Our pre-season projections and Rate My Team tool are almost ready to go live in the Members Area. Over the past week we’ve seen a number of significant signings, notably at the Etihad, that have delayed our first set of numbers but, with the market seemingly settled for 24-hours, we’re now very close to going live with both, albeit with perhaps a big Gareth Bale caveat on the way.

Once again this season, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by “Professor†Chris Atkinson, who some of you may have got to know via last season’s ScoutCast.

The Rate My Team model is built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attack and defence rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

In the next day or so we will be publishing full projections for every Premier League player, plotting their total points, goals, assists etc for the entire season. These will include short-term projections offering a view of the opening six Gameweeks.

The projection tables will be fully sortable and you can assess FPL points per million value to help you run the rule over those crucial budget purchases.

In addition to the Projections, the full Rate My Team tool will also be going live shortly.

This can be used in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. It includes a players table that can filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Rate My Team can also be used to build a team from scratch, analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains your bench and bench order and allow you to model your future transfers.

The “Professor†and I will be creating some new movies explaining how the Projections and Rate My Team work in the next few days. Look out for them over the weekend and into next week.

A reminder that memberships for the coming season, giving you access to both the projections and Rate My Team tool, along with many other features, are available for the pre-season price of £12.50. Click here for further details, including an array of preview movies to demonstrate what’s on offer.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Cromulenti started an interesting discussion earlier about how to judge player value. The argument was that pts/£m is a flawed concept because we have to spend a minimum amount on each player (4m DEF; 4.5m MID etc). Therefore the discretionary spend is price minus minimum spend - that number is surely a better way to judge price. I agree with this approach wholeheartedly.

However, what was missed in this very interesting post, was a similar concept relating to points scored. In baseball (shudder) there is a concept known as VORP - Value Over Replacement Player - designed as a means to judge the contribution a player makes to a team relative to a replacement squad player. In FPL a 'replacement player' might be a notional nailed on 4m DEF, and one could calculate from historical data what such a player might be expected to contribute in fantasy points. That notional replacement value would then become the baseline for calculating points scored. Then value would be (pts minus replacement points)/(price minus minimum spend).

Obviously it would take some serious work to calculate the baseline points for each position, but this would result in a much more thorough analysis of value.

    Thoughts?

Hey HRB interesting stuff and echoing something I posted a while back http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/06/24/sleeper-david-silva/?hc_page=3&hc_refresh=475#hc_comment_4997855

In the comments section you can see a link to something Chris Glover did before so my idea was not a new concept by any means. The comments are interesting and I do like your extra take on the points base value too.

If someone wants a hulk post this would not be a bad topic to do some work on imo, could be very useful.

This makes complete sense and is what I was thinking of trying to do this year. I think you need to pick a replacement player for each position who you think represents good value (e.g. nailed on, decent point projection, cheap), and then use that player as a baseline to evaluate everyone else.

Crystal Palace are my local team but I'm pretty sure they'll go down.
I have to agree with Stoke. Honestly can't see Mark Hughes making them much better either.
Call me controversial but I think Newcastle need to be careful. If they get a few injuries they might be in trouble. They're quite the yo-yo team anyway. Provided no injuries, I'd say Hull.

Newcastle haven't strengthened their side at all. It's a bare bones squad as I like to call it. Any major injuries which can always happen, strips it down to it's bare bones and it's not pretty. (As we saw last year)

Speaking of which, why haven't Newcastle signed anybody

Yeah, I was sure to include Sturridge in the squad, but then again I wanted both RvP & Bale so I had to cut him. A bit disappointed he's at 9.0, a little too expensive imo. Defence is pretty much set and there's not much money to pinch out there. If I was to cut Bale I could get Silva instead, upgrade Kone to Sturridge and Snodgrass to Mirallas. Not sure though if I should..

I also looked at Baines but I think he costs too much, Agger/Mertesacker can easily get as many points under the new rules. Sessegnon played today but I think he was in the shop window - doubt he will play every week if he stays. Coleman is also up for debate with regards to clean sheets. Lukaku has also a question mark hanging over him regards playing time.

Since they triggered a term in his contract that allows them to negotiate personal terms with Suarez.

Not what they are saying on Sky.
They are saying that Suarez must be made aware of offers over 40 million.
The owner of Liverpool has also laughed at the offer.
So unless you know more than Sky Sports and the owner of the club .....??

I don't know more than anyone on this. News sites have already said that Suarez has requested his right to negotiate terms with Arsenal FC.

    FELLAINI???

According to the betting on betfair he will leave Everton.
Only one place he will be going right? OT.
Would he be a good purchase? Surely would get a chance "in the hole"behind RVP
Rooney to Chelsea - Baines and Fellaini to Man Utd me thinks

He could go to Napoli also, even though I've read nothing about it. Napoli can afford him though.

The team looks decent, however I'm not too sure about Paulinho, undoubtably a good player and gives some spurs coverage, but I'm not too sure how advanced his role in the spurs midfield may be and he is also doubling up with Bale. Maybe replace him with a 7m differential like giacherini or nolan? Just my opinion I guess. Besides that I can't see too much wrong with the lineup, 6/10 for me.
