With Chelsea skipping the Gameweek, the early season form of Swansea and Everton ensures that their Fantasy assets hold firm in our Watchlist rankings. Up front, both Carlos Tevez and Robin Van Persie continue to stand out as the heavyweights of choice…

Goalkeepers

Two clean sheets in two, it’s little wonder that we see Michel Vorm retain top spot in the keeper rankings. Tim Howard climbs to second off the back of Everton’s superb start to the season – his fixtures also improve in the coming weeks, and with Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin in such strong form, further clean sheets seem likely. Howard looks a good option in goal for those without the funds to stretch to the raiding Leighton Baines.

Joe Hart’s lack of clean sheets will be a concern but with Vincent Kompany now seemingly the only secure option in front of him, the City stopper’s stock takes a rise for the month ahead for those willing to spend in this area. Hart remains the favourite as top ranked keeper, despite the early stutters and is your “fire and forget” option.

West Brom’s Ben Foster looks a decent option in the mid-price along with Newcastle’s Tim Krul, who now begins to benefit from a stronger schedule. Meanwhile, Brad Friedel has the fixture list on his side but his stock has taken a knock following persistent speculation surrounding the signing of Hugo Lloris at Spurs. Wigan’s Ali Al-Habsi is your budget option lower down the rankings, with Jussi Jaaskaleinan also worth a glance or two.

Defenders

Angel Rangel retains top spot, having superseded team-mate Chico following the doubts surrounding the centre-back’s fitness going into the win over West Ham. Rangel justified the backing with a goal and clean sheet return, and with fixtures remaining strong, the enterprising right-back holds firm under pressure from Everton’s Leighton Baines in second. Baines’ form epitomises the Toffees right now and, if you’re investing heavily in your defence, the left-back looks the prize option on offer.

With clean sheets so hard to find, the temptation is to opt for cheap options and those defenders that offer attacking potential – Wigan’s Emmerson Boyce fits the bill in both cases and claims a spot in our top five courtesy of some strong short-term fixtures.

While City’s defensive returns have been non-existent, an improved fixture list, and the fact that he stands out as the only apparently secure option, boosts Vincent Kompany in our thinking for the month ahead. He clings to a top five spot, with Tottenham’s Kyle Walker just retaining his place in that select group.

There are a host of mid-price options to consider below that, with West Brom’s Liam Ridgewell and Newcastle’s Steven Taylor appearing to offer decent potential.

Midfielders

Our faith in Gareth Bale wavers but Tottenham’s fixtue list remains strong enough to help him retain his top ranking, holding off the charge from United’s Shinji Kagawa, who now looks set to benefit from Wayne Rooney’s injury with a run of assured starts.

In truth, Eden Hazard would be sitting on top of the rankings had it not been for his blank at the weekend so, right now, he looks up on the likes of Hatem Ben Afra, Yaya Toure, Michu and Marouanne Fellaini as mid-price options. The latter just gets the nod over team-mate Steven Pienaar, although it’s ridiculously close between them – Fellaini’s goal threat just gives him the edge right now, while he continues to be deployed in support of Nikaca Jelavic.

Forwards

It’s no surprise to see Carlos Tevez remain on top here following his returns at Anfield on Sunday. Robin Van Persie cements his second place rank following Rooney’s injury, while Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse is the significant climber in third. The Senegalese striker now has stronger fixtures to come and will surely be well backed to break his duck for the season against Aston Villa this weekend.

Both Nikica Jelevic and Emmanuel Adebayor surely have goals to come given their forthcoming schedules, while Swansea’s Danny Graham still looks the strongest option in the budget bracket over the next month, having opened his account in the win over West Ham.

Lower down there are some great differentials if you want them – Fulham’s Mladen Petric rivals Graham in the budget bracket, as does Wigan’s Arouna Kone who impressed with his first strike at Southampton in Saturday’s win.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Doubling up UTD defence in the form of DDG and Rafael a bad idea?

Would fill up my UTD quota with RVP up front.

Not at the moment, although double United at the back could work out well in the future once they tighten up a bit. Only problem is, Rafael probably won't be play too often. I'm not even sure he's nailed-on now!

    N'Zogbia by Faithless

    "I struggle, fight dark forces
    In the clear moon light
    Without fear... N'Zogbia
    I can't...get...no...points..."

Should I transfer this waste of space for Pienaar this week and for a hit or wait until GW4? Rest of my midfield is Bale / Yaya / Michu / Noble.
    Cheers, guys.

🙂 Both Pienaar and N'Zog away from home this GW, but one is loving his football at the minute while the other is in a struggling team. I'd make the transfer if you don't have anything more pressing.

I want to save my WC for as long as possible, so I'm prepared to take a hit between now and then. It worked wonders when I used my WC in GW8 last season. I don't think there's anything too pressing at the moment... Do you?

        DDG / Federici
Hangeland / Zabaleta / Ivanovic / Demel Clyne
        Bale / Yaya / Michu / Noble / N'Zogbia

Ive been studying psychology here in Sweden for a few years, and what I think about reading your blog is that its much easier to remember "bad luck" rather than the times you were actually lucky (3 times easier if I dont remember wrong). This is often the case with FPL aswell..

Yeah, I find things like this quite interesting. I'm not an expert in behavioural psychology but I'm really interested in the way we make decisions and the systematic errors in judgement we are prone to.

Does sum it up nicely, I remember about halfway through Saturday afternoon that hindsight kicks in and I was - damn I had Michu/Petric - to be fair I think I had most players in at one point pre kick off so there will always be an element of that. But luck cerrtainly does play a part - Aguero being injured after 13 mins is a prime example

Thanks Tinkerman. I've long since adopted the 'calculated risk' approach, I seldom dig myself over decisions that looked rational ahead of events. If I can say those decisions were made in good faith on the basis of the available information, it allows me to move on from minor disasters.

However, I analyse risk and write assessments based on mitigation strategy for a living and my synopsis on luck is that its for the uninformed when there is clearly plenty of research material available such as in PL.

        Hi Deano, thanks.

Yeah, there is a lot of research material but what happens on the pitch over 90 minutes is largely effected by luck. No matter what happens, there are things you simply can't know and that are affected by factors that are beyond your control, one of which is luck.

Can't argue with that T - Rooney/Kun injuries are clear evidence of this.

My arguement examples are as follows:

          Bale ave over three years is approx. 8.1 yet he is priced at 9.5 so he is an overvalue risk;
          RVP ave over three years is approx. 10.8 when extrapolated over a full season to cater for injuries so he is an overvalue risk at 13;
Tevez ave over three years is 11.8 so priced at 10 given he has got fit and kissed and made up with the Gaffer is undervalued.

Likewise, and I acknowledge players historically come to the PL from Liga/France and struggle but Hazard and Michu were undervalued at the start of the season (particulrly the latter given his price, record with a lowly team last year and fixtures.)

I am looking forward to the prices available for Kun/Rooney after their injuries as they should be fresh and price undervalued.

Yeah, Rooney for around £11.5m and Aguero for 11m or less would be nice, especially if Tevez and Kagawa get dropped and you time the moves at the right time.

Interesting but I disagree with one word luck. I think the word should be replaced with randomness. It is the randomness of the game. But this doesn't not alter, in my opinion, the essence of your thought. May I suggest the book The Black Swan by a Lebanese American writer. It lets me live comfortably with decisions that are effected by the randomness of football and life.

Is having a backline of the below too much?

    Foster (5.0), Begs (4.5) = 9.5m
    Baines (7.0), BAE (6.5), Cuellar (4.5), S. Taylor (5.0), Demel (4.0) = 27m

Allows a forward line of Hazard, Kags, HBA, Peinaar, Michu, Tevez, Torres, Petric.

Reason for BAE is to cover the lack of spurs players for the coming gw. Might get rid of him if spurs don’t buck their ideas up.

Would love to hear peoples thoughts.

Defensive Spurs cover is not great as they look leaky and a defender doesnt act as cover for their attackers for strong fixtures.

like to have a short poll here.

as I asked above, now I need to confirm this...

The best plan for someone who WC this GW (and wants to get Hazard for his team in GW4 but also want to have Bale for norwich)

is to get Hazard and rip the rewards for his price rise

sell him saturday morning to Bale

    right?

Bad, you only get 50% of any price rise, so you buy him now for £9.9m, sell after price rise Sat am but will still only get £9.9m, you won't get the £0.1m rise on sale. So pointless on this regard. Best to buy Bale now for Sat, switch to Hazard any time after intl when you know fitness etc ahead of GW4.

Some answers above but to recap - you only get 0.1 profit for every 0.2 he rises. If you buy him now for 9.9 and sell him on saturday you will not make any profit because your selling price will be 9.9 still. Sucks.

Bad, then you'll sell at £9.8m (based on £10m price), or £9.9m (Based on £10.1m). Since he can't get to £10.1m before GW3 deadline, you're stuck on a £9.8m selling price.

rather have Bale instead of Kaca for this GW... and I do like to buy players whose price rises a lot, but when those players have some problem, or some bad GWs, a good price rise makes them much more difficult to sell...

Been thinking this through and not sure it's that simple.

I bought Hazard at 9.7m. He's 9.9m and is likely to be 10m by the transfer deadline. If I sell before GW3 (say, to get Bale in), I'd make 0.1m on him. However, he's still 10m and I'd need to find at least 0.2m before GW4 and use a FT. That's 0.4m more than his 9.5m starting price.

I think I'd rather bench him.

I don't think so... you're losing the benefit of jumping on him at 9.7m, and I know it's only 0.2m but that comes in handy when players have risen 0.1 or 0.2m from their starting price, putting them otherwise out of reach.

I'm toying with downgrading Baines to turn Pienaar into Bale. Or even losing Kagawa for now (have RVP), and benching Hazard.

Bad, you only gain 0.1m for every 0.2m he rises, so you would need excess in the bank for you plan to work.

It would reduce his extra cost from rising price, but not totally.

Anyone going into gw3 with just 10 players? Worth taking a hit to get an 11th man (which would be a -8 for the week)?

I'd like to keep Ivanovic and Hazard for their next few fixtures and Gunter/Pog are just bench players really (although bad planning on my part)

    Jussi (Ruddy)

    Clyne Zab Vermalean (Ivanovic, Gunter)

    Michu Cazorla Pienaar Kagawa (Hazard)

    Tevex Adebayor (Pog)

Make a transfer. With no subs to come in he'll only set you back 2 points (worst case scenario) this week. I'd get rid of Pog for Lambert or Petric. Or if you don't have funds get rid of Ivan,

trying to avoid wild card for now as I've no interest in getting RVP in, midfield is good (bar maybe Cazorla) and I'd l'll be downgrading Zab and Verm after next 2 game weeks so that deals with that - if anyone is to go its Ivan for Williams or Saylor and hope Chelsea are a bit rusty at the back when they return!

Hazard price watch--- now up to 7, 594 transfers in since 3am.

At this right he'll have 100 per cent ownership and we'll all effectively have just 14 players.

I'm considering the Hazard Hokey Pokey myself. I wildcarded on the weekend anf have already made money on Hazard and Fellaini. If I swap Fellaini for Pienaar I can sell Hazard Sat morning for Bale and bring him back in that evening, as per your earlier suggestion.

But is that a senseless waste of 0.2mil? I suppose that really depends on what Bale does...

      Goodness.

I see loads of posts outlining plans to buy players to raise team value. Surely obsessing about price rises is short sighted? As far as I can see for every player that goes up there are other budget or mid priced players are revealed that play their way into our teams and these more than offset the rises of the likes of hazard...... Side show/Morrison/dyer etc etc.....

nope, at this stage of the game playing price rises and falls is hugely important as it allows us to build team value and get the right players at the right time. This means that when we wc (either using our main one or in Jan we will have more money to spend, or when we sell a certain player we make more on him, meaning we have more to spend to replace him, theoretically allowing us to get a better player in.
