Few men would envy the task of filling Cristiano Ronaldo’s golden slippers. When the Portuguese prima donna eloped from Manchester to Madrid in the summer of 2009, a club accustomed to stepping out with the Premier League’s prom queen could be forgiven for not immediately embracing the wholesome qualities of his replacement..

Doggedly supplying that deficit of glamour with industry and unselfishness since his arrival, Antonio Valencia has forged virtue of necessity and wrought himself a hard-won place in the hearts of the fans. If the Stretford End still secretly dreams of step-overs past, it wakes gladly divorced from the illusion that the value of a final ball depends on any preceding pirouettes.

Investment in the United midfield has been pregnant with rotational pitfalls since Ronaldo’s departure, but with Nani out of favour and new acquisition Shinji Kagawa deployed centrally or wide left, Valencia is currently relieved of credible understudies for his blooming duet with Rafael on the right. With four assists to his credit already in an injury-interrupted start and only a baffling, if hilarious, miskick robbing him of a tap-in against Arsenal two weeks ago, a big haul may be just around the corner for the former Wigan man as the goals flow and fixtures ease for the Reds.

Averaging a gnat’s whisker under three strikes a game since their opening day defeat at Everton, a run comprising (nor, QPR, WHM, rdg) in the next four Gameweeks seems likely to further augment that impressive average. Still smarting from last season’s goal-difference title defeat at the hands of their noisy neighbours, Ferguson has publicly set the pass mark at 100 notches on the goal post this time out and, with four goals and 14 assists last year, Valencia certainly has the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) pedigree to profit from a more ruthless offensive philosophy.

With the likes of Gareth Bale, Eden Hazard and Santi Cazorla somewhat treading water at the pricy end of the midfield spectrum, Fantasy managers may feel more at liberty to chance their arm on less celebrated candidates. Whilst out-and-out wingers have taken something of a back seat to “in the hole” midfield picks thus far, few wide men have access to the quality of the targets Valencia enjoys. Currently priced at 8.6 in FPL (7.9 in the Sky Sports game), the Ecuadorian dynamo looks primed to buck the trend and deliver strong value from out wide as United look to go forth and conquer over the coming weeks.

A question for those of you who are bored and doing their best to avoid actually doing some work. If you sell all your players how much money do you have to spend?

I'm at 103.1, pretty measly i think compared to some.

I have a feeling it could well be one of those weeks that the non-RVP owners cherish and cling in to if he is rested or only gets an assist or something, but Suarez would be the only player I'd captain ahead of him and I don't have him.

I'm tempted to take the armband off RVP for the first time since GW2 or 3. Worried that, if he has a slight knock, he could be restricted to a cameo, and Berba looks very tempting. I'll probably bottle it though.

As Berbilly mentioned below....people are already paying 11.7-12.0m for him, and hes taking up a centre-forward spot and is taking up a lot of cash for a player who week after week seems to drop further back.

Almost like already paying a tonne for an OOP forward in the wrong direction. Still tasty is Shrek.

Most definitely. A proven playmaker, goalscorer, organiser, string-puller, poacher, and attacking brain playing in midfield, and (not nailed) on penalties (regardless of his fairly poor conversion rate).

Sure he's been awesome I didn't mean he's only had one game I just think the last game is so fresh in everyones mind that suddenly they think he's a much better prospect than ba. Ba was essential less than a week ago!

Yeah I agree in that sense, bit of a knee-jerk feeling on here but that happens with everything. Just a few days ago people were either selling Berbatov or ignoring completely due to his fixtures. Now every man and his dog has him.

Ba was never essential. Ba only became more appealing when Senegal didnt qualify for ANC. Cisse could take over the scoring soon enough. Ba could go on a dry spell. Newcastle are currently crap and aren't creative whatsoever.

Berba over Ba until the cows return for me.........

Alreet lads. I got rid of fellaini, not just because of his injury, but also because I thought mirallas was going to play in the hole, with fellaini dropping back. This appears to not have been the case!! Where exactly is mirallas playing in the everton formation? Fellaini is nailed on in the hole. Right? Although it pains me, I will probably just do Pieanaar > Fellaini this week, barring any new injuries. Am I right in thinking that he has already gone up 0.3m this week? I have the exact money for the switch

I don't really understand why people are saying Sterling is of great value...I know he is a good young nailed on player and he does play well, but in FPL terms so far he has just delivered 1 goals and 2 assists, 35 points in 11 matches, nothing related to greatness...

If you know what value means, you'd know why he is. 1 goal and 2 assists for a midfielder of around 5m. 4.5 if you got him in time, and a nailed-on mid. I can't see why he's not great value.

Yes is the answer. You just have to accept that there will be games when stering looks the better on paper but you have to commit to going with your main men and accept that you may miss out on the occasional sterling haul if unlucky.
All good teams are based on loyalty to your big players and not changing them when a couple of weeks of low scores.

It's really your way of making the team. If you're comfortable, you should do it, has high risk, and thus, can give you high returns too. If ou can take it, you should.

It is a slightly risky line up, both Walcott and Valencia could give you double figures any given week, but could also just as easily offer 1 or 2 points. Silva IMO is a risk also in that people are optimistic that he will produce rather than certain. So for his cost I am not sure he is a gamble worth having. Add to that the concern about ba injury and reduced returns of late. I would prefer if only two at most of my front 8 were puntish/speculative. There are enough other player to give regular returns to allow that risk

Fair point but it's the Silva bit that divides us. I really do think Silva will fast become the second most consistent FPL player after VP so for me the price will be justified. The thing about Val/Wal hitting blanks applies to almost every player out there to be fair so I think it is the potential to hit the jackpot that should be focused upon. From the front 8 I stated I think only 3 will be worries points wise at the very very most. Otherwise I think the average number of players I will be sceptical of getting me goods points throughout the season in each individual week will be 1.5

I agree they all have good potential , silva more so than the others. My strategy is to have 5 or 6 out of the 8 that are big ownership players and season keeper who perform regular and at most have 2 speculative ones from the Valencia/ Walcott grouping. So it is really down to who you feel falls into that category. I have convinced myself so far that city cover isn't a requirement so probably sways my opinion on there players.

My transfer decisions are being clouded this week by fear of an insane derby between Arsenal and Spurs. A bit like the United v Arsenal match when subconsciously everyone's heart was expecting an 8-2 massacre but their head was saying hedge your bets. The odds are well against a 5-2 style game happening again IMO, I think Harry just lost the plot completely. But just like the risk of RVP being rested last year, or Cazorla scoring the week you sell him, it's hard to ignore completely too.

OK, just checked the ARS - TOT scores in the last 4 seasons and also the reverse TOT - ARS fixture.

      ARS 4 - 4 TOT
      ARS 3 - 0 TOT
      ARS 2 - 3 TOT
      ARS 5 - 2 TOT

Average: 5.75 goals per game. League average 2.8 goals per game.

      TOT 0 - 0 ARS
      TOT 2 - 1 ARS
      TOT 3- 3 ARS
      TOT 2 - 1 ARS

Average: 3 goals per game. League average 2.8 goals per game.

Arsenal at home looks absolutely monstrous for goals, maybe it's more than gut instinct.

Exactly, I got him in for captaincy security and he has delivered it. Switching it would be greedy and asking for punishment.

I always find myself in these kind of logic dilemmas where short-term logic contradicts long-term logic. Strictly speaking I should captain whoever scores the most this week. But if I got RVP to captain him every week, I should persist with that as he has fulfilled his duty.

It's funny this site had such worries over RVP being rested last year. I don't think I even thought about it much. It's one of those things that will drive you mad. I just meant ignorance is bliss sometimes. I had no reason to believe RVP would be rested last year so never thought about it much. Whereas some people on here didn't captain him against Blackburn because Wenger said something that 'could be interpreted a certain way' in a press conference.

I'll hold my hand up here, I thought there was a slight risk of him being rested after Wenger's comments and got into a flame war with someone insisting he would start. In the end I captained him and got pointage and that guy was ultimately completely right. If we replayed that situation 100 times would he be right every time though?

My point is sometimes it's best to be a little naive than to speculate. Speculation will lead you to actually believing you are inside Wenger's head and you're choosing the team and the outcome. Last year he would have been correct 99% of the time. But it doesn't matter who is correct.

It's still a ridiculous comparison. He's already scored more goals than Ramsey did over the entire season last year. And he's playing a similar position. Add to that Cazorla scored 9 goals last year. 1 less than Bale. And everyone creams themselves over Bale's goalscoring abilities...

Yeah, Cazorla's not SO bad. He's averaged 5.14 points per 90 minutes and Ramsey managed 3.83 points per 90 minutes last year. It's just his position and job that make the comparison easier.

Would you not be happy as an English fan that a player believes he is as good as Messi/Ronaldo? What's wrong with what he supposedly said? Footballers have said worse things...!!

Also Rodgers is easy to mock, he takes himself so seriously it's hard not to imitate him in a funny way.

I find it depressing how ability and ego so often go hand in hand. The truly intelligent don't go on about their ability. What every manager and fan dies for are talented yet humble individuals who are completely committed to the cause. Even as a Gooner I have immense respect for Scholes, Giggs, Lampard, Gerrard, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, etc etc.

        I hope Zaha was misquoted.

I could name 3 strikers better than Balotelli right now... 😀

By the way, I think Balotelli will start this weekend...you heard it here first.

I remember Cassano saying in 10 years everyone will be talking about him and no one would know who Michael Owen is. Got it half right.

Owen is a former European footballer of the year. He was wrong on both counts.

Stock check on the preseason rotations, how is everyones hardwork doing?

GK rotation has net me 48 points or 4.3 ppg.

Three-way rotation in the backline has net me 40 points or 3.6ppg.

    Doesn't seem too shabby 😀

Good stuff and a little embarrassing for me. I didn't stick with my defender rotation and ditched a few that looked like duds, playing it week by week.

I switched my GK rotation in my wildcard to Jussi and Bego and never looked back. They are actually running at 4.75ppg.

Defenders I haven't changed and thought it worthwhile to measure to see if all the rotation planning we do is actually worthwhile. The three-way rotation is SUN/WBA/RDG

Went Foster/Begovic in GW2 and have managed 4.44 ppg since then so happy with that.

You called the three way rotation well.

I think short term, Walcott could be a better option than Bale given that Dembele won't be there..

And Dempsey will come close enough but Bale will outscore him

AVB does a lot of weird things. The 3-month Lloris saga is particularly baffling, given that he doesn't actually want him to be Spurs' goalkeeper

Yeah I don't understand why AVB joined if he didn't want to play in goal...he's a quality keeper...leave the coaching to Llloris for god's sake!

I support AVB more than your average - most of what has gone wrong isn't really his fault. we've had loads of injuries to deal with but the Lloris thing I do not get. We've kept 1 league CS the whole season in the only game Lloris has started. I like Brad I really do but Lloris must start.

Sigurdsson has been abject thus far. So has Dempsey to be fair but with injuries I think AVB felt we needed Dempsey's experience.
