Southampton rounded off their transfer business for the summer last week by snapping up the highly-rated Gaston Ramirez from Bologna on a four-year contract. The 21-year-old moves to St Mary’s for an undisclosed fee after the Saints – in a clear statement of intent for the season ahead – beat off several leading clubs to acquire his services:

Nigel Adkins was clearly delighted upon completion of the surprise deal, with Ramirez expected to be installed immediately into the Saints first XI ahead of the Gameweek 4 trip to Arsenal:

A lot of hard work has gone in from the Football Club with a lot of negotiations behind the scenes to get this deal done. Great credit to everyone because we have a young, exciting talent joining us who is one of the best around. The Chairman has gone and backed this deal big-time with the financial outlay, and what we have got is one of the most exciting prospects in world football coming to St Mary’s. There is a lot of ambition at the Football Club and we are all delighted that Gaston is going to come and join us.

The Statistics

Ramirez’s career began in his native country as an 18-year-old with Penarol. The winger remained there for a season and a half, with six goals in 20 league matches helping his side win the Uruguayan Primera Division in 2009/10. His displays quickly caught the eye of Bologna, with the Italian side snapping up the youngster for a bargain €2.5m in August 2010.

Installed as a key member of their first XI, Ramirez produced four goals and a couple of assists over 16 starts and nine sub appearances in his first season is Serie A. The 2011/12 campaign saw Ramirez step up in performance, though, helping the club to a ninth placed finish, with eight goals and five assists over 33 league appearances indicative of his burgeoning talent. In terms of internationals, he has turned out for his country at U20 and U23 level and represented the senior side on 10 occasions.

The Prospects

The Uruguayan’s close control and superb dribbling ability, allied with a keen eye for a long range strike, will considerably bolster Adkins’ offence. Able to play on either wing or in “the hole”, Ramirez should fit seamlessly into the Saints’ new 4-3-2-1 system, with a role on the flank in support of Rickie Lambert looking likely.

While Fantasy owners of Adam Lallana have seen the midfielder’s potential dip after a couple of appearances in central midfield, Ramirez looks assured of a more attacking berth, with his arrival set to have a major knock-on effect on the game time of Jason Puncheon. Ramirez’s set-piece capabilities could also see him rival Lallana and Lambert for a share of direct free-kicks; another factor to consider when assessing his potential.

Despite three defeats so far, Southampton clearly have goals in them. Braces against City and United are indicative of their threat up front and suggest they may be better suited to counter more attack-minded teams – a fact backed up by their inability to register a goal in the Gameweek 2 home defeat at the hands of Wigan. Lambert, with strikes against both Manchester clubs, has already shown he can flourish and if Ramirez can hit the ground running, he could well offer us a decent mid-price options for those Fantasy managers looking for alternatives to the current template midfields.

Coming in at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League, the new boy costs the same as Lallana, though the Sky Sports game has handed him a 5.5 valuation; the priciest of Southampton’s midfield. In the short-term, the fixture list is relatively reasonable; trips to Arsenal and Everton look tough, though home clashes against Villa and Fulham in the next four will surely offer Adkins’ side the chance of producing. Already adrift at the bottom of the league, Southampton desperately need to start picking up the points their performances have perhaps merited – Ramirez may well be key to their chances of doing so.

Yeah I think it helps as you don't need to shoot with such a high ISO in low light conditions but I hate carting my tripod around with me. If it means you getting out of the house it can't be a bad thing hey 🙂

Wildcarded and going insane over what I'm going to do with my team, any suggestions?

    Vorm/Cerny

    Rangel/Jenkinson/Cuellar/Bertrand/Gunter

    Hazard/Michu/Nolan/Pienaar/Ramirez

    Ade/VP/Tevez

Should I stick or twist to Lambert/Cazorla/Colocinni or 4.5 keeper over Ade/Ramirez/Cuellar or Cerney?

Also, please remind me why a balanced home/away rotation is good!? With the Twist option I get 3/5 home games most week as opposed to 2/5 home games most week with the current team.

Cheers in advance to any much appreciated responses!

Cerny is not a good option, always go for two playing keepers as even 1 point is better than none (obviously don't go for anyone you think can concede 4 in a match).

The rest of the team seems ok, Bertrand and Ramirez are both big punts, choose one of them and replace the other with a player. Possbly upgrade a midfielder and make one of the Guthrie could work.

Thanks a whole bunch mate! I was really on the fence but thought the same about Cazorla, was scared Ade could explode but to be fair Lambert is brilliant at what he does and is on red hot form! Your response is making me keep faith in the alternate squad 😉 Also instead of Colo I upgraded Nolan to McClean instead (Have a feeling with Fletcher as a front man he's going to get a few assists in and also looks like he's ready to hit form right about now after seeing his volley that just went over the bar and the news that he scored 2 goals midweek in the League/FA cup I think it was)

I'd say Lambert is similar to Holt last season , as for Southampton it is too soon to judge, they look too similar to Blackpool 2 seasons ago, they play well and attack big teams and loose against the mid, however this is three rounds only.

As for Ade/Totenham, I'm not sure if its AVB or just something else, however if its AVB the day to get them in (ADe/Bale/others) is the day he gets sacked. Never followed at Porto so if successful no idea what to do.

McClean is a good choice, Fletcher I'd be worred that he might end up as a flair , e.g. giving a performance as last round oncein a while but failing in consitency, just got this feeling.

              All in all good luck!

This GW I fear that since a lot of the transfers in are WCers us non-WCers will have plenty of differentials, but that might not be a good thing this time around. At the moment I'd rather be less different from the WC teams than I am!

It's the best when your team already looks like WC teams without any transfers 😀 I'm building team value then using my WC much later on so no one can touch me!

RVP as a differential was fun while it lasted. Still don't have Hazard in my team. Cazorla ftw! Hopefully Aguero will be a goal machine when he comes back. Worried about reinjury though.

Stick or twist with this lot.. £1.7m banked

    Jaask
    Ivanovich, Hangeland, Baines
    Michu, Dembele, Hazard, Larsson
    Petric, Tevez, Rvp

    Noble, Cuellar, Clyne, Fed

Would like Ben Arfa but away to Everton probably isn't the best timing.

I personally wouldn't have dembele as I just can't see him getting the points. I could still be convinced but I'm sure there are better options, like as you say Ben Arfa. Have to say he did takes his goal well to be fair to him

Just to be clear I'm not on a wildcard. Dembele's been in since the start so i'll give him a couple of games and see what happens at Spurs. Petric gets at least one more week too. Was considering LArsson -> HBA but it's probably the wrong week todo it.

    Evening lads, any advice? Have:

    Friedel
    A.Cole - Cuellar - Hangeland
    Noble - Dyer - Bale - Kagawa
    Tevez - RVP - Graham

    Thinking:
    A) Noble -> Yaya (zero left in bank)
    B) Kagawa -> Hazard (1.8 in bank)

    Thanks!

Hmm I took a hit for Baines last week, didn't work too well, but that being said, it's Baines, he will come good. Who do you suggest for me Corrigan? Ideally want to downgrade Rafa and a WBA or Newcastle boy seem like the best bets, considered Huth, but Stoke's fixtures don't get good till about GW10.

I'd prefer Maloney, but Marv's price drop has made him unattainable atm without a sacrifice elsewhere (i.e Popov over Ridgewell) Other option is too keep him until we wc or have 2 FTs and no idea how else to use either of them

I totally forgot my manners, I guess a default rate my team would be satisfactory:

    Mignolet/Schwarzer

    Demel/Gorkss/Vermaelen/Ivanovic/Hangeland

    Hazard/Michu/Yaya/Nolan/Gibson

    Torress/Tevez/Graham

    3.1 in the bank

I was thinking of either Graham-> Berbatov or then waiting for next week (I've done my 2 free transfers).
Generally I don't want Van Persie yet, and I'm doing o.k. worldwide (243 points).

Obviously it's more of a Boast My Team than a Rate My One but if you have any suggestions I'd listen.

    Wild Card team:

    Foster Begovic
Hughes Cuellar Demel 4.0 def XXX
    Cazorla Hazard Michu Guthrie XXX
    RVP Tevez XXX

Have around 21.5 to fill the gaps. Want to get some Everton cover so for the XXXs:
    a. Baines, Yaya or HBA, Lambert
    b. Vermalen, Nolan, Jelavic
    c. Vermalen, Pienaar, Fletcher (or Lambert with money left over to do Tevez -> Aguero)

Me and my mate are entering an XBOX360 FIFA 12 tournament this weekend. I'm pretty good at FIFA, and the teams I use most often are Chelsea, Barcelona and PSG - My comfort level with the AI is the most with them I figure.

Assuming all transfers accounted for since the 1st of September, what team do you think is the strongest in the video game and might give us an edge over our opponents? I know I should play with the team I'm comfy with, but just throwing this out there to see what you guys think.

    Thanks in advance 😉
