A weekend of drama on and off the pitch in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers finally determined those countries involved in January’s tournament. For Premier League managers and Fantasy managers alike, we can now look ahead to the New Year and assess those players set to be involved, whilst forming strategies to cope with the absentees.

Who will be involved?

Last night we saw Cape Verde Islands spring the biggest surprise, knocking out Cameroon on aggregate to reach the finals for the first time in their history. Ethiopia, Angola, DR Congo, Niger, Burkino Faso and Algeria also joined them in the finals, while Emmanuel Adebayor’s strike for Togo helped them earn passage with a 3-2 aggregate win over Gabon.

With qualifying ties played out on Saturday, the final lineup for January’s tournament now looks like this…

Ghana, Mali, Zambia, Nigeria, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Ethiopia, Cape Verde, Angola, Niger, Togo, DR Congo, Burkina Faso, Algeria. South Africa also qualify as hosts.

In terms of how this impacts on Premier League squads, here’s a breakdown of the first-team players who could be included in the tournament squads…

Arsenal: Emmanuel Frimpong (Ghana), Gervinho (Ivory Coast), Marouane Chamakh (Morocco)

Aston Villa: Karim El Ahmadi (Morocco)

Chelsea: John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses (Nigeria), Bertrand Traore (Burkina Faso)

Everton: Victor Anichebe (Everton)

Fulham: Mahamadou Diarra (Mali)

Liverpool: Oussama Assaidi (Morocco)

Manchester City: Kolo Toure, Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast)

Newcastle United: Cheick Tiote (Ivory Coast)

Queens Park Rangers: Samba Diakite (Mali), Adel Taarabt (Morocco)

Southampton: Emmanuel Mayuka (Zambia)

Tottenham Hotspur: Emmanuel Adebayor (Togo)

West Bromwich Albion: Peter Odemwingie (Nigeria), Youssouf Mulumbu (DR Congo)

West Ham United: Modibo Maiga (Mali), Guy Demel (Ivory Coast)

Wigan Athletic: Arouna Kone (Ivory Coast)

The most notable names in that list in terms of their Fantasy impact are those of Guy Demel, Gervinho and Yaya Toure – all players who have attracted strong investment across the Fantasy games this term. It’s also likely that Cheick Tiote’s possible absence would reduce the appeal of the Newcastle backline.

It’s also worth considering that there will be new call-ups – players who have perhaps yet to earn international recognition who are tempted by involvement in the tournament. Newcastle’s Shola Ameobi is already on the radar for Nigeria, for example.

None of this will bite just yet, although it’s certainly worth keeping their absence in mind when contemplating long-term strategies. In the FPL, we are certain to see price drops for all three players as the savvy begin to sell them on before they are flagged as unavailable.

It’s not all bad news either: the absence of Chelsa pairing Mikel and Victor Moses is set to ease the rotation threat in the Chelsea midfield somewhat and the same can be said of QPR’s midfield with Diakite and Taarabt both likely absentees. Emmanuel Adebayor’s inclusion in the Togo squad would also hand Jermain Defoe an assured run of starts, although that’s ruling out Tottenham acquiring a new striker in January, of course.

Steven Pienaar is a notable absentee from our list, despite being highlighted in the Daily Mail’s article today, the Everton man is very unlikely to play a part for the tournament hosts: he announced his retirement from international football on October 2.

How many Gameweeks will they miss?

The tournament begins in South Africa on January 19, with the final played out on February 10. This means that clubs will likely lose players from their squads from Gameweek 22, with some absent right up until Gameweek 27, although some players will be set to return for Gameweek 26 on February 9.

Some may even return prior the the Gameweek 25 fixtures on February 2 but the chances of them taking part in a Premier League match 48-hours after flying back from the group stages seem minimal.

In reality then, we’re looking at least five Gameweeks out for those involved – unless clubs can seek dispensation to keep their players for Gameweek 22 – one week before the tournament starts.

We’ll offer full confirmation of squads and absentees nearer the time in our ACON coverage.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Mostly because his current production is identical to the first half of last season. I seem to be the only one who sees it around here- But Cisse is playing a tad deeper than Ba- whereas in the first games Cisse was the most forward striker for Newc until Pardew could not stand his lack of form any more and switched them around. Unless Pardew makes changes in Bas position again I will remain bullish on his outlook.
            I could be wrong though.

Good to see a City fan with Tevez. Do you think that will stay like that for the foreseeable, or are you tempted with Silva/Aguero instead?

      A) seems very popular around here, but in a gameweek after internationals, B) might be sensible.

Ye I've kept hold because hes not gone to Argentina which is a good sign that he'll start on Sat.

I am keeping a close eye on him though, both form and minutes/rotation are a big threat to him and for what it's worth I think he'll get as much Prem game time as Aguero around these Champs League fixtures

Yeah, that's pretty much my thinking. The other thought being that value for money, if he is starting - there aren't very many better prospects pound for pound. So think I'll keep short-term, but looking at shifting him to Aguero eventually.

Yes same for me, started with Aguero but then got injured.

Tevez would be an even better pick than he is already if it wasn't for the emergence of Edin Dzeko. Mancini isnt his biggest fan but he can't ignore him when he's getting goals and there's Mario.......

Ba is definitely the man in form at the moment. By the looks of it, if Pardiola wants to keep him happy he will keep playing him up front. On current form, if we switch to a 4-3-3, it will be cisse who misses out, rather than ba moving to the left.

Yep, just not really a support player.
Interesting that everyone here seems to think Everton's attack revolves around Jelavic though. Fellaini and Mirallas pretty much shoot when they want. Although Pienaar/Baines set it up in a platter for him quite often.

Everton are just on fire currently, taking more shots than any team in the PL. So there are plently to go around, no reason Jelly and Mirallas both cant be decent. Fellaini will drop off though IMO.

I never said they wouldn't be decent. Just that I have seen plenty of people suggest Jelavic over *insert name here* because he has less competition for goals etc.

Got lost on the last post.

The injuries I have are doing my head in. I’ve got two frees and 0.6 in the bank. I have Fellaini, Gibbs Ridgewell Saylor and Demel all injured. Should I expect anyone to be back by this weekend orr hold off on any one? Right now I have only one fit defender (Baines) ,and I would like to field 11 this coming week.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

With those two back, I can at least field a full back line. Tempted to sit tight on all 5 of my injured players and use a transfer elsewhere because I don't really want to get rid of any of these players and all the injuries seem to be relatively short term.

Hi hombres, I have 2 transfers to make this week and below is my team:

    Begovic, Jaaskelainen
    Baines, Hughes, Cuellar, Clark, Nelsen
Hazard, Cazorla, Ben Arfa, Dyer, Maloney
    van Persie, Suarez, Lambert

    Looking at:
    Hazard, Lambert -> Bale, Berbatov

Good move? What would you do?

I feel that Hazard > Bale is a forwards move, maybe even Silva, it's a toss-up but I feel Bale is more involved despite Silva being in a better team.

Dyer is someone I'm looking to get rid of too, probably for Walters the following week.

I have two free transfers, so really I want to use them because there's a few dodgy players in there that could be replaced with better ones.

Liverpool have some very tasty home games coming up. I'm thinking it would be stupid not to include Sterling for fellaini as my rotation plan means he would only play in those home games. Means I can upgrade Demel to Kolarov πŸ˜‰ and get Jelavic or Ba rather than Berba.

I know Sterling hasn't scored well up to now, but he appears to be nailed on, in an improving liverpool team playing very attacking footy. Its only a matter of time. Right?

Sterling looks to me like Walcott from a couple of seasons ago, all pace and running past defenders just to find the side netting or row Z.
I agree Liverpool look to have a good run. I'll go for expensive there and cheap somewhere else.

              Wigan away (won 1-0)
              Tottenham home (won 3-2)
              Everton away (lost 1-0)
              Fulham home (won 3-0)
              Villa away (won 1-0)

Interesting as it's either Berba or Aguero in for Tevez for me at some point, and I was leaning toward Aguero in a big way.

I just think you'll be confident of goals from Aguero at any ground in the country, whereas they'll be nagging doubts with Berbatov at away games vs the Top 10 or so - surely? Not so much doubts about him, but doubts about Fulham having enough possession.

I think the thing for me might be to: Tevez > Berbatov > Aguero

Making sure to ride each for the optimum period of time! Which is so easy of course....

I wonder why United got RVP instead of one or two central midfielders?

Surely Rooney has another few years in him as a striker and while he was crap apart from sticking it in the net last year, same can be said for allot of the united side who I can't remember putting in a really good 90 minute performance since, early last season?

Seems obvious to me and most others the big problem lies in the central midfield, Carrick is pretty good, Scholes can do a job in certain situations when United are on the front foot and Clev is the big hope. Flecther is a risk.Rest are write off's.

The money would have being better off spent on a Dembele for example and pocket the rest. Let Kag play the Cam role, with Cleverly getting some game time there and then Dembele and Carrick to interchange positions (Dm, CM) as they are pretty versatile.

I know we all have man love for RVP, but imo he was not really necessary..

Thinking of wildcarding..any useful advice on improving overall would be appreciated please.

    BEG/JUSSI (rotate really well)

DEMEL/HUGHES/WILLIAMSON/NELSON/BARNETT (poor/cheap defence but I know, but you can't have it all)

    CAZORALA/BALE/HAZARD/PIENAAR/STERLING

RVP/TEVEZ/BERB (.3 IN BANK FOR LAST MIN CHANGES DUE TO INJURIES ETC)

      1st advice - don't post in Caps.
2nd advice - downgrade Hazard to a Walters/Maloney etc and upgrade 3 of your defenders.
