A weekend of drama on and off the pitch in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers finally determined those countries involved in Januaryโ€™s tournament. For Premier League managers and Fantasy managers alike, we can now look ahead to the New Year and assess those players set to be involved, whilst forming strategies to cope with the absentees.

Who will be involved?

Last night we saw Cape Verde Islands spring the biggest surprise, knocking out Cameroon on aggregate to reach the finals for the first time in their history. Ethiopia, Angola, DR Congo, Niger, Burkino Faso and Algeria also joined them in the finals, while Emmanuel Adebayorโ€™s strike for Togo helped them earn passage with a 3-2 aggregate win over Gabon.

With qualifying ties played out on Saturday, the final lineup for Januaryโ€™s tournament now looks like thisโ€ฆ

Ghana, Mali, Zambia, Nigeria, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Ethiopia, Cape Verde, Angola, Niger, Togo, DR Congo, Burkina Faso, Algeria. South Africa also qualify as hosts.

In terms of how this impacts on Premier League squads, hereโ€™s a breakdown of the first-team players who could be included in the tournament squadsโ€ฆ

Arsenal: Emmanuel Frimpong (Ghana), Gervinho (Ivory Coast), Marouane Chamakh (Morocco)

Aston Villa: Karim El Ahmadi (Morocco)

Chelsea: John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses (Nigeria), Bertrand Traore (Burkina Faso)

Everton: Victor Anichebe (Everton)

Fulham: Mahamadou Diarra (Mali)

Liverpool: Oussama Assaidi (Morocco)

Manchester City: Kolo Toure, Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast)

Newcastle United: Cheick Tiote (Ivory Coast)

Queens Park Rangers: Samba Diakite (Mali), Adel Taarabt (Morocco)

Southampton: Emmanuel Mayuka (Zambia)

Tottenham Hotspur: Emmanuel Adebayor (Togo)

West Bromwich Albion: Peter Odemwingie (Nigeria), Youssouf Mulumbu (DR Congo)

West Ham United: Modibo Maiga (Mali), Guy Demel (Ivory Coast)

Wigan Athletic: Arouna Kone (Ivory Coast)

The most notable names in that list in terms of their Fantasy impact are those of Guy Demel, Gervinho and Yaya Toure โ€“ all players who have attracted strong investment across the Fantasy games this term. It’s also likely that Cheick Tioteโ€™s possible absence would reduce the appeal of the Newcastle backline.

It’s also worth considering that there will be new call-ups – players who have perhaps yet to earn international recognition who are tempted by involvement in the tournament. Newcastle’s Shola Ameobi is already on the radar for Nigeria, for example.

None of this will bite just yet, although itโ€™s certainly worth keeping their absence in mind when contemplating long-term strategies. In the FPL, we are certain to see price drops for all three players as the savvy begin to sell them on before they are flagged as unavailable.

Itโ€™s not all bad news either: the absence of Chelsa pairing Mikel and Victor Moses is set to ease the rotation threat in the Chelsea midfield somewhat and the same can be said of QPRโ€™s midfield with Diakite and Taarabt both likely absentees. Emmanuel Adebayorโ€™s inclusion in the Togo squad would also hand Jermain Defoe an assured run of starts, although thatโ€™s ruling out Tottenham acquiring a new striker in January, of course.

Steven Pienaar is a notable absentee from our list, despite being highlighted in the Daily Mailโ€™s article today, the Everton man is very unlikely to play a part for the tournament hosts: he announced his retirement from international football on October 2.

How many Gameweeks will they miss?

The tournament begins in South Africa on January 19, with the final played out on February 10. This means that clubs will likely lose players from their squads from Gameweek 22, with some absent right up until Gameweek 27, although some players will be set to return for Gameweek 26 on February 9.

Some may even return prior the the Gameweek 25 fixtures on February 2 but the chances of them taking part in a Premier League match 48-hours after flying back from the group stages seem minimal.

In reality then, weโ€™re looking at least five Gameweeks out for those involved โ€“ unless clubs can seek dispensation to keep their players for Gameweek 22 โ€“ one week before the tournament starts.

Weโ€™ll offer full confirmation of squads and absentees nearer the time in our ACON coverage.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

        quite right.

only one i dont quite like is Nolan in the longterm, but someone else near his value might come around by then.

also, is Sagna going to be back this next GW?

Nolan for his next two then out for the next big (cheap) thing.

Not too worried if Sagna isn't back yet. I'll just get play him and see what happens. Don't want to waste an FT on a DEF later on.

            Foster, Bego
            Baines, Rafael, Dmeel, Davies, Gorks
            Cazorla, Bale, Fellaini, Ramirez, Sterling
            RVP, Aguero, Berbatov

            Thinking

            Ramirez > Puncheon
            Then with money freed up

    Ivanovic - Cuellar - Clyne - Zabaleta - Demel
    Bale - Hazard - Noble - Maloney - Gervinho
    Ba - Torres - Tevez

    bank: 1.3 mln

    Begovic, Jaaskelainen
    Baines, Hughes, Cuellar, Clark, Nelsen
Hazard, Cazorla, Ben Arfa, Dyer, Maloney
    van Persie, Suarez, Lambert

2 free transfers; thinking Hazard and Lambert -> Bale / Silva and Berbatov

    Dear RVP owners.

If your a big spender and looking for a safe haven for the armband, I have one word for you.

    Aguero.

It used to be RVP had the guarantee of more minutes and set pieces.

Not anymore, so I can't see anyway to justify the extra 2.3m. A red jersey is not worth that much.

Some may say RVP is the only Man U coverage that is viable, I say at his current price and output, sod that, ill go Blue and take my chances.

(Disclaimer, Aguero is a risk at the moment due to rotation as well, but a 2.3m cheaper one. If he continues to be rotated, we might have to write off the whole United and City forward lines. Bummer)

I think it's fair to say Aguero is the main man at City and will get the most minutes of the forwards there. So while I certainly think Tevez is good value, he will get less minutes and is not as good as Aguero.

Not a bad option, but if you were looking for "safety" of Captaincy, Aguero would be the man.

They are both capable of getting points and rotate as follows:

RDG, WHM, NEW, WBA, WIG, RDG, x, SOT, QPR, AVL, FUL

over the next 11 gameweeks. The x is the only problem week (MCI, tot).

        Not bad, eh?

I am finding it unexpectedly difficult to do Tevez->Berbs, and Fellaini->Cazorla this week......Just feel Tevez could do really well in the next 4 gws. Yes, I know I'm talking about Tevez, not Aguero....

I totally understand what you mean. Getting rid of Tevez is difficult. I mean, i could not get rid, not even for Giroud.

Was watching Port Vale, but it's a bit drab tbh.

Anyway, what are people's latest thoughts on Fellaini's positioning?

Think hairbears injury was a muscle tear or something similar/ think he will move in jan window
I think even when he comes back he will play deeper than when he's had his best games.

Love to watch him but my gut says he's due a haircut!
