With Chelsea skipping the Gameweek, the early season form of Swansea and Everton ensures that their Fantasy assets hold firm in our Watchlist rankings. Up front, both Carlos Tevez and Robin Van Persie continue to stand out as the heavyweights of choice…

Goalkeepers

Two clean sheets in two, it’s little wonder that we see Michel Vorm retain top spot in the keeper rankings. Tim Howard climbs to second off the back of Everton’s superb start to the season – his fixtures also improve in the coming weeks, and with Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin in such strong form, further clean sheets seem likely. Howard looks a good option in goal for those without the funds to stretch to the raiding Leighton Baines.

Joe Hart’s lack of clean sheets will be a concern but with Vincent Kompany now seemingly the only secure option in front of him, the City stopper’s stock takes a rise for the month ahead for those willing to spend in this area. Hart remains the favourite as top ranked keeper, despite the early stutters and is your “fire and forget” option.

West Brom’s Ben Foster looks a decent option in the mid-price along with Newcastle’s Tim Krul, who now begins to benefit from a stronger schedule. Meanwhile, Brad Friedel has the fixture list on his side but his stock has taken a knock following persistent speculation surrounding the signing of Hugo Lloris at Spurs. Wigan’s Ali Al-Habsi is your budget option lower down the rankings, with Jussi Jaaskaleinan also worth a glance or two.

Defenders

Angel Rangel retains top spot, having superseded team-mate Chico following the doubts surrounding the centre-back’s fitness going into the win over West Ham. Rangel justified the backing with a goal and clean sheet return, and with fixtures remaining strong, the enterprising right-back holds firm under pressure from Everton’s Leighton Baines in second. Baines’ form epitomises the Toffees right now and, if you’re investing heavily in your defence, the left-back looks the prize option on offer.

With clean sheets so hard to find, the temptation is to opt for cheap options and those defenders that offer attacking potential – Wigan’s Emmerson Boyce fits the bill in both cases and claims a spot in our top five courtesy of some strong short-term fixtures.

While City’s defensive returns have been non-existent, an improved fixture list, and the fact that he stands out as the only apparently secure option, boosts Vincent Kompany in our thinking for the month ahead. He clings to a top five spot, with Tottenham’s Kyle Walker just retaining his place in that select group.

There are a host of mid-price options to consider below that, with West Brom’s Liam Ridgewell and Newcastle’s Steven Taylor appearing to offer decent potential.

Midfielders

Our faith in Gareth Bale wavers but Tottenham’s fixtue list remains strong enough to help him retain his top ranking, holding off the charge from United’s Shinji Kagawa, who now looks set to benefit from Wayne Rooney’s injury with a run of assured starts.

In truth, Eden Hazard would be sitting on top of the rankings had it not been for his blank at the weekend so, right now, he looks up on the likes of Hatem Ben Afra, Yaya Toure, Michu and Marouanne Fellaini as mid-price options. The latter just gets the nod over team-mate Steven Pienaar, although it’s ridiculously close between them – Fellaini’s goal threat just gives him the edge right now, while he continues to be deployed in support of Nikaca Jelavic.

Forwards

It’s no surprise to see Carlos Tevez remain on top here following his returns at Anfield on Sunday. Robin Van Persie cements his second place rank following Rooney’s injury, while Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse is the significant climber in third. The Senegalese striker now has stronger fixtures to come and will surely be well backed to break his duck for the season against Aston Villa this weekend.

Both Nikica Jelevic and Emmanuel Adebayor surely have goals to come given their forthcoming schedules, while Swansea’s Danny Graham still looks the strongest option in the budget bracket over the next month, having opened his account in the win over West Ham.

Lower down there are some great differentials if you want them – Fulham’s Mladen Petric rivals Graham in the budget bracket, as does Wigan’s Arouna Kone who impressed with his first strike at Southampton in Saturday’s win.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Is Cleverley a good option for cheap united midfielder? My opponents got Kagawa and Valencia, need a differential.

Go Kag and somebody else he doesn't have, no point avoiding players that are gong to score points and replacing them with others that are less likely just to be different. There's tons of high scoring midfield potential this season Yaya,Nasri, hazard, bale, side show, pienaar,HBA,Kag,Gerrard etc etc finding differentials in hat lot should be staight forward

Team is linked I'm doing one of these transfer combinations this week.

      Cole & Bent -> Williams & Ba
      Cole & Bent -> Baines & Petric
      Cole & Bent -> Baines & Ba
      Cole & Dembele -> Williams & Yaya/HBA

Leaning towards the second one as it leaves enough money to upgrade vdv to hazard next week with enough change to upgrade Dembele or Larsson later.

Even so, Rooney has said he's comfortable dropping deep, playing in the hole would hardly be a big departure form him. Granted, he doesn't have the typical ball skills but SAF isn't typical with how he positions players either.

Trying to squeeze RVP & Baines into my team. Pretty much accepted a kack defence, but would like to hear peoples thoughts on the options below:-

      Team 1.

      Ruddy, beg
Baines, S. Taylor, Cuellar, demel, Clyne
      Hazard, kalic, Barfa, Michu, Peinaar,
      Tevez, Torres, Rvp

      Team 2.

      Vorm, beg
Rafeal, s. Taylor, Cuellar, demel, Hughes
      Hazard, kalic, Barfa, Michu, Peinaar,
      Tevez, Torres, Rvp

      So it comes down to

      Ruddy, Baines, Clyne

      Or

      Vorm, Rafeal, Hughes

Been missing for the past hour and a lot of good things happening on here.

      1)Impressive tackle, lovely read.
My 2 cents, I agree that the term 'coverage' fits in perfectly for the defenders with the exception of those in the Baines mould and when it comes to attacking players, it varies from team to team ie Swansea coverage is an acceptable definition but the set of players reduces when you are talking about a team like Che where some players are more effective then the others.
      2) Jonty, glad to know that i think at your level. Suggested the exact same thing to Cristina in the morning 🙂
3)Tinkerman, i look forward to more.

Cracking stuff. A very refreshing change 🙂

cheers, assuming that relates to wildcarders pocketing Hazard's rise, ditching him before the deadline for a high scoring potential player and then get him back in saturday night?

That's ignoring the tangible value of the transfer itself for GW4. Not sure.

I know. It could be worth up to 4 points if you see it as forcing a hit down the line. On the flip side, getting Bale and having him explode could be worth considerably more. It might even remove the need for a Hazard transfer if he does well enough.

Not going to plan too far ahead given all the drama that's happened recently. But if Bale fails it's an option.

I'm struggling to keep up with these posts too, but I agree, a lot of good content lately so well worth it! Well done Tinkerman I enjoyed that too...I'm also potentially on the Hazard in-out plan...and I haven't seen I.T.'s post yet but I'm sure it's good too! 🙂

You will of course lose half the value of the rise by transferring him out again, but I guess you'll never get that cash anyway unless you sell him for someone else permanently. Interesting thinking.

Also Granville, yes Hazard has had a couple of good GW's. That said the odds of Bale having a smashing GW are about as high as Hazard having a good GW4 playing the 4th GW after playing 3 matches in the international break.

I see him rising in price all throughout the international break. I don't think I'd want to wait all that time to see if he's picked up an injury and then have to buy him for 10.4m

I'm not against getting him once the deadline closes that particular saturday but its a fair enough shout to play lets say a Kagawa or a Bale over a Noble because in my opinion both are capable of exploding against their opponents. Worth the 0.1M lost. In some cases, 0.2M

When it comes to discussing the 'game', i need a few opinions here.
How far do you guys go in terms of planning and how far should one ideally look?
I personally have an idea of what transfers i am going to make in the next couple of weeks but there is a lot of form involved which changes a lot of plans.

I'm looking at the best strategy being having the good fixtures covered over the next 6 GW's or so and planning for probably the next GW or 2 more GW's to have a sense of direction.

      Is there a thumb rule?

I'm not sure if there's a definite rule. I'm fairly new to this but just experience from losing Rooney and Aguero in 2 GWs soon messes up your plans for future transfers rather quickly!

Agree with this, but at the start of the season I think u have a better chance to have that 5th crapmidfielder a couple of more gws, just because all the rotation (cups, national team call ups) just havent started just yet..

I think theres loads of "rules"
When I do transfers, I look very close to stats and highlights (and ofc as many games as I can).. then make my transfers, but also planning coming transfers and diff options.. (leaving money in the bank, saving to make 2 ft or whatever)... Just so I have the option to make my prefered transfers if everything goes right.. about 2-5 weeks ahead

Next six weeks....don't look beyond that really. Also I usually have a vague plan with tansfers, but keep it flexible.

For example I'm thinking of getting HBA in for Kagawa in gwk 6. May or may not happen, but nice to have a vague plan.

Laters, I don't tend to look further than the six GW ticker. Beyond that, there are too many factors that can come out of left-field. Right now,, for example, I'm mulling whether to ditch Brad for Chesny, sell Terry or Ivano (and to whom?), plus watching the Hazard disaster (since I don't have him).

These are the issues which I plan to address, and that's plenty.

Pretty much reiterating the fact that a vague outline of the next 6 Gw's is pretty much how far you need to go. Your next transfer should validate the flexibility to carry out the one or 2 more transfers thereafter. And when it comes to Aguero/Rooney situations, not much you can do but bite the dust.

My general view is that if you plan your team to death, as you say, sudden changes in form/injuries leave you in trouble.

I try to leave myself some flexibility in terms ot transfers: work out which, if any, are essential and maybe have 2/3 in mind over a 4 week period, giving yourself some leeway in reacting to emergencies. Similarly, a bit of spare cash helps.

In terms of fixtures, I also tend to look 5-6 weeks ahead. Interesting to know what others do...

I tend to favour form over fixtures. In terms of planning my squad, I like to have a contingency plan for every player should the worst happen (not always possible). Simple things like knowing where to find 0.5 if Senderos comes back and takes Hughes's place should be planned for, and knowing that if Frei takes Kaca's place that's a straight swap. Can't plan for everything though! 🙂

Jumping on this a bit late but I back my rotations in defence and in goal so I don't have to worry about them leaving just 10 positions to chop and change. Then I look forward 6 weeks and see the fixtures. Then I work out what I have to do to have the money to make my transfer in lets say 3 weeks. Then I blow it all up by transferring Kagawa to Valencia. 😉 Na, there are some GW when I already know hat I'm doing and some I don't for example

        GW4 nothing planned
        GW5 Yaya > lallana
        GW6 Torres > Suarez/Aguero

Am I crazy for not choosing RVP in my wildcard? (Tev, Tor, Pet)

He just takes up so much cap and I think I might prefer having a sturdy defence. Am i nuts?

Depends on your team. I got him immediately on hearing the Roo news, I suspect a lot of transfers will go RvP's way, especially if he can bang a goal or two in against Soton. It also means I don't have to sweat the MU Mid minefield, which is comforting.

          Good thinking re MU mids.

          Team is:

          Vorm Cerny
          S. Taylor Baines A.Cole Hangeland Cuellar
          Hazard Yaya Kagawa Pienaar Kaca
          Torres Tevez Petric

I've sacrificed RVP for a healthier defence and keeper.
Was - Baines A. Cole Figueroa Demel Cuellar and Schwarzer in goal

Too early to say. RVP is still adapting and only had one chance against Fulham. Give it a few weeks and we will see. Torres has amazing service this season so if he does not thrive now he never will. Tevez is playing well and is a must have at the moment.

      Chaps 2 questions...

      1. Did I read right that Hazard's price can't rise above 10.0 prior to GW3? Thinking of bringing him in at that price but not a penny more!

      2. What we think to Spurs' attacking prospects? Thinking of doubling up (Bale /Ade)

I don't think he can't rise above £10m. His price is entirely dependent on the number of managers who transfer him in so there is no 'ceiling' I wouldn't have thought. I may be wrong but don't think I am.

there is definitely no ceiling. if over 100% NTI (net transfers in) is reached within 1 day that the price of a player goes up (I think at 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning) by 0.1. but for sure his price won't go over 10.0 by this weekent. The people who were planning on buying him have already bought him. usually there is another increase just before the deadline but in this case it shouldn't influence a player that isn't even playing.

technically he can go over 10.0 by raising 0.1 per day. He just went to 9.9 and figuring he is not playing this weekend it is highly unlikely that his price will reach 10.0 let alone go over 10.0.

Riddler, having watched their first two games, cutting edge is what Spurs have lacked. This leads me to believe Ade starts vs NOR over Defoe, but that's not to blame Jermain. Siggy/DVD/Lennon have all been guilty of ballsing up opportunities for themselves or others.

But their general play has been pretty good, and it shouldn't take much to spark a goal riot, which is on the cards at The Lane against NOR. But I do worry about Ade's fitness. For this reason, I'm happy to go with just Bale (set for a massive season in my opinion), I'll sit and watch Ade for a bit and then see.

        1. My understanding that he'll max @ the 10.0 (and will prob do so overnight), but I'm unclear as to whether he can then rise another 0.5 from GW's 3-4, even though he ain't playing this weekend?? I'd be leaning in favour him potentially able to rise another 0.5 next week, but am open to correction....

        2. I've just gotten rid of Bale so I think it highly probable they'll spank Norwich good on Sat!! 🙂 They have to break their duck eventually tho and it could well be this weekend. Can't NOT see Ade starting after last week's shenanigans tho, and you'd have thought even if Bale doesn't score, Ade's presence will surely garner him an assist or two....

Milan linked with Bendtner apparently. After allegedly being linked with Carroll. Either someone is coming up with imaginative nonsense or Milan need to look at their scouts 😉

Rafael van der Vaart has agreed personal terms with Hamburger SV, but the two clubs are miles apart in their estimations of a transfer fee.

Spurs want €18 million, HSV can only afford €12 million, and even that requires substantial help from one of the club's private backers.

Daft move for VdV, even if it comes to fruition - HSV will be fighting against relegation all season, and the club could use the money on 3-4 smaller reinforcements.

You reckon they will come to an agreement? I am asking for an opinion and opinion alone 🙂
