The Fantasy Football Scout content has been building to a boil as the weekdays pass and, now, late on Friday night/early on Saturday morning (depending on how you choose to see things), we’ve put out just about all we can give you ahead of the coming weekend. Here follows our “Catch-Up” of all that goodness ahead of Gameweek Six…

Teamsheet Talking Points

The big bombshell undoubtedly came on Friday afternoon, when Dimitar Berbatov was ruled out by Martin Jol for “10 days to two weeks” after sustaining hip and thigh problems in training on Thursday. Drafted in by nearly 200,000 Fantasy managers over the last fortnight, the Bulgarian leaves us with a real quandary up front. If Jol’s prognosis is correct, the next time we can expect to see Berbatov in action is October 20, when Fulham host Villa after the upcoming international break in Gameweek 8.

The Manchester clubs dominate our thoughts as we plan for the coming Gameweek and it was as far back as Tuesday that begun to get Fantasy managers in a tizzy one way or another.

A midweek cup tie at home to Aston Villa was a good chance for Roberto Mancini to give his first team a bit of rest early into a long season – Sergio Aguero, just back from injury, absent entirely from his squad as a testament to this – so the sight of Carlos Tevez in the starting XI for City’s Capital One Cup tie has sent shivers down the spine of many Fantasy Premier League Managers. Then the game went to extra time and Tevez (as well as fellow striker Mario Balotelli) subsequently played a full 120 minutes.

Everyone knows that Carlos Tevez is able to start two games in five days and kit up at Fulham on Saturday but whether his manager gives him the chance to do that is another matter entirely. There has been lots of debate over exactly what Tuesday’s decision means and we’re currently leaning towards the Argentinian failing to start his second league game in a row. If that proves to be the case, then it’s more than a bit of a pickle for the half of the FPL population who currently have him in their squads.

While City have a smorgasbord of attacking options to worry about, their rivals from across the way have exactly a dilemma in reverse. Team captain Nemanja Vidic has been ruled out injured for eight weeks.

A United defence that has looked far from resolute to date, and that doesn’t know who’ll be in goal from one week to the next, will surely feel the pinch in the coming weeks. But as my colleague Granville pointed out there could be a silver lining for those Fantasy managers on a budget. If Alexander Buttner stakes a real claim for the left-back spot at United then we could see a backline from a title contending team with every player costing less than 6.0 in FPL. Whether reduced cost is reflected in the results to come is, however, something only time can tell.

Our newest recruit, Facer, has had his first official article published under the banner of his own name this week. “From the Physio” is our latest regular article where Facer provides a remote assessment of the new injuries that have cropped up in the last week and breaks down exactly what that could mean for player and Fantasy manager alike. We’re certain it’ll fast become on of your new favourite reasons to visit our Fantasy Football compendium.

Our Team News and Injuries & Bans pages have both had the expected thorough updates with all the information from the week on each and every team and player in the league we could glean on your behalf.

Looking Forward

Talking of every team and player in the Premier League, it wouldn’t be build up to another Gameweek without another dose of Frisking The Fixtures and Watchlist Updated articles. Teams and players alike have been ranked as we look at their short to mid-term investment interests. They’re all just commodities.

Given his strong start under the tutelage of Arsene Wenger we felt we had to highlight Santi Cazorla that little bit more and Jonty duly obliged with the words this week. We also welcomed Scout Contributor Stilicho back for his first article of the season with a look at the quiet and unassuming figure of Luis Suarez up at Liverpool…

“In terms of shots on target and chances created over the last two weeks Liverpool are in the Champions League spots, and whilst new acquisition Joe Allen and youth team graduate Raheem Sterling have gelled seamlessly in Rogers’ favoured 4-3-3, the comparatively innocuous exploits of Fabio Borini only serve to cement Suarez’s role as the indispensable spearhead of the Liverpool attack.”

Members Club

The users subscribed to our annual Members program got a triple dose of content this week. Fantasy Managers are currently bending over backwards to get Everton coverage with their form and fixtures colliding into a perfect storm of Fantasy potential. Two key figures of interest, Steven Pienaar and Marouane Fellaini, have been assessed under the microscope of our Opta fuelled stats database in a Versus article for you to run the rule over.

While the spotlight shines on Everton this September the team of the month in August was most definitely Swansea and the beneficiary of nearly all that love was bargain summer signing Michu. We checked in on him with a Monitor article to see exactly how he was doing, after a couple of weeks without returns for the Spaniard.

Rickie Lambert may have the guts and the goals, Adam Lallana may have guile and the captain’s armband while Gaston Ramirez has the price-tag and an abundance flair but the latest in Chris Glover’s Moneyball series takes a peek at the other man currently laying claim to a spot in Southampton’s front four. That would be the rock bottom priced option of 4.4 FPL man Jason Puncheon.

Talking Tactics

In the Technical Area this week Paul set aside just a fraction of his brainpower to look at Roberto Di Matteo’s Chelsea 2.0 and the integration of the new signings Eden Hazard and Oscar together with Juan Mata and Fernando Torres for the first time. The average position of the Blues front four against Stoke was a particularly intriguing quirk to be found. The 40+% of Eden Hazard owners might not need be so worried, either…

“The Belgian was our Captain Poll favourite for Gameweek 5 but lasted just 62 minutes before making way for Victor Moses… A look at his average positions in the first five Gameweeks, however, show that he was actually further forward when on the ball last weekend than in any match so far.”

Our weekly preview over on the Fantasy Premier League site, meanwhile, continues to power ahead at full steam with all the goodies you come to expect from “The Scout” every Thursday. We’ve got our usual five strong band of “Ones to watch” as well as a look at the numbers behind the game and some of the recent tactics on display.

Weekly Regulars

The Scout Selection Committee have painstakingly predicted a whole new team of players to shine this weekend and the end result was the cherry on top of the week known to you and me as The Scout Picks. How many of the squad have you got in your team this Gameweek?

If you are a Fantasy Manager with a penchant for a player more out of left-field maybe you’ve even got a man or two from our Spot The Differential trio.

And, finally, far as your Fantasy captaincy goes -poll to be found in the middle toolbar on the home page- it looks like we have a photo finish on our hands this week. Both Robin Van Persie (home to Spurs) and Leighton Baines (home to Southampton) are duking it out for top spot just a whisker away from each in those polled to date. The dominant Marouane Fellaini (also home to Southampton) and efficient Steven Fletcher (home to Wigan) look set to be the canny alternatives this time round judging by their numbers.

Wenger seems to prefer him right now, but who knows how long that will last... if he maintains some decent form then I don't see why not, but Koscielny's goal against Citeh won't help him any...

Long term, I don't see it, spend the extra for Gibbs or wait until Sagna is back playing...

He said something about using his 4 options upfront.

Clearly Aguero will start. But Tevez after a 120 min stint midweek doesn't look likely imo - even if he starts, expect him to play 60 mins. Scoring at the Cottage isn't going to be easy either.

Verdict: Sell on a FT. But hold otherwise.

Guthrie could play either. Thing is i think Le Fondre is preferred now which could see Guthrie move back to CM.

Nelsen is not nailed on, maybe you should get someone else. Get rid of gunter and get clyne. Get rid of guthrie (poor reading form) and get Puncheon

I think you should get rid of tevez too.

Need your opinions on the moves i made. Early transfer for the week was Lescott>Baines. Got to know yesterday that Berbs was injured for two weeks. So to take my time around the Tevez//Berba issue, i did Guthrie>Sterling, for a hit which gives me

    Begovic
    Baines Rafael Saylor
    Yaya Michu Pienaar Sterling Hazard
    RVP Tevez

    Jussi Gorkss Clyne Berbatov

    Thoughts lads?

Ur armband will decide how ur week goes this gw IMO...
U have a good team but u shudnt have made the hit... Guthrie= minimum 2pts while sterling now means minimum 2-4=-2 pts which means that u've lost 2 pts if sterling flops!

Guthrie was a waste of space and Sterling has 3 great fixtures who allows me to wait out the tevez/Berba lack of match time. Thing is i want to keep Tevez for his good run of fixtures.
But i get why you think its a bad move.

Yeah I don't really get the second transfer either. Don't see how Sterling would, on average, score 4 more points than Guthrie. Why not just do it next week before the two Liverpool home games? FWIW I think Tevez will start this week. Mancini said he 'probably would' and its a bit risky dropping him anyway. He's far better than Dzeko or Balo so City are more likely to win if he plays and also he has been known to kick off when he gets dropped. Tevez is a play every game kinda guy.

Bit too heavy at the back - you'll need more flexibility upfront incase Roo/Kun/Torres hit form, apart from the strong possibility of RVP continuing his goalscoring form.

Also, Fellaini is a no-brainer for a WC team.

if i need one of those all i have to do is downgrade one of bale/caz to guthrie and bring in the forward in form. and for the time being my strategy is to rotate a llot based on fixtures

I know you like the Rafa/Saylor/Cuellar rotation, but two of them have to be benched every week and it's likely to be Saylor and Cuellar, as Baines, Rafa and Gibbs have brilliant fixtures until the Jan WC...

Instead of wasting that extra money in defence, why don't you look for 4m defs, who rotate well and have decent fixtures in GW'S 10,14 15 and 16, since those are the times when the big 3 have tough fixtures...

A quick glance tells me that Nelsen/Clyne gives you RDG NOR AVL RDG in those weeks your big 3 face off against each other... that's a saving 1.6m... I implore you to consider something like this...

Trust me, the extra 1.6m will come in very handy when you really need it most...

There are a few other glitches....i.e. it seems to hang when waited for an opponent on line regularily. Hope they fix it soon.

Lots of people considering taking hits to remove Tevez and/or Berbatov.

Now, I know there are a lot of different view on the merits of taking hits and plenty of stories where it's worked out, but, imo, the only time it is rationally justifiable to take a hit is where you want a player long term and his price is rising so you won't be able to afford him next week. There's an argument for trading points for value early on but I think this is very risky.

4 points can sometimes = thousands of positions in the rankings of this game and, ultimately, it's what matters at the end of the season.

I think people get overly obsessed with the aesthetic of their team or its entertainment value - which is fine, but these aren't the traits of a serious player. A good hit can pay off but probably more rarely than we'd admit - it can also lead to the 'gamblers spiral' where you take crazy risks and even more hits in the belief that they'll pay off eventually.

"If you can keep your head when all around you are losing their's, then you'll be an FPL player my son."

(or, in short, don't sell Tevez or Berbatov for a hit, just play whoever's on your bench 🙂 ).

Good point. I tend to align in that school of thought also. You may have helped answering my following post already.

what if your bench is Kac/Noble/Hughes/bennet?

              That's not a bad bench. There's even 4 of them. 😉

I agree entirely with this thinking. Selling Berb for a hit who is nailed on except for just 2 weeks is silly. Most people got him in as a long term prospect and if you get rid now will you buy him back? Thats 2 transfers wasted imo.

If he's surely out for 10-14 days and miss both Gw6 & 7, I think I will sell him some day over the next Gw. The main reason is I need my FW to play and I also don't want to lose value earned on him when Gw8 will play on 20 Oct. So much time for Berb to lose value.

Agree, thats why I'd sell Berbs too. Points hits are fine, its just a bigger gamble. ie 1x freebie and 4pt hit, means you just need to score 8points or more between them to break even (assuming ur subs play).. 🙂

Thats a silly idea if you think Berb is a good long term prospect.

That's what I will do after Berbatov survived the price drop last night.. I'd welcome Sterling and Rangel from my bench if Tevez doesn't play at all.

            Tool my first hit today--
            Tevez out for podolski !!!

Made the change after reading Mancini s commens- ( 4 strikers + lots of big games coming up in a short time )
Tevez will have the shadow of rotation hanging over him no doubt!

Podolski is starting off a good run of matches with a difficult enough home tie..
He has been really good and as he is also on penalties I think the movie is justified!
I'm giving him the armband today and as an Arsenal fan ( sure why not)
            Cazorla a better capt??

Anyway- that is my justification. I really think tevez will only play a small part of any and podolski may run amok!
My strike force needed a shake up anyway--
            Torres , graham 🙁

Just checked in, amazed at red 'i' on Berb. Spent my 2FT a few days ago bringing Berb and Baines for Torres and Cuellar.

          Current squad:

          Vorm, Begovic
          Rafael, Baines, Clichy, Bertrand, McCartney
          HBA, Yaya, Michu, Pienaar, Guthrie,
          RVP, Tevez, Berb

          Just 2 questions (decision time):

1- Who to captain? RVP or Baines? (Tough decision)
2- Take a hit getting rid of Berb? Can't seem to think he has value long term... If so who to bring in? (Fletch will probably run out of bullets and Lamb may face Vsx fixtures, can't afford Ba)

Probably most discussed topics as of today but really need some expert insight on this.

          Any thoughts appreciated.

I couldn't decide if i should start which DF along with Baines and Jenkinson.

          Rangel? Demel? Gorkss?

Then, I saw QPR v West Ham play on Monday and I have no player in that game. I'm leaning to Demel now. What do you think?

Gorkss seems to be more goal threat and will play at home. But it's Newcastle.
Do you expect attacking or CS points from Gorkss?
