The Saints go limping on, suffering another damaging defeat at the hands of a solid showing from Steve Clarke’s Baggies. Here’s the Stock Check from tonight’s concluding Gameweek 10 encounter…

On The Up

Peter Odemwingie
Without a goal in his last five league appearances, the Nigerian struck a superb brace to offer a reminder of his former Fantasy glories. Odemwingie notched 15 goals and 9 assists in his debut Premier League season but struggled to find double figures for goals last term, often employed in a wider role and with limited starts. That has continued this term, with Steve Clarke handing him just four starts so far.

The West Brom Defence
Having gone four matches without a clean sheet, the Baggies were at their resilient best tonight with the midfield working tirelessly to protect a solid back four unit. West Brom have kept four clean sheets at home this term and the likes of Ben Foster in goal, along with Liam Ridgewell and Gareth McAuley go on offering value. They do have three away games in four, four in the next six. West Brom have conceded in every away trip this season.

Going Down

Rickie Lambert
Earlier in the season, the Saints striker looked to be the budget striker of choice – a brace in the 4-1 home win over Villa taking him to four goals in four starts. Since then, Lambert has gone five games without a goal or assist as the Saints struggle for a Premier League foothold.

Romelu Lukaku
Relegated to the bench to make way for the impressive Shane Long, the on-loan striker is struggling to gain the starts he needs to make a lasting impression. When introduced, Lukaku looks a handful with the potential to offer explosive returns. However, Long’s workrate was on show again tonight and he continues to have a grip on the starting role in Clarke’s preferred 4-5-1 formation.

James Morrison
The Scot missed out tonight having suffered “a slight niggle†in training according to Steve Clarke – we know little more about the injury, although we can presume that Morrison will remain an early doubt for the weekend trip to Wigan.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

When everyone's fit, Gera, Odemwingie, Fortune, Dorrans and Brunt are fighting for the two wide slots.

Odemwingie scored twice tonight, and Fortune only plays very occasionally so I'd say Gera, Dorrans and Brunt are rotating for one place.

      In short, no!

Tonight Brom did a classic counterattacking job on Southampton. Up against a side that loves possession and playing through midfield, two banks of four, pressed the central midfielders with zonal marking in the centre and forced them into errors before the moves start. Broke down the flanks at pace exposing the defensively weak Southampton fullbacks. I'm convinced now that the weakest link in Southampton is their two central midfielders who are defensively naive and fail to protect the back four, plus fail to distribute the ball to the attacking four efficiently enough. Hence Southampton often feel like a broken team with 6 at the back separated from four at the front. They resorted to long balls repeatedly tonight because they gave up crossing the midfield gap.

Sure the Southampton back four aren't solid but until they sort out the middle two they will be exposed mercilessly, and the front four isolated. If they had spent their summer cas (they were 7th biggest spenders in Europe this window?!) on someone like De Guzman/Dembele/even Barry to anchor midfield, they'd be better.

Yeah pretty much, the money on Ramirez and J-Rod should of been spent bringing in a couple of decent experienced defenders or loans and an experienced striker. Dawson, Reo-Coker, N'Zonzi, Diame, Dann and I'm sure loads in Europe were available.

Yep, Diame and NZonzi are solid. Though a card magnet even PARKER would have offered more in midfield if paired with a technical cm to bring the ball forward. Anderson on loan? Frimpong on loan? 😆

Are people planning on shipping any of their Everton assets after their next 3 decent fixtures, or have Messrs Baines and Fellaini become season keepers?

Baines, peanut and jelly are staying until January Wildcard for me. May even stay after that as that's when Everton start playing well...

I think Baines is a reasonable option vs. anyone. I hesitate to call anybody a season keeper but unless he gets taken off set-pieces or bombing forward then he's as close to it as I can see.
