A couple of weeks back our UEFA Champions League coverage kicked off. Unfortunately reports seemed to follow that the updated game platform had its fair share of bumps in the road under its new guise this season -which I somehow managed to miss entirely- but we here at the Scout will soldier on regardless. Resolute and true as always…

SCOUT LEAGUE

We’re happy to see that at least over a thousand European Fantasy managers have decided to join our league ahead of the coming season. We’re not so happy that some of the aforementioned bumps mean that we cannot, as of yet, look at the teams of our rival managers.

jj4eva186 is more than deserving of full praise for being top of the league (and 76th in the world) after the first round. We only wish we could spy on his team to see exactly how he did it! There’s more than a handful of folks clawing at the heels of our early leader with lesegom just a mere 2 points back in second place and Wazza & Gunnervision tied for third another 2 points back.

Seeing as we can’t see everyone’s team I asked my colleague Anorak (32nd in the Scout League) to share a shot of his 74 point strong team to show what a reasonably successful first week looked like. He duly obliged and this screencap is evidence of his Matchday One endeavours. Even with relatively slim seven points from his three midfielders he’s got a healthy start to his European campaign. Good job Anorak, he says through gritted teeth.

If any of you did happen to forget to join our league it is still, of course, open for your entry should you so desire (code: 191091-421065). We’ll sing your praises if you do well and hopefully we’ll be able to see teams sooner rather than later.

MARKET FORCES

Fernando Muslera is the most transferred in goalkeeper this Matchday, with over 1200 Fantasy managers picking up the Galatasaray keeper. The Uruguayan has two back-to-back home clashes with Braga and Cluj up next and priced at 4.5, looks a decent bet for clean sheets. Valencia keeper Diego Alves is next most popular option between the sticks since the end of Matchday 1. He costs the same as Muslera and has a home clash with Lille, followed by two matches against FC Bate Borisov on his agenda to follow.

Thiago Silva leads the way for defenders. Having returned 13 points in Matchday 1, the 6.0 priced PSG man sits second in the overall standings. Real Madrid’s raiding left-back Marcelo is next most popular backline choice – over 3,000 Fantasy managers have snapped up the Brazilian after he produced a double figure points haul in his side’s opening fixture.

Chelsea’s Oscar has picked up the most new suitors overall. The summer signing grabbed a glorious double in the 2-2 draw with Juventus and has persuaded over 5,000 teams to pick him up – priced at 6.5, he’s looking a strong mid-price option for out midfields. Malaga’s Isco is next up. Having returned a 14 point haul in the opener against Zenit St Petersburg, he sits top of the overall leaderboard so far.

Up front, it’s no surprise to see Ronaldo and Lionel Messi the most transferred in forwards in the current Matchday, with the latter now in over 74% of all teams. Lukas Podolski is next most popular, though. The Arsenal man has back-to-back home games against Olympiakos and Schalke to justify his new suitors’ show of faith. Next up is Henrikh Mkhitaryan. We’d highlighted the 5.5 priced Shakhtar Donetsk forward in our “Ones to Watch” for Matchday 1 and he produced the goods with a double against FC Nordsjaelland. We can’t help but notice that he scored, again, in the league at the weekend. The man is one fire this season but with a trip to Juventus and home and away showdowns against defending champions Chelsea to follow, he may struggle to replicate such returns.

Andres Iniesta leads the way for transfers out; perhaps unsurprisingly, given that he’s the priciest midfielder in the game. Over 3,000 Fantasy managers have parted company with the 10.0 priced Barcelona midfielder in the Current Matchday, with Santi Cazorla a distant second for midfielders – nearly 1,500 have sold on the Arsenal playmaker since the Matchday 1 win in Montpellier. United’s injured skipper Nemanja Vidic and Bayern’s sidelined striker Mario Gomez have also been offloaded by plenty – a combined 5,000+ have parted company with the pair.

ONES TO WATCH

Arturo Vidal – we’ve taken just about every window available to mention the Juventus midfielder and ahead of a fixture at home to notoriously poor travellers Shakhtar Donetsk, Vidal’s name was bound to turn up again. Misclassified as a defender (priced at just 5.5) in the game, the penalty taking Chilean is a shoe-in for our ones to watch this Matchday.

Toni Kroos – after a couple of trophyless seasons at the Allianz Arena (last season’s defeat to Chelsea on penalties in the final of this very competition most poignant of them all) Bayern Munich have come out of the traps at full pelt, looking to make amends for this unexpectedly long dry spell. With Kroos, a recipient of much praise this season, inexplicably priced at just 6.5 still he stands out above his team-mates as the one to invest in ahead of Munich’s trip to Belarus to face off with BATE Borisov tomorrow evening.

Isco – Malaga were a club in turmoil off the park this summer and ahead of their first season in the Champions League things weren’t looking good when the likes of Santi Cazorla was sold to Arsenal in order to keep the club solvent. On the pitch, however, the team have somehow managed to go from strength to strength and the jewel in their crown is this up and coming Spanish starlet. After scoring two at home to Zenit last time round, there’s no reason to believe he can’t continue in the same vein as his side travels to Belgium to face off against Anderlecht.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar – now that Raul has moved on to pastures new in Qatar, the Schalke hitman has the mantle of big man on campus all to himself. Though, to be fair to him, following a 2011/12 season which saw the Dutch international notch 44 goals in 47 appearances for his club, there never was really any doubt about that in the first place. The German outfit have a home game against a Montpellier side that are still taking their first baby steps into the world of European competition and Huntelaar looks poised to carry on exactly where he left off last year in this fixture.

Please note that deadline for your UEFA Fantasy Champions League team selection will be at the earlier time of 17:45 CET tomorrow. This is due to Celtic’s trip to Spartak Moscow kicking off earlier than the seven remaining scheduled fixtures.

looking at totalfpl it looks like suarez wont rise tonight. is this accurate? fully expected a rise last night but never happened so im a bit surprised about that really or is the market settling down a bit? i hope it does settle cause i could do with seeing the european games first. my transfer in mind is indeed tevez out suarez in. but undecided at the min but dont want to miss a price rise/fall.

he was likely to fall in price before his performance (was at about -70%) - so many transfered needed just to make him positive. saying that, he is likely to rise 0.2 this week.

Hard to look beyond Cazorla, even if I wish his shooting was as good as the rest of his game.

Arsenal suddenly look as uncertain as Man U did at the start of the season - beyond Cazorla its hard to pick who is playing, and where.

In a minute Wenger surely has to give Giroud or Pods a sustained run as striker...surely?

Gervinho's minutes are much more likely to be hampered by Chamberlain and Walcott, than Cazorla's are by e.g. Ramsey.

Not sure about next few gameweeks but season-long Cazorla will way outscore Gervinho IMO.

Having said that, Gervinho is excellent value for money.

On the subject of "hits" whats the general view on places lost when you take a 4 pt hit. I guess it depends on where you are in the league as 4pts will have a bigger impact the lower down the overall league you get. Im around 28,000th and someone about 23,000 places above me I think is 11 points lower so thats a point for every 2000 places.

Any mathematicians out there with some logic we can apply from past experience or is it all too random and graduates too much over time and over the league?

the best way to look at that would be to look at two players with high finishing ranks from a previous season. (say inside top 20k). find the difference of their final rank and final points. If there was 1000 places in rank between them and 50 points diff then you know 1 point will get you 20 places etc.
Approximation I know but it's final rank that matters when wondering what a 4pt hit is worth in ranking not current rank.

Tricky, quite a few options there.

He has also been left out by Argentina for the internationals that follow the next GW, so he will get a nice 2 weeks rest during that as well whereas the other options won't, so he should be good for WBA away too after that.

    Current team for next week:

    Foster
    Baines - Ivanovic - Demel
    Kagawa - Bale - Dyer - Johnson
    RVP - Tevez - Graham

    Henderson
    Noble - Hughes - Cuellar

1FT, 0.5m in the bank. Any ideas on my best transfer move?

I'm thinking of binning Johnson for Pienaar or Gervinho.

No need to wildcard right now, you can turn a decent team out this weekend.

I would personally save the FT this week, and then have 2ft for the next GW, which will be handy as it follows an international break.

That tweet about Scholes, Giggs and Carrick being left out of the CL squad. That could indicate SAF plans to flood the midfield against Newcastle and play all three. That possibly indicates that one of RVP, Rooney and Kag will miss out.

I'm a little nervous now as a RVP and Kag owner. This week's CL line up will be crucial. Whichever of Rooney, RVP or Kag is not playing has a good chance of starting at the weekend.

SAF always plays a strong team against Newcastle but after getting dominated in midfield last season at St James' he may well try to strengthen that area.

To be honest I don't think there will be many weeks where you're likely to be sitting comfortably when the teamsheets come out owning Kagawa and RVP 🙂

I reckon so. The knock he took on the ankle during the Spurs game, Cluj not representing the most difficult opponents (I know I'm tempting fate there after last year) and the importance of bouncing back in next weekend's EPL game... It just feels like RVP will be rested IMO.

With the lack of wide players we have brought (No Valencia, No Young, No Giggs), I fancy Kagawa to be trialled out wide. That or he'll play in behind Rooney with Welbeck out wide.

          All specualtion of course.

I think RVP may be rested against Cluj, Rooney most likely needs game time althought he looks slimmer than I've seen him in a while. My guess would be Kagawa possibly rested at Toon. I own aswell so likewise am a bit worried, no fear of RVP being rested in league tho,, way too important.

Big time, He's not impressed with Nani at the minute but there's nowt else to play wide as Young and Tony V both injured, he is the only width we have. I'd expect a Roo RVP Nani combo with Scholes Carrick Clev for the Toon game.
Cluj game probably Clev/Fletch Roo Nani Wellbeck Chico Kagawa.

            Vs Cluj:

            DDG
            Rafael - Rio - Evans - Buttner
            Fletcher - Anderson - Cleverley
            Nani - Rooney - Welbeck

I own both RVP and Kagawa and am very confident they will play, along with Rooney vs Newcastle.

        Vs Newcastle (assuming fitness)

        Lindy/DDG
        Rafael - Rio - Evans - Evra
        Valencia - Carrick - Scholes - Kagawa
        Rooney
        RVP

After losing to Spurs, SAF will know we need to win at Newcastle to get going again.

Really tempted to WC at the moment. Do you guys think it's worth it?
    Current team:
    Foster (Federici)

    Baines, Lescott, Wilso, Gorkss (Cuellar)

    Hazard, Michu, Pienaar, Sterling (Maloney)

    RVP, Tevez (Berba)

    WC team:
    Foster (Jussi)

Baines, Gibbs, A. Hughes (Wilson, Cuellar)

    Mata, Bale, Gervinho, Fellaini (Sterling)

    Aguero, Ba, Berba/ Fletcher

Worth it? Advice would be much appreciated

possibly worth it, WC team looks good. But don't pull the trigger till the int break for sure!!! A WC over a break is 1 million times more useful than during this week. For value and peace of mind regarding injuries etc

No, keep chugging along. Don't use it as a luxury, use it for a tactical advantage.

Looks great based on current form which is really all we have to go on I suppose, lack of Man Utd might be a bit risky but hard to know where to look to for the points - RVP and Rooney very expensive and Kagawa part of the ongoing rotation nightmare.

      Basically I like it 🙂

No need to spend so much on Verm when you could have Gibbs. Verm is a rotation risk this year and not getting into positions to score at the moment it seems.

I like it! Who needs manchester strikers, right? But presumably you are stearing clearer in order to avoid the rotation headaches? So why get silva?

    Keep Tevez vs > Ba

I can see Tevez outscoring him against SUN, wba, SWA, whu even playing 60 minutes compared to Ba playing MUN, sun, WBA, liv.

    What are your thoughts?

Tevez is still a big rotation risk compared to Ba.

The question is will Tevez get 240 minutes, four starts of 60 minutes, or will he get 140 minutes with only two starts? If I felt sure he was going to start every game I wouldn't think of selling him, probably ever.

Alreet lads. Apparently we are ending our sponsorship deal with Virgin Money at the end of the season, a year early. We've got somebody else lined up. Am I reading to much into this by thinking that this should mean we have a sponsor lined up who will take the stadium naming rights as well as the shirts? It would be great to get rid of those horrible sports direct signs!!

Seems like a decent chance - if there are new stadium sponsors and they have any sense they'll give St James' Park its proper name back. That would generate a lot of goodwill from Newcastle fans!

That would be awesome!! Don't see it happening though. I think naming the stadium the sports direct arena was a genius move. No company would have wanted to have their brand associated with taking away the name St James' Park. But now ashley has taken the flac, so any company coming in to take the naming rights will be known as the saviour, as anyone would be better than sports bloody direct!! Any idea who it might be?

          Agreed (unfortunately!)

Haven't heard anything, it would be nice to see Newcastle Brown Ale or similar back on the shirts but I imagine it will be some massive electrical/sports/insurance company.

          How about Greggs 🙂
