United slip out of the Champions League reckoning as Cristiano Ronaldo scores the crucial goal to secure Madrid’s progress. Hatem Ben Arfa could be afforded a run out in Newcastle’s Europa League match with Anzhi, Kieran Gibbs is nearing a return to fitness, Adam Lallana should recover from a head knock sustained last weekend and Daniel Sturridge is expected to return for Liverpool’s home clash with Spurs on Sunday:

United 1 Real Madrid 2
Given the importance of last night’s game, Sir Alex Ferguson’s defensive selection was perhaps an indication of his first-choice back-four. Having returned to the side for last weekend’s home win over Norwich, Jonny Evans dropped out, with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic again the preferred partnership. Despite being lauded as a key member of the United starting XI only a matter of weeks ago by his manager, the Northern Ireland international has now started just one of the last four in all competitions and with one less trophy to play for, his owners will be concerned over his game time in the league, with even less rotation required amongst Ferguson’s backline now.

The main talking point prior to kick-off was, of course, the omission of Wayne Rooney from the starting line-up. Ferguson, however, went to great lengths to explain his decision was down to Rooney’s lack of fitness after a recent sinus problem, with Danny Welbeck getting the nod due to a specific tactical game plan. The former Everton man had returned to the first XI in Saturday’s win over the Canaries but had played just 30 minutes in the previous two games – a significant factor in his manager’s thinking, with Ferguson already on record as saying Rooney needs a run of games before reaching full fitness.

“It is one of these situations where we regard the qualities of Real Madrid with Xabi Alonso as controller of the team. Young Shinji Kagawa found it hard to do that defensive job in the first leg. Danny Welbeck is the best in our team at that, and that is the reason I have selected him. Wayne Rooney needs a game or two. He did well in the second half against Norwich, but he looked like he needed a game. He probably will come on in the second half and win the game for us!”

From a Fantasy perspective, United’s exit will also ease the likelihood of rest and rotation throughout the side as Ferguson looks to build on a 12 point gap over City in his bid to secure the title – the worry for Robin Van Persie’s owners was that, if United progressed to the latter stages of the Champions League, the Dutchman would be rested during the league program. That scenario has now been eliminated with Ferguson now perhaps set to give Van Persie the platform to score the goals that will see him earn the Golden Boot in his first season at Old Trafford.

Last night’s result will hopefully speed up the rescheduling of United’s league trip to West Ham, which was due to take place this weekend but has been cancelled due to FA Cup commitments – with more free midweeks in their calendar, we’ll hopefully soon learn of a new date, with many still crossing their fingers that the match could be moved to next midweek and stay within the confines of Gameweek 29.

In other news…
Alan Pardew could well be willing to hand Hatem Ben Arfa some part in Newcastle’s Europa League tie in Russia on Thursday. The Magpies face a first leg tie with Anzhi Makhachkala, with Ben Arfa now close to a return. The Frenchman has recovered from injury but is, according to Alan Pardew, some way short of match fitness…

“I think he has got a chance. We wanted to put some work into him. He’s a little bit short, so whether he gets 20 or 30 minutes towards the end of that game, I don’t know. That’s probably the most he could get. We’ll see how he shapes up. He worked all weekend – hopefully, we’ll get him even closer.”

Ben Arfa’s return to the fray could prove significant for those considering Newcastle’s attacking assets in the coming weeks. While the likes of Moussa Sissoko and Papiss Cisse look secure, they would surely benefit from Ben Arfa’s creative contribution from the flank. There is no suggestion that Sissoko will have his role, up in support of Cisse, changed when Ben Arfa is fit, having proved so effective in recent weeks. Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Swansea was the first time in five games that Sissoko has failed to return a goal or an assist since his arrival in England.

Arsene Wenger’s options look set to be boosted by the return to fitness of Kieran Gibbs according to reports. Gibbs is set for a return to full training and could be in the frame to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League next week. Gibbs’ return would give Wenger a selection headache at left-back, with Nacho Monreal currently in the role. The Spaniard has impressed whilst Gibbs has been sidelined and it’s perhaps not cut-and-dry that the England man will make an immediate return to the Gunners lineup.

Southampton look set to be able to call on captain Adam Lallana for the trip to Norwich at the weekend. The midfielder returned to action against Newcastle a fortnight ago, after a two-month absence, only to be forced off after a clash of heads with Clint Hill against QPR on Saturday. Lallana’s recent return proved the catalyst for a shuffle in the Saints’ midfield, with both Jay Rodriguez and Steven Davis dropped to the bench on Saturday to make way, as Gaston Ramirez and Jason Puncheon were recalled after being benched in the defeat to Newcastle. With Lallana set to be in contention, Mauricio Pochettino could well keep an unchanged starting lineup for the Carrow Road clash although Puncheon’s owners will still have some concern over his security of start given the teamsheet on the previous away trip.

Daniel Sturridge’s Fantasy owners will be relieved to hear the Liverpool forward is expected to be fit for Sunday’s home clash with Tottenham. Having missed two of the last three matches due to a thigh complaint, Sturridge’s fitness has been a growing issue in recent weeks – despite his relatively kind price tag across the Fantasy games, the uncertainty over his game time means his appeal has taken a real dent. Over 52,000 FPL managers have already snapped up Luis Suarez after his hat-trick against Wigan on Saturday evening but the Uruguayan is likely to return to the support role this weekend, with Sturridge once again afforded the chance to lead the line – all the more crucial for his owners, given there are currently just six fixtures scheduled to take place. A move back to 4-2-3-1 from the weekend 4-3-3 looks the likeliest scenario, with Philippe Coutinho and Stewart Downing retaining their places on the flanks on either side of Suarez. Although Sturridge is set to return to training today, Brendan Rodgers looks set to be without Martin Skrtel again – the centre-half remains sidelined with a knee problem.

What do you think of the differential team for this GW, all 6% ownership or under:

    Foster (Bunn)
    Samba, Santon, Ridgwell (Johnson, Mariappa)
Coutinho, Cabaye, Sess, NZogs (De Guzman)
    Cisse, Lukaku, Remy (C)

I bit concerned about bringing Rooney in. If he can be dropped for games as important as last night then there may be internal club trouble between the player and manager we don't know about.

But I can also see RVP dropping to the bench for the odd remaining easier game.

Fergie does have 4 players to try and keep happy.. but I'd be camped out behind the sofa for the majority of all their remaining games if I didn't have one of them

I don't think you can read into Rooney not being selected last night as him being out of favour, it's rubbish in my opinion. I do however agree that fitting in his 4 forwards between now and the end of the season will inevitably mean a few rests for both Rooney and RVP.

RVP is the striker of choice at United. He, like Fergie wants the Golden Boot and with Suarez's latest Hattrick the pressure is now on RVP for goals.

I've got 2FT so planning to do Sturridge and Fabio to Remy and Jose Enrique. Am I crazy to get rid of Sturridge? Current team is:

    Begovic | Federici
    Rafael | O'Shea | Zabaleta | Clyne | (Jose Enrique)
    Mata | Walcott | Sissoko | Fellaini | Bale
    Suarez | Benteke | (Remy)

Something to talk about, i thought United were just shocked after the decision but after conceding those two goals, i thought we were tremendous in our attempt to get something out of the tie.

In a game of 10 v 11, if the GK is the best player for Madrid, then they have to be playing against some bloody good and bloody determined 10 men.

So RVP is now 13.8 with another 0.1 likely by the weekend.

Think we'll see him drop to 13.6? After the deadline he'll appear as having a fixture again.

Updated my defensive regression table http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/2254/

This weeks stats suggest that over the last 4 GWs:

WBA, Fulham and Arsenal have conceded fewer goals than they should have.
Southampton, Wigan, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham have conceded more goals than they should have.

(Based on those teams vs the league averages for goals conceded per big chance and attempt in the box)

Link to last week's predictions: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/03/01/scout-scribbles-sturridge-worry-for-reds/comment-page-1/#comment-5290069

Fulham, Arsenal, Norwich, WBA, QPR were predicted to regress - all conceded and averaged 2 goals against.

Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Southampton were predicted to improve - 3 kept clean sheets.

Allen, though i suspect for the odd game he may want allen lucas and gerrard in the middle so coutinho would probably drop in that instance. i wouldn't be surprised for instance if vs spurs he drops coutinho.

i think this is possible yep. given the sturridge niggle too though, he may choose to keep him on the bench and play the same 11 as before, eg with both coutinho and allen playing. he can then go for plan b and bring danny on if we're struggling.

Finally getting over the anger from last night...time to focus on this week...

    bunn (ddg)
    harte cueller davies
    michu bale
    sturridge

non players: wally fellaini maloney rvp giroud baines onouha….have 2FT and 2.3m…

    A: giroud + maloney/fellaini + onouha/baines >> benteke + sissoko + debuchy
    B: giroud + maloney/fellaini + onouha/baines >> suarez + sissoko + debuchy
    C: giroud + sturridge + maloney >> suarez + benteke + sissoko

The sticking point is suarez as to when to bring him in...i was leaning towards options A as i don't like the idea of two lpool strikers this weekend against spurs (i.e. option B). I could then potentially do sturridge >> suarez in gw30 at a higher cost.

thoughts? also if you could suggest any other transfer options...

no, keep your FTs to leave you more able to get players in for the DGWs ahead. Much of what you'd pick up this week would be long term dross anyway so it might cost you two transfers, and a hit, to get in a poor player.

i reckon 10 is enough and it's not worth swapping for just one week. Don't forget Man U play Reading the following week and could whip them with RVP getting mega points.

    Morning all

Been watching part of my team plummet in value this week (Walcott, Mata, Giroud etc) and wondering who would be the best striker to bring in to replace Giroud. I already have Suarez and Lamber and chances are will buy back RVP.

    Options:
    1. Benteke (good fixtures and has been very consistent)
    2. Remy (great price, fixtures and needs to score to save QPR)
    3. Lukaku (good fixtures and maybe finding form)

    Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Benteke imo, great form good fixtures on pens etc. Remy = you shoudn't trust qpr, been injured could happen again. Lukaku = a beast but worse fix than benteke, can always be rotated never know

I'm sure this was discussed to death last night & probably today too, but...

    Nani deserved that red card.

Yes the initial contact was accidental, as Nani only had eyes on the ball & didnt see the Madrid player, BUT after he made contact with the player, he then kicked out at him.

If you watch Nani's movement, when he makes contact with the player, his leg/foot goes backwards, but then just after that, his leg/foot moves outwards.

That is not a natural movement considering the incident.

Frustrating for Utd fans, but look at it logically & honestly, it was Nani's fault, not the ref's.

Keane is a knob that just wants to start a fight to me himself look hard.

His logic was wrong, but Nani did kick out.

Yeah, it was probably thw rong decision but it's not the outrage it's being made out to be. Plus, Rafael handled a goal on the line and nobody gives a toss. You can't have it both ways.

For being an ABU, this post was not the worst thing I've seen from you.
But in all honesty, that was not a kick. When you're taking a ball down, which is what Nani intended to do, the speed of foot and ball should be matched at the point of impact. The move he did was perfectly natural considering he tried to take down the ball.
This might look like a kick when a player gets in the way, I agree, but still anyone see that there is no intent, and as such the ref should have made the sensible choice and given a yellow.

Depends what others in your MLs have. Unless you still harbour hopes of winning the whole thing.

If we knew the DGWs were all close it would be fine.

      Basically. Who knows?

xx Evans Aguero RVP Mata Walcott

    2FT's

Aguero + Mata -> Sissoko + Suarez is the smart and simple thing to do.

But Suarez has an alright fixture this gw, i don't think he will go mental. Go safe with the choice above or gamble on Beneteke/Cisse with another midfielder?
