Javier Hernandez bags a brace as United claw back a two-goal deficit to see off a spirited Braga at Old Trafford. Oscar scores in Europe once again but his endeavours are not enough to prevent Chelsea from slipping to defeat at Shakhtar. Elsewhere, Arsene Wenger may hand Jack Wilshere some game time this weekend, while Bryan Ruiz remains a doubt for Fulham’s trip to Reading:

Man United 3 Braga 2
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side continued to show little sign of improving at the back – last night’s result means that have now conceded two or more goals in their last three home games in all competitions. With Sunday’s trip to Chelsea in mind, Ferguson dropped Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra from the back-four; Michael Carrick and Alexander Buttner were their respective replacements. Ferguson started with the diamond formation once again, in order to accommodate Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Shinji Kagawa and Javier Hernandez but with United trailing at half-time, Kagawa made way for Nani as United switched to a more conventional shape.

Hernandez has been somewhat unlucky in terms of league starts this term – he produced a goal and assist in his only first XI appearance back in Gameweek 4 – and served a reminder of his capabilities with a pair of goals as the Red Devils came from behind to pick up the points. Kagawa and Tom Cleverley provided the assists for the Mexican’s goals, while Jonny Evans also notched. A third straight win takes United to nine points, with qualification for the knock-out stages (and subsequent European rotation) looking imminent.

Post-match, however, Ferguson revealed Kagawa’s withdrawal was also due to an injury, while Anders Lindegaard is apparently out of the Stamford Bridge showdown with a thumb problem.

“Shinji twisted his knee. We had to take him off. He struggled on for 20 minutes after he got the injury. We’ll assess it in the morning as it’s too early to say what the damage is. I was confident the diamond would be important for us but, when you’re 2-0 down, it’s easy for them to kill the game by playing it out wide. So we had to change things with Nani on the right and [Wayne] Rooney on the left. Kagawa’s injury forced my hand to play Nani as a wide player and it made a difference in terms of their possession.”

Shakhtar 2 Chelsea 1
Roberto Di Matteo made just two changes from the side that saw off Spurs last weekend. John Terry returned to partner David Luiz in central defence as Gary Cahill dropped to the bench, while Eden Hazard surprisingly made way for Frank Lampard – Ramires moved to the right flank, while Lampard slotted in alongside John Obi Mikel. Lampard lasted just 18 minutes before limping off, with Hazard his replacement. Fernando Torres made way for Daniel Sturridge on 70 minutes, while Oscar grabbed his third goal of the Champions League campaign, with Branislav Ivanovic supplying the assist.

Post-match, Di Matteo confirmed Lampard suffered a recurrence of the calf problem that kept him out of the recent England internationals. Any possible absence would be a boost for Hazard’s owners, with the Belgian likely to be on spot-kicks if Lampard is unavailable.

Arsene Wenger has revealed that Jack Wilshere could make an appearance for Arsenal in this weekend’s home clash with QPR. After the midfielder featured in Monday’s U21 win over Everton, his manager admitted:

“There is a chance. He had 90 minutes yesterday, Sagna had 90 minutes, Frimpong had 90 minutes. We’ll see how they recover. We are a little bit in a trap at the moment because he needs to play full games and of course, 48 hours later is too dangerous to play a player, or even put him on the bench, who has not played for such a long time.”

Despite being initially ruled out for last week’s trip to Norwich, Wilshere was an unused sub in the disappointing loss on Saturday evening, as the Gunners tasted defeat for the second time in three Gameweeks. With a Champions League clash against Schalke this evening, it’s likely that Wenger will continue to ease the midfielder back into action – Arsenal now have three home games in the next four but a second-half sub appearance against Mark Hughes’ side looks the likeliest of scenarios for Wilshere after his 14-month absence.

Martin Jol has admitted he is uncertain as to whether Bryan Ruiz will be available for Fulham this weekend. The Costa Rican has been a decent source of creativity for the Cottagers this term, with three assists in five appearances, but missed out in the 1-0 win over Villa on Saturday after picking up a groin problem on international duty last week. With Dimitar Berbatov and Mladen Petric both recovering from injuries to take the front two places, Ruiz’s versatility was expected to earn him a role out wide but with Damien Duff also missing out due to illness, Jol is currently relying on Kieran Richardson and Hugo Rodallega on the flanks ahead of the trip to Reading.

    Begovic looks set to rise to 4.7m tonight/tomorrow....

    Bought Jussi at 4.5m and he's gone to 4.9m.....

    So surely selling Jussi for 4.7m and buying Begovic for 4.6m is a good option considering fixtures, and some form...?

    Other keeper is Stephen Henderson of Ipswich (will fix that later)

          So? You clearly want Mata even though his fixtures are as bad as Nolan's. As a combo the second lot is better imo. But obviously I'd want Mata, just not with Sterling, who's fixtures are also lame from now on + he plays for Liverpool.

              I know he is in stellar form but the problem of which Chelsea mid to get remains. Over the season I expect little between them all, so I plan on getting Oscar in. This week, Hazard is the best option - much more of a threat to United's defence than Mata.

            You could keep Sterling, upgrade someone else and use him as bench fodder. With Nolan you'll have to use a transfer to get him out (IMO) pretty soon.

    Since i already have Begovic and feel the need to free up some funds, which move would you recommend.

    A) Jussi -> Mccarthy
    Begovic will start 95% of the games until the Jan WC and i have McCarthy as back up. Frees up 0.7
    B) Rafael -> NewC
    Rafael looks like a season keeper with just 2 poor fixtures. Newcastle seem to have a good run of themselves but i had Rafael since the start of the season so might lose value if i want him back.

        b or c, can't decide
        But if you don't do B now, you surely won't do it next week either.
        Maybe downgrade Jussi next week if you have two transfers then and still nothing more urgent to do.

        So actually I can decide, C.

    Begovic - Foster
    Baines - Demel - Riise (Gorkss,Davies)
    Hazard - Michu - Cazorla - Pienaar (Guthrie)
    RVP - Tevez - Fletcher

    want to get Ba in for Fletcher but leaves me 0.8 short, whats the best way to free funds?

    A) Hazard -> Mata (-4)
    B) Pienaar -> 6mil mid (Kightly ?)
    C) Pienaar & Hazard out Bale & Walters in (-8)
    D) other? maybe Foster out, would mean playing Guthrie/Gorkss tho

      I came on here telling everyone Guthrie would be one of the fantasy buys of the season...

      Epic fail!

      But seriously, he started last game, now Karacan is crocked so suddenly he might be back for a 2 pointer...

      May not play in the hole, deeper in a 4-4-2 perhaps...

      Brilliant I say!

      Wish I had Sterling though...

      If you're not on a wildcard that would be crazy.

      Even if you were, I dont think downgrading 3 players is worth it to have both Iavn and Baines. Pick one and keep funds up front/midfield.

        6 out of United's next 7 games are away. Rooney is a monster at home, not so much away. RVP will lead the line away much more than he does at home.

    This time 4 years ago Rangers had beaten the German champions at Ibrox , the French champions in France and gained a credible draw against Barcelona at Ibrox for a total 7 points after 3 games in the CL group stage . For this, Rangers were broadly mocked for playing "negative" football.

    Compare to today ........ Celtic have a home point against the Portuguese runners up, a win against the Russian runners up and a defeat to the Spanish runners up for a total of 4 CL group stage points and are lauded as being brave, courageous and unlucky.

    Sorry had to get that off my chest 🙂

    Happy with my lot, but considering a few options. Two frees bank 1.3m and no nightmares just light tinkering. Here's the rabble:

    Howard (McCarthy)
    Hangeland Shawcross Cuellar Clyne Demel
    Santi Mata Nolan Pienaar Al-Ahmadi
    Torres Tevez RVP

    Thinking of doubling on Stoke as Pienaar is out this week...

    1.Howard>Bego, would leave 2.2m for getting Ivanovic next week
    2.Clyne>Wilson and save 0.8m

    ...or if I was ever going to sell Torres this could be the week as he plays Utd.

    3.Torres>Pog and Al-Ahmadi>Bale and play Pog whilst Pienaar benched. Next week 3-5-2 Pog 1st sub.

    I've had this Torres demon that we all have had whenever we own him since I started him in GW1! I can't bring myslef to sell! Seeing as Utd are dodgy at the back he could score this week... I quite like doubling on Chels too. So I'm leaning towards options 1 or 2. Thoughts?

        Decided not to get Wilson, may get Bego as I've realised with the 2.2m I can get Aguero for Tevez if needs be which will be sexy paired with RVP. May just waste the transfer this week as Howard could well keep Liverpool out and I'm covered for a Stoke-Sunderland 0-0 both ways. 🙂

        And my bench player Al-Ahmadi is home vs Norwich ha ha 🙂

      Do you really need foster and begovic?

        They really aren't that expensive to rotate.

          Someone suggested getting rid of Foster for a 4m. Hadn't even crossed my mind tbh.

      Would be tempted to have Cuellar ahead of Rafael, more CS potential IMO.

      Other than that, looks decent.

      Dont get it why would people play Gorks over Rafael. If United is to concede, it doesnt mean Reading will 100% keep a cs. You got rafael in for his attacking threats anyway right? Dont see why you would not play him every week then.

        I'm playing Gorkss for this one single game. Fulham are poor away from home. I'm fine with benching.

    Anyone got anything to say about this:

    A) Vertonghen and Wilson (I already have Begovic)
    B) Vertonghen and Hughes
    C) Lescott and Caulker
    D) Cahill and Caulker

    Please help me. I’m an idiot. Thanks.

      None. Why do you want Spurs defensive cover?

      All bad choices there apart from Wilson.

        Having said that, A does look nice. But Vertonghen isn't worth it for me. Doubt he will deliver anywhere near the attacking returns we were expecting.

      A sounds good, B sounds decent. I'm doubling on Stoke defence.
