The waiting is finally over. This afternoon, the doors swung open on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game for yet another season, allowing Fantasy managers the chance to finally assemble our new 15-man squads with just over a month until the 2013/14 campaign kicks off.

This time, there are no teasing tweets from the Premier League with two or three player prices every day for a week. Instead, we’re straight in at the deep end, with a brand new bonus point system to consider, an update on the assist definition and the use of statistics from our data partner, OPTA.

Intriguingly, the FPL have been completely transparent with the new bonus scoring system. Statistics such as recoveries, clearances, blocks and interceptions, crosses from open play, key passes, “big chances” created or missed and pass completion percentage are all amongst many critical indicators – you can click on The Scout tab to find out more.

The inclusion of OPTA data makes our members area all the more valuable to FPL managers this season and we intend to add extra tables, offering tailored tables of the relevant stats and a breakdown of the bonus allocation over the last two seasons in accordance with this term’s new rules. As with all our tables, members will be able to slice these by Gameweek range intervals for home and away matches and of course our player comparison tool will be mighty handy when it comes to selection when considering the factors at play behind the bonus points.

A quick glance at the assist ruling update is also eye-opening. The below statement indicates players will no longer be afforded an assist if their pass/cross into the penalty box is cleared by an opposing defender prior to a team mate scoring, for example – an award that has proven contentious in years gone by.

Significant Deflections
If an opposing player touches the ball after the final pass before a goal is scored, significantly altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is awarded.

We’ll digest the new features in full and roll out a series of articles – including Player List analysis – in due course but, for now, this is just a heads-up. Enjoy tinkering, folks.

    Bargain spotting:

Arsenal- The Arsenal defence. All priced at 5.5. Think Koscielny could be the way to go here.

Aston Villa - Helenius. Could be their Benteke replacement at 5.5. Has looked good in pre season.

Cardiff - Bellamy as a 5.5 mid stands out here. Should be nailed on when fit and on set pieces/penalties(at times).

Chelsea- Lukaku at 8m, Hazard at 9.5m look decent, the former depending on other transfer activity. Others to note are Azpi and Terry at 6m

Crystal Palace- Gayle at 5m if is pretty decent for a promoted striker that is 1st choice. Remains to be seen whether he will be though. Another is Williams the mid at 4.5m, who's pretty versatile too.

Everton- Coleman as a def at 5m. Yes please! Alcaraz at 4.5m too if Martinez goes with 3 at the back. Don't see any value anywhere else apart from Mirallas who's been changed to a mid at 7.5. Could be very good if he stays fit.

Fulham- Like the prices of Berbatov at 7.5 here. I thought he would be 8. Nailed on again and on penalties still. Stekelenberg at 5m is potentially great too if Fulham improve on last year's defence.

Hull- Brady is the choice here. 5m, very attacking, set pieces. Seems to be nailed on. Downside is he may play full back in a back 4 on the odd occasion, but at 5m, can't really go wrong i don't think.

Liverpool- Sturridge at 9m. Nailed on, atleast until Suarez's ban is over. Another is the Liverpool goalkeeper at 5.5m. May get an idea of who 1st choice is when the season starts.

Manchester City- Nastasic at 5.5 appeals to me here. Very promising defender, cheapest out of all their first choice players. Quite like Silva at 9m if he finds his 1st season form. 9.5 would put me off as he'd need to add more goals, but 9m is good, especially with the new bonus system which i feel will suit him.

Manchester United- De Gea at 6m. First choice, cheaper than last season, should improve on the cleansheets. Also expect Evra to be nailed on at 6.5m if we don't buy another LB. Kagawa/Valencia at 8/7.5 are very decent shouts too. Not to start with but they could become bargains with injuries and players sold. Won't be touching RvP at 14m. Effectively priced out of the game imo.

Newcastle- Like the look of YMBiwa at 4.5 if he nails down a spot. Ben Arfa at 7m too, with set pieces, being nailed on, no Europa League and possibly pens too.

Norwich- Turner as a 4.5m, 1st choice CB with goal threat. Out of the attack, only Snodgrass appeals and he's a reasonable shout at 6.5m

Southampton- The whole defence at 4.5 may be good value. Ramirez/Lallana at 6m the only other notable players for me.

    Stoke- Nothing.

Sunderland- Again, struggling to find anyone noteworthy here. I suppose whoever nails down the GK spot could be good at 4.5m.

Swansea- Hernandez at 6m and Bony at 8m. Latter is a tad expensive so a wait and see but will justify the price tag overall. Wait and see after their tough opening fixtures.

Tottenham- Kaboul at 5m looks good if he as expected becomes 1st choice with Vertonghen in the middle. Walker at 6m also tempting.

West Brom- Foster at 5m, Morrison at 6m and Anelka at 5.5m. Remains to be seen how nailed on the latter player will be though.

West Ham- Carroll at 7.5m if he stays fit could be the 3rd striker of choice this season. Nolan at 7m seems abit steep to me, but could be good value if him and Carroll get lots of starts together. Can't see another player that appeals.

    Hope this helps.

Yep. Adam could do ok this year, Hughes has stated he wants to get his blackpool form back.

He also missed pre-season last year and we all know fitness is his main problem so hopefully that will help.

Walters is never a bad shout as a potential OOP either (didn't finish that way last year but a new manager - keep an eye out for friendly formations)

Assuming Cameron nails down right back I think any of 'our' defence is solid at 5 million.

Adam's dad died last season I think and he was pretty young. But you could see when he got going that he was quite consistent with assists and goals for the run in and Hughes basically loves him and will put him on everything, build the attack round him etc.

Arsenal- Wilshere could be a great option if he plays in the hole again like last year.
Cardiff- Cornelius has a decent record in Denmark. 5.5m striker.
Fulham- Amorebieta at 4.5m looks good.
      Liverpool- Kolo Toure at 5m
Man Utd- Rooney at 10.5m is great value
Stoke- 5m for Stoke defenders isn't bad.
      Spurs- Dempsey at 7.5m
West Brom- Craig Dawson at 4m.

It's already annoying me that I can see several 'bargain' big team defenders but I don't really want to spend much at the back and they skew my team too much 😕

Just having a look at prices, and I've spotted a few players who've probably been priced fairly - but could really come into our reckoning if they're transfered or nail down a starting berth .

Nicklas Helenius - 5.5 striker - If Benteke leaves, this guy will be straight into my team when Villas fixtures soften.. looks like a great little player and we'll have a few games to suss him out before hand.

Andreas Cornelius - 5.5 striker - will start for Cardiff. Much the same as Helenius, the fixtures are tough from the start so we get a look t him before considering.

Antonio Alcaraz - 4.5 defender - if he nails down a starting place, 4.5 is a decent price for an Everton defender, especially if they can maintain the defensive form from the end of last season

    Bonus Points

A new Bonus Points System (BPS) has been created which utilises a range of statistics to create a BPS score for every player. The three best performing players in each match will be awarded bonus points. 3 points will be awarded to the highest scoring player, 2 to the second best and 1 to the third.

Examples of how bonus point ties will be resolved are as follows:

If there is a tie for first place, Players 1 & 2 will receive 3 points each and Player 3 will receive 1 point.
If there is a tie for second place, Player 1 will receive 3 points and Players 2 and 3 will receive 2 points each.
If there is a tie for third place, Player 1 will receive 3 points, Player 2 will receive 2 points and Players 3 & 4 will receive 1 point each.
How is the BPS score calculated?

Players score BPS points based on the following statistics (one point for each unless otherwise stated):

    Playing in a game
    Playing over 60 minutes
    Scoring goals
    Goalkeepers and defenders (4 points)
    Midfielders (6 points)
    Fowards (8 points)
    Assists (3 points)
Goalkeepers and defenders keeping a clean sheet (4 points)
    Saving a penalty (5 points)
    For every 3 saves
For every 3 open play crosses
Creating a big chance (a chance where the receiving player should score)
For every 8 clearances, blocks and interceptions (total)
    For every 8 recoveries
    Providing key passes
    Making 3 tackles
Scoring the goal that wins a match
Pass Completion (after making at least 30 passes)
    70% completion (1 point)
    80% completion (2 points)
    90% completion (3 points)
Players lose BPS points based on the following statistics (one point for each unless otherwise stated):

    Conceding a penalty
    Missing a penalty (-2 points)
For every 2 goals conceded by goalkeepers and defenders
    Yellow cards
    Red cards (-3 points)
    Own goals (-2 points)
    Missing a big chance
Making an error which leads to a goal
Every 2 errors leading to an attempt at goal
    Being tackled 3 times
    Conceding 2 fouls
    Being caught offside 3 times
Missing the target with 3 shots
Data is supplied by Opta and once it has been marked as final will not be changed. We will not enter into discussion around any of the statistics used to calculate this score for any individual match.

    Thoughts?

      and OPTA's ASSIST(according to FPL):

Assists are awarded to the player from the goal scoring team, who makes the final pass before a goal is scored. An assist is awarded whether the pass was intentional (that it actually creates the chance) or unintentional (that the player had to dribble the ball or an inadvertent touch or shot created the chance).

If an opposing player touches the ball after the final pass before a goal is scored, significantly altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is awarded.

      Rebounds
If a shot on goal is blocked by an opposition player, is saved by a goalkeeper or hits the woodwork, and a goal is scored from the rebound, then an assist is awarded.

      Own Goals
If a player shoots or passes the ball and forces an opposing player to put the ball in his own net, then an assist is awarded.

      Penalties and Free-Kicks
In the event of a penalty or free-kick, the player earning the penalty or free-kick is awarded an assist if a goal is directly scored, but not if he takes it himself, in which case no assist is given.

They've almost taken shots on and off target from the equation, and it's hard for defenders to get decent points, so I think the forwards will hoover up the bonus even more.

My understanding is that players get bonus allocations for doing well at their job. Defenders have a range of pts for defensive duties. Forwards rely on goals more.

The thinking is that it's a forward's job to score the goals. Just to be clear, those points are Bonus points, they are points that form a total that earns players bonus.

I think that they've posted the criteria for what counts towards bps and how much each statistic is worth is going to make the game better in terms of finding players that are suited to certain statistics.

E.g. tackles/clearances/interceptions/pass completion. All these things, now that they're out in the open, will mean more thought put into picking the best defenders/mids surely? I think it's a slight change from last year and it makes the game more thought based

Those stats will be heavily weighted towards goal scorers. So prolific strikers and also dominant midfielders will be the main beneficiaries of baps this year. Defenders and keepers havent got a hope in hell.

Took a look at the points differences between the new bonus system and the old PPI system in last year's data. Just looked at the points spread of the top 10 GK/DEF/MID/FWDs in both systems.

Firstly, the new bonus system gives out lower scores by a factor of at least two. This doesn't intrinsically matter as I understand the top three get bonus so it's all relative.

The old PPI system had higher scores for the best midfielders (709-533) and forwards (827-414) than defenders (622-440) and above all goalies (502-360). Indeed, the top four defenders were all big goalscorers (Baines, Evra, Vertonghen, Ivanovic) with only the fifth place defender (Mertesacker, 462) perhaps getting there without an exceptional attacking haul. Pretty suggestive that PPI rewarded goalscorers, which we all know.

The new bonus system has similar points for forwards (295-160), midfielders (279-195) and defenders (286-206) with only keepers losing out (195-142), though they do get save points which the other positions don't. Of interest are the rises experienced by midfielders with modest goal tallies. Schneiderlin comes in at 4th having not been anywhere near the top and Arteta is promoted from 9th to 5th. Prolific goalscorers Bale, Hazard and Fellaini all drop about 5 places too.

Looking at defenders, the new top 10 defenders are less dominated by goalscorers with Baines, Evra and Ivanovic dropping to 5th, 7th and 9th, while the less prolific likes of Williams, Agger, Jagielka, Hangeland and Johnson enter the top 10. The fact 4 of those 5 are centerbacks may hint at greater appreciation for their skillset and hence make them more attractive to own.

All in all there have of course been many rule changes and it's not possible to pin the changes on one factor, but it does look like A) goalscoring bonus has been reined in a bit, particularly for defenders, so we might see BAPS providing a complement to the scoring system as opposed to a copy of it, and B) bonus is now similar between all outfield positions.

One last thing, these are of course the bonus scores, not the BAPS themselves. I'd be interested to see a BAPs (new bonus system) column in FPL showing what the BAPS last year would have been under the new system, but I didn't see one when I skimmed through earlier.

I thought I'd give you guys a little run down on how I see Fulham players in FPL. These could be affected if Shad Khan decides spends a bit of money.

    GK + DEF
5.0 across the board apart from Amorebieta would suggest he might be a decent pick. To be honest I'd still avoid him, 15mins into his first ever game last night he left some Costa Rican with a black eye and a bloody face, he's the ultimate card magnet it would appear. Given the prices of other defenders in FPL there isn't great value here.

    MID
Kacaniklic at £5.0 is the standout for me. He was rotated a lot last season but showed his potential. I'd expect him to be a regular starter for us next season now that Duff is showing his age slightly. Kasami at 4.5 would be a risk but perhaps one for later in the season. Was impressive last night but he plays 'in the hole' where Ruiz plays so it would require an injury for him to become a viable option.

    ATT
Berbatov is £7.5 which is cheaper than I thought he'd be. 100% nailed on, with penalties in the bag and he's capable of explosive scores and the focal point of our attack. I think we'll see him in quite a few teams. Then there's Ruiz at £6.0. I was really hoping he would be a midfielder this year because he plays the same sort of role as Michu does for Swansea and could have been a great option. At his price and classification as it is I don't really see him being a great option given that the likes of Kone, RVW and Aspas are just 1.0 more.

I went through all of Berbatov's games last year on ESPN, and found some semi-interesting stats. Might not be 100% as it was lazy research but if I'm right then...

When Berbatov started up front - 20 games, 13 goals, 2 assists

When he started behind the main striker (Rodallega/Petric) - 12 games, 2 goals, 1 assist

At 7.5 he's mighty tempting...anyone want to have a crack at Fulham's likely front 6?

BARGAIN PLAYERS: Most bargains can be found from Arsenal and Fulham.

    - At 5.5 Szcesney is a bargain. Arsenal had the 3rd best defensive record last season - consistently getting home (and away) clean sheets against most clubs outside the top 6.

    -Same goes for Koscielny.

-Wilshere is just 6.5!!!! He should be able to play so that should be a great option.

    - Stekelenburg is just 5.0 - a great keeper at a club that is improving its defense further.

-Amorbieta is an excellent defender - 4.5 is sooooooooooo cheap and underpriced!

-Berbatov at 7.5 is an absolute steal.

Hello, good news travels fast, FPL is back LIVE again and I am also back.

Been a relatively long summer so far, been out of the loop FPL wise so will have to research alot of the older articles especially on the promoted teams. The roundup of best articles is a nice touch and very useful. Homecrowd is a change, hopefully for the best although the real test will be how it works on matchdays.

Spent the afternoon playing around with my kit and now going to get down to the nitty gritty and drafting my first team 😀

Need to sign back up as a member, anything good on there at the moment? I know it's pre-season so no real stats, anything to entice me to sign up right this moment?

Anyway the fun begins again, tinkering and lots of it. I know this post will probably be ignored now with the 100's of RMT posts but I thought I would post anyhow.

Some really good value in the promoted teams:

    At Palace:

Parr (4m) - seems to be nailed on at left back. I don't fancy many clean sheets, but reckon he'll rack up a fair few assists.

Williams (4.5m) - may replace Zaha on the wing, good bet for a substitute midfielder.

Gayle (5m) - only had just over half a season at the Posh last year, but could be the surprise package of the promoted teams. Holloway's teams get goals, and he'll get ample supply from their midfield. Could be a real bargain.

    At Cardiff:

Marshall (4.5m) and Hudson (4.5m) - Cardiff's defence is well set up for the Premier League, they've a strong, well organised unit.

Bellamy (5.5m) - and classified as a midfielder. Most of their attacks go through him (or Kim).

    At Hull:

Brady (5m) - plays more as a wing-back, but gets forward loads and is their major outlet. Another good fifth midfielder option, I reckon.

Will be hard to judge CS potential until they've played a few games but Hull and Palace rotation for 8m looks very good

TOT, NOR, SUN, CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL, ARS, SUN, EVE, CPL, LIV/nor, WHM, CAR, STO, NEW, MUN/avl, FUL, NOR takes it up to GW20

GWs 1, 9, 13 and 18 are the only ones that look problematic and the latter two of those offer decent away games.

Turner/Clyne and HUL/CPL rotation, plus Kolo for every game if Liverpool don't sign a CB.

Yes the fixtures are good, but you're forgetting those teams will likely be 19th and 20th. It's like rotating QPR and Reading last year.

West Ham and Swansea have both been promoted and produced the defensive goods over the lasat two seasons. I don't really expect either Hull or Palace to do the same but funds are tight.

Noticing a lot of interest in Aspas on here.
    Why?
1 top flight season to his name at 25.
Not yet sure if he starts.
    Not yet proven in prem.

    Seriously?

Liverpool big question mark at the moment... you have to assume Suarez OUT and another attacker IN

Front six IMO: Lucas, Gerrard, Coutinho, [New], Aspas / Sterling, Sturridge

Might even be two new attackers if they were looking at an attacker regardless of Suarez leaving

      Ah, unlucky.

I went for the frankly brilliant 181.

Not only is it a primary number which reads the same back to front, it also has vertical, horizontal and rotational angles of symmetry.

I fail to see how I could have done better.

Has anyone noticed that in the FPL transfers page you can switch between EA PPI and the new BAPS system to see who was the best last year and this year. Shows who is likely to benefit under the new system.

Good spot - some kind of correlation analysis should be pretty easy there.

Wonder if forwards will benefit due to reduced penalty for shots off target.
