Tottenham’s new striker Roberto Soldado and the Fantasy Premier League game’s new Bonus Points System were among the key issues vexing the community over the past seven days. We take our weekly look back at the big discussions that have recently slipped off the Hot Topics widget, as well as catch up with the latest developments in our community leagues.

Hottest Topics

Transfer dealings have caught the eye of the community this week, with Mathmo running the rule over Tottenham’s latest recruit Soldado. Mathmo predicts he may take a little while to adapt to the English Premier League but once he does the goals are set to flow. Be warned though, it seems that Soldado is unlikely to rack up many assists.

Soldado and Wayne Rooney were the latest subjects of our resident video expert Brutus619, who has been analysing their performances to assess their key strengths. Turns out both could be set for ‘surprise package’ status this season.

The 3rd Turd has been at his abacus again to look closely at the FPL’s new bonus system and create one of our most popular ever comment posts. His analysis based on 2011/12 data gives a game by game breakdown of how the new bonus allocation would have affected players’ points during that season. Turns out that goalkeepers could be the surprise beneficiaries of the changes. Make a cuppa before sitting down and soaking this one up.

Fifth midfield options provided the inspiration for Kings of Lyon’s post, which sparked an interesting discussion about the best budget options in midfield.  Could Everton’s Ross Barkley be a surprise selection in teams? Athletico Timbo certainly thinks he’s worth considering. For Evs, Cardiff’s Kim could be a shrewd purchase at just 5m in the FPL game.  According to our resident Wales expert the word on the streets of Cardiff is that not only is Kim nailed on, but a role in “the hole” behind a lone forward beckons.

Ever wondered how the Premier League’s newest recruits would have fared under an FPL scoring model in their previous leagues? The Puntmaster was on hand to delve into the stats and create these remarkable tables of their progress if FPL points had been applied to leagues such as The Championship and La Liga.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) reached the second round of bidding for strikers last week. The best player in the round, Robert Lewandowski, moved to BonZ’s Cardiff, while the leaders of the game are now Norwich, under The Shadow’s guidance. This week, clubs will be looking to trade players amongst themselves.

Meanwhile FFS UEFA’s leagues return for their third installment, and along with it the live score site, press releases, matchday reviews and a lot more. If you want to represent a European club of your choice, be sure to check out the details and register here before the deadline of August 9.

guys is it unwise to take a punt on Zaha? I mean if Valencia and Young and Nani are not really performing then it could be a simple choice right? Of the list so far Valencia is a shadow of himself and young feels too injury prone...

As a Celtic fan I appreciate how poor our domestic league is but to see teams like Anderlecht, Copenhagen, Olympiacos seeded and straight into the group stage yet we reach the last 16 and have to go through a 2nd and 3rd qualifying phase then a playoff.

A successful campaign in the previous season should be rewarded.

      100%. Its a disgraceful system.

In the 2011-12 year, Man City entered the groups having not won any league in 40 odd years.
Dortmund were German champions and former CL winners.
Man City were 3rd seeds, Dortmund 4th.

Surely winning the German league should automatically make you a top seed? Bring back Champions only European Cup.

4th is not worthy of reward.

The system is fine. Teams without form get lower rankings. Teams from poorer leagues get fewer byes. It avoids too many easy games in the later stages.

I think Villa will score and you're following that up with a game vs United and a blank fixture.
So basically you're looking at one cleansheet.. and a transfer on a defender.
          Not for me.

Yeah there's a good chance of two CS..
But the more logically I think about it, it's quite often that you see a side you'd not expect to score take the lead against a bigger club.
I think Benteke will probably be dangerous, and Villa have strenghtened.
I just don't fancy a Chelsea defeder this DGW because of the blank and MUN

Maybe a bit careful with Bony for the first match, as he is called up by Ivory Coast to play at the Metlife Stadium in New Jersey on 14/8. Sort of same scenario as the Spanish players

    FC Midjylland 0-1 Sunderland FT

AJ goal, Altidore assist. (Lovely goal it was too)

FPL wise we found that the back 4 won't settle until we have finished signing some fullbacks which we almost certainly will be doing in the next couple of weeks.

AJ, Sess and Giacherini all started and all played well. They all come in at 7M on FPL and tbh it might be a bit of a lottery regarding who gets more points. I doubt there will be a point hog among them, more likely assists and the odd goal will be spread among them.

Colback was sent off for 2 yellows but I assume it won't carry over to the real season.

so it seems like the sunderland midfield trio work too well together, so no one will get the vast majority of points. shame that. Who was in the hole or did they rotate?

Sess played in the hole with the other 2 on the wings. I think it may turn out that way, AJ and Sess were very close in points last season, so I'm expecting similar with the addition of Giach
