Southampton rounded off their transfer business for the summer last week by snapping up the highly-rated Gaston Ramirez from Bologna on a four-year contract. The 21-year-old moves to St Mary’s for an undisclosed fee after the Saints – in a clear statement of intent for the season ahead – beat off several leading clubs to acquire his services:

Nigel Adkins was clearly delighted upon completion of the surprise deal, with Ramirez expected to be installed immediately into the Saints first XI ahead of the Gameweek 4 trip to Arsenal:

A lot of hard work has gone in from the Football Club with a lot of negotiations behind the scenes to get this deal done. Great credit to everyone because we have a young, exciting talent joining us who is one of the best around. The Chairman has gone and backed this deal big-time with the financial outlay, and what we have got is one of the most exciting prospects in world football coming to St Mary’s. There is a lot of ambition at the Football Club and we are all delighted that Gaston is going to come and join us.

The Statistics

Ramirez’s career began in his native country as an 18-year-old with Penarol. The winger remained there for a season and a half, with six goals in 20 league matches helping his side win the Uruguayan Primera Division in 2009/10. His displays quickly caught the eye of Bologna, with the Italian side snapping up the youngster for a bargain €2.5m in August 2010.

Installed as a key member of their first XI, Ramirez produced four goals and a couple of assists over 16 starts and nine sub appearances in his first season is Serie A. The 2011/12 campaign saw Ramirez step up in performance, though, helping the club to a ninth placed finish, with eight goals and five assists over 33 league appearances indicative of his burgeoning talent. In terms of internationals, he has turned out for his country at U20 and U23 level and represented the senior side on 10 occasions.

The Prospects

The Uruguayan’s close control and superb dribbling ability, allied with a keen eye for a long range strike, will considerably bolster Adkins’ offence. Able to play on either wing or in “the holeâ€, Ramirez should fit seamlessly into the Saints’ new 4-3-2-1 system, with a role on the flank in support of Rickie Lambert looking likely.

While Fantasy owners of Adam Lallana have seen the midfielder’s potential dip after a couple of appearances in central midfield, Ramirez looks assured of a more attacking berth, with his arrival set to have a major knock-on effect on the game time of Jason Puncheon. Ramirez’s set-piece capabilities could also see him rival Lallana and Lambert for a share of direct free-kicks; another factor to consider when assessing his potential.

Despite three defeats so far, Southampton clearly have goals in them. Braces against City and United are indicative of their threat up front and suggest they may be better suited to counter more attack-minded teams – a fact backed up by their inability to register a goal in the Gameweek 2 home defeat at the hands of Wigan. Lambert, with strikes against both Manchester clubs, has already shown he can flourish and if Ramirez can hit the ground running, he could well offer us a decent mid-price options for those Fantasy managers looking for alternatives to the current template midfields.

Coming in at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League, the new boy costs the same as Lallana, though the Sky Sports game has handed him a 5.5 valuation; the priciest of Southampton’s midfield. In the short-term, the fixture list is relatively reasonable; trips to Arsenal and Everton look tough, though home clashes against Villa and Fulham in the next four will surely offer Adkins’ side the chance of producing. Already adrift at the bottom of the league, Southampton desperately need to start picking up the points their performances have perhaps merited – Ramirez may well be key to their chances of doing so.

A little early to add alot of those players other than RVP and Tevez, (no doubt its a nice team and all) but both hazard and michu are still new to the league and noboby becomes a season keeper in 3 GWs, AJ is new to sunderland we have no idea my the impact he'll have, Berba is a drifter and proberly only good for home games

He can be given the captain's armband every game, something I wouldn't feel as confident giving to Tevez. Plus even when Rooney is back he'll play the furthest forward, so will be the main man at Utd. So far, Utd haven't looked good. RVP's points will only improve.

to be fair you have no idea how they will play. When Rooney came on at the weekend he played as the main striker with RVP behind him. And Rooney will most likely also take penalties.
Saying that RVP is a must have for now, but still Rooney over him for me once he is fit.

but with Roo on pens that about minus 7-10 goals for RVP. My big fear is that with CL, both could be rotated. Still making me go for the cheaper Roo as I feel both will score similar pts per game.

There isn't such thing as fixture proof. In tough games you get less chances and you could score less. Just saying. And everybody are forgetting the CL games.

He could be rested or subbed off early. This isn't Arsenal any more. They have Rooney. Chicha and Welbeck if needed.

I believe SAF thinks that he is back in the Cole, Yorke, Teddy, Ole days. I bet ya he thinks like that. He thinks that the formula of success is having 4 strikes who can step up whenever needed

Your first statement is the same as saying 'fixtures over form'. This is clearly flawed.

Plus your second point would indicate that RVP is more likely to play 90 minutes in these games, as he will play more against better teams.

That is not "clearly flawed." FPL is as much art as science but fixtures are just as important as form. There's a reason the only team RVP didn't score against last year was Manchester City

Exactly - it's not always fixtures over form and that's basically what he said... The probabilities change, but I'd still rather have RVP against City than someone worse against an easy team.

i am with you in principal. however, the entire world will CAPTAIN RVP next game. if you miss out on a 2 goals+1 assist performance for example - you will be in a 30 points hole more often than not.
now, if he does nothing, you still need your investment elsewher (presumably one more big hitter in Mid and 2 in defence) to come good, which is not at all assured this season. except for bains and vermalen there are no big hitters in defence so far, and verm has very difficult 2 fixures after this game.
      not easy.

No idea. I look at the NTI column to get an idea of what amount players are being transfered in, then keep an eye on the min % column till they hit 100%.
            They usually rise that night.

Yaya will get a rise before dembele no doubt in my mind, they are both getting around the same NTI in per day(1000-2000) with yaya on 8.6% already he has a head start and when the market picks up closer to the deadline they will both be getting around 3000+ transfers a day. Don't swap if you have yaya from his first rise

+ the additional transfers than dembele gets 2day will be wasted when his price rises 2nite and his NTI gets reset, so that around 500+ wasted transfers

Depends if you want Yaya in your final team or not - my WC midfield is currently Hazard Yaya Dyer Michu Nolan
Will keep Yaya Hazard and one of Michu/Dyer but need them all to raise another .1 before selling.
Is Dembele likely to rise twice before Nolan rises once more? He's currently on 11% with 460 NTI??

I havn't been really been keeping an eye on nolan but from my glances it seems that he doesn't get more than 1000 transfers a day. So at the rate dembele is rising I say dembele could pip him by a day or 2. Although it really depends on if the market speeds up or stays slow. Monday and tuesday had approx 519694 and 556812 while wednesday had only 245674. If it stays slow neither could get their 2nd rise but I expect it to speed up next week after the internationals.

Not sure they differ to much from one another, min max always seem to be the same.

The only thing that really matters is that once that thing tiks past 100%, 0.1 mil comes a knocking the nxt day.

Little wizard are you feeling a bit more confident about Villa after their last game? I know it as only a point but they worked hard for it. Don't think i've seen Darren Bent lacking this much confidence. He needs to get scoring soon.

Count, I had Bent the last 3 fixtures so watched every Villa game. They dont look as bad as people are suggesting, but Bent looks very lacking in confidence a la Torres last season. He had numerous chances to shoot in the last game where instead he dawdled and passed or shot too late. I also think with Lambert changing 5 players a game, its not going to help him gain any sort of read for where to run and when he's going to receive a pass. Took a hit to gt him out for Fletcher.

        Good afternoon.

We were great against Newcastle, got them to play how we wanted them to play and really controlled the game at times. Showing signs of how PL wants us to play, as we looked like a McLeish team in the first two games. Bent scored a good goal at Tranmere and will turn it around soon. Give it a league goal and he will be firing again!

I will see how he fits in but he's another option over Fletcher and Lambert for me. PL clearly favours a 4-4-2 and Benteke can score goals so he could form a great partnership with Bent. I just hope he's not rotated with Agbonlahor, but can't see it too often as we paid quite a bit for him.

I hope not, atm he seems to favour a narrow diamond, and this worked at Newcastle. But with Albrighton injured and N'Zogbia out of favour, he could add a bit of width. But tbh he's much better as an impact sub, and I think this is how he'll be used.

Of the 2 Lescott to Ridgewell is more pressing - Graham will do better than last season, and is doing okay now, dont let the explosion of the midfielders fool you into thinking he's a bad pick.

I didnt have RVP last week, but I still got 70 points & moved up to 60,000 in the world.

That was in a week when RVP hit a hattrick (-2 for the penalty miss).

He is not essential at all.

Perhaps not, along as you get your captain right. Get it wrong and others have RVP as captain and he performs then all your strong single scores won't keep you in touch. Captain is King and RVP is a top option at present. If there was no captaincy element to the game then I agree RVP is not essential.

          It clearly does make sense.

If I get RVP in my team, then I have less cash to spread out over the rest of my team.

So having the cheaper players in my team, I will get less points from them & my team is totally dependant on one player.

Well in that sense yet, but you were using a week when everybody did well to make up for one player as evidence that he's not essential. It's not really 'dependent' on one player, he's only £13.4, and as a captain choice there is nobody better.

I'd just be worried about being priced out of it sooner or later. If he does well against Wigan his price could be touching £14m, and then it's probably too late.

No true. You equate cheaper players with less points, you including Michu, Dyer, Jenkinson et al, in that...?

Also, 13m 9m 6/7m = 28/9m for your forward line is not excessive, and leaves plenty of cash for a strong squad. This will only increase as your team value goes up.

It doesn't though - you could do this with any team - you could make a team every week that gets around 100 points without RVP in it. I'm not saying he is essential now (we have no idea if he will keep it up) but he could quickly become essential, even if it's just because everybody else will captain him and he's capable of good things in any given match.

This would explain why it was possible to get a good score without RVP - he is surely the player who is most likely to score bigger than other high ownership players. I just like the fact that if he is the highest scoring player, captaining him doubles this difference. He's just a very safe captaincy option, and without Aguero and Rooney around, I wouldn't know who else would give me confidence.

I like City/Utd captain rotation at home. I'd like Aguero and RVP/Rooney as captain options. Hazard possibly I suppose.

1 goal attempt in three games? Maybe that's good for a defender, but Verm had twice that many.

Anyway, Lord Leighton of Baines aside, attacking points from defenders are not something I think of as anything other than a bonus. I'm happy that Gibbs is all but nailed on.

      everyone should get Mark Noble

he takes all the set pieces + pens, the very definition of a bargain

had him in initial squad...got rid of him a few days ago. he only executes corners from one side (think right) no fouls nor pens....better options for 5.0...well 4.9

specially without andy's aerial threat...even less potential.

        chuck him out!

      Hmmmm.
      1) Verm and Pienaar or
      2) Baines and a 6.5m Mid.

I am .1 off being able to have Baines and Pienaar, but I think maybe having 2 Everton is too much! I also have szczesny

Don't double up on any team's defense, despite Arsenal looking really good defensively this season.

Take Baines and a 6.5 mid.

Damn you Gaston Ramirez. I really liked the look of Puncheon for a 4.4m WC midfield filler.

Been flirting with it, but already taken a hit and have just hit the button. RMWCT please!

      Foster Begovic
      Baines Saylor Hangeland Cuellar Demel
      Hazard Cazorla Pienaar Nolan Guthrie
      RVP Tevez Fletcher

Only issue I can see is no Swansea - cant afford Michu, not too bothered about the rest.

So my midfield looks like a bit of a mess. Have AJ* (possibly injured) Jarvis (possibly injured) Bale, Hazard and Sterling (Possibly rotated).

What to do with that merry mob?

Move Bale to Cazorla and Johnson to Morrison or Dembele or the Gaston Martin, imo.

What are the people who own both Michu and Dyer planning on doing?

I want to bring in Guthrie to free up some cash to upgrade my defence, but it's hard to take out a player with good form and fixtures.

Would keeping both seem like overkill?

I have both, keeping for a few weeks probably. I prefer what I've seen of Dyer so far, but with the new wingers coming in he might be due for rotation. Hopefully in a couple of weeks either A) Dyer gets rotated, I switch him out; B) Michu goes off the boil, I switch him out; or C) they both keep getting me points
