Having drawn back the dull curtain of the international break, we can now bask in the light of domestic football once more, whilst taking time out to “catch-up” on fortnight’s coverage here on the Scout…

Teamsheet Talking Points

The break has, once again, been tortuous when it comes to injuries. Having faced Robin Van Persie’s knock in the last hiatus, this time around it was Marouane Fellaini and David Silva who fell foul of setbacks with both now absent for the weekend. There were the usual string of squad withdrawals to sift through but today’s team news and updates to the injuries and bans table should provide you with a guide to the full landscape going into the deadline.

With a fortnight’s window, Facer took to the magic sponge to deliver a couple of reports “From The Physio” – first looking at the mechanics of Gaston Ramirez’s dead leg, before switching attention to David Silva earlier this week – delivering a spot-on prognosis of the Spaniard’s situation prior to City’s update today.

Zooming to January, and with the African Cup of Nations lineup now decided, we also took time out to assess those players likely to be involved and therefore absent from our Fantasy reckoning in the New Year.

Looking Forward

First we frisked the fixtures, with Stoke City, Arsenal and Newcastle earmarked as purple patch teams for the weeks to come. Once the schedule had been eyed up, we moved on to recommending players for the month ahead as the Watchlist got the regular refresh. There then followed no less than five Watchlist articles over the break as Olivier Giroud, Dimitar Berbatov, John Arne Riise, Jon Walters and Hatem Ben Arfa all got the treatment.

Here’s just a sample of Stilicho’s take on Giroud’s potential…

“Whilst long-term there is the possibility that Wenger will adopt the same horses-for-courses approach with his forwards as he has with his centre backs, it seems profoundly unlikely that he would puncture Giroud’s newly inflated confidence with a return to the bench over a run of fixtures that looks rosy for Arsenal’s attacking assets (nor, QPR, mun, RDG, TOT).”

Members Club

Our members have enjoyed a rare old fortnight. Not only have we produced three “Numbers Game” articles that analysed the goal threat on offer across the defenders, midfielders and forwards, we also managed to roll out our new Custom Stats Tables feature to open up our Opta powered database.

If you’ve yet to get the beef on what’s involved, this little article, together with this movie should demonstrate the power of this technological terror. Our members area has been awash with new stats tables made available in the public gallery right here and with the Projections updated and Chris Glover hitting home with another Moneyball article today, there’s been plenty of numbers to digest.

Talking Tactics

It seems such a long time ago but, as always, Paul scratched our tactical itch after the dust had settled on Gameweek 7 by analysing United’s diamond midfield that was so effective in their 3-0 win at Newcastle. Here’s a concluding snippet from our latest Technical Area

“While the tactical spotlight has mainly centred on Chelsea since the arrival of Eden Hazard and Oscar, United’s shift of system over these last few games certainly hints at another evolution under Ferguson. Whether it’s to protect the shaky defence or find a solution to integrate the two summer signings alongside Rooney or perhaps a combination of both, the diamond affords a definite alternative to the usual 4-4-2 and gives United another dimension to their style of play as Ferguson attempts to wrestle the title back from Roberto Mancini’s City.”

Weekly Regulars

Friday’s Scout Picks perhaps brought few surprises with the big guns firmly expected to deliver this weekend. Mid-price hopefuls Kevin Nolan and Michu are again backed to deliver with strong home fixtures, while Dimitar Berbatov’s return to fitness had him slot straight back into our lineup.

If you’re looking for something different, we delivered that just a few hours ago – Paul drilled deeper on the potential offered by Olivier Giroud and mid-price midfielders – Leon Osman and Adel Taarabt.

That saw us into Saturday morning and brought an end to the fortnight’s coverage, leaving only the Pre-match preamble to see us over the line.

If you’re still left wanting more, don’t forget to check out this week’s ScoutCast, offering and audio walkthrough the break and the regular preview of the weekend action. Thanks for listening.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So my D is bothering me with Demel and Gibbs injuries! It looks like this:

    Raf/Baines/Gibbs/Demel/Gorkss

I would much rather not have Gorkss come in and face my Suarez C domination that is pending...

Now, my planned transfer this week was Zamora to Berbs and Hazard to Bale (or another sub 9.5 mid) to fund it. Should I stick with my plan or do something with my D ? I have 2 free transfers. Thoughts appreciated !

If I stick with my plan do I take Bale? Or maybe Mata/Oscar/Gerard? I don't mind a good punt.... unlike my failed Zamora (while Berb was injured) punt.

Cole A is about to have a terrible run of fixtures though, and Baines seems to be bringing in points every week. I don't really look forward to having Begovic during the Man U match, but if Friedel and Green don't play then I get no goalkeeper points.

i always keep ashley cole for the whole season, he ends up being one of the top defenders. id figure out a way to get baines in for another defender. or if you really want baines in right away then do it since he has really nice fixtures after the liverpool game

If I could make the transfer for any of my other defenders I would, but my next highest priced defender is Zabaleta at 5.9 and I don't know where I can free up money any time soon, so I feel like bringing in Baines would be a good move.

2 free transfers is great if you're taking a 1 week punt. Carroll could do well, i know you say it's only 1 week but by next week something else could crop up in your team that needs changing so you could keep Carroll for the next 2. Torres out is good regardless as i can't see him getting much from the next two. Looking at your team, you could probably afford Tevez too? Is he not more tempting with 2 great fixtures aswell..

      Berbatov most definitely.

Fulham: avg 3 goals per game at home
Villa: Concedes avg 2 goals/game away

Fulham's tactic: give it to Berbatov to score

      No not worth it.

If tevez plays most of the match and provided he doesnt score at all and no assists and just stands there he'll get 2 points. Which means that Giroud will have to outscore Tevez by more than 4 points. Not too likely. Same goes for Fell -> Sterling. He's likely to get an assist but thats only 3 points

LOL! Yeah. The long break is making me desperate for a hit! I'm fixed on Sterling. Getting Reading mids won't be a bad option but I'm playing safe.

Its between Berba and Giroud really. Since I don't have any ARS coverage, I'm tilted towards the latter.

Some things to note about them two:

              1) Fulham has one GREAT player, and that's Berbatov so their gameplan is to let him score.
              2) Fulham has scored an average of 3 goal at home
              3) Villa's conceded an average of 2 goals per game away.
              4) Despite the 2 recent Giroud goals, he still doesnt seem to be that good. But that's just me.

That's how probability works for me haha! 😀

Probably not. Sterling would have to score to make your points back. Just do one is a toss up on who will do better tomorrow between Tevez and Giroud and if you get rid of Fellaini this week there is a chance u might want him next week. How about one transfer a straight swap Fellaini for Pienaar that way you lose no points and have someone in the game that can earn u some points.

im going with rvp. cazorla is a really good player but he doesnt seem to be killing it every game, he gets his goal or assist each game. arsenal vs southampton he only got an assist. rvp on the other hand can score a few goals in a couple of mins

Cazorla has had more shots on target in away games this season than any other player.
Norwich have conceded 9 goals in their last 2 games.
RVP has played 216 mins at Old Trafford for Man U and only had 1 shot on target.
Only Chelsea have conceded less goals than Stoke this season.

It's strange.. Why haven't player prices changed ?

Btw, I plan to captain RvP and the armband is with him now. Then, I just checked United impressive records against Stoke and found that SAF did usually rest some players against Stoke. He almost played Hernandez in every game vs Stoke and rare chance for Rooney..

Too much thinking? But records say clearly what SAF usually does.

Same question on Sterling vs Lambert.. 🙁

I'd keep Vorm for this week and keep of free transfer to next week.

      Bench Sterling
      And Mannone looks reasonably safe

Sterling. Three forwards is always better. Isn't Scezney due back this week? No?

Are these good enough reasons for captaining Cazorla instead of RVP?

    - Cazorla has had more shots on target in away games this season than any other player.
    - Norwich have conceded 9 goals in their last 2 games.
    - RVP has played 216 mins at Old Trafford for Man U and only had 1 shot on target.
    - Only Chelsea have conceded less goals than Stoke this season.

      Interesting... I'm tempted.

      Plus

      - SAF did usually rest some key players against Stoke. He usually started Hernandez + Berbatov + Park in home game vs Stoke.

Probably been asked a thousand times but I've been travelling (if anyone knows which channel spurs v Chelsea is on in Kuwait of all places let me know)....

Suarez or RVP for captain if you have both?

    First to 3?

      I like VSS.

Likely to start and goal threat.
      Fixtures improved and goal threat.
      Play in better team. (?)

not sure why u would consider the first option. Gibbs is out, Kolarov might be back on the bench and is a big rotation risk and Kaca does not play enough. the other option offers u 3 starters this week.
