Demba Ba bags a brace before limping off as Newcastle register their first win since Gameweek 9. Alan Pardew is optimistic over his side’s injury woes, while Wigan are facing a defensive crisis this weekend, with Gary Caldwell and Maynor Figueroa both set to sit out the home clash against QPR due to suspension…

Ba Back On Track
Alan Pardew chose to roll out a 4-3-3 last night but unlike last season, it was Papiss Cisse who moved to the flank, shifted to the right as his compatriot kept the central role up top. Ba repaid his manager’s faith with a deadly double ending a run of four straight defeats for the Magpies and taking his tally to 10 for the season already – with a couple of assists also thrown in, he has played a part on 12 of Newcastle’s 16 goals this season, an incredible contribution. With the maximum FPL bonus also in the bag, he now sits on 90 points – only Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez have produced more as forwards.

While Ba’s guaranteed game time and kind 8.2 price tag had looked set to see his current 26% ownership take a rise, he was then forced off with a knock with four minutes left on the clock – Alan Pardew seemed optimistic post-match, however, that the problem is just stiffness, with Ba now afforded a few days before the trip to Fulham next Monday. If he fails to make it for that one, however, Newcastle then have City, United, Arsenal and Everton amongst their following five fixtures – enough to perhaps persuade Fantasy owners to think twice over potential acquisition.

Further Worries for Pardew
With first-team regulars such as Hatem Ben Arfa, Steven Taylor and Yohan Cabaye already on the sidelines through injury, Alan Pardew has more concerns to consider ahead of the weekend. In addition to Ba’s problem, Cheick Tiote was subbed off at the break after picking up an injury while Davide Santon lasted five minutes of the second-half before limping off with what appeared to be a hip problem. Post-match, though, the Newcastle boss remained confident of their availability…

“I told the players not to take any risks. The three who came off are precautionary – we think all three will make Fulham.”

With little to no room for rest and rotation ahead of the busy festive period – it may well be a case of “if you’re fit, you’ll play” as the Gameweeks come thick and fast over December. Any possible absence for Ba may afford Papiss Cisse a chance to be fielded through the centre in the 4-3-3 that saw him rack up 13 goals in the second half of last season; with a goal and assist over his last two, he may be finally starting to pick up in performance after a hugely disappointing second season on Tyneside.

Suspension Worries for Wigan
Gary Caldwell shook off a hamstring injury to appear for the first time since Gameweek 12 but the Wigan skipper fell foul of the referee and picked up his fifth caution of the season – earning him an automatic one-match ban for Saturday’s visit of basement-dwellers QPR. Roberto Martinez will also be without another defensive regular after Maynor Figueroa received his marching orders for denying Papiss Cisse a goalscoring opportunity – his challenge led to the Magpies first goal, with Ba resultantly slotting home from the spot. With fellow centre-halves Antolin Alcaraz and Ivan Ramis currently injured, Wigan have a real defensive headache on the horizon – Martinez may decide to revert to four at the back at the weekend unless the current situation eases off. According to reports this morning, Wigan are considering an appeal against Figueroa’s dismissal.

Wigan’s Travel Sickness Continues
A clean sheet for the hosts seemed a little unlikely last night, given their recent defensive woes. Newcastle headed into last night’s match have kept out their opponents just once in the first 14 Gameweeks but their visitors’ woeful away form ensured Tim Krul remained unbeaten. The Latics have now scored just twice in their last six road trips, collecting three points – a real worry for Martinez as he looks to steer his side clear of the drop zone.

You have the stand out options in Michu and Fella already. And they too will could also quickly go on dry spells. The others are as you say, seem injury prone or streaky but you just have to try and manage their form/fixtures very keenly. Know what I mean?! It's v late and am tired... but I'm thinking of guys like Walcott; Sess; Valencia; HBA etc...

Other idea might be just to put Michu in for one of them right now before he goes up to 9.5.

Walcott should be rested mid-week, so no worries there. Can you afford to bench Bale for one game? Walcott, Fellaini, Michu, Sterling is decent starting mid for this GW. I'm not a fan of Suarez, but I reckon that's just my blue bias.

Judging by Bale's reaction when picking up that injury (immediate pain, limited range of motion of the leg), it looks like he's torn it and we're looking at him missing 2 weeks minimum.

Anyone holding regardless? I just don't fancy any of the alternatives!

Are you an expert on hamstring injuries? I'm definitely not but a bit of research suggests that his reaction signals that it's likely to be more than a minor strain.

when you pull your hamstring or its torn its like a bullet shot and very painful. he would have fell down like a sack of potatoes. his reaction was more like a hamstring strain. grade 1-2 possibly.

Not sure about falling like a sack of potatoes but he definitely pull up immediately, grabs his hamstring and sits down. I guess we're speculating anyway. I'll wait for news for sure before selling him but I'd like to know either way so I can bring Shorey in before he rises!

for what its worth. my prediction is that he is 200 per cent out for everton game. for swansea he will be touch and go. its whether avb and bale will want to risk it.

he has every chance of playing against swansea but could also reinjure it if he plays and be out for 4-6weeks. hamstrings are a funny muscle. you feel like your 100 per cent recovered but it aint.

Any of the revised fixtures in Feburary mean a blank or double gameweek for any team?

Do a bit of research and let us know! Probably just moving from Saturday to Sunday/Monday to show it live on TV and won't affect the GWs

Any news on whether Ruiz is back this week? Berba's form is dire without him.

Am contemplating taking a hit for Mackie for Berba considering the state of the Wigan defence this weekend!

    REPOST2

In TFF game, 15/30 transfers remaining, my team is:

    Begovic
    Enrique Mertesacker Ivanovic
    Bale Michu Fellaini Cazorla
    RVP Ba Suarez

Top of ML by like 40 points.

Thoughts on Bale + Ba > Rooney + Dempsey (or any other midfielder that isnt Mata/Silva), if Bale and Ba are out for longer than a week (TFF game has no subs)?

20 left by January?! Wish I had considered this before knee jerks early in the season. So you think I could stay top with Bale out and Ba maybe out (and Suarez suspended)? Just kinda hoping my opponents in ML have Bale/Ba/Silva/Walcott/Fletcher/Suarez who may all be out...

This game is all about patience. So you may have a poor week and maybe even drop from top spot BUT there is over half a season left. Also the most important difference between TFF & FPL are that the FA cup games count and therefore more transfers are needed for the second part of the season. 15 is alot used and unless you have someone injured for over 3 weeks id keep the same side until after Xmas.

Posted this earlier, but would like some more opinions!

Thinking of doing Pienaar > Gardner this week, which allows me to upgrade Fletcher to Defoe/Giroud next week and still have money to upgrade at the back the coming weeks. This means using the Gardner/Sterling rotation up until the January WC.

Dropped from 80,000 to 300,000 in the last 4 weeks. Eesh. My lowest rank for almost 3 years. Could really use some help lads.

    Begovic
    Enrique, Cuellar, Davies
    Cazorla, Walcott, Fellaini, Sess, Puncheon
    RVP, Suarez, Berb

1 free, 1.6 in the bank.

Plan was to do Cazorla > Bale, but he got injured.
The obvious move is Cazorla > Michu, should I do it? The only thing that worries me is Cazorla seems to be the Dempsey of this year, not going more than 4 GWs without scoring. He also has much better fixtures. But my decisions have been terrible over the last few weeks so what do you guys think?

Thanks in advance for anyone who replies, really appreciate it 🙂

This has happened a lot to me recently.

Amongst the hits I've been talked out of on this site on Saturday mornings were Fellaini, Sess, Enrique and Defoe.

Each netted double digit hauls whilst I racked up 2's and 1's with those I kept 🙁

Anyone risking giving the armband to Sess? I had practically stapled it to his arm before the Norwich game but having major doubts after it.

With Fletcher possibly out that could play in his favour I suppose...

Apart from GK (Mignolet), we have exactly the same team - I also have Suarez and Bale benched. You'll have to put Gorkss in there and hope he plays some part in Reading's double. Or ignore the DGW teams and use your free transfer to get Caulker, Jenkinson or any other decent defender below 5m. Swansea at home to Norwich - Ben Davies a good budget buy.

This is the thing I'm chewing over...

I honestly think there are slightly better options in Southampton lot but will definitely be keeping him until my WC for sure

He works well rotating with Sterling.

McAnuff is definitely a short term player

It's up to you decide between Maloney and Puncheon.

I've been putting off Maloney > Puncheon for weeks now...

I can swap Baloney for Sess - it's for a hit but I still reckon it's a good move to avoid the price drop and eradicate all memory of a bad transfer in. Any reasons not to?

Is 3 Sunderland, 1 Reading too much for the DGW?

Thinking about bringing in Fellaini and Sessegnon for a hit.

My thinking is that, if you're going to take a hit, do it for a DGW player so that it's minimised less. Will probably do Sess -> Bale soon after.

    Mignolet
    Rangel - Cuellar - Shorey
    Sterling - Fellaini - Michu - Sessegnon - Silva
    Berbatov - RVP

    Jussi - Cameron - B Jones - Suarez

I have Sess and Fed for the DGW

The only player I'd consider brining in for a hit is Fletcher. He'll definitely make up the 4pt hit with 2x2 appearance points.

He is also the most likely player to grab a goal or two
