The summer departure of Didier Drogba looked tailor-made for Romelu Lukaku to barge his way past Fernando Torres in the Chelsea pecking order and justify the club’s decision to splash out £10m for his services in August 2011. It didn’t quite transpire like that, though. In spite of a lack of forward options, Roberto Di Matteo shipped Lukaku off on a season-long loan to West Brom and kept faith in the misfiring Spaniard in a move that played some part in his subsequent downfall.

Handed just two starts in the opening 10 Gameweeks by Steve Clarke, Lukaku’s Fantasy prospects looked initially bleak, with the Baggies boss tending to afford him minutes from the bench late on as first-choice forward Shane Long started to tire. Indeed, it wasn’t until Gameweeks 18-19 that Lukaku finally earned two consecutive starts for his new club – a decision which, when you analyse the statistics, seems as baffling as Di Matteo’s decision to send him to the midlands in the first place.

Lukaku has started 12 games for West Brom, with 13 of his 25 appearances coming from the bench. Focussing on his first XI performances, he has returned nine goals, two assists and 14 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points over those 12 matches – a highly impressive 6.3 points per start. Such has been his level of consistency, Lukaku has either scored, assisted or returned bonus points in 11 of those 12 fixtures; the only blank coming in Gameweek 25 when he was sacrificed just after half-time as the Baggies were reduced to 10 men at home to Spurs.

Bearing in mind he has now started eight of the last 10 when available (he was ineligible to face his parent club last weekend), Lukaku seems to have edged ahead of Long as Clarke’s preferred forward. Although there remain slight concerns over Clarke’s propensity to rotate his front men in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Long’s lack of form certainly helps the Belgian’s cause – the former has failed to produce any returns in each of his last eight starts and has registered a single goal from Gameweek 14 onwards. With his side now past the magic 40 point safety mark, Clarke even shifted to a 4-4-2 in the previous home game – Lukaku duly obliged with a brace and maximum bonus, returning his highest haul of the season.

Up next for the Baggies is a home clash with Swansea this weekend before a couple of road trips take them to Stoke and West Ham – the type of bruising encounters Lukaku is likely to thrive upon. After the Upton Park encounter, Clarke’s side then face home clashes against Arsenal, Newcastle and Wigan in the following five, in addition to a trip to Southampton; certainly, the schedule looks enticing for those eyeing up the 6.5 priced FPL forward.

With the likes of James Morrison also struggling to replicate his early season form, Lukaku seems the one Baggies player we can rely upon to produce the points on a regular basis. Granted, there are other forwards in the mid-price range who look equally appealing, with Rickie Lambert and Christian Benteke the stand out alternatives, but Lukaku’s outstanding consistency may just well seal the deal for some.

Thanks to everyone who replied on the last page on my defender vs. striker dilemma. I think as Aguero has an injury it's best to get rid of him. Plus getting a striker is more fun.

I think this season, if you ever fancied taking a 8-12 point hit, this is the GW to do it, providing the transfers help you for advanced transfers and lineups and it helps you field more players.

So many people are going to be playing as little as 5-6 men this GW. A lot will be playing 7-8-9.

If you take a 12 point hit and the players coming strenghten your team for GW30 and 31 and help fund transfers in the next few GWs, it could be a well spent 8-12 points.

      IF it helps long-term, yes.

Chances are though, the hits involve removing deadwood in the defence (and probably won't yield that many points) or players with blanks who will have DGWs (who you won't want to get rid of).

The same rules apply as ever when it comes to taking hits this GW IMO. Weight the risk vs. the reward. If the likelyhood of the reward is greater than the risk of it not working our, don't do it.

If you have 8 players or something then fair enough, but also remember that there are less games so generally less points available all round. So it's likely your 8 point hit will be a massive failure and just playing your 8 players would be grand.

Remy is also a good choice IMO.

I'd personally take Benteke over Lakuku. I get the feeling there's a reason why Lakuku hasn't started more games this season and that same reason may lead to him missing gametime and frustrating FPL managers. This is just a feeling though.

I didn't realise Lukaku had started 8 of the last 10, looking at appearances on the Premier League didn't make it look that obvious as he is subbed.

Doing a comparison with the stats, I still think Benteke edges it for me (although I think Lukaku is the better player).

Guaranteed mins and fixtures does it for me.

dont worry carlos its not like footballers are treated the same as the rest of us..remember Edmundo??

"In 1995, Edmundo would be involved in a car accident that would result in the death of three people. Edmundo would be found guilty of drink driving & manslaughter. He was given a sentence which meant he only had to spend nights in jail & free to play football during the day"

    or Kluivert??

In 1995, Kluivert was charged with manslaughter following his involvement in a fatal car accident in which Marten Putman, a theatre director, was killed. He was found guilty and received community service and a driving ban.[14]

-8 for this, yes or no:

Will you want Aguero back? If not, go for it.

I'd be tempted to leave the Guthrie transfer and keep 4 points and the extra cash that will allow more flexibility in future weeks

Snodgrass will likely be warming your bench in future weeks anyway so it has to pay off this week in order to be worth it. I also think there's a less than 50% chance that Snodgrass will get more than 4 points this week.

Mig and Onouha cancel somewhat for him, so I have a chance if Liverpool get smashed. So possibly Gerrard to Lennon could work out for me.

I know that it'll probably be a huge mistake but I'm captaining NZogbia this week. I need to make up 70pts in my work league, and we've all got 6-7 same players, this feels like the safest week for that wild punt captaincy. Will probably blow up in my face though!

Tinkerman, what about Norwich's fixtures though to have Snodgrass as a 5th midfielder?

SOUTHAMPTON sunderland wigan SWANSEA arsenal READING stoke VILLA WBA man city

Both Stoke and Arsenal would have normally been tough, but both their defences seem vunerable at the minute. Look at the other fixtures and Southampton, Wigan, Reading and Villa are all in the bottom few.

      Hi, JK

I just think Lukaku is the better player. Every time I watch him play he impresses me with his movement and finishing. He looks like Chelsea's future No.1 striker. I understand Benteke has better fixtures on paper but most of his returns have come away from home and he only has two away games in the next 5. Lukaku is up against some poor defences like Stoke, West Ham and Arsenal over the next few weeks and I think Swansea are not as solid as they were away from home anymore.

I still may get both though 😉

        (h) to West Ham and the 2 after look good but he is not guaranteed to start the games by the look of things. A blank followed by a possible but not nailed on start doesn't outweigh 2 games for JE.
