After a hugely disappointing second half of the 2011/12 campaign, Fantasy managers were understandably wary over the merits of Jon Walters heading into the new season. The Stoke man surged out the blocks last term before falling dramatically as a Fantasy prospect, after finding the net in just one match – the Gameweek 38 home draw with Bolton – since the turn of the year.

The Potters’ opening fixtures made it easy to overlook the vast majority of their players, too. Games against Arsenal, City, Chelsea and Liverpool in their opening seven is set to be followed by a trip to Old Trafford next weekend – hardly the type of schedule to entice the savvy Fantasy manager.

Tony Pulis’ tactics also dimmed Walters’ appeal as an out of position prospect in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Classified as a midfielder yet typically fielded as Peter Crouch’s strike partner in a default 4-4-2, Walters has been shuffled out to the right wing on occasion as Stoke’s tricky run of opponents have resulted in a more defensive 4-5-1 formation at times.

While the Stoke defence have excelled thus far, with just five goals conceded, and Crouch has chipped in with four goals and an assist, Walters has remained somewhat under the radar – despite offering clear signs of his potential. To date, the Republic of Ireland international has played a part in four of his side’s six goals, with a converted spot-kick and a trio of assists helping him rack up 32 FPL points; this is the same tally as Gervinho and Nathan Dyer, for example, and just three points behind Marouane Fellaini, Kevin Nolan and Hatem Ben Arfa.

Once they get the United game out of the way, Stoke’s fixtures suggest their Fantasy assets will be afforded the platform to offer prosperous returns. As the difficulty level eases a touch, Pulis is expected to roll out a 4-4-2 once again – while they’ve lost just once in their opening seven Gameweeks, a single victory, at home to Swansea, underlines a definite requirement for greater emphasis on attack.

Priced at 6.4 in FPL, Walters’ midfield classification is far more enticing than in the Sky Sports game, where he’s listed as a 7.9 priced forward. Factor in his penalty duties and a run of games that see him welcome (SUN, QPR, FUL, NEW) to the Britannia from Gameweek 9-14, in addition to trips to Norwich and West Ham, and Walters looks a viable contender for our five-man midfields, with a mere 6% ownership only furthering his appeal as a strong differential to consider.

How many goals from defenders have you guys had in your 11 so far this season? From memory, I think I've had 6 in 7 GWs which is pretty damn good!

    Think I've had Ivan 2, Baines 2, Rafa 1 and Clyne 1 🙂

If i cant think of something clever to do, this it mean i need to save my transfer?

    Foster (begovich)
    baines Vertonghen Jenkinson (mcually, demel)
    Bale, michu, santi, hazard, (morrison)
    Suarez, ba, lambert

Was thinking hazard to silva, but WBA away is not exactly a tasty fxture for silva.
can do hazard to piennar and next week suarez to aguero, or just save transfer and then next week do
hazard+ suarez to walters + aguero.

    thoughts?

    Demel Baines Saylor
    HBA Michu Cazorla Hazard
    Defoe Suarez(c) Fletcher

    Tremmel Fellaini Clyne Gunter
1 FT 1.9 in the bank

Was planning to do Defoe to Berbatov, but maybe I should save the FT now as I need a new 'keeper next week and Defoe could do well against Terry's lack of pace?
I could also solidify the defence by doing Gunter to ANYONE!

Am I mad to be considering benching Hazard this week?

    Front 8

Cazorla (nor) Sterling (RDG) Michu (WIG) Pienaar (qpr) Hazard (tot)
RVP (STO) Berb (AVL) Lambert (whu)

If I don't play Sterling at home to Reading, then why on earth have I got him in my team? Tottenham have looked stronger at the back recently, can't see much for Chelsea in that one.

To be honest, he's on my exit list. But I don't get the logic that no player is unbenchable, regardless of price. He's played every other week, but this week every other member of my attacking 8 has a better fixture.

I'd argue that's not true. Limited data, but you could say he's been a bit of a flat track bully so far. Big points vs Reading, Norwich, Wigan, and a less secure than last season Newcastle but nothing away at Arsenal, home against a tough Stoke defence and away at QPR.

Not saying its not a tough decision to bench him, and if I do it, I could end up with egg on my face, but don't think he's proved himself to be fixtureproof yet.

I think sterling has the potential to be a little more than bench fodder, hence the reluctance to bench him for an ideal easy game, if it was Guthrie et al it would seem insane.

He is on my hit list. Weighing up Berba or Giroud as replacement options. Both carry risks but could easily be replaced by Crouch once Stoke enter their 'easier' run of fixtures.

Yeah...i've sort of worked out that for anybody who's a bit transfer happy...then as change 2/3 players you may as well change 8 in a gameweek...because you're only ever risking the three points...i quite like that idea really...doesn't help with the classic league one little bit though...

I actually really dislike the head to heads. So much luck involved in who you're drawn against each week; I've won plenty with crap scores and lost plenty with great scores. A game with such a large element of luck to start with doesn't need more luck thrown in.

H2H leagues are good for the pub, where people have an interest but maybe not the fanatical time wasting dedication of some of us.

I still have fond memories from last year though where I had him for his run of points last year (do nothing for most of the game and then get a penalty or lucky goal / assist!) and then I seemed to sell him for Sessegnon at just the right time when their form crossed over. A rare example of this sort of timing from me!

You may, and maybe you are correct. Well see in couple of weeks, but I would put money on the fact that more than 3 cheaper or same priced players will over-perform all of them, by a nice margin.

weel, granville, there's no doubt in taarabt's potential to score.. but QPR is playing like sh*te, i dont think their players are enjoying their moment on the field, that worries me. sterling at 4.8mil & playing regularly with the likes of suarez and gerrard is a steal, imho.

What his good form will do is allow Sagna to be reintroduced very gradually if need be.

With Man Utd and Tottenham in November, if Sagna's fully available - we'll go with experience in those games.

Yeah I think we're going to have a lot of strength in depth there in the next few years. Some great talent coming through: Walker, Jenkinson, Clyne, Richards (and hopefully not Glen Johnson!)

I know their home/away rotation is pretty patchy but what do you think of Bego/Mignolet up until the January wildcard:

NEW, SUN, AVL, QPR, whu/ful, WBA, QPR, nor, avl/CHE, EVE, sot, LIV, SOT

The 0.1 saving from Foster > Mignolet would allow me to have the little two week punt on Giroud I so badly crave (before switching back to Ba).

you can get mignolet and rotate him with bego

Not an uncommon scenario. Stoke look ywice the team atm, but Sunderland will need to show defensive resolve and Cuellar is the man to help spread the risk.

I'll prob get Cuellar 1st, then go for the STO double up with Wilson + begovich. That's what the head says ahoyhow.

Their fixtures look ok-ish, i guess. Gw10 is good but other than that, it's so-so... Just can't help thinking I should get rid. Never been one to double up on defence but a lot you folk seem to trust Stoke...
