It hasn’t taken long for Moussa Sissoko to establish himself as a key component of Alan Pardew’s new-look Newcastle side. The departure of Demba Ba, allied with an influx of new arrivals, has had an instant impact on the Magpies’ fortunes after a disastrous first few months of the campaign.

Sissoko arrived on these shores with a reputation as a box-to-box midfielder; 20 goals in seven seasons at former club Toulouse suggested he would chip in occasionally but a move to the advanced central midfield role behind Papiss Cisse in a 4-2-3-1 has seen the Frenchman flourish. In a situation similar to the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Michu earlier this season, Sissoko’s penchant for Fantasy points and mid-price appeal has already got the bandwagon in overdrive – almost 100,000 clambered aboard prior to last Saturday’s trip to Tottenham.

So far, Sissoko has rewarded his owners with attacking returns in all three appearances for Pardew’s side. An assist for Cisse’s goal at Villa was followed by a brace on his home debut in a stirring comeback win over Chelsea; the midfielder also teed up Yoan Gouffran for the Magpies’ equaliser at the Lane last weekend. It’s not just individual returns which have stood out, though; Sissoko has afforded Newcastle a greater physical presence and a real drive through the middle, with those wins over Villa and Chelsea the first time this season the club have won back-to-back league matches. Speaking to the press on Tuesday afternoon, Sissoko admitted:

“It has gone off smoothly. I have had a lot of fun. The Frenchmen who came to Newcastle this winter have adapted very well. People are supporting us and you can feel it on the pitch… I am not a number 10. Let’s say I am an attacking central midfielder. I like to move, defend, attack. I do everything a bit. The centre is where I can bring the most to the team. On the side, it is much more complicated…I have always wanted to play in England. It is the league that suits me the best.”

With Hatem Ben Arfa edging towards a return, Newcastle could soon be back to full-strength ahead of a schedule which sees them play host to Southampton, Stoke, Fulham and Sunderland in the next seven, in addition to trips to Swansea and Wigan. Coming in at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.3 in the Sky Sports game, Sissoko is significantly cheaper than Ben Arfa and Cisse’s respective FPL price tags of 7.4 and 8.8 for those looking to invest in Pardew’s side, while his stand-out displays are even threatening to shake up the order of the popular five man midfields in light of his superb form and eye-catching run of fixtures.

The only issue appears to be finding room for him in our midfield five. There is fierce competition for places and the consistency being shown by Juan Mata, Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale, along with the promise of continued returns from Fellaini and Michu and the budget appeal from the likes of Jason Puncheon: it’s difficult to look beyond those established names. Despite the recent investment, then, Sissoko represents a differential – a stretch from the norm which breaks up the rigid template we’ve seen formed. With the 33% owned Fellaini closing in on 10 bookings and a two-match ban, he could be the one sacrificed, while others may look to upgrade Puncheon or their budget midfielder to get on board Newcastle’s forthcoming run in the hope that Sissoko can go on delivering at his impressive rate.

One thing that gets a bit overlooked when people talk about the 3-5-2 masterplan they have going on is that a great deal of strikers have or have had penalty duties. This is something that really helps to seal the deal for me when it comes to strikers. I've had penalty goals from Ba, Berbatov, Lambert, Aguero and 2 from Benteke in the last 3 games. While you could argue this is somewhat lucky...I very much took this into account when buying the player. In fact if Benteke wasn't on penalties I might have resisted and stuck with Lambert but that bonus just made it too hard to resist. Out of the so called Power 5 there are no penalty takers and if you can find a cheap striker who offers both a massive threat AND penalties you're looking at a bargain. And that's what Lambert and Benteke offer at the moment. I know it seems like a trivial thing but that's 6 goals I have got from penalties this year...a decent total and I'm glad I took these things into account.

Sorry if this sounds like a ramble

It's seems neat to come up with sweeping oversimplified rules like essential players, power 5 and 3-5-2 but it's all rubbish really. There are almost infinite combinations that would produce a successful season and in truth a mixture of luck and planning is all you can rely on.

Penalty goals aren't lucky, they're just infrequent.

It's a nice bonus when picking a player, but it shouldn't be the basis for selection.

It certainly adds to Lambert and Benteke's appeal but the fact you're got so many recently is unusual.

How often do you realistically see any given team getting a penalty? You also have to take into account that players miss penalties!

The thing you are ignoring here is that I meant that if you have a combination of a massive threat AND penalties + fixtures then instantly that striker is more appealing and is why I have latched onto certain players to find this combination and hope for a bit of luck mixed in with their talent.

Aguero being on penalties made me much more inclined to go for him because it's like adding a get out of jail free card. If he underperforms in a game...he can still get a lucky penalty. The same goes for all of these guys.

But it just so happens that most of these guys offer a massive and central attacking threat within their respective teams (with the exception of Berbatov who I have grown to loathe as an FPL player after a string of weeks where he barely had any shots)

But the likes of Lambert and Benteke are different, they're more direct and arguably strikers in their purest form. They rarely ever let you down from a statistical point of view.

I said the 'so called Power 5' which I don't believe in necessarily. It's just a group of the top 5 most popular picks. I wasn't trying to say no mids have penalties and a big threat.

Ok here's my team, pretty standard I know, nothing very exciting going on.

      Szczez
      Clichy--Martin--Demel
      Bale--Mata--Walcott-Fellaini--Noble
      RVP--Cisse

      (Bunn--Jenrique--Sturridge--Davies) ..... 1FT, 1m in the bank.

The only thing I can think of doing is Noble ➡ Kebe to play this week and then GW29 as well.
The alternative is Noble ➡ Sissoko and then change Cisse to potentially Dzeko if he's getting gametime.
      Any other suggestions?

what about Demel, or one form bench, to someone that will for sure play this GW?

haven't followed the Demel situation mind you, does he play if O'Brien is out?

I've got my eyes on Demel to Wilson for next week. I don't mind playing with 10 this week if a defender is the one missing out. Although Davies to Harte/Pearce might be good, thanks.

In that case I don't think there is much between them - even the run ins for A, B and D are similarly tough. I'd go Sturridge and one other but nothing much in it for me.

A bit of bad press on here for Rooney at times today...I thought it was a masterclass in tactics by Fergie. Without doubt he was put out there to contain Ronaldo by supporting Raphael ..but what was great was how well they did it...Watch the game back for a while and ignore the ball..just watch Rooney and Raphael moving in tandem at various points in the game...They'd worked hard on that...!!

HEC. You might have noticed that i am a lot more optimistic than most toon fans! I am not worried about relegation in the slightest, and think that we can have a proper run in the europa cup. I reckon that we will put our strongest team out tonight (pardeau has pretty much said that we will), and if we don't win by a few goals, we will do the same again next week. I don't think that we would plan to rest cisse for southampton, but if he plays in the ukraine on thursday night, and is knackered, I can see gouffran getting a go up front against southampton.

Regardless of what happens this week, we're putting out a full strength team against Southampton. Lose at home to Southampton and progression in the EL means nothing.

We are going to finish between 7th-10th in the premier. I would take finishing 10th and getting to the semi's of the europa over finishing 7th and going out this round.

Lol... I'm not sure if you've seen the league table recently but that really isn't the trade off ....

There is no chance we're catching Liverpool in 9th, 9 points ahead of us or anyone north of that.

If we lose to Southampton and are going to Swansea on bit of a downer, I wouldn't fancy our chances. It's all about momentum and that's why we did well last season. Southampton is a massive match for us, make no mistake.

After we beat liverpool at home, there will only be 6 points difference. Easily made up now we can actually put a proper team out! 😉

Of course southampton is a big game. I just think that metalist is bigger, as even if we lose to southampton (which we won't) there are plenty more games afterwards for us to win, and everyone else around us are rubbish!!

            Which front 8 is better?

            Bale, Mata, Walcott, Michu, Fellaini

            A) RVP, Suarez, Le Fondre
            B) RVP, Sturridge, Lambert/Benteke

Well you'll bench one of them so I'd get ALF either way (if he's your desired cheapo), so it's a question of Sturridge + better defence or Suarez. I think Sturridge personally

Fair play Beric, did you get any Liverpool players this week? What was your reasoning captaining Michu over a Pool player? I've spent the week regretting not considering Mr Michu for the (c)!

Cheers! I have Sturridge and GJ. I didn't really want to captain a flagged player and I have little faith in Liverpool anyway - despite some recent good performances. Whereas I always have faith in Michu, he's got to be my favourite player this year both in FPL and reality, so I guess I just wanted to captain him when he had a DGW (in other words, I got lucky, I was real close to giving it to Sturridge)

Very nice, I wish in a perverse way that I'd got Sturridge instead of Suarez...just so I could have had those same doubts and gone with Michu!

Suarez sat by the Pool relaxing before the game. At 26, he was approaching the Zenit of his career. He thought about having a Kiev for lunch but the thought made him Bordeaux. Lyon on his deckchair, he considered meatballs with Basel. He'd loved meatballs since he was in Napolis. But that brought back memories of his mum nagging him: "Luis! Borussia Teeth!". He sighed to himself. It was all Sparta growing up. Forget lunch! He was bored! It was time to party! He reached for his bag but realized he'd left his Plzen his flat.

Siging, he leant back and put another tune on his iPod. He was feeling so Lazio.

Hey guys, what should I do with this team?

                  Begovic--Cerny

                  Johnson--Davies--Zabaleta--Harte--Clyne

                  Walcott--Mata--Puncheon--Michu--Bale

                  Suarez--RVP--Remy

1 FT, 0.2 in the bank, and 4 players with an upcoming blank gw.

I am deciding between these options.

                  A) Davies, Remy --> Turner,Lambert (4 pt hit)

                  B) Johnson, Remy --> Turner, Lambert (4 pt hit and will leave 1.9 in the bank to upgrade Davies/Puncheon next gw)

                  C) Johnson, Puncheon, Remy --> Turner, Fellaini, Pogrebynak (8 pt hit and will turn my team into 352)

The biggest problem I am having with getting Lambert is I will have 3 Southampton players in my team- what do you guys think?

                  Suggestions will be much appreciated!

Is it wrong for me to want Suarez to be withdrawn 'as a precaution' on 80 minutes then be rated 50/50 for the Swansea game? Just to give Suarez captainers a taste of their own medicine 🙂

I don't really get this. People who bought Suarez knew they were buying a fit player who would start. People who bought Sturridge were buying a player who was carrying an injury and had withdrawn from an international game. He was even flagged in FPL.

No offence, but if you bought him you had to take into account he might be actually injured.

                      A fair point - and I didn't moan when he didn't play.

I just think it would be karma for those people who were laughing at others misfortune... (regardless of the relative probabilities)
