The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 8

Filed under: The Watchlist - Posted by: Paul

With an enticing set of fixtures just around the corner, Arsenal, Newcastle and Stoke take a climb in our updated Watchlist rankings. Everton’s main assets hold firm, while the likes of Chelsea and Swansea start to slide a little. As always, the new rankings can be found in your sidebar – here’s a round-up of the main movers:

Goalkeepers

Asmir Begovic moves to the top of the rankings, in spite of a trip to Old Trafford on the cards. With clean sheets against Arsenal and Liverpool already this season, and just one goal conceded in showdowns with Chelsea and City, the Stoke stopper is proving a superb cut-price acquisition at the back. Sitting third in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) rankings already, Begovic now braces himself for a superb run of fixtures from Gameweek 9 onwards which will surely see plenty new suitors snap up his services.

West Brom’s Ben Foster tucks in just behind Begovic. With three home games and a trip to Southampton in the next five, the Baggies keeper offers strong home/away rotation with the Potters keeper right now and also has the comfort of save points to fall back upon, if the likes of City or Chelsea find the net at the Hawthorns.

Simon Mignolet holds steady in third, with two home games and a trip to Stoke in the next three Gameweeks. Granted, Sunderland will welcome Newcastle to the Stadium of Light on the back of a 3-0 defeat at City but prior to that Etihad clash, they had conceded just four goals in their opening five fixtures – a clear sign of the resilience offered by Martin O’Neill’s troops.

An upcoming run of three home fixtures and a trip to Reading in the next five Gameweeks brings Mark Schwarzer into our thoughts. While the visit of Everton could pose problems for the Australian, Cottage showdowns against Villa and Sunderland should offer the chance of defensive returns.

Joe Hart remains in our top five. The City keeper has a kind run of fixtures up next and grabbed his first clean sheet of the season last time round – while rest and rotation continue to blight Roberto Mancini’s backline, Hart offers guaranteed game time, albeit at a hefty price.

Tim Howard’s schedule continues to appeal, though he’s always likely to be behind Leighton Baines in the pecking order when it comes to investing in Everton’s defensive options. Alex McCarthy also gets a nod. Priced at 4.0 in FPL, he has a decent run of fixtures, strong form and has now started the last four for Reading due to Adam Federici’s ongoing knee problem.

Defenders

Leighton Baines continues to top the defender rankings going into the international break. Everton perhaps haven’t been the most resilient so far (they have returned just one clean sheet in their last six) but the left-back’s attacking threat and spot-kick duties means he has produced six or more FPL points in five of his seven appearances. With strong fixtures to follow, it’s no surprise to see his price has risen 0.4 since Gameweek 5.

Thomas Vermaelen takes a leap in our estimations with Arsenal set to embark on a kind looking schedule. Somewhat surprisingly, the Belgian has yet to find the net this term but his threat from the back could finally come to the fore against the likes of Norwich, QPR and Fulham over the next four. Kieran Gibbs is your cut price alternative in the Gunners backline, but he’s carrying a knock while Carl Jenkinson’s future as a bargain Fantasy prospect has taken a hit from Bacary Sagna’s return to fitness. Jenkinson seems set to feature at Norwich in Gameweek 8 but then looks vulnerable.

The aerial threat of Robert Huth finds a place in the top three. With Charlie Adam now in charge of free-kicks and corners for Stoke, Huth’s presence in the box at set-pieces is always liable to panic opposition defences and with (SUN, nor, QPR, whm, FUL, NEW) following on from the Potters’ trip to United, the big German looks a definite alternative for our five-man defences from Gameweek 9 onwards. Marc Wilson is the alternative available for those on tighter budgets – at 4.5 in the FPL, Wilson offers value, although he can’t rival Huth for goal threat.

Vincent Kompany may have missed out in City’s 3-0 win over Sunderland due to a calf injury but with his absence expected to be no more than short-term, the Belgian makes his way up the rankings. The champions are finally beginning to show some solidity at the back but with Micah Richards’ return now casting doubts over Pablo Zabaleta’s game time, Kompany, once again, is the safest route into City’s defence.

Jan Vertonghen holds steady in fifth spot – no doubt boosted by a first clean sheet of the season last time round against Villa. The Belgian may have to up his goal threat if he’s to stay so high in our thinking going forward, though – with Chelsea, City and Arsenal in the next five, he could find defensive returns hard to come by. Games against Southampton and Wigan still look enticing enough to earn him a place in our thoughts.

John Arne Riise moves up after grabbing his third assist of the season last weekend. The Norwegian is the priciest option amongst Fulham’s defence but his attacking returns make a persuasive case for his consideration. Steven Taylor looks well-place to prosper from Gameweek 9 onwards if he can overcome his current calf problem, while Rafael continues to hover via his strong attacking intent, despite games against Chelsea and Arsenal in Gameweeks 9-10.

Midfielders

Santi Cazorla makes his way to top spot in the midfield rankings after another superb performance for Arsenal last weekend. As the Gameweeks pass, the Spaniard is becoming increasingly integral to the Gunners’ chances of success; he has now produced attacking returns in four of his last five matches and with (nor, QPR, FUL, TOT) amongst his next five, the Fantasy investment is set to step up.

He may have returned a blank last time out but our faith in Gareth Bale doesn’t waver. With the return of Emmanuel Adebayor casting doubts over Jermain Defoe’s starting role, the Welshman looks the main goal threat right now for Tottenham and as his 16 point FPL haul at United in Gameweek 6 showed, he has the form to more than compensate for his tricky fixtures.

David Silva takes a climb in light of City’s strong upcoming set of fixtures. While Roberto Mancini continues to tinker with his frontline options, the little Spaniard has now played 90 minutes in each of the last three Gameweeks, with his match fitness finally up to scratch. Down to just 9.6 in FPL and with less than 7% ownership, Silva has the potential to dazzle as a real differential over the next few matches.

Steven Pienaar makes a move up the leaderboard due to Marouane Fellaini’s possible knee problem. While Everton have confirmed the latter’s withdrawal from the Belgium squad, we’ve no indication as to whether Fellaini is at risk of missing out for the Gameweek 8 trip to QPR, though. Juan Mata and Eden Hazard both take a tumble down the pecking order due to Chelsea’s upcoming schedule, though the Blues duo clearly have the class to overcome their run of difficult fixtures.

Kevin Nolan maintains his high rank, boosted by the return of Andy Carroll, while Hatem Ben Arfa looks set for increased investment over the next few matches. The Frenchman has either scored or assisted in three of his four matches at St James’ Park and has (WBA, WHM, SWA) from Gameweek 9-12. Stoke’s Jon Walters’ has an “out of position” classification and spot-kick duties in his locker and could be set to prosper ahead of the Potter’s upcoming run of games.

Forwards

In spite of Wayne Rooney’s return, Robin Van Persie remains an immovable object in our rankings. The former’s more withdrawn role in United’s midfield diamond suggests the Dutchman is set to continue as Sir Alex Ferguson’s main man up top – enough to maintain our faith, despite one goal in the last four Gameweeks. In truth, the lack of secure attacking alternatives in the United lineup helps him out as a Fantasy option: it seems unthinkable to go forward without covering United’s attacking returns and while we wait for Rooney and Antonio Valencia to settle into their seasons, Van Persie remains the focal point of our attention.

Nikica Jelavic is another Everton asset who takes a leap after the Fellaini news. With three goals and an assist in his last two, it’s hardly a difficult decision to elevate the Croatian up to second in the forward rankings.

He may have missed the last couple of matches through injury but we fully expect Dimitar Berbatov to return to action for Fulham next time round. With three home games and a trip to Reading in the next five, the Bulgarian looks primed for points, with many likely to hand him the armband for the Gameweek 8 visit of Villa. Now down to less than 5% ownership in FPL, he could be a deadly differential.

Sergio Aguero sits still in fourth. Rested to the bench last time round, the City forward wasted little time in notching after he replace Mario Balotelli on 55 minutes against Sunderland. Aguero has now scored in back-to-back appearances and with Carlos Tevez now goalless since Gameweek 3, Roberto Mancini can surely ill-afford to leave out the former Atletico Madrid man if his side are to pick up the pace in pursuit of Chelsea.

Having scored six of Newcastle’s eight goals in the opening seven Gameweeks, Demba Ba could be set for further attacking returns. As mentioned above, Newcastle’s upcoming fixtures look hugely enticing – coming in at 8.2 in FPL, the Magpies man still looks a bargain. A goal and assist from Olivier Giroud vindicated Arsene Wenger’s decision to start the Frenchman at West Ham last Saturday – with confidence returning, the former Montpellier man’s upcoming schedule cannot be overlooked, as concerns perhaps ease over his starting role.

Rickie Lambert and Peter Crouch afford us medium-priced options up top. Both have decent fixtures to follow and while Lambert’s spot-kicks boost his appeal, Crouch’s contribution is near-essential to Stoke’s attacking potential – he has scored four and assisted one of his side’s six goals so far this season.

Having a very disturbing moral dilemma here guys and I could do with some help please!

Had 2 FT's following from last week, used one of them to switch hazard to Cazorla and then started working on a way to work Silva into my team some how... Until fellaini got injured that is...

    Current team:

    Jaaskelinen (Ruddy)
    Baines, Jenkinson, Rafael, (Demel, Clyne)
    Cazorla, Sterling, HBA, Fellaini, (Nolan)
    RVP, Lambert, Tevez

1 FT 0.8m in the bank.

Can anyone spot a move in this mess where I can bring Silva in and still keep Everton coverage? Wouldn't be adverse to a 4 point hit if it pays off.

    1. silva hasn't done much yet. Fellani -- Pienaar is the obvious move

      1. ddp
        • Reputation Level: Scout

last 3 game weeks he's played full match and brought back attacking returns. If you look at his opta stats he's primed for an explosion of points on the back of what is set to be a very good set of city fixtures. plus he's seems to be the only city attacking player who won't rotate as often.

    2. tevez>berba
      fellaini>silva

      1. or maybe ba ??

    3. Benching Nolan this week is fecking madness.
      Beyond madness.
      Captaining Ameobi madness.

    4. Tevez to Jellyfish?

      1. ddp
        • Reputation Level: Scout

I tried that, but it doesn't give me enough to afford silva.

  5. Anybody like to comment on my squad?

    Foster Begovic
    Santon Gallas Jenkinson Hughes Demel
    Hazard Cazorla Yaya Pienaar Sterling
    RVP Berba Torres

Any suggested transfers? Don't think I want to touch my midfield!! Maybe take out gallas as spurs fixtures are tough!!

Potentially just going to rotate 3rd striker so torres > giroud for GW8 then giroud>defoe for gw10 etc..

    1. Maybe it's time to get rid of Yaya. Nobody knows what AVB is gonna do with Defoe now that Adebayor is back fit. My guess is that he'll be benched

      1. He is only city player with joe hart that is guaranteed a start!! I need city coverage

AVB quotes today “I WOULDN’T FORCE A CHANGE WHEN A PLAYER IS PRODUCING AT THESE LEVELS...THE COMPETITION IS MAKING HIM TICK.”

Defoe will keep his place until his form drops!!

        1. Tevez and Aguero are citys two best players, they will both play plenty of minutes every game

He said that today? Why the CAPS LOCK? Defoe is pretty gash at any rate.

          1. Aguero didn't start at weekend and Tevez didn't start weekend before so are rotation risks and you could never be 100% confident of giving them the armband!!

Yes, caps lock coz i copied and pasted it!! Defoe 4 goals 2 assists in 7 games, decent returns if u ask me

    2. seriously missing baines...

      1. too late now, too expensive, only a few good fixtures left before they start getting hard and he can't keep this form up the whole time

  6. For short to medium term:

    a) Jenkinson + Caulker

    or

    b) Olsson + Cuellar

    or

    c) better defensive combo for 9.6 total?

    1. both options are very short term, 3 weeks max!!

      1. how is b) very short term? something i'm missing?

        1. only talking about a) who wants olsson with west broms hideous fixtures

          1. true...I have a) atm...but plan to save 2fts to do b) for the mid-long term....

            1. simpson and shawcross are better short term if u can find extra 0.2

  7. Cardinals lead 6-0, top of the 8th

    1. who gives a sh*t about baseball. dressage is more exciting than that

      1. I'm into dressage too ;)

      2. tapdancing for horses

    2. Holliday 2-run single; 8-0

    3. Beltran ground rule double

  8. Tough question:
    1) BMW 318 executive, 2 years old, 30K km.
    2) Hyundai ix 35, new, basic model

    Same price.

      1. Thx, got 1 FT of a Seat Leon.

        1. Jeez... downgrade to a Panda and rebuild slowly.

          1. lol, but in this case next gw=2016.

    1. That's like

      1. Gerrard
      2. Sterling

      1. I disagree;

        1. Gerrard
        2. Morrison

The second gets the results, just unexcitingly

    2. Depends on whether you have a wildcard still or not. Longterm get the Hyundai, if you get the BMW then look to replace in the medium term. (also have you looked at insurance)

      1. I know, long term mind says Hyundai, short tearm heart says BMW

    3. which is the prettiest?

      1. BMW for SURE!!

        1. there's your answer. Easy

          1. i think you are right. cheers.

    4. 2) no-one likes a bottom of the range BMW.

    5. Neither. Both awful.

  9. Hi guys cant make my mind up between two teams at the moment,

    Team A

    Foster, Rudd
Baines, A cole, A Williams, Riise, Clyne
Fellaini, duff, kacaniklic, michu, santi cazorla
    RVP, Fletcher, Jelavic

    Team B

    Foster, Rudd
Baines, A cole, A Williams, Riise, Clyne
Silva, bale, kacaniklic, Ben Arfa, santi cazorla
    Berbatov, Fletcher, Jelavic

    any ideas

    1. rudd needs to go

    2. Team B

  10. Coleen Rooney ‏@ColeenRoo
A few people guessed, so news is out ha!! Me wayne and Kai are thrilled that we are expecting a new addition to our family around May time x

    1. so, RVP > Rooney then?

    2. wow

    3. Thought i had stumbled on Hello magazines forum there.

    4. Is it Wayne's or Kai's?

    5. Who remembers that 70's "Makin' bacon" poster? ;)

    6. Another hair transplant?

  11. A) Crouch
    B) Lambert

I already have puncheon, but don't intend to play him much

    1. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

      1. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanyone but Lambert

      2. yup.

    2. Lambert was pretty popular last week. He's shit now though. Go Crouch! (for a week r so at least).

      1. actually, Go Crouch (after this next GW)!

  12. To go along with my Schwarz - Verm - Evra - Agger - A. Hughes back line:

    A) McCarthy - J. Evans
    B) B. Foster - S. Caulker

I'm looking for long-term value, as this is my drafted team. Foster rotates slightly better with Schwarz, but obviously, ManU have the better D, and Caulker is more likely to be dropped than Jevans, imo.

    1. my back line is baines, ivanovic, verm, wisdom, mccartney... you should have that

      1. no can do. owners in my league already have Baines and Ivano.

      2. ccc

dam thats a lot of money spent on the back line

        1. not the same pricing as FPL.

  13. hi guys ..
    if felliani out
was thinking of felliani defoe out
    nolan jelly in ..
    what you think

    1. do you already have berbatov?

        1. then lallana giroud in

    2. good short-term, tho Nolan may falter in the long-term. they've got tough fixtures on the horizon.

      1. Morrison for longer term

    3. Not sure about Nolan, for the next 2 gw ok but after gw 9 his fixtures will be terrible.

    4. ccc

I'm not sold on nolan or morrison. I'm tempted by routledge.

  14. Any news on Gibbs/Berba's injuries?

Also, will Berb drop again this week?

  15. Bale v Adam Fri....

    1. ugh, don't remind me.

    2. Full body armour required

    3. Yeah I'm sweating over which one to bring in...Adam has flair but Bale has hair!

      1. and those beautiful ears of his! :)

        1. Beautiful pinned ears.

    4. Bale will be diving out of the way this time.

      1. Or getting in first... ;)

        1. :D . Hopefully no injuries for nboth of them

    5. I'm a bit worried Adam will have forgotten how to pass after signing for Stoke.

      1. It's not his passing I'm worried about...

  16. Had 3 yellow/amber flags so took an 8pt hit.... Now got 4! :)

    1. got 5, no sweat its 2 weeks away....

      1. This ;)

    2. Patience Grasshopper.

      1. Sorry had four, still got four

Michu Ramirez Fletcher to Cazorla Berbs Gera

        Kept Clyne Demel S Taylor

        1. Michu and Fletch weren't worth ditching for GW8...but you've done it so good luck!

          1. For Cazorla and Berbs? We'll have to agree to disagree :)

            1. Well I have Cazorla and tempted by Berb so I'm not completely disagreeing with your plan.

  17. Is this team ok?

    Begovic/Jussi
    Baines Gibbs Staylor/Cuellar Demel
    Cazorla Bale Silva Barfa
    RVP Berb Sterling/Lambert

/ indicates perfect home away rotation

    1. Home/away rotation is vastly overrated imo. Surely fixture rotation is better? Actually I think all rotation plans are iffy... always something to ruin it

      1. both have excellent fixture rotation... just take a look at sterling/lambert combo for the next 11 gws...

      2. For keepers and your 7th and 8th front 8 player it usually works unless injuries happen.

    2. Yes, similar to mine - like it a lot!

  18. 2 freebies

Option 1. Sell Tevez and Hazard for Gervinho and Aguero

Option 2. Sell Hazard for Cazorla...keep Tevez and save 1 transfer.

    Thanks.

    1. not 1.

      2 seems ok

surely have more options with 2 FTs than that... think outside the box

      1. Could use the extra transfer to do Michu to HBA and Huges to Wilson in the gw after the next one. Planning to do that...but that Tevez rotation thing frightens me!!

    2. ccc
      • Reputation Level: Scout

I would not suggest getting Gervinho. Maybe get Aguero and Pienaar.

i'd be nervous with a defense like that

      1. I just think that midfield will score well - not been many clean sheets this season !

        1. That's slightly irrelevant though, the top teams will keep CS consistently over the season...but it's your choice if you want to go for cheapos.

    3. I've gone with this cheap well rotating defence, and it has worked well for me, as not many teams are getting consistent clean sheets! (WH and Stoke among the best, and I have doubled up on both defenses). My only concern for this strategy is not having popular goalscoring DF like Baines.

I quite like it to be honest...not sure about the prog though. Would probably downgrade Suarez to Ba and upgrade prog to Lambert (or someone in similar price range)

      1. think suarez for this week and then maybe jelavic ..........this game drives me mad ..............

    RMT (on a WC)

    Begovic/Jaask
    Cashley/Gibbs/Rafael
    Hazard/Cazorla/Michu/Pienaar
    Van Persie/Ba/Berbatov

-Keep Michu? If not, I have 7.3m to find a replacement.
-I ditched Tevez, because of rotation risk at Man. City.
-I went with Berbatov, rather than Fletcher. Good idea or bad idea?
    -Any other advice? Thanks.

    1. Personally I think Berbatov/Fletcher is a toss a coin situation. Both have ok fixtures in the short term but the problem is Berb's injury...will he be match fit? Worth a risk though.

    2. You need a City coverage!!

      1. ccc
        • Reputation Level: Scout

City frontline is a rotation risk and expensive. Yaya has had poor returns, and he is the best fpl midfield earner for them atm. Silva is still expensive for his point returns. They also are a mess in the back. Who the hell thought Lescott would have be a rotation in the start of the season.

    3. If Berb is fit then defo him over Fletch. Michu is good for one week only, so maybe downgrade to Nolan and upgrade Cashley to Baines.

  21. NEW POST

  22. Should I wild card this?

    Jaask - Reina
Hughes - Baines - Ivanovic - Lescott- Jenkinson
    Caz - Fellaini - Michu - Dembele - Maloney
    Tevez - Lambert - Ba

Fellaini injured, Lescott too expensive for being nailed on, Michu has one good fixture left, Tevez isn't nailed on, Jussi poor fixtures.

  23. Ridgewell fellaini and Fletcher to Ba, Nolan and Huth for a 4pt?

    1. nope for huth, probably he'll be red carded soon loool
probably you can consider evans/rafael for ridgewell replacemen then !!

  24. RVP is my captain

    1. why not ....

  25. i'm considering getting ivan regardless of fixtures. thoughts?

  26. I have 2 free transfers and i'm doing RVP - Aguero and Yaya - Cazorla.

    Do I:

    A. Do them now to avoid price rises.

    B. Wait for the international games to ensure i don't have any injuries.

  27. For the next 3 weeks. Who will score more?

    A. Jelly

    B. Defoe

  28. This is my current team;

    Vorm

    Ivanovic Evra Jenkinson

    Hazard Dyer Y.Toure Pienaar

    Torres Jelavic Tevez

I have 0.1 in the bank and 1 FT. I want to get rid of Dyer and Vorm but don't want to lose points making an additional transfer, so I was thinking of taking Dyer out for Sterling and taking Vorm out next week. What change do you guys think I should make?
