A weekend of drama on and off the pitch in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers finally determined those countries involved in Januaryโ€™s tournament. For Premier League managers and Fantasy managers alike, we can now look ahead to the New Year and assess those players set to be involved, whilst forming strategies to cope with the absentees.

Who will be involved?

Last night we saw Cape Verde Islands spring the biggest surprise, knocking out Cameroon on aggregate to reach the finals for the first time in their history. Ethiopia, Angola, DR Congo, Niger, Burkino Faso and Algeria also joined them in the finals, while Emmanuel Adebayorโ€™s strike for Togo helped them earn passage with a 3-2 aggregate win over Gabon.

With qualifying ties played out on Saturday, the final lineup for Januaryโ€™s tournament now looks like thisโ€ฆ

Ghana, Mali, Zambia, Nigeria, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Ethiopia, Cape Verde, Angola, Niger, Togo, DR Congo, Burkina Faso, Algeria. South Africa also qualify as hosts.

In terms of how this impacts on Premier League squads, hereโ€™s a breakdown of the first-team players who could be included in the tournament squadsโ€ฆ

Arsenal: Emmanuel Frimpong (Ghana), Gervinho (Ivory Coast), Marouane Chamakh (Morocco)

Aston Villa: Karim El Ahmadi (Morocco)

Chelsea: John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses (Nigeria), Bertrand Traore (Burkina Faso)

Everton: Victor Anichebe (Everton)

Fulham: Mahamadou Diarra (Mali)

Liverpool: Oussama Assaidi (Morocco)

Manchester City: Kolo Toure, Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast)

Newcastle United: Cheick Tiote (Ivory Coast)

Queens Park Rangers: Samba Diakite (Mali), Adel Taarabt (Morocco)

Southampton: Emmanuel Mayuka (Zambia)

Tottenham Hotspur: Emmanuel Adebayor (Togo)

West Bromwich Albion: Peter Odemwingie (Nigeria), Youssouf Mulumbu (DR Congo)

West Ham United: Modibo Maiga (Mali), Guy Demel (Ivory Coast)

Wigan Athletic: Arouna Kone (Ivory Coast)

The most notable names in that list in terms of their Fantasy impact are those of Guy Demel, Gervinho and Yaya Toure โ€“ all players who have attracted strong investment across the Fantasy games this term. It’s also likely that Cheick Tioteโ€™s possible absence would reduce the appeal of the Newcastle backline.

It’s also worth considering that there will be new call-ups – players who have perhaps yet to earn international recognition who are tempted by involvement in the tournament. Newcastle’s Shola Ameobi is already on the radar for Nigeria, for example.

None of this will bite just yet, although itโ€™s certainly worth keeping their absence in mind when contemplating long-term strategies. In the FPL, we are certain to see price drops for all three players as the savvy begin to sell them on before they are flagged as unavailable.

Itโ€™s not all bad news either: the absence of Chelsa pairing Mikel and Victor Moses is set to ease the rotation threat in the Chelsea midfield somewhat and the same can be said of QPRโ€™s midfield with Diakite and Taarabt both likely absentees. Emmanuel Adebayorโ€™s inclusion in the Togo squad would also hand Jermain Defoe an assured run of starts, although thatโ€™s ruling out Tottenham acquiring a new striker in January, of course.

Steven Pienaar is a notable absentee from our list, despite being highlighted in the Daily Mailโ€™s article today, the Everton man is very unlikely to play a part for the tournament hosts: he announced his retirement from international football on October 2.

How many Gameweeks will they miss?

The tournament begins in South Africa on January 19, with the final played out on February 10. This means that clubs will likely lose players from their squads from Gameweek 22, with some absent right up until Gameweek 27, although some players will be set to return for Gameweek 26 on February 9.

Some may even return prior the the Gameweek 25 fixtures on February 2 but the chances of them taking part in a Premier League match 48-hours after flying back from the group stages seem minimal.

In reality then, weโ€™re looking at least five Gameweeks out for those involved โ€“ unless clubs can seek dispensation to keep their players for Gameweek 22 โ€“ one week before the tournament starts.

Weโ€™ll offer full confirmation of squads and absentees nearer the time in our ACON coverage.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      Well here's my current team:

      Vorm (Ruddy)
      Ivanovic Vermaelen Baines (Demel, McCartney)
      Cazorla Hazard Michu Pienaar Morrison
      Tevez Ba (Di Santo)

Have 2FT. 0.1 in the bank. Thinking to upgrade Di Santo to Berba and downgrade Ivanovic/Verma to Wilson.

      Any thoughts?

      Yes.

Ba has to be Lambert and at least have a 4.5DEF in there. Both Sterling and Puncheon is unsustainable as Nolan's fixtures soon turn to piss

Would have to do Fellaini ----> Sterling this week,
Fletcher----> Ba & HBA ----> Bale next week.

Ba has amazing fixtures & will be scoring for fun imo. Bale also has sot WIG, which looks too good to pass up. Will play Sterling/Puncheon for their home games as the 4th mid.

Maybe try to squeeze in a 4.5m def there somehow!

Evening all, I'd be grateful for some feedback on my WC team. Current team in link. Plenty of time to tinker some more, thinking maybe I need to swap out one of baines or ivanovic to balance defence a bit.

    Jassk, bego
    Nelsen Baines Ivanovic Clyne Fonte
    Cazorla Mata Routledge Sterling Bale
    aguero Suarez Jelavic

After this week probably Suarez to ba and then upgrade one of Clyne or Fonte. Any advice/comments would be appreciated.

Suarez’s stats are crazy and are remarkably higher than any of his peers on almost every category. He’s has the same number of touches inside the box (77) as Robin Van Persie (37) and Demba Ba (40) combined, while his 40 goal attempts is the sum total offered by a Van Persie (18) and Carlos Tevez (22) pairing. Suarez has managed more efforts on target than any forward so far and in terms of minutes per chance, is just edged into second by Defoe.

Suarez is a stat freak. He is always super high ranked in the ICT because he has so many efforts on goal and creates plenty for others. Can't really argue with that but certainly his conversion rate of shots to goals reveals why he doesn't convert that into returns. As I've said so often, he is probably the most frustrating player in the league for all kinds of reasons.

I think he is a great option but I think fixtured do matter, since we really dont know how chelsea will play against good teams. Only 1-0 vs Stoke at the death and 2 lucky goals vs Arsenal showed that.
I also think RDM will use lampard instead of him agianst weaker teams along with Moses or Marin/Bertrand, so he will be rotated for the games when you expect points. I think there is a need to observe his situation for a while longer.

Approve of the transfers. Your defence is too expensive for my taste. Ivan and Skrtle can be traded to 4-4.5m players with the money spent on a big hitter in midfield and/or RVP.

It is kind of free, dropping very deep but sometimes playing as striker. He needs to have Pen duty to be worth investment.

Wonder if he'll need to drop deep when they have a few players back from injury. Agree penalties would make all the difference.

the worry with both him and RVP could be that Fergie will start rotating between them- especially for the easy games.

At that's a fair point. Might just get Aguero, rotation risk I know, as big striker.

He's been playing at the tip of a midfield diamond, but not sure we'll stick with that formation once our wingers are fit again - Valencia and Young have been injured, and Nani out of form / favour.

In order to do Felliani to Cazorla I have just two options:

    1. Rvp to Aguero

    2. Rvp to Suarez

Please note that these are the only options which I'm willing to make in my team and that I have Tevez. Having Aguero and Tevez up front with City's fixtures could prove to be explosive.

I would say RVP to Suarez if you already got Tevez... Both Aguero and Tevez will not play in every match and will not score in every match if they do...

While I disagree, some would say Yaya is a big hitting mid. In any case, he is only around 1m less than the likes of Mata and Bale so its not too difficult to upgrade him.

Not having a cheap 5th mid makes it difficult as well - Ramirez out since he's injured for Sterling/Puncheon.

Cole can go for someone cheaper as well, maybe Sagna in a week or two or Saylor.
