634x258 Suspensions

Four players fell foul of the five-yellows limit in Gameweek 20, with Gareth Bale the most high profile protagonist to earn a one-match suspension ahead of a home match with Reading. West Ham pair Kevin Nolan and James Collins also sit on the naughty step for their game against Norwich at Upton Park, as does Bradley Johnson of Norwich City…

Despite seeing red on Saturday, Steven Nzonzi will be available for Stoke’s trip to City after the club lodged an appeal for wrongful dismissal last weekend. The midfielder was set to serve a three-match suspension for a challenge on Southampton’s Jack Cork but he’ll take his place in a likely rearguard effort at City in tomorrow’s clash.

Conflicting reports surround Samir Nasri’s availability. The Frenchman was handed a straight red for his “headbutt” attempt on Norwich’s Seb Bassong at the weekend – while the local press reported the club had decided to appeal, the Mail, however, have suggested that City won’t appeal. Earlier today, Roberto Mancini admitted he was uncertain whether the club would take any action – a three-match ban would see the Frenchman miss an FA Cup clash with Watford and league trip to former club Arsenal, in addition to the Potters’ clash.

The New Year brings a little more leeway now, with the Suspension Tightrope loosening considerably. Players now have to accrue 10 yellow cards to trigger an automatic suspension – if they reach that landmark by the second Sunday in April (Gameweek 33), they will be handed a two-match ban. So far, there are five players just three bookings away from – Luis Suarez, James Perch, Angel Rangel, Craig Gardner and Mark Noble have all received seven cautions apiece. Our sidebar widget has been updated accordingly and will be tracking all the way through to the April 14 date.

Elsewhere this week, Marouane Fellaini returns to the Everton fold for a trip to Newcastle after completing a three-match ban, while Mike Williamson will be hoping to help shore up the Magpies defence after he sat out the 7-3 loss at Arsenal due to a one-match ban. Stoke will be relieved Ryan Shawcross and Geoff Cameron are back in contention for the trip to City, having conceded three at home to Southampton in the duo’s enforced absence at the weekend. Fabian Delph is available for Villa once again, as Paul Lambert tries to address his side’s woeful form as they head to Swansea tomorrow.

          It's not certain that Michu is fit. His ankle was pretty swollen after the injury. In my experience, it normally takes about 2 weeks to recover. Still a fitness test to ho for Michu.

          i did indeed. took a 4pt hit, cazorla->walcott and sterling->fellaini

          my only apprehension over getting walcott in was his minutes, but i think as long as he stays fit he is nailed on up front or on the wing and will get points in either position. cazorla been a good servant but walcott is the man now for arsenal (fpl wise)

      If you're 100 points behind (good) opponents, at what point do you start making differentiating captain choices?

        Having contract issues seems to do a lot for a players performance and it isn't something I've seen discussed on here. This season Ba, Walcott, Fellaini and recently Lampard and Fellaini have all had rumours circulating around them and they've been bringing in the points whenever they play. It was similar with RVP last season who was being linked with various big money moves with his contract coming to its final year at Arsenal.

        Something to consider in the future for other notable players if their contract is coming to an end, providing they are going to be starting of course. Any thoughts on this?

          Good point that. I seem to remember Rosicky appearing from nowhere sometime last season, playing very well for a few games and then disappearing again after he signed a new one.

            Yeah, he was actually a good FPL option for a few weeks but nobody would have expected it. Really, it shouldn't be surprising that contract/money issues leads to better performances.

        Help desperately needed. Is this worth a transfer or two anywhere?

        Begovic

        Skrtel // Cuellar // Sagna // Demel

        Walcott // Michu // McAnuff

        RVP // Suarez // Berbatov

        Bench: Bale, Nolan, Clyne

        Considering taking a hit so I don’t have to play McAnuff and I really want Fellaini back, but I’ll want both Bale and Nolan in the coming weeks, so should I leave it? 1FT, 0 banked.

            Well that's true you could roll a dice and captain a random player and get lucky but Michu scores against anyone and I see him as the safest bet for captain choice this GW, if you aren't going to captain him at home against Villa you're never going to captain him. He has an easier fixture than Man U and has almost scored as many points as RVP anyway and is in better form - 2nd only to Walcott even though he didn't play at the weekend

        I can't afford Gibbs without dropping one of Bale or Mata.

        I'm thinking of going with just Cazorla, Walcott, Jussi, Demel and Cole for the DGW. No Arsenal defender for me. Am I making a mistake?

            If I don't sell him, I'll have to play Sterling and Puncheon, which I don't fancy. I could get rid of Sterling, but I'm waiting for Nolan to return to get him for the DGW. I was thinking, over the next 3 weeks:

            Bale -> Mata
            Sterling -> Nolan
            Silva -> Cazorla

        Not really big into all the team value or anything.. but is the ten day break a good chance to play your wildcard and increase the value of a team a lot giving you a better chance of squeezing in more big hitters? Like.. bringing in all the players at the top of the fiso chart.. and selling them at the last minute for the players you actually want?

          I did that in the first international break and it was a total washout. I made a measly £0.3m and it was a horrid stressful time, trying to juggle cash-cows with players I wanted to keep.

          It depends really on how many players you want to keep. The more you already have the less money you will make because you'll have fewer slots and funds to juggle with.

            The limiting factor is that the players you actually want will be rising just as fast as the players you don't want so you won't get a chance to make much money.
