Javier Hernandez bags a brace as United claw back a two-goal deficit to see off a spirited Braga at Old Trafford. Oscar scores in Europe once again but his endeavours are not enough to prevent Chelsea from slipping to defeat at Shakhtar. Elsewhere, Arsene Wenger may hand Jack Wilshere some game time this weekend, while Bryan Ruiz remains a doubt for Fulham’s trip to Reading:

Man United 3 Braga 2
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side continued to show little sign of improving at the back – last night’s result means that have now conceded two or more goals in their last three home games in all competitions. With Sunday’s trip to Chelsea in mind, Ferguson dropped Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra from the back-four; Michael Carrick and Alexander Buttner were their respective replacements. Ferguson started with the diamond formation once again, in order to accommodate Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Shinji Kagawa and Javier Hernandez but with United trailing at half-time, Kagawa made way for Nani as United switched to a more conventional shape.

Hernandez has been somewhat unlucky in terms of league starts this term – he produced a goal and assist in his only first XI appearance back in Gameweek 4 – and served a reminder of his capabilities with a pair of goals as the Red Devils came from behind to pick up the points. Kagawa and Tom Cleverley provided the assists for the Mexican’s goals, while Jonny Evans also notched. A third straight win takes United to nine points, with qualification for the knock-out stages (and subsequent European rotation) looking imminent.

Post-match, however, Ferguson revealed Kagawa’s withdrawal was also due to an injury, while Anders Lindegaard is apparently out of the Stamford Bridge showdown with a thumb problem.

“Shinji twisted his knee. We had to take him off. He struggled on for 20 minutes after he got the injury. We’ll assess it in the morning as it’s too early to say what the damage is. I was confident the diamond would be important for us but, when you’re 2-0 down, it’s easy for them to kill the game by playing it out wide. So we had to change things with Nani on the right and [Wayne] Rooney on the left. Kagawa’s injury forced my hand to play Nani as a wide player and it made a difference in terms of their possession.”

Shakhtar 2 Chelsea 1
Roberto Di Matteo made just two changes from the side that saw off Spurs last weekend. John Terry returned to partner David Luiz in central defence as Gary Cahill dropped to the bench, while Eden Hazard surprisingly made way for Frank Lampard – Ramires moved to the right flank, while Lampard slotted in alongside John Obi Mikel. Lampard lasted just 18 minutes before limping off, with Hazard his replacement. Fernando Torres made way for Daniel Sturridge on 70 minutes, while Oscar grabbed his third goal of the Champions League campaign, with Branislav Ivanovic supplying the assist.

Post-match, Di Matteo confirmed Lampard suffered a recurrence of the calf problem that kept him out of the recent England internationals. Any possible absence would be a boost for Hazard’s owners, with the Belgian likely to be on spot-kicks if Lampard is unavailable.

Arsene Wenger has revealed that Jack Wilshere could make an appearance for Arsenal in this weekend’s home clash with QPR. After the midfielder featured in Monday’s U21 win over Everton, his manager admitted:

“There is a chance. He had 90 minutes yesterday, Sagna had 90 minutes, Frimpong had 90 minutes. We’ll see how they recover. We are a little bit in a trap at the moment because he needs to play full games and of course, 48 hours later is too dangerous to play a player, or even put him on the bench, who has not played for such a long time.”

Despite being initially ruled out for last week’s trip to Norwich, Wilshere was an unused sub in the disappointing loss on Saturday evening, as the Gunners tasted defeat for the second time in three Gameweeks. With a Champions League clash against Schalke this evening, it’s likely that Wenger will continue to ease the midfielder back into action – Arsenal now have three home games in the next four but a second-half sub appearance against Mark Hughes’ side looks the likeliest of scenarios for Wilshere after his 14-month absence.

Martin Jol has admitted he is uncertain as to whether Bryan Ruiz will be available for Fulham this weekend. The Costa Rican has been a decent source of creativity for the Cottagers this term, with three assists in five appearances, but missed out in the 1-0 win over Villa on Saturday after picking up a groin problem on international duty last week. With Dimitar Berbatov and Mladen Petric both recovering from injuries to take the front two places, Ruiz’s versatility was expected to earn him a role out wide but with Damien Duff also missing out due to illness, Jol is currently relying on Kieran Richardson and Hugo Rodallega on the flanks ahead of the trip to Reading.

Have never posted for advice, but would love some thoughts on where to use my 1 free transfer this week:

      Foster, Begovic
      Baines, Cuellar, Clyne, Davies, Demel
      Cazorla, Hazard, Nolan, Michu, Guthrie
      Tevez, RVP, Berbs

I'm thinking of shipping out Tevez for Ba (not knowing whether Tevez will start every week is a bit of a chore). Thoughts?

Hey guys thinking of taking out Suarez for Ba?
That would allow me for another another for a forward or a midfielder in 8.0mil range.
Berba or crouch or any suggestion for a worthy midfielder this week?

I'm in the same boat, sitting here with Suarez thinking I should ship him for Ba. If I don't ship him, even if he scores decent this week, I'll still be sitting there looking at Suarez' horrible fixtures on one side and Ba's great fixtures on the other hand and thinking I should ship him.

Ya exactly the same thought. It's more likely that Ba will be in the points in the next few weeks. He infant seems like captain material this week.
If I do get Ba in I need another player who would most likely replace Michu, which I'm not completely inclined to do or I should get another forward and that's where Berba comes in. Is he going to pay off? Hmm

because of how bad Man Utd have been at the back, if it wasn't for him scoring against Newcastle; his returns to date would have been shocking.

Does Valencia have a more secure starting position than Kagawa? I have Kagawa atm and I would like an United midfielder from gw 10 onwards because the fixtures look too tempting...or downgrade Kagawa and do Tevez -> Rooney? (have RVP also)

Continuing my theme of Arsenal's post-GW3 defensive frailty, does RVP's good fixture run actually start in GW10? Or is that going too far?

Personally I think Arsenal are nothing special defensively right now. They are obviously going to concede less than most teams below them but I had Gibbs and I gave myself a slap in the face for thinking their fixtures made an Arsenal defender essential. Maybe Sagna will be a good buy down the line.

But yes, I don't see why RVP at home to Arsenal is a bad fixture for him unless he was to choke against his former team.

Whats the most pressing transfer for GW9?

            Baines, Vermaelen, Fonte
            Michu, Sterling, Santi Cazola, Nolan

Subs – Foster, Pienaar, Demel, Gunter

            Pienaar > Walters / Lallana
Gunter > Gorkss (swap with Fonte)
            Lambert > Crouch

Gunter to Gorkss a bit pointless, pienaar could be good to either but you could just put him on the bench and save a ft. Lambert to crouch probably the best option but sot also have good fixtures and adkins has surely got to start lambert if he wants to keep his job so I'd stick with what you've got....

            Crouch and vert in?
Or maybe just Aguero in for fletcher?

With yet more doubt over Kagawa’s PL future with a knock picked up last night, he has to go, and I have 1 FT to do it with. £3.0m in the bank.

            Foster, Federici
            Baines, Cole, Wilson, Cuellar, McCartney
            Cazorla, Kagawa, Pienaar, Michu, Noble
            Tevez, Suarez, Lambert

I already used one FT on Zabaleta to Wilson, but couldn’t decide who to drop Kags for, so missed a price fall on him Saturday night. So who to get in for him?

            A) Mata
            B) Bale
            C) Ben Arfa
            D) Sterling

Getting Sterling, or anyone below £7.5 allows me to do Suarez to Van Persie in future.
Getting anyone £9.1 or below (Mata) allows me to get Rooney for Suarez

I want Newcastle cover too, but can’t see who to drop for Ba

Bale for me. Hazard is the threat against United, not Mata.

              Ba in for Suarez asap.

Interesting point, looking at that I actually really like the look of Bale for the next two, he could grab a hatfull against Soithhampton, and Ba and Van Persie/Rooney make a good swap for Tevez/Suarz at some point.

Any defender below 5.5 for Cole isn't not bad either.

                Right, sorted, Bale it is

Interesting why you think Hazard is specifically the threat rather than Mata? Possibly pace, but United have been undone by just rank bad tracking of players in the area.

I think the understanding and switching position between Hazard, Mata and Oscar is the real problem, the fact that any one of them could unlock the defence with the perfect ball, or dribble and shoot makes them a nightmare to pay against.

But maybe Sir Alex needs some advice from Shaktar?

            Michu Pieenar Hazard Cazorla Sterling

0.1 in the bank. I'm thinking of doing Suarez -> Defoe since I got no Tottenham coverage for their next two. Other option is Michu -> Lennon, but I got Michu at 6.5 and I can just see him getting a yellow in either the City game or the league cup tie vs Liverpool and then come out guns blazing vs Southampton. Not worth the wait, even with the OOP-status?

I'm in the same boat with Michu, Suarez and Pienaar, tricky one. I'm considering holding on to Michu even with the bad fixtures if he keeps playing as a striker. But difficult to drop Pienaar with just one game missed and good fixtures coming up?

No way I'm dropping Pienaar with his best fixtures yet to come. I sorted out my defence last week, it's either Suarez or Michu out. Or none. But it feels silly going into the next two without Tottenham. Leaning towards Suarez -> Defoe for now.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Don't know if I should be worried about Defoe starting though. How should I read the Europa game, if Ade starts Defoe starts this weekend? If Defoe starts and Ade is subbed on at 60+ Defoe starts this weekend? Defoe starts this weekend regardless of what happens in midweek?

So Pienaar red has messed things up a little. Keep or ship out?

            Federici
            Wilson | Baines | Hangeland
Sterling | Ben Arfa | Cazorla | Michu
            Berbatov | Suarez | RVP

            Foster | Cuellar | Demel | Pienaar

            A) Suarez > Ba
            B) Suarez & Michu > Crouch & Bale/ Mata (4pt hit)
            C) Suarez & Pienaar > Crouch & Bale/ Mata (4pt hit)

So I've decided on Ba for Suarez and getting in Berba as well. I already have Rvp. I'm only worried about Aguero? He's due points and City have good fixtures?

            Bit of a dilemma...

            A. Aguero + Ben Arfa

            vs

            B. Ba + Bale

B would cost me a 4 point hit to do this week (already have Barfa)

            GO!

Barfa horribly overrated as an FPL proposition, IMHO. And, at the price, Aguero rotation risk is a stinker. I guess that means B, unless you're willing to stagger the transfers
