Welcome to the first of our weekly community round-up articles which will pick out some of the best activity and hot topics generated by the Fantasy Football Scout community over the previous seven days. We will also cover the community leagues and tournaments that are taking place throughout the season. Those running community tournaments are urged to email me ahead of the new season at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk for inclusion in forthcoming community round-up articles.

Hottest Topics

The launch of HomeCrowd last week introduced the concept of ‘hot topics’ and ‘stickies’, a new way for the community to locate some of most interesting posts and discussions taking place. The current list of hot topics can be found in the widget in the right sidebar, whilst stickies in any article can be found by simply using the “sticky comments first” setting in the “sort comments by” dropdown below each article.

In our first week, we’ve already seen a good number of hot topics from the community, covering a wide range of fantasy football issues.

Statistics have been the focus for many, with the community keen to turn to their abacuses and spreadsheets months before the new numbers come our way. Amongst the pick of our hot topics is 3rd Turd’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Stats Home and Away Analysis which is broken down to bonus points, goals, assists, points per game, FPL points and minutes. An incredible achievement and deserving of a hottest topic gong.

Some age-old discussions about Fantasy games have also been given an airing. Mathmo has popped down to his lab to attempt to decipher just how much the game is down to luck or skill. His analysis based on the performance of so called ghosts teams was particularly impressive.

The form versus fixtures debate is one Al Pacino and his calculator has been getting to grips with. Read his analysis based on some of the FPL game’s biggest players here.

Elsewhere this week RoysCallerAnne also started whetting our appetite for the forthcoming fixture list announcement with a look at rotation and whether it’s actually overrated.

The community has also been able to go the extra mile with their in depth analysis of new managers and players coming to the Premier League for 2013/14. Dino’s look at Manuel Pellegrini’s track record was an eye-poppingly detailed analysis of City’s new boss.

Over the week we’ve also been putting out our own daily hot topics, asking for your views on a range of topics including cult players as well as hearing about your greatest fantasy football achievements. We’ve really enjoyed reading your responses.

Community Leagues

Community group FFS UEFA haven’t been resting on their laurels during the close season and have spent the time devising an intriguing transfer window simulation game, which involves 128 community members who are organised along Premier League team names. After the first round Cardiff have the honour of acquiring the highest valued goalkeeper Iker Casillas. For those looking to join the game the sign up details can be found here.

HomeCrowd Updates

A number of our overseas community members requested we tweak the time updates on the site. We listened and we acted. From today, community members can now go into their profile section and under “comment settings” they can find a choice of timezone to select. You can also now choose to see the time of a comment’s posting rather than how long ago it was posted – another popular recent request.

Feel free to keep the feedback, suggestions and community news coming my way via email at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

I have been looking at the above mentioned 3rd Turds charts. Fantastic charts! Thank you 3rd Turds. I am trying to draw some conclusions about it and the one things I first notice is that.

    1. Most defenders have much more points per game at home than away (not so surprising, CS are more common at home)

    2. Many (I think most) attacking players have MORE points per game away than home. This was a bit surprising. Could this be because away teams usually concede and therefor must attack more?

My conclusion is therefore - Home/away-rotation for defenders is even more important than I thought. To play the forwards that play home is not at all important, it is even better to play those who are away from home :-O

I might go for a bit of keeper rotation this year, normally I play one keeper all the time with a cheapy on my bench.

It's irrelevant who they choose as U-21 coach unless England undertakes the same root-and-branch restructuring of their youth policy as Germany did in 2000.

Very few coaches, no quality coming through, no tactical awareness.

I totally agree. Additionally they need to get their priorities right. The Dutch manager was able to call up every eligible player to the tournament since it is taken very seriously here too.

I think Joe is taking a leaf from George Costanza in that Seinfeld episode where he just started turning up for work even though he hadn't been hired on the basis that by the time anyone figured out he wasn't meant to be there he'd have proved himself invaluable.

Carroll signing with West Ham makes him a very intersting fantasy prospect next season. His form towards the end of last season was pretty decent and he's obviously going to be a guaranteed starter whenever he is fit. Assuming his fantasy price gets adjusted downwards to reflect his shift from Liverpool he's definately going to be a tempting second/ third striker option. (It makes Nolan and Jarvis worth monitoring too).
