Michael Laudrup’s summer spending spree continued to pick up pace earlier this week with the acquisition of Jonjo Shelvey from Liverpool for a fee around £5m. The 21-year-old rolls up to the Liberty on a four-year contract and is the fifth player to be snapped up by the Swansea boss over the last few weeks, following the arrival of Jordi Amat, Jose Canas and Alejandro Pozuelo, in addition to Jonathan de Guzman’s return on a further season-long loan deal:

Speaking to the Swans official website upon completion of the deal, Shelvey admitted the club’s style of play, allied with the opportunity of increased game time, were fundamental to his decision to move to the Welsh outfit:

“Leaving a club like Liverpool is a very hard decision to make, but coming to Swansea, who play similar football which Brendan (Rodgers) and managers before him installed here, is an attraction. Brendan said he wouldn’t let me go to a club that wasn’t right for me. He said Swansea are perfect for me with the way I play. Rather than sit on the bench every week at Liverpool, I need to come and play football and get myself to the status that I once had. Moving here will help me in terms of the way the manager wants to play. Obviously having worked under Brendan that will stand me in good stead.”

The History

A product of the Arsenal and West Ham youth academies, Shelvey was picked up by Charlton as a youngster back in 2007. Having scored 14 times in 23 appearances for the Under 18s in 2007/08, he was promoted to the senior side the following year and, after becoming the club’s youngest ever first-team player, went on to produce seven goals and five assists from 42 games in the Championship.

Signed by Liverpool in May 2010, Shelvey managed just a single assist from 15 appearances in his debut campaign on Merseyside. Farmed out to Championship side Blackpool the following year, the midfielder made an immediate impact, producing six goals and three assists in just 10 matches before he was recalled to Merseyside as a result of injuries to the likes of Lucas and Steven Gerrard. Back at Anfield, he again failed to produce the goods – notching just once in 13 matches over the remainder of the season.

In Brendan Rodgers’ first term in charge, Shelvey made nine starts and 10 appearances off the bench but was unable to make any real impression, mustering a single strike in the league last time round. Ironically, he was far more prolific in the Europa League for the Reds last season, notching four times in nine matches. On the international stage, Shelvey has represented England at every level from Under 16 to Under 21, scoring 10 times in 29 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side once, climbing off the bench to feature against San Marino in October last year.

The Prospects

In the main, Shelvey’s move to Swansea has been greeted with a large degree of scepticism, though reports indicate Michael Laudrup was keen to push the move through.

Although Shelvey is versatile enough to play in a deeper, central position in addition to the role in “the hole”, there’s no doubt he has real competition to nail down a regular spot under Laudrup. The likes of Leon Britton, Ki Sung-Yeung, de Guzman and Canas could vie for the “double pivot” positions in Laudrup’s preferred 4-2-3-1, while Pozuelo, de Guzman, Pablo Hernandez and Wayne Routledge all offer alternatives to Michu as the most advanced midfielder behind a lone forward.

There’s an argument that Shelvey’s more physical approach may help his game time if the Swans boss is looking for a little extra steel in front of the back-four, though from a Fantasy perspective, such a scenario hardly boosts his appeal. Further up the field, he’s only likely to get a chance if Michu is either rested or pushed into a forward role, though with the Welsh club linked with moves for Bafetimbi Gomis or Wilfried Bony, the Spaniard may see less time up front next time round.

With Laudrup keen to strengthen his squad as Swansea prepare for the defence of the Capital One Cup and Europa League duties, rest and rotation could well blight the vast majority of their squad. While Shelvey seems optimistic that the move will boost his minutes, it’s difficult to see how he will go about cementing a regular role. Although he’s likely to come in as a mid-price midfield option across the Fantasy games, then, (around 5.5 to 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is anticipated) it may take injuries and suspension to others to boost his prospects as a regular for the season ahead. With United, Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal in the first six Gameweeks, even Michu may struggle to persuade early investors to jump on board – Fantasy managers will likely start the season steering well clear of Shelvey, only reassessing the situation if Laudrup decides he deserves more than just bench-warming duties.

Going on about our success in 1966 is a bit of a joke really. The year stands out because it's the only year that we won it and it was a long time ago. Hence the references about 1966 being a great year for England, and to the 47 years of hurt (and counting) since then.

And in the fairly unlikely but not impossible event of England winning the World Cup again, why shouldn't we get excited about it?

Mathmo's hot topic "Best time to Wildcard revealed" sampled when leading players used their wildcards.
      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/06/18/sleeper-charlie-adam/?hc_page=12&hc_refresh=469#hc_comment_4983441.

Later, Dino added some comments on this topic, which surprisingly did not get hulked, including the following statement:
"To summarize (probably over simplify) Mathmo's findings 95% of people in the top 1k played their wc’s in the first 5 gw’s last season. This dropped to 85% for between 1k and 2k and dropped again to no lower than 60% for between 8k and 100k."
      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/07/05/pre-season-section-now-live/?hc_page=3&hc_sort_by=comment_date#hc_comments

Commenting on this post, Demi pointed out that Cully had discovered that Mathmo's figures did not appear to be correct. According to Cully, only 50% of the top 1k played their wildcard early. My own comment on this was that last season's runner-up did not play his wildcard till GW24 (2 weeks after his January wildcard). And some of the other leading players saved their wildcards even longer, till the later DGWs. There are clearly many different ways to play this game successfully.

As it stands now, I don't have a single player from either ManU or ManC in my provisional FPL team and it makes me think there's something awfully wrong with it.
But on the other hand, I'd have to lose at least one of Walcott, Hazard, Bale and Coutinho, and Carroll and Benteke.
If it's van Persie, I may have to get rid of maybe three of this lot. If Aguero, well I don't know 100% he's nailed on. Kagawa, Silva, Yaya, Rooney - are they worth it and are they nailed on?

For now - no Manchester coverage for me AT ALL.

    Thoughts?

I think this is going to be a common dilemma. Going without Man U may be OK fixtures wise but Man City is another issue. Having said that RVP is fixture proof. Its going to split the community!!!!

I reckon van Persie may be worth as much as 14m.
This means you may forego the inclusion of some of those other big hitters like Hazard/Mata, Bale and Walcott. Looking at their FPL potential as well as from the fixture perspective, it won't appeal to me.

I reckon we could see a good season from Kagawa, and/or Hernandez, depending on the tactics and decisions from Moyes.

I'm a fan of Yaya, and he could benefit playing alongside Fernandinho. I'm keeping an eye on Silva. He should have the talent to perform, but seemed decidedly off form last season, so wait and see if that's a temporary dip or a permanent decline.

I can understand that. 2 new managers, a lot of new players. I want to see who plays and where before investing those sorts of money in players. I wouldn't consider it past, say, GW3 though. Your prime captain choices are likely to come from those clubs across the course of the season too. Especially with Chelsea lacking a bit in the striker department.

        Hello lads.

So managed to catch the end of the Murray match with a bit of bending the rules at work I managed to catch the final couple of games for Mr. Murray 😀

On another note, do we actually expect Shelvey to be a starter for Swansea? If so, where. Perhaps it depends on if they buy a striker (Bony/Rhodes)

        With a striker
        Ki, De Guzman
        Pablo Michu, Dyer
        Bony/Rhodes

        Without
        Ki, Shelvey
        Pablo, De Guzman, Dyer
        Michu

Or could Ki possibly play as a wideman, allowing Shelvey into the middle?

I can't see him as a regular starter, maybe rotated with Ki.
          He is a bit pants.

If they don't sign a striker i can see them using JDG in the whole.

          Something like this

          ---------Michu
          Pablo H. JDG Dyer
          -----Canas Britton

I don't think Ki will be a main starter.

        something that needs saying.
tennis, like in the olympics, sees the welsh, english, scottish and northern irish compete as great britain. andy murray represents great britain in the davis cup. like it or not he is the local player at wimbledon and other majors as no english welsh, northern irish (or other scottish) player ever makes it past the first round, they never make it onto our tv screen. i don't recall anyone having an issue with english or welsh people celebrating the success of chris hoy at the olympics.

tim henman was always referred to as the british number one, no one said anything back then about how that was over-generous for the scottish, welsh, or northern irish. british flags were waved back then, it, like anything in tennis or sport as a whole, was up tot he individual who they wanted to support, whilst you're naturally always going to feel more affinity to a brit as a brit, or more deeply a scot as a scot, or even more deeply a man from dunblaine as a person from dunblaine. saying the english have no right to support murray is almost as petty and ridiculous as saying the scottish have no right as murray's real development happened in spain, or more recently warm weather training camps in miami.

murray once said he supported which ever team played england in football, it's called banter, if it was genuine or sinister would he really have an english gf, an english best mate and live in england?

finally half the appeal of murray goes beyond flags, birthplaces etc. i can only speak for myself but it's factors like his struggle against the elite of tennis which until a year ago was always an ultimately fruitless struggle, even back then i used the analogy that he was andres iniesta, the 4th best player in the world in his sport, it's not exactly choking/big failure to not be better than messi and ronaldo in a 2-3 day spell. no one would make fun of iniesta.

more appeal is what the american's call the 'everyman' factor ( don't know of a british equivalent for the saying). murray could be your neighbour, he'd have a chat with you in a shop.

oh, and best of all, he plays FPL.
