It hasn’t taken long for Moussa Sissoko to establish himself as a key component of Alan Pardew’s new-look Newcastle side. The departure of Demba Ba, allied with an influx of new arrivals, has had an instant impact on the Magpies’ fortunes after a disastrous first few months of the campaign.

Sissoko arrived on these shores with a reputation as a box-to-box midfielder; 20 goals in seven seasons at former club Toulouse suggested he would chip in occasionally but a move to the advanced central midfield role behind Papiss Cisse in a 4-2-3-1 has seen the Frenchman flourish. In a situation similar to the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Michu earlier this season, Sissoko’s penchant for Fantasy points and mid-price appeal has already got the bandwagon in overdrive – almost 100,000 clambered aboard prior to last Saturday’s trip to Tottenham.

So far, Sissoko has rewarded his owners with attacking returns in all three appearances for Pardew’s side. An assist for Cisse’s goal at Villa was followed by a brace on his home debut in a stirring comeback win over Chelsea; the midfielder also teed up Yoan Gouffran for the Magpies’ equaliser at the Lane last weekend. It’s not just individual returns which have stood out, though; Sissoko has afforded Newcastle a greater physical presence and a real drive through the middle, with those wins over Villa and Chelsea the first time this season the club have won back-to-back league matches. Speaking to the press on Tuesday afternoon, Sissoko admitted:

“It has gone off smoothly. I have had a lot of fun. The Frenchmen who came to Newcastle this winter have adapted very well. People are supporting us and you can feel it on the pitch… I am not a number 10. Let’s say I am an attacking central midfielder. I like to move, defend, attack. I do everything a bit. The centre is where I can bring the most to the team. On the side, it is much more complicated…I have always wanted to play in England. It is the league that suits me the best.”

With Hatem Ben Arfa edging towards a return, Newcastle could soon be back to full-strength ahead of a schedule which sees them play host to Southampton, Stoke, Fulham and Sunderland in the next seven, in addition to trips to Swansea and Wigan. Coming in at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.3 in the Sky Sports game, Sissoko is significantly cheaper than Ben Arfa and Cisse’s respective FPL price tags of 7.4 and 8.8 for those looking to invest in Pardew’s side, while his stand-out displays are even threatening to shake up the order of the popular five man midfields in light of his superb form and eye-catching run of fixtures.

The only issue appears to be finding room for him in our midfield five. There is fierce competition for places and the consistency being shown by Juan Mata, Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale, along with the promise of continued returns from Fellaini and Michu and the budget appeal from the likes of Jason Puncheon: it’s difficult to look beyond those established names. Despite the recent investment, then, Sissoko represents a differential – a stretch from the norm which breaks up the rigid template we’ve seen formed. With the 33% owned Fellaini closing in on 10 bookings and a two-match ban, he could be the one sacrificed, while others may look to upgrade Puncheon or their budget midfielder to get on board Newcastle’s forthcoming run in the hope that Sissoko can go on delivering at his impressive rate.

For anyone considering Sissoko for Fellaini in GW29

Would anyone be tempted by Barfa instead. Very explosive, nice fixtures and, very likely to be on pens.

he is an explosive player. But also factor in, Newcastle were in terrible form at the time. They have improved vastly since then

as previously commented...I find Gouffran quite interesting as well...but all in all it's a diffrent team at Newcastle to the first half of the season with so many new players and players returning from injury.... Sissoko,Cabaye, Gouffran, Cisse, HBA....just stick a pin in....Good fixtures, nailed on players and a leap in the dark..It all sounds good to me...

    RVP Sturridge Papiss

*Papiss could be Giroud for the Villa game then Dzeko for avl + WIG.

I could get one of the Chelsea mids but it would mean quite a bit of messing about with my team and I don't see any of them drastically outscoring Bale, Theo, Fellaini or Michu. Plus you have the points shared among Lampard, Mata and Hazard while my 4 are the main scorers for their team.

I think looking at Bale's stats and realising that he would be a differential at the top of my ML too have swayed me.

Although I still think that Aguero's home fixtures could be profitable, especially if they start scoring goals. I have a plan to get him in if needed, put it that way.

yeah having a plan is good, but for me, it's all about Bale right now.

Only 2 people in my ML have him, 1 is 100 behind me, the other 200.

My ML leader COULD swap Gerrard for him, but I don't think he will.

He will be a massive differential for me.

    Worth a hit anywhere?

Already done FT bringing Bale in.

    Bego/(Bunn)
    Zabaleta/Hill/Harte/Demel/(Davies)
    Mata/Walcott/Bale/Marveaux/(Michu)
    RvP/Fletcher/(Sturridge)

Nothing in the bank, would lose too much value on Michu/Davies/Sturridge to do an one-week switch.

Only thing I can potentially see is:

    Fletcher -> Benteke/Lambert/Anichebe (-4)

    and then

    Marveaux -> Sissoko (-8)

    Too extreme?

I don't know how anyone would risk going without Bale for the rest of the season. He's arguably the strongest heavy hitter mid in the game and the only reason I didn't go for him earlier on in the season was money issues/lack of WC/being averse to hits and getting lucky that he got suspensions and injuries/babies.

My main reason was I couldn't afford Suarez or Aguero to go with the 5 in midfield, and I felt of Mata, Walcott and Bale, Bale was the least consistent. Sturridge has allowed me to have a re-think on these plans. I am just waiting to see if Bale survives tonight before I get him in.

Well I think if I HAD to drop one it'd be Walcott. But as it stands I'm going all 3 right now. Although I think I might consider the likes of Cazorla and Hazard as differentiators in weeks to come. I don't think Walcott on the wing is hugely stronger than Cazorla as they both offer decent goal threat and assist potential. It's those Newcastle games you'd be afraid to go without Walcott though

I agree hazard and lampard are viable alternatives to mata, think I might have one of them as my chelsea player. Walcott is a bit tougher as he is on the wing but until giroud pulls his finger out there doesn't seem to be a consistent scoring alternative.

this season is way too easy so far

at the start of the season plan was 3-4-3 with cheap defenders and heavy atack + midfilders

    Mata/hazard , Bale , Santi/Walcott , Gerrard/Lampard and Michu/Fellaini was core of every team

and atackers RVP,Suarez + Berba / Ba (newcastle)

winter wc allowed us to get better defenders in due better team valute and switching to 3-5-2 cause midfilders are undropable and RVP+Sturridge will do well

is it like this every year?if you have ,,temple'' you doing brilliantly

You're right, the game is easy with hindsight.

Jokes aside, well done on your season so far but from experience, this season isn't typical of the game. The template team on here does well because it's the template team for a reason.. i.e. people suggesting the ideas spend a lot of time planning their teams. There hasn't been a season where such a high proportion of the bandwagons have paid off though, that I can remember.

only difference beetwen higher and lower ranked players is timing to get player in

luckuly for me i was good at predicting form players so i did not jump at badwagons

2 key stuff in my season was to hold on Caz and Bale (hattricks) when other people getting rid of them

more or less. must have emerge at different stages however, last season valencia, also dempsey was a 'must have' only after christmas or so, siggy, pienaar, cisse/ba switch... it's never too easy. who knows how sissoko does compared to fellaini & michu from now on. DGWs make the difference. it's a bit hindsight to say this is too easy

majorty cause of this site and fantastic advices

last season i was +1M untill i didnt find out for this site in gw 18 or so and since then i managed to finissh in top 50k

euro fpl was superb as well and i managed to finissh in top 100

if i stay in top 1k this season i would consider that as sucess

ofc i am not fpl pro like majorty of you but in 1 and half year of active playing i learned a lot

with this site top 10k finissh in every season shouldn't be a problem

Enjoy it mate, it genuinely doesn't happen every year no matter how good an FPL player you think you are.

FPL involves a fair bit of luck (as does any competition) and some seasons you get the breaks and some seasons everything goes tits up.

You're having a stonking season this season and fair play to you.

But you can chat to a fair few on here who've been in your position or even higher in season's past and ask them how easy it is to replicate it the following years.

It's the most important factor, trust me. I've had it good and bad.

All you are doing when you play this game is attempting to increase your odds. It's like poker, you can be an expert, but if the cards are against you there is nothing you can do.

i wouldn't say that luck is the most key factor

and that's exacly style of my game ODDS

checking teams wich concede a lot and planing ahead with fixures

in my opinion it's about 70% planing/skills/gut feeling and 30% luck

Took a look at the relationship between Bale's shots and his positioning to test the idea that he shoots more the more central he is...

By a nice coincidence Bale has now played 22 times, so I divided his gameweeks into the 11 most central (gameweeks 2-4, 7, 10, 13, 18, 22-26) and the 11 most wide (gameweeks 1, 5-6, 9, 11-12, 14-15, 19-20, 23). You can of course check those positions in the compare tool. Gametime is thus roughly equal and the large sample of games should smooth out the influence of fixtures.

Then I just totted up his shots and shots in the box.

    11 most wide games:
43 shots, 21 in the box.

    11 most central games:
66 shots, 24 in the box

Shots went up by 50% in the most central games. Shots in the box remained the same. When you look at his recent goals you can see many of them were scored outside the box, so this quite readily translates to fantasy returns.

As for why he varies between central and wide positions between games, I think it's due to AVB switching between 4-2-3-1 (Bale drifts central) and 4-4-2 (Bale starts wide) systems. In many of his central games, he started with Sigurdsson who is a CAM and thus fits the 4-2-3-1. His recent performances with Holtby continue that trend.

It's pretty obvious if he plays centrally he's going to have more shots than crosses generally. He's given a very free role so he can drift in and out of positions and that's been happening a lot lately.

Saying that many of his recent goals were outside the box is a bit misleading. 2 out 5 were inside the box and one of the goals outside the box was a free kick which you can hardly fault him for (seeing as free kicks can't be inside the box)

Yeah, goals outside the box normally form a small proportion of total goals though. 3/5 is pretty good. Van Nistelrooy famously (would love to see this tested) was said to have never scored a goal outside the box in his career. The point is that he can score from outside the box, nothing more.

        Free kick was awesome.

@Forca Inter, 3-5-2 is not necessarily the best formation. A repost from earlier.

The power 5 vs. 3-4-3 (A case study)
So had some work in the morning (number crunching) so post that, I thought I’d do the same with FPL. Just something I did to check how my team would have performed otherwise since I want to have a look at both of them from a neutral perspective. Just sharing it.
    Assumption = Power 5 = Bale + Mata + Walcott + Michu + Fellaini

My third striker GW20-GW26 (RVP+Suarez are my first 2 strikers) :

    Berbatov(5) + Berbatov(8) + Ba(9) + Giroud(15) + Giroud(11) + Giroud(2) + Sturridge(?)
    = 50 pts (8.3ppg)

5th midfielder out of power 5 i have missed out on :

    Michu/Fellaini (0) + Bale (0) + Fellaini (6) + Fellaini (5) + Fellaini (2) + Fellaini (15) + Fellaini(?)

    = 29 pts (4.8ppg)

Looking at only last 4 weeks
    3rd striker = 37pts (9.25ppg)
    5th midfielder = 28 pts (7ppg)

Now you might argue that my 3rd striker had a DGW twice. So just to get a bit of relativity into context,
    RVP last 6 = 44 (7.3ppg)
    Suarez last 6 = 48 (8 ppg)
    RVP last 4 = 22 (5.5 ppg)
    Saurez last 4 = 19 ( 4.8 ppg)

    Inference
While the power 5 has performed well (especially in the last 4), once can still better it using a 3-4-3. Obviously one has to predict Michu/Fellaini’s downturn in form but this is an analysis done purely to encourage discussion. The last 2-3 weeks have been poor (co-inciding with Fellaini’s big haul and RVP and Suarez’s form coming down, but their potential always exists). Not to mention Lambert’s form as a 3rd striker.

If you do a case study, using a single case of an obscenely high rank, of course the case study will show the success of whatever formation that case used.

Just using examples like Lambert Benteke around as well. Just trying to prove 3-5-2 isn't necessarily ALWAYS the best option is all.

Well, to be strict, it could have shown something else like he caught monster hauls from individual great picks or something. But yep it's just a case study.

And in fairness Lateriser does keep saying it's a case study and saying it's not conclusive, people are reading conclusions from it that he did not make. All it is showing is that it is possible, and that can't be disputed.

Of course we should know it is possible to get good points with whatever formation you choose, there's so much choice in players. But bandwagons can sometimes obscure that.

Personally I have chosen 3-5-2 because I think it includes the most high-scoring players. I am fully aware though that if someone picked their 3rd striker well and ditched the right 5th mid, they could outscore me. I just don't think the odds are great.

problem is that i didnt gave a shet about 3-5-2 before WC and before Sturridge signed for liverpool

but after that move and after watching ticker i though that 3-5-2 is a way too go and so far switching strategy served me well

if sturridge didnt came in liverpool i would never get rid of suarez and i would still be at 3-4-3

but your point is good as well

You are really over analysing the game, just pick a team make a transfer when you need to based on form and fixtures. Then let the premiership teams/players decide if this is correct. This is just a complete case of too much time on your hands.

still think Fellaini is worth the hold. i'd still hold him in. it's just between getting Jevans in or not anyway for me.. cause i have 2ft, so Fell>Sissoko, Demel>Jevans.

    Afternoon guys.

I know it's a way off, but does this look ok for the next GW?
    Team picks itself really.

Any more changes will require a hit. Not sure whether to do Demel -> Wilson for -4 or not.

    Federici
    Demel - Zabaleta - Jevans - Shaw
    Mata - Bale (c) - Fellaini - Walcott (v)
    Lambert- Van Persie

    On a WC just now.

    De Gea, Bunn

    Harte, Azpilicueta, Debuchy, Turner, Wilson

Bale, Michu, Walcott, Fellaini (£3m banked to upgrade for GW29 blank), Townsend

    van Persie, Dzeko, Sturridge

Where are the flaws here? Dzeko's gametime being one of them I know but City have good fixtures and he has been scoring lately through City's poor performances.

Is De Gea likely to play every game with CL and FA cup coming? It's either De Gea/Cuellar or Migs/Evans.

I like Migs Evans combo better.

Migs not subject to rotation and Evans decent cleanie and goal threat.

Dzeko is a gamble too especially if he's going to get rotated with Tevez in Mancini's upcoming Citeh Shakeup.

Thanks for the input. I think I prefer Migs/Evans as well. I want City cover and need to close a 100 point gap in my ML, some teams above me only have 10 players this weekend so decided to WC now to capitalise by me having a full 15 to choose from.

Who do you think I should look at instead of Dzeko? Go Fellaini/Dzeko --> Silva/Fletcher?

    Have planned to do:

Puncheon and Suarez ➡ Bale and Pog (-4)

    Worth it?

    Would leave me with

    Fed

    Demel - Zaba - Cameron - Turner

    Bale - Mata - Fellaini - Walcott(c)

    RVP - Pog

    ...for this GW. Thoughts?

sissoko has better fixtures in the medium term and no blank.

Is Suarez a season keeper? Got him in for Aguero and see that lots of people are swapping back to Kun again.

I am not sure Aguero is a better option. But then, 'he is aguero'

i have 5 dgw players (Suarez, Sturridge, GJ, Michu, Davies) and Guthrie who will not play at GW27. I plan to make 3 transfers taking -8 pts. hit. considering there may be some blanks on GW29 i couldn't decide on transfers. which one would you prefer?

          A) GJ + Guthrie + Suarez -> Baines + Sissoko + Dzeko
          B) GJ + Guthrie + Sturridge -> Evans + Sissoko + Lambert

          whole team:
          bunn cesar
          GJ Zaba Davies Clyne Pearce
          Mata Bale Walcott Michu Guthrie
          RVP Suarez Sturridge
          0,9 on the bank
