A couple of weeks back our UEFA Champions League coverage kicked off. Unfortunately reports seemed to follow that the updated game platform had its fair share of bumps in the road under its new guise this season -which I somehow managed to miss entirely- but we here at the Scout will soldier on regardless. Resolute and true as always…

SCOUT LEAGUE

We’re happy to see that at least over a thousand European Fantasy managers have decided to join our league ahead of the coming season. We’re not so happy that some of the aforementioned bumps mean that we cannot, as of yet, look at the teams of our rival managers.

jj4eva186 is more than deserving of full praise for being top of the league (and 76th in the world) after the first round. We only wish we could spy on his team to see exactly how he did it! There’s more than a handful of folks clawing at the heels of our early leader with lesegom just a mere 2 points back in second place and Wazza & Gunnervision tied for third another 2 points back.

Seeing as we can’t see everyone’s team I asked my colleague Anorak (32nd in the Scout League) to share a shot of his 74 point strong team to show what a reasonably successful first week looked like. He duly obliged and this screencap is evidence of his Matchday One endeavours. Even with relatively slim seven points from his three midfielders he’s got a healthy start to his European campaign. Good job Anorak, he says through gritted teeth.

If any of you did happen to forget to join our league it is still, of course, open for your entry should you so desire (code: 191091-421065). We’ll sing your praises if you do well and hopefully we’ll be able to see teams sooner rather than later.

MARKET FORCES

Fernando Muslera is the most transferred in goalkeeper this Matchday, with over 1200 Fantasy managers picking up the Galatasaray keeper. The Uruguayan has two back-to-back home clashes with Braga and Cluj up next and priced at 4.5, looks a decent bet for clean sheets. Valencia keeper Diego Alves is next most popular option between the sticks since the end of Matchday 1. He costs the same as Muslera and has a home clash with Lille, followed by two matches against FC Bate Borisov on his agenda to follow.

Thiago Silva leads the way for defenders. Having returned 13 points in Matchday 1, the 6.0 priced PSG man sits second in the overall standings. Real Madrid’s raiding left-back Marcelo is next most popular backline choice – over 3,000 Fantasy managers have snapped up the Brazilian after he produced a double figure points haul in his side’s opening fixture.

Chelsea’s Oscar has picked up the most new suitors overall. The summer signing grabbed a glorious double in the 2-2 draw with Juventus and has persuaded over 5,000 teams to pick him up – priced at 6.5, he’s looking a strong mid-price option for out midfields. Malaga’s Isco is next up. Having returned a 14 point haul in the opener against Zenit St Petersburg, he sits top of the overall leaderboard so far.

Up front, it’s no surprise to see Ronaldo and Lionel Messi the most transferred in forwards in the current Matchday, with the latter now in over 74% of all teams. Lukas Podolski is next most popular, though. The Arsenal man has back-to-back home games against Olympiakos and Schalke to justify his new suitors’ show of faith. Next up is Henrikh Mkhitaryan. We’d highlighted the 5.5 priced Shakhtar Donetsk forward in our “Ones to Watch” for Matchday 1 and he produced the goods with a double against FC Nordsjaelland. We can’t help but notice that he scored, again, in the league at the weekend. The man is one fire this season but with a trip to Juventus and home and away showdowns against defending champions Chelsea to follow, he may struggle to replicate such returns.

Andres Iniesta leads the way for transfers out; perhaps unsurprisingly, given that he’s the priciest midfielder in the game. Over 3,000 Fantasy managers have parted company with the 10.0 priced Barcelona midfielder in the Current Matchday, with Santi Cazorla a distant second for midfielders – nearly 1,500 have sold on the Arsenal playmaker since the Matchday 1 win in Montpellier. United’s injured skipper Nemanja Vidic and Bayern’s sidelined striker Mario Gomez have also been offloaded by plenty – a combined 5,000+ have parted company with the pair.

ONES TO WATCH

Arturo Vidal – we’ve taken just about every window available to mention the Juventus midfielder and ahead of a fixture at home to notoriously poor travellers Shakhtar Donetsk, Vidal’s name was bound to turn up again. Misclassified as a defender (priced at just 5.5) in the game, the penalty taking Chilean is a shoe-in for our ones to watch this Matchday.

Toni Kroos – after a couple of trophyless seasons at the Allianz Arena (last season’s defeat to Chelsea on penalties in the final of this very competition most poignant of them all) Bayern Munich have come out of the traps at full pelt, looking to make amends for this unexpectedly long dry spell. With Kroos, a recipient of much praise this season, inexplicably priced at just 6.5 still he stands out above his team-mates as the one to invest in ahead of Munich’s trip to Belarus to face off with BATE Borisov tomorrow evening.

Isco – Malaga were a club in turmoil off the park this summer and ahead of their first season in the Champions League things weren’t looking good when the likes of Santi Cazorla was sold to Arsenal in order to keep the club solvent. On the pitch, however, the team have somehow managed to go from strength to strength and the jewel in their crown is this up and coming Spanish starlet. After scoring two at home to Zenit last time round, there’s no reason to believe he can’t continue in the same vein as his side travels to Belgium to face off against Anderlecht.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar – now that Raul has moved on to pastures new in Qatar, the Schalke hitman has the mantle of big man on campus all to himself. Though, to be fair to him, following a 2011/12 season which saw the Dutch international notch 44 goals in 47 appearances for his club, there never was really any doubt about that in the first place. The German outfit have a home game against a Montpellier side that are still taking their first baby steps into the world of European competition and Huntelaar looks poised to carry on exactly where he left off last year in this fixture.

Please note that deadline for your UEFA Fantasy Champions League team selection will be at the earlier time of 17:45 CET tomorrow. This is due to Celtic’s trip to Spartak Moscow kicking off earlier than the seven remaining scheduled fixtures.

same done Tevez to Ba as my FT.

Bale in for a hit smells of desperacy to recitfy mistake I made 3GWs ago. Will use this week to decide between Silva and Bale as I dont feel need to 'cover' Chelsea after this weekend.

It depends on my RVP decision. If he's going, i'm keeping Hazard, until he leaves for Silva. If i keep RVP, Hazard will probably leave for Bale. I want to absorb more knoledge before making a potentially season changing decision though! I have 1 week.

I am stubborn as a mule as far as selling RVP (and Cazorla is concerned), I will not do it. So for me, I am going without Aguero and I have to pick between Silva and Bale. Can throw Yaya into the mix up too.

How are finding money for Suarez to Aguero if at all? Or would you sell RVP for Kun

Nope, i have cash already, and Hazard to Bale would fund the rest. Leaving me with the holy RVP Aguero pairing with Caz and Bale as mids 😀

I would need too much surgery to get Aguero now. Got RVP, Ba and Fletcher upfront. Despite having 1.6 ITB, going to have to do it in bits if I want him like Michu and Hazard out.

Looking forward I may go for Silva and hope Bale doesnt rip it up too much vs Sot and WIG as he has City and Arsenal away after then!

Best forward to switch Berbatov out for? Currently also got RVP and Tevez.

Both Crouch and Ba look tempting, but looking at the fixtures, both look better prospects from GW9 onwards.

Suarez? 2 decent home games coming up.

Don't seem to have anything pressing to do with my 2 FTs so i might just swap Clark to Cuellar in readiness for when i need a cheap defender to step in during GW10. Any other ideas?

    Foster | Howard
    Gibbs | Baines | Ivanovic | Clark | Davies
    Hazard | Bale | HBA | Pienaar | Michu
    Berbs | Lambert | Defoe

Planning to put Carzola & Verm in next week (in place of Hazard / Ivan) and Yaya in for Michu the week after.

So far my Bale to Hazard swap ahead of gameweek 4 has cost me 27pts...possibly more as may have captained him for one of those.

Over the last three gameweeks Hazard has 8pts to Bale's 35pts.

Each one of those 27 pts is a tear cascading down my face and into my mouth, where the salty taste of stupidity lingers.

+1. i did the exact same thing, then again bale had not scored in aaages and hazard was raking in the points and his price was going through the roof, its actually more bad luck really that his form has suddenly just disapeared. chin up

Agree... will keep Hazard this week and take my punishment. Far better than drafting in Bale for Haz only for the Chelsea midfielder to rack up a pts haul and rub salt into my already tear soaked salty cheeks.

On the plus side my decision to ditch Graham two weeks ago for Berb (8) followed by Fletch(8) has left me 12 pts up on the deal.

I'm still not convinced about Fellaini, he looks so attacking but is he really that good at finishing if it isn't with his head? Sure he can have loads of shots but when I've watched him his finishing has been suspect at times...

I consider Fellaini to be in the same category as Crouch and Duff - doing well this season, but I consider it more a statistical anomaly rather than proof that they've become top class players.
If they do well for another 4 or 5 weeks then I might reconsider.

You can't argue he's being played more attacking, 7 shots in his last game I think. But it's just...is he going to score a lot of these shots? I can see he's a threat but as you say Fellaini isn't exactly a proven goalscorer.

Could work out but Tevez to Aguero feels like a really sideways move as you'd have the same rotation worries. Differentials can work against you too and you and, in the case of City, I'd be inclined to go with the cheaper option.

Verm for me offers more at both ends of the pitch than Vertongen will.

Stoke are no pushovers, so Suarez isn't guaranteed great returns..

Yes Ramirez has impressed in his last 2 games. I think Lambert and him could prove a great partnership the whole season!
Nolan and Carroll once he is fit could be leathal too!

I have the same question -

Ramirez looks good, has good fixtures but isn't properly tested yet and there are maybe cheaper options in Southampton.
Nolan I think is probably the pick for his goal threat, but I do wonder how many chances WHM will get in their coming fixtures.
Maloney - Good value, good stats until recently - needs to do something soon though.
Morrison, good stats but I'm yet to be convinced, Brunt is probably as good an option.
Swansea, I think you'd have to look at Michu or look away.
I am personally thinking about taking a punt on Walters when his fixtures ease up - OOP, goal threat and great run of fixtures.
If you want to try something really out there, there are only three players that score really highly for Creativity and Threat - Cazorla, Bale and............... Snodgrass! (I'm so tempted to take a punt I can't tell you!)

Ramirez has a similar type of play with Michu, both playing behing the lone striker and with a lot of flair, technique, skills...
At 6, he is a bargain if he continues to score goals. What are the other cheaper options in Southampton that you are talking about?
Is a brunt nailed on? He just costs 0.2 less than Morrison.
I owned Michu but lost faith in him so I think I'd better stay away from Swansea players for good.
I am not convinced in Maloney at all and Snodgrass, Wigan and Norwich seem way too weak.

I am WCarding in fact and currently picking Bale, Mata, Silva, Sterling and then leaning towards Ramirez for the 5th spot.

So Ramirez looks the pick definitely but Puncheon offers great value at 4.4 (3 assists to date).

Brunt is maybe a wait-and-see as he's getting over injury.

If I were WCing right now, I would be very tempted by Ramirez, but I would probably go for Nolan.

    Experts, what would you change?

With only 3 playing defenders, Baines, Gallas, S Taylor (need to transfer out?)
    Or transfer out Berba?

    Pienaar > Sahin
    Ben Arfa > Oscar

    -4pts

    YAY/NAY

They're both long-term targets - but obviously both the out-going players are good, and with good short/mid term fixtures. I.e. I can see me wanting Ben Arfa back at some point...
