A weekend of drama on and off the pitch in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers finally determined those countries involved in January’s tournament. For Premier League managers and Fantasy managers alike, we can now look ahead to the New Year and assess those players set to be involved, whilst forming strategies to cope with the absentees.

Who will be involved?

Last night we saw Cape Verde Islands spring the biggest surprise, knocking out Cameroon on aggregate to reach the finals for the first time in their history. Ethiopia, Angola, DR Congo, Niger, Burkino Faso and Algeria also joined them in the finals, while Emmanuel Adebayor’s strike for Togo helped them earn passage with a 3-2 aggregate win over Gabon.

With qualifying ties played out on Saturday, the final lineup for January’s tournament now looks like this…

Ghana, Mali, Zambia, Nigeria, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Ethiopia, Cape Verde, Angola, Niger, Togo, DR Congo, Burkina Faso, Algeria. South Africa also qualify as hosts.

In terms of how this impacts on Premier League squads, here’s a breakdown of the first-team players who could be included in the tournament squads…

Arsenal: Emmanuel Frimpong (Ghana), Gervinho (Ivory Coast), Marouane Chamakh (Morocco)

Aston Villa: Karim El Ahmadi (Morocco)

Chelsea: John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses (Nigeria), Bertrand Traore (Burkina Faso)

Everton: Victor Anichebe (Everton)

Fulham: Mahamadou Diarra (Mali)

Liverpool: Oussama Assaidi (Morocco)

Manchester City: Kolo Toure, Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast)

Newcastle United: Cheick Tiote (Ivory Coast)

Queens Park Rangers: Samba Diakite (Mali), Adel Taarabt (Morocco)

Southampton: Emmanuel Mayuka (Zambia)

Tottenham Hotspur: Emmanuel Adebayor (Togo)

West Bromwich Albion: Peter Odemwingie (Nigeria), Youssouf Mulumbu (DR Congo)

West Ham United: Modibo Maiga (Mali), Guy Demel (Ivory Coast)

Wigan Athletic: Arouna Kone (Ivory Coast)

The most notable names in that list in terms of their Fantasy impact are those of Guy Demel, Gervinho and Yaya Toure – all players who have attracted strong investment across the Fantasy games this term. It’s also likely that Cheick Tiote’s possible absence would reduce the appeal of the Newcastle backline.

It’s also worth considering that there will be new call-ups – players who have perhaps yet to earn international recognition who are tempted by involvement in the tournament. Newcastle’s Shola Ameobi is already on the radar for Nigeria, for example.

None of this will bite just yet, although it’s certainly worth keeping their absence in mind when contemplating long-term strategies. In the FPL, we are certain to see price drops for all three players as the savvy begin to sell them on before they are flagged as unavailable.

It’s not all bad news either: the absence of Chelsa pairing Mikel and Victor Moses is set to ease the rotation threat in the Chelsea midfield somewhat and the same can be said of QPR’s midfield with Diakite and Taarabt both likely absentees. Emmanuel Adebayor’s inclusion in the Togo squad would also hand Jermain Defoe an assured run of starts, although that’s ruling out Tottenham acquiring a new striker in January, of course.

Steven Pienaar is a notable absentee from our list, despite being highlighted in the Daily Mail’s article today, the Everton man is very unlikely to play a part for the tournament hosts: he announced his retirement from international football on October 2.

How many Gameweeks will they miss?

The tournament begins in South Africa on January 19, with the final played out on February 10. This means that clubs will likely lose players from their squads from Gameweek 22, with some absent right up until Gameweek 27, although some players will be set to return for Gameweek 26 on February 9.

Some may even return prior the the Gameweek 25 fixtures on February 2 but the chances of them taking part in a Premier League match 48-hours after flying back from the group stages seem minimal.

In reality then, we’re looking at least five Gameweeks out for those involved – unless clubs can seek dispensation to keep their players for Gameweek 22 – one week before the tournament starts.

We’ll offer full confirmation of squads and absentees nearer the time in our ACON coverage.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

          i was thinking a 4 4 2

          Jaas

          hang, vert, baines, jenkinson

          hazard, duff, michu, pienaar,

          Ba Tevez

          cech, Defoe, maloney, cuellar

I see this being a 2-1 game that could go either way, depending on what tottenham side show up

That Brian post got me thinking, IF Van Persie had stayed at Arsenal and United bought Dembele instead, which would you prefer (please try to be unbiased)
    United;
    Dembele Carrick/Scholes
    Valencia Kagawa Young/Nani
    Rooney

    (or some other lineup?)

    or

    Van Persie
    Podolski Cazorla Gervinho/Walcott

Imagine if United had spent the RVP money (and a lil bit more..) on Arteta last season and Dembele this season. Forget Kagawa

              Carrick, Arteta

              Dembele

With Arteta and Dembele interchangeable for that Cam spot and Clev+Scholes to get the odd came.

Lots of passing ability and solid out and out CM's in there. Can't see that midfield being overrun too often.

As a Liverpool fan, id take him. Not a top, top winger. But he has goals in him (unlike Valencia) and is not the worst assist-er. Gets too much flack at times.

Can interchange with the striker as well, in a flexible system. Say at times Suarez switching to the right and Walcott going inside.

      that's a REALLY close call.

      RvP = Roon
      Val > Pod
      Caz > Kag
      Gerv/Walcott = Young/Nani (all talent, no consistency)
      Dembele > Arteta
      Carrick/Scholes = Diaby

I'd perhaps lean ManU, just on account of their superior experience, but that's splitting hairs.

im a united fan and tbh im tired of united's central midfield getting over run by average teams. fergie needs to stop being stubborn and invest in a world class central midfielder.

then maybe then can we dominate in europe again and not get over run at home by teams like benfica and co.

Bench is a horror show, I know. Apart from having the luxury of a City player, I have pretty much all the other players I think will score big over the coming weeks. If I pull the plug on RVP I can invest in defence/bench if necessary. What do you think?

I'm sticking with RVP whilst looking to bring in Ba (for Lambert) and Wilson (for Cole) next week, leaving me with a similar set-up to you. Personally I prefer Hazard over Mata, Pienaar over Noble and Tevez over Berba, but you'll have Bale instead of Michu... to summarise: keep RVP

Would love some opinions of the regulars here!
    Team is:
    Foster Begovic
    Baines Gibbs Nelsen Gorks Davies
    HBA Fellaini Cazorla Nolan Puncheon
    RVP Aguero Fletcher

    If i do Fellaini ---> 5m mid(Sterling) this week,
I can do Fletcher —-> Ba & HBA —–> Bale next week.

Does it makes sense or are there any obvious weaknesses that I cannot see?

This should be added to a weekly FAQ at this point.

Nolan for next two, Morrison the two after that.

Overall, with fixtures in the long term, Morrison probably just shades it. Best to find someone like Maloney to rotate with Morrison though.

tough call. we have a very solid midfield now. possibly while Vaz Te is out he could take the left wing spot or be rotated with Taylor. Otherwise I just see him being rotation/sub material. he is quality but so is everyone in our midfield now. Noble, Nolan and Diame are all untouchable atm so he might only get gametime as a sub or when they're rested.

    OUT - Ivanovic & Graham
    IN - Wilson & Ba

Worth a -4 hit? I know Ivanovic has been on hot form, but fixtures take a dip now, plus they miss a GW in December, and I desperately need the cash raised to upgrade Graham (I'm not even convinced he'll start this week).

Even if it didn't pay off this week, I can easily see -4 being worth it over the next few.

Other option would be to Johnson & Graham to Morrison & Berbatov, but I'm not convinced on their fixtures either.

    Cheers gents!

Maybe Ivan > Wilson this week and Graham > Ba next? Saves the 4, while Grahams fixture is better than Ba's this week and gives you a chance to watch Berba too and decide then

The moves in question would give me exactly the right money, so I could sit tight and save the points this week and do it on Saturday night for no hit, providing the prices of all 4 of them don't move this GW.

Will have to monitor the markets!

I wouldn't take that hit this week. How about doing it for free next week? Yeah, there's a risk Graham doesn't start this week, but you're in pretty deep with him already - I think I'd ride this week out if possible.

Thanks - next week is an option for sure, so long as prices don't fluctuate unfavourably. I suspect if I manage to ride it out this week I would have to make the moves on Saturday night or Sunday latest to have the right cash as I expect both Ba and Wilson to get some serious interest once this GW is over.

          Yeah perhaps.

I think it'll be back end of next week that people pick up on Wilson, personally and if Ba doesn't score, his price shouldn't be too bad.

Can see why Graham is such a frustration but as long as you've got a sub who's playing this week, I'd find it hard to justify the above points hit with Ba away to a Sunderland side who are fairly solid at home. That said, I hope I'm wrong and Ba bags a brace πŸ™‚

Cant wait to get Defoe and Boselli in when Ade and Kone piss off.

But shall have to sell Giroud as the loss of Frimpers will be devastating to the moral.

Already have. Lateriser is running the risk of losing control of his bandwagon with his lack of commitment to the cause.

I am considering starting this one, purely for the name.

      I'll tell you Saturday evening..

Id have to say, B looks the more attractive option based on Consistency and value for money.

But if Suarez comes good on Saturday, he will be hard to drop.

Bale. more goal-scoring potential and less likelihood to get rotated.

Bale if you want dynamic but inconsistent returns.
Silva if you want 5-6 pointers on a consistent basis.

On current form and stats, Bale carries the more threat and looks the real deal.

Silva is also a very good option and should start scoring well soon.

Id back Bale, marginally as he carries the better goal threat and thus Baps+armband potential.

I got the same dilemma for next week. Im Quietly leanig towards bale since I already got Tevez, otherwise id be tempted by silva since I think he is due some points.

      Bale;
      - He is a better FPL player (scores more goals, gets a fair share of assists, *could* even be on penalties although that's not a reason to buy him)
      - 100% nailed on every week, Silva is not.
      - Plays in a team where he has less 'competition' for points, he's normally involved in their attacks, Silva not so much with Nasri/Tevez/Aguero/Yaya there.
      - Selfish, takes loads more shots rather than trying to set up team mates for attacks (assisting the assister as they say)

Nice ones especially the Portugal handicap(Ronaldo will get the goals himself if needed for his 100th cap)
Most risky is the Italy vs Denmark IMO, but should be fine.

With Levein in charge we can need something all we want but I don't think that means all that much. We needed to avoid defeat in Wales but that never got us very far. Belgium have too much quality for us. I don't mind us going forward but we look very suspect at defending.

Michu or HBA for this coming week?

On my WC and have HBA in atm but Michu at home to Wigan seems a lot more tempting than HBA away to Sunderland. This would also allow me to make the swap for GW9 when Swansea are away to City and Newcastle are home to WBA.
