He may be currently sitting as lowly as 25th in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) rankings for forward but there’s reason to be optimistic for Newcastle’s Papiss Cissé. With former team mate and compatriot Demba Ba now nursing a broken nose and sweating over rotation issues under Rafa Benitez, Cissé is once again afforded the platform to shine as the pivot in the Magpies’ attack.

With just 66 points so far, there’s no doubt Cissé’s prospects during the first half of the season were severely hampered by Ba’s form. After an incredible first Premier League season in 2011/12, which started last January when he joined Newcastle from Bundesliga side SC Freiburg, the potential for him to rack up a sizeable haul over the remaining 13 games is clear. Last term, he amassed an incredible 105 points over 1,829 minutes, netting 13 goals, two assists and 20 FPL bonus points. Spectacular goals, such as his second in Newcastle’s 2-0 victory away to Chelsea last season will live long in the memory.

So far this time round, Cissé has scored five times, assisted one and collected just four FPL bonus points. In addition he has yet to achieve a double digit haul, with the eight points away to Aston Villa in Gameweek 24 his biggest tally so far. With Newcastle splashing their cash across the English Channel to bring in a raft of new French recruits, however, we sense a resurgence for the north east side. Moussa Sissoko, the defensive midfielder turned marauding number 10, has already caught the eye with his brace at home to Chelsea in Gameweek 25. There are clearly goals in this traditionally attacking side and with Cissé nailed on as the central striker in light of Ba’s departure, he may well be set to plunder the points again.

The upcoming schedule plays a significant part in our refresh of the Watchlist rankings. Having notched back-to-back wins over Villa and Chelsea, Alan Pardew’s side are on the cusp of a superb run of games which hands them a superb chance to continue their climb up the table. After a tricky trip to Tottenham, the Magpies welcome Southampton, Stoke, Fulham and Sunderland to St James’ Park in the following eight and also travel to the likes of Swansea, Wigan and West Brom.

On the back of such a stellar debut season, Cissé’s price does count against him, though. Coming in at 8.8 in the FPL game (£9.3m in the Sky Sports game) he certainly offers less value compared to the 6.0 priced Sissoko (£6.3m in the Sky game) but Cissé’s pedigree could just give him the edge. In addition to his Newcastle goal tally of 18 he has scored 37 goals over his 65 appearances for SC Freiburg, 36 during a four-year spell at Metz and 11 goals in 22 appearances for Senegal. With three goals in his last seven, Cissé is starting to hint at a return to form and with Sissoko’s bandwagon keeping the attention away, the forward may well prove a canny differential acquisition with an ownership of just over 3%.

Nice article Jonty. The problem i have with Cisse is that he has an awkward price to fit in. If i chose Papiss/Silva over Aguero/Sissoko there would be a horrible balance with 4 huge midfielders.

I have Suarez Sturridge GJ Davies Michu for DGW. I'm pretty set on Suarez -> Kun for the blank, the second transfer out is a bit more iffy. I'd like some Newcastle players, that schedule is RIDICILOUS. How about GJ -> Debuchy? Out of those players, GJ is the one I'd be least reluctant to lose as his three games after DGW are "blank - wig - TOT".

Yeah, I agree, I like their attack more than defense. It's mostly about who I'd be giving up, my reasoning is that I can't really see myself ditching any of the others, but I can live without GJ for a couple of games as his schedule isn't THAT good.

Brought in Sturridge this week and, injuries permitting, I'm pretty happy to keep him for the long-term. Decent (if not spectacular) fixtures over the next 8 or so but what he definitely has is freshness which, for a player with pace, could wreak havoc on tired defenses in the second half of the season. His loan to Bolton a couple of years back demonstrated exactly this. He's also a great finisher in my opinion.

    Repost: Anyone care to comment?

I think it is conceivable that ALL the following matches are moved:
    Arsenal v Everton
    Man City v Wigan
    Fulham v Chelsea
Man U v Everton or Reading v Villa)

Clearly this will cause us all problems.

Since GW29 midweek is a champions league night UEFA will NOT allow midweek games to be played. However, there are examples where league games have occured during champions league weeks such as last years merseyside derby. But this did cause some fuss and the threat of UEFA sanctions. I remember in Italy when an entire set of games had to be moved to midweek, they had to be played afternoon/tea time (do Italians have teatime?) to prevent them clashing with championsleague matches.

But last season, the midweek wasn't a CL week so there was no issue moving the games to midweek. So I don't think it is correct to say "just as they did last year".

Not true. UEFA refused to allow Sunderland v Reading to played midweek earlier this season as it clashed with CL. They had to play it in december.

Good Afternoon, who do I hand the gloves to this week?

    Mignolet (ARS) or Federici (stk)

Currently on Mignolet but Stoke are quite poor recently.

Also, is Davies, Michu and Suarez enough DGW cover? Only possible option is to do Bale to Gerrard but with the blank next week I'm not too sure.

    Mig
    Davies, Cameron, Zabaleta
Michu (v), Bale, Walcott, Mata, Fellaini
    RVP, Suarez (c)

    Anichebe, Bertrand, Pearce

Sunderland have been very strong at home recently but Arsenal obviously have goals in them.

Stoke vs Reading on the other hand is likely to be a very low scoring affair. Hmmm.

I don't get the hype. He's a great player but not showing extra-ordinary talent.

I'd like to see him improve his defensive abilities and finishing to be able to call him a holistic midfielder. He can't be played as a CAM or DM.

I disagree, he certainly can be played as a CAM. His performance prior to the DGW showed that much. He's a decent enough tackler, and reads the game well enough to make a fair amount of interceptions. Excellent passer, drives through the centre of the park fantastically well.

Actually it's his very versatility that makes him wasted at CAM or DM. It's because he has greater defensive ability, passing ability, dribbling ability and finishing than his equivalents in each position, that he is best used in all of them.
