The Premier League have this afternoon confirmed both Chelsea and Aston Villa will now start the season with a double Gameweek 1. With the Blues set to face Bayern Munich in the Uefa Super Cup Final on Friday August 30, their home game against Villa, which was initially scheduled for Saturday August 30, has now been shifted to Wednesday August 21.

This news is set to bring the Blues assets firmly onto our Fantasy radars, bearing in mind Jose Mourinho’s side also entertain Hull City on the opening weekend of the new season. Huge investment is now expected to come Chelsea’s way, though Fantasy managers will be mulling over a couple of recent Mourinho comments as they assess just who to splash their budgets on.

The Blues boss admitted Spain’s match in Ecuador, which takes place on August 14, may be a factor in his line-up for the Tigers fixture – something to consider when assessing the likes of Juan Mata, Cesar Azpilicueta and Fernando Torres for our starting XI:

“The players who go for their national teams two days before the opening of the Premier League, it depends a lot on that. Some have to go to Ecuador and come back and arrive in London on Saturday without having slept after a 15-hour flight to train on Saturday morning. If a player plays for England on Wednesday against Scotland, plays for 45 minutes at Wembley and then an hour after the game he is at home in Cobham sleeping, he is in a better condition to play. The team will be decided game after game and week after week. I will have to think about two or three matches at the same time.”

Only yesterday, Mourinho also revealed he will be a little more cautious with Frank Lampard’s game time this term. As mentioned in this morning’s Friendlies Round Up, the veteran midfielder is unlikely to one of the “untouchables” this time around as his manager looks to rest him more often.

The comments perhaps strengthen Eden Hazard’s prospects as the Belgian looks to replicate his start to the previous season, which produced double figures in both his double Gameweek 1 appearances. While loading up on Chelsea looks a viable tactic, a trip to United in Gameweek 2, followed by a blank fixture the following week, also has to be factored into the equation.

For Villa, though, the appeal of a double is significantly lessened, bearing in mind they travel to Arsenal prior to the Stamford Bridge showdown – those eyeing up Christian Benteke, for example, may be a little cautious given the fixtures, though the uncertainty surrounding the Chelsea forwards certainly indicates the Belgian looks the most nailed-on of any double Gameweek frontline option.

We’ll have more on the two sides in upcoming Scouting the Doubles articles – for now, though, this is just a heads-up.

Actually it looks like Mourinho said no-one is leaving due to interest in Ivan and he does see him as a right back ('also comfortable at CB'). It would appear he is the correct answer.

It which case; BS, I say Mata plays but it will prob be Torres just so he can have another pop at me.

Yep every top club id say makes mistakes, what's helped Utd and Arseanl over the last 15 years is having only the 1 manager. This elimanates all the rotation so many clubs suffer when a new man comes in. Buys and Sells etc etc. More often than not the clubs that rotate there manager lose out.

I do recall Benitez was 5 million short from buying DAni Alvaz 5 years ago and Instead he was forced to buy Pennant.

Before we start thinking who the best players for the double GW are, I think we need to consider how many are worth getting. With Aston Villa and Chelsea both having a game gap and neither having particularly good fixtures immediately after we could find ourselves in a bit of a hit rut. Chelsea travelling to Man U and Villa just generally facing constant strong opposition for the near future it could be more costly than it's worth.
In addition, Villa have the more nailed on players, Chelsea have 2 week teams but rotation is a big doubt, especially as we don't really know who Mourinho likes, J. Terry and Lamps were strongholds for him but nostalgia will not play a part in the mind of such a professional. On top of this as mentioned in the pages article there are then the internationals to consider, so picking even 1 player could be risky.
In conclusion, 2 players tops might be about right, and both of those being from Chelsea.

Yes, a game very close to PL start. Mourinho's quote is up top. Not sure of Pellegrino's approach but it would suggest JM is resting Mata & Torres at least

Petr Cech anyone? Seems like a good option as he's bound to play right? Azpilicueta could miss at least one game and it gives me the option to then get mignolet and upgrade defence after gw1. Seem logical?

Absolutely must be...I don't know why anybody is looking at defenders...He is nailed on for both games and removes all the pressure from ditching players for blank GW3 in order to have a full Xl....or be it you will end up with an expensive goalie for a while...I'm going with him and Boruc...

    So, the Chelsea defender conundrum:

Mertersacker is home to Villa, as are Chelsea defenders, roughly cancelling out. Assuming that you're going to have to take a hit to get the Chelsea defender out, the choice between the two boils down to the following:

+ Home game against Hull could net 6 pts plus any attacking returns
    - You're already 4 pts down from the inevitable hit
    - No one's really sure who's going to play
+ You can transfer out to anyone, giving you an extra bit of flexibility
    - Chelsea defenders cost more

TBH, it seems pretty balanced to me. The upside return isn't huge (net 2 pts, but with a lot more if they get attacking points), but the downside risk is also small (net -2 pts if they conceed, -4 pts if they only play one). I think it really comes down to personal choice.

I don't see why any hits would be necessary. 3 Chelsea players, 2 FTs before the blank. Transfer 2 out, bench one GW3.

Hmm I think if you plan your team well enough there really won't be a need for any hits. Having a Chelsea defender for a HUL/AVL DGW is too good an opportunity to miss imo.

    Reply fail

I'm not an Arsenal fan, but I think for now it's best to reserve that 1.5. I have Giroud in my squad without Theo. Just spreading my funds around to get some good coverage for the start of the season. New managers and new players...it's crazy! I gave myself 2.5 in the bank to work with down the road.

Don't even know if I want to invest in 3 Chelsea players. I could probably go without Lukaku. I just don't want to be stuck with Chelsea players for the blank. Then again, I could always wildcard early.

I was planning on shipping out Luiz/Ivanovic first and then changing Lukaku to a 9.5 striker.

I'm continuing to leave 2.5 in the bank to stay flexible. Thoughts?
