Having drawn back the dull curtain of the international break, we can now bask in the light of domestic football once more, whilst taking time out to “catch-up” on fortnight’s coverage here on the Scout…

Teamsheet Talking Points

The break has, once again, been tortuous when it comes to injuries. Having faced Robin Van Persie’s knock in the last hiatus, this time around it was Marouane Fellaini and David Silva who fell foul of setbacks with both now absent for the weekend. There were the usual string of squad withdrawals to sift through but today’s team news and updates to the injuries and bans table should provide you with a guide to the full landscape going into the deadline.

With a fortnight’s window, Facer took to the magic sponge to deliver a couple of reports “From The Physio” – first looking at the mechanics of Gaston Ramirez’s dead leg, before switching attention to David Silva earlier this week – delivering a spot-on prognosis of the Spaniard’s situation prior to City’s update today.

Zooming to January, and with the African Cup of Nations lineup now decided, we also took time out to assess those players likely to be involved and therefore absent from our Fantasy reckoning in the New Year.

Looking Forward

First we frisked the fixtures, with Stoke City, Arsenal and Newcastle earmarked as purple patch teams for the weeks to come. Once the schedule had been eyed up, we moved on to recommending players for the month ahead as the Watchlist got the regular refresh. There then followed no less than five Watchlist articles over the break as Olivier Giroud, Dimitar Berbatov, John Arne Riise, Jon Walters and Hatem Ben Arfa all got the treatment.

Here’s just a sample of Stilicho’s take on Giroud’s potential…

“Whilst long-term there is the possibility that Wenger will adopt the same horses-for-courses approach with his forwards as he has with his centre backs, it seems profoundly unlikely that he would puncture Giroud’s newly inflated confidence with a return to the bench over a run of fixtures that looks rosy for Arsenal’s attacking assets (nor, QPR, mun, RDG, TOT).”

Members Club

Our members have enjoyed a rare old fortnight. Not only have we produced three “Numbers Game” articles that analysed the goal threat on offer across the defenders, midfielders and forwards, we also managed to roll out our new Custom Stats Tables feature to open up our Opta powered database.

If you’ve yet to get the beef on what’s involved, this little article, together with this movie should demonstrate the power of this technological terror. Our members area has been awash with new stats tables made available in the public gallery right here and with the Projections updated and Chris Glover hitting home with another Moneyball article today, there’s been plenty of numbers to digest.

Talking Tactics

It seems such a long time ago but, as always, Paul scratched our tactical itch after the dust had settled on Gameweek 7 by analysing United’s diamond midfield that was so effective in their 3-0 win at Newcastle. Here’s a concluding snippet from our latest Technical Area

“While the tactical spotlight has mainly centred on Chelsea since the arrival of Eden Hazard and Oscar, United’s shift of system over these last few games certainly hints at another evolution under Ferguson. Whether it’s to protect the shaky defence or find a solution to integrate the two summer signings alongside Rooney or perhaps a combination of both, the diamond affords a definite alternative to the usual 4-4-2 and gives United another dimension to their style of play as Ferguson attempts to wrestle the title back from Roberto Mancini’s City.”

Weekly Regulars

Friday’s Scout Picks perhaps brought few surprises with the big guns firmly expected to deliver this weekend. Mid-price hopefuls Kevin Nolan and Michu are again backed to deliver with strong home fixtures, while Dimitar Berbatov’s return to fitness had him slot straight back into our lineup.

If you’re looking for something different, we delivered that just a few hours ago – Paul drilled deeper on the potential offered by Olivier Giroud and mid-price midfielders – Leon Osman and Adel Taarabt.

That saw us into Saturday morning and brought an end to the fortnight’s coverage, leaving only the Pre-match preamble to see us over the line.

If you’re still left wanting more, don’t forget to check out this week’s ScoutCast, offering and audio walkthrough the break and the regular preview of the weekend action. Thanks for listening.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I wouldn't usually, but with two goalkeepers who don't start and a Chelsea defender with a terrible run of fixtures coming up I feel like I need to make some changes. Besides, I feel like Baines can justify the hit.

I've got all them except Berba but I've had it on Suarez for 2 weeks. Now that deadline is approaching I'm starting to waver, particularly after Uruguay played Bolivia at 29,000 feet on Tuesday and the goofy one had to travel 14,000 miles.

I'll be honest, I think all of them are really good options this week. It comes down to a bit of luck in the end to pick the right captain! RVP just that bit more consistent for me. Focal point of a free-scoring MUN team, at home and on at least some set pieces.

I think both are first choice, I just think Aguero will score more. And Tevez is the more likely to get subbed off for Ballo/Dzeko. That said, Tevez's cheaper price tag makes it a tough call on the value front. Tough to call right now.

        Jaask (Foster)
        Baines-Davies-Hangeland (Jenkinson-Zabaleta)
        Noble-Michu-Sterling-Hazard (Puncheon)
        Torres-RvP-Tevez

If I do Zabaleta-->Rafael, I'm gonna bench Noble, but if I do Tevez-->Berbatov I'm playing Noble. Also I'm 90% sure I'm gonna WC after this gw, so only have to consider whats best this week.

Rafael depends heavily on a clean sheet to score well Man U has not been great at it except for last game although Stoke does not strike as offensively powerful; nevertheless one goal ruins it for him and Tevez plays at West Brom who can be difficult at home.

Berbatov and Noble have easy fixtures much more potential for bigger scores I believe and both are at home. I think Berbs has a chance to outscore them by himself.

I have a fail safe in place to get RVP if it turns out it was a huge mistake to cut him in the coming weeks. Can do Hazard and Tevez -> Nolan and RVP but hoping it doesn't come to that.

That's pretty tempting actually. Hazard is a tricky one - fixtures are awful and we've yet to see how he performs against the better teams (got nothing from Arsenal if I recall). Safe play is to stick, slightly risky play is to take the hit you mention. Do you feel lucky? Well do ya, punk?! 🙂

LOL nah I ment that I could make that move next week for free as I'll have 2FT. I'm gonna try and not take any more hits this season as they are pretty hard to justify unless you can't field enough players. It was a mad scarmble at the start but now that I've used my WC I think I'm in ok shape.

Don't plan to cut him unless he starts facing rotation. He plays so high up the pitch that it would be to risky for me to get rid right now. I'll be able to get RVP another way if it comes to that.

    Who to captain this week?

    Suarez, RVP, Cazorla

There are good reasons for all of them. Currently with Suarez as the logical choice considering Reading's defense. Cazorla is up there too. Figure Stoke will probably hold down the fort and not concede too many.

The alternatives are why I don't have RVP in the first place. I alot of RVP owners claim that he is a guaranteed captain choice each which justifies his price tage. 13.4 mil player who isn't a banker vs a team Man u always crush is prob a liability imo.

Been thinking about this all day. Process of elimination

      1. When Arsenal scored 6 vs SOT....caz only had one assist. I fear that it could happen again.
      2. Stoke will keep it tight
      3. You bought Suarez in for his good run of fixtures. Seeing that this is the last one for a few weeks, it must be him. He is the most likely to have a massive haul. Allthough that woodwork might become frustrating.

I would captain Suarez. Will get plenty of changes to score as usual and i think he will put atleast one in.I dont have him so at the moment so RVP C and Cazorla V for me.

I could get him in for free tough. Camzy what do you think Tevez out Suarez in or Hazard out Bale in?

      2-0
      2-1
      4-0
      5-0
      5-0

Point being, I don't think Stoke will keep it as tight as a lot of people think.

      3-0 for me. RVP x 2, Rooney x 1

November to Jan Wild Card imo is when you can make real inroads. Cause by the free WC, teams tend to become pretty generic/template and it's harder to differentiate your team.

My team is in a pretty solid position and nothing too major is needed, but i'm thinking of using my WC in GW9 super offensively?

So id go from my current team,

    Foster, Begovic

    Cuellar, Baines, Zabaleta, Figueroa, Gunter

    Cazorla, Michu, Pienaar, Bale, Nolan

    Suarez, Ba, Podolski

    To WC team:

    De Gea, Begovic

    Cuellar, Hughes, Olsson, Wilson, O'Brien

    Nolan, Bale, Cazorla, Pienaar, Maloney

    RVP, Arguero, Berbatov

Few major risks in there, the RVP/Aguero combo and De Gea. Idea is the fixtures turn for United and City soon, we know mostly where the value budget picks are now and that rotating armband could pay off big time (or ruin my season).

I think of De Gea gets that keeper spot, he is absurd value.

    Madness or genius?

    25,000 RVP transfers out.

    It'll end in tears.

What do you think of these transfers?

    Friedel to Begovic
    Cole A to Baines

This would be a 4 point hit, but neither of my goalkeepers are regular starters any more(Green is my other goalie) so I need to bring in a new goalie. Any thoughts?
