jelevic and Emmanuel Adebayor surely have goals to come given their forthcoming schedules, while Swansea’s Danny Graham still looks the strongest option in the budget bracket over the next month, having opened his account in the win over West Ham.

Lower down there are some great differentials if you want them – Fulham’s Mladen Petric rivals Graham in the budget bracket, as does Wigan’s Arouna Kone who impressed with his first strike at Southampton in Saturday’s win.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Evening all from down under…

Would appreciate your input as a first time player for my GW3 team as going on holidays ’til Tue next week. Took a 4pt hit trading out Rooney for Ade as a differential for RVP and brought in Kag for MUN cover. Have got 153 pts to date.

    Ruddy (Cech)
    Hangeland, Saylor, Demel, (Cuellar, Clark)
    Bale, Pienaar, Michu, Kagawa, (Hazard)
    Tevez (C) Adebayor, Graham

Had Cech to Al-Habsi planned for GW3 as they rotate very well but Torres to Rooney after GW1 ruined that.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated in beating my fellow convicts!

F*$k this. I put too much effort in to trying to articulate myself for it to be lost on previous pages. Interesting how the moment a decent useful comment is posted which encourages debate, insightful and like minded posters swarm on it but to no avail. A million questions make it older than Nwankwo Kanu.

    REPOST (suck it)

There is such a thing as coverage but too often it is being used in the incorrect context.

As you correctly pointed out, it is a completely legitimate concept when considering defensive players who have a good run of fixtures on the horizon.

It does also hold some meaning when referring to an attacking player or players from a team who for some reason you cannot accomodate and hope to somehow limit their damage. This would perhaps be better described as insurance rather than coverage. There are certain teams where ‘insurance’ works as they boast a roster of relatively equal talents and therefore the goals/assists will be spread pretty evenly throughout the team. Swansea this season are shaping up to be like this.

The insurance concept is somewhat ruined by the managers who cannot recognise the teams with an uneven roster of talent where the attacking points will not be spread evenly e.g. RVP at Arsenal. They use ‘coverage’ in a reverse sense, i.e. they seek coverage for a player whose personal points potential is massive instead of seeking coverage for those teams where personal points potential is a lot more evenly distributed… which brings us on to another oft debated “misnomer”…. the “essential/must have player”.

coverage works where you can't afford the prime player in the team i.e. rooney last season but require some man utd "attacking coverage". Thus you go for cheaper options like valencia or nani who cover the attacking options and can provide assists and goals but probably less of a threat to the goal than rooney

if there is an easy run of fixtures for a top 4 team then some attacking coverage of that team is required.

Not true, this debate does seem to be elementary in it's basic nature, as I thought everyone would understand the basic concept. But it is still a much (muchx2) better read than rmt's, or transfer advice etc

Thanks IT and everyone for a handy little debate. In truth I did understand more about the core of the concept than I made out, I've just been irritated by a lot of terrible misuse on here by less insightful members and I wanted to tease it out with a little provocation.

Odd for top goalscorer on betfair

    torres 7.0
    van persie 7.4
    tevez 7.4

so uness you think van persie is going to get more assists then these odds suggest torres and tevez are much better value than van persie

Yup, I guess this is a function of Torres playing up front on his own with no competition for places and RVP competing for goals with Rooney etc al. and Tevez competing with Aguero.

In the short term though, RVP has to be good value?

Wildcarders with Hazard....with his price already going up twice wouldn't it be better to switch him for a player that plays and has a great chance of bonus this week (eg Bale/HBA) and then buying him back at the weekend. He'll cost only 0.1m than you bought him and you get a good shout at points in his position for a week. Downside is that your FT for the international break is gone, bit does that compare to the 10-15 pts that HBA or Bale could get you.

I had a few who were losing value and there were others who were rising in value. I've been in this situation before and all I could see were 2pt players that I'd never ditch. I needed to act fast. Earliest I've wildcarded but the timing felt right. Its clear now that I made a whole heap of poor early decisions eg VDV, Nzog, Mata. I could have done an 8pt hit, but I guess I'll do that when the next wildcard situation comes along.

Havng Tevez from the start and trusting in Torres were about the only thing I got right.

Me and Granville have both wildcarded....take a look at the contribs league and you can see why.

This week has been a great week to WC, in hindsight. I didn't plan to play it so early but with both Reading and Chelsea not playing this week, there has been a ridiculous amount of transfer activity... and people (rightly or wrongly) have decided to play the WC rather than take point hits.

I also think the bank holiday played a part... I've never seen so many transfers made yesterday!!

As the season progresses, transfer activity reduces, and while the rise/drop thresholds adjust accordingly, the bandwagons people are jumping on do not appear to be one week wonders.

So this week is too early, but next week isn't? I think there's more reason to it than for the sole sake of making transfers.

FWIW, I played mine as I had 2 players dropping in value and I thought Ciaran Clark would be suspended for 3 games. I could've taken an 8 point hit, but had Michu's points on the bench in GW1 and didn't get Hazard in early enough. I don't have points in the bank to use! 🙂

Could work out nice with 'coverage' of the following fixtures:

            Southampton vs Man U
            Newcastle vs Villa
            Tottenham vs Norwich
            Man City vs QPR

Am considering this, Jonty. I feel that I 'need' Bale for Spurs' next 3 games, so can either upgrade Pienaar/Fellaini, losing Ba or Baines in the process, or simply lose Hazard for one week. Not decided which route I'm taking yet.

it makes sense.... have one or two midfielders that could become Hazard and pick which one.

I'm thinking of ditching Hazard for HBA/Bale...giving me Kag and HBA and money to get Hazard back.....both I'm happy to have for the next few weeks but equally happy to ditch for Hazard...who I agree is a must for the season.

Hazard is a great player...if getting him in early ends up costing me 4pt then so be it. but remember I've wildcarded so my team will be in great shape so I can easily afford to bench a couple of injured big hitters.

The first game back after an international break is always a lottery, lots of rotation, lots of late flights back.....no way am I saving a transfer based on the possibility of infinite things happening.

The term 'nailed on' is beginning to annoy me almost as much as 'coverage'

The frequency of its use is annoying but it's very useful to know who is "nailed on".

Just watched MOTD from the weekend. That Lallana kid looked a real prospect. Definitely on my watchlist from GW5. I remember reading before the season started, that he was going to play in a more defensive role. Didn't seem that way from the (albeit brief) highlights from the wigan match. Can anyone offer any insight?

his role is more central than last season. as long as it's just 1 striker ahead of him he should get forward plenty still

A lot of Adebayor love on here from what I've read. Why are people assuming he's going to start? He's had no pre-season, right?
